Quick answer

To sell digital products on Etsy, open a shop, choose Digital files when you create a listing, attach up to five files of 20MB each, and price for a fee stack of $0.20 per listing, 6.5% per sale and payment processing (3% + $0.25 in the US). The item must be your own design, AI use must be disclosed in the description, and every file should be tested as a buyer before the listing goes live.

To sell digital products on Etsy, you create a listing, choose Digital files as the item type, attach up to five files (20MB each) that buyers download instantly after paying, and price the item so it still makes sense after Etsy's listing, transaction and payment processing fees. The product must be something you designed yourself, and if AI helped make it, the listing description has to say so.

Fees and rules checked October 2026 against Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy, the payment processing fee table, How to Manage Your Digital Listings and the Creativity Standards. Etsy changes fees by notice; if a number here differs from your Shop Manager, the Shop Manager wins.

This guide is the operator's version: what Etsy actually accepts as a digital item, every fee that touches a $5 to $30 download, how delivery works on both sides, and the delivery QA checklist we run before any listing goes public. If you are choosing between Etsy and other platforms, start with our hub on where to sell digital products; if you already know you want printables on Etsy, the printables business guide goes deeper on that one category.

Who selling on Etsy suits (and who it does not)

Etsy is a marketplace with its own buyer search. That is the reason to be there: people type "wedding seating chart template" or "budget planner printable" into Etsy with a card in hand, and a new shop can be found without an audience. The trade-off is that you rent the customer. Etsy owns the buyer relationship, sets the fees and decides the ranking.

  • Good fit: printables, planners, invitations, templates for Canva or spreadsheets, clip art, patterns, wall art files, and other products people already search for by name.
  • Weaker fit: courses, memberships, software and anything that needs explanation before purchase. Those sell better from your own page on a platform like Gumroad; see our Gumroad guide.
  • Not allowed: items you did not create. That rules out resold PLR packs as-is, which our PLR guide covers in detail.

How to sell digital products on Etsy: the system end to end

Every working digital shop runs the same loop. The research and the QA steps are the ones new sellers skip, and they are the ones that decide whether listings sell and whether buyers leave good reviews.

The Etsy digital product loop
  1. 01
    Research demand

Search Etsy for the product as a buyer would and read what already sells.

  2. 02
    Make the file

Your own design, exported in formats buyers can open.

  3. 03
    List it

Digital files type, mockup images, clear title and description, AI disclosure if used.

  4. 04
    QA the delivery

Buy-test the download path before you promote anything.

  5. 05
    Price after fees

Check net per sale with and without Offsite Ads.

  6. 06
    Review and repeat

Expand the formats that sell into bundles and variations.

Can you sell digital products on Etsy, and which ones qualify?

Yes, and Etsy is explicit about which ones. Its Creativity Standards put digital downloads under "designed by a seller": original content you created, sold as a file, such as a graphic design, audio, a text document or a scanned copy of your own artwork. Etsy's help page on digital listings repeats the rule: digital items must be made or designed by you.

AI is allowed with conditions. Seller-prompted AI creations, meaning images generated from your own prompts, qualify, but you must disclose in the listing description that the item was created with AI. AI prompt bundles are named as not qualifying, and so is a PDF of a book you did not create. Checked October 2026.

Does not qualify
  • PLR or resell-rights packs listed unchanged
  • A PDF of a book you did not write or design
  • AI prompt bundles
  • Files downloaded from free stock sites and repackaged
  • AI art listed without a disclosure in the description
Qualifies as designed by a seller
  • Planners, trackers and printables you designed
  • Canva, Notion or spreadsheet templates you built
  • Your own illustrations, clip art or scanned artwork
  • Seller-prompted AI art, disclosed in the description
  • Original audio, patterns or text documents

A practical AI disclosure line reads like this: "The illustrations in this pack were generated with AI from my own prompts, then edited, colour-matched and laid out by me." Put it in the first lines of the description, not hidden at the bottom. If you build products with AI tools, our AI digital products guide covers which workflows hold up under marketplace rules.

How do Etsy digital downloads work?

Etsy has two kinds of digital listing, per its digital listings help page:

  • Instant downloads. You attach the files when you create the listing. The buyer can access them immediately after paying. Etsy will not let you publish or save an instant listing without a file attached.
  • Made-to-order downloads. Custom files, such as a personalised invitation. You set When did you make it? to Made To Order, and when the file is ready you go to Orders, choose Complete order, upload up to five files and confirm. Etsy emails the buyer that the download is available.

On the seller side, the limits that matter are five files per listing, 20MB per file, file names of up to 70 characters (letters, numbers, periods, underscores, hyphens) and no renaming after upload: the name you upload is the name the buyer sees. Supported types include PDF, ZIP, PNG, JPG, GIF, DOC, RTF, TXT, MP3, MOV, EPUB and STL. You cannot offer variations on digital items, so different sizes or colourways go inside one file set or in separate listings. Checked October 2026.

On the buyer side, the files sit on the buyer's Downloads page along with a note you can set once for all digital listings. Use that note: tell buyers which file to open first, what program they need and how to reach you. Etsy also says that cancelling an order is the only way to revoke a buyer's access to a file once it has been purchased.

Etsy fees for digital products (checked October 2026)

Digital items have no shipping, so the fee stack is shorter than for physical goods, but the fixed parts weigh heavily on cheap downloads. These are the fees from Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and the processing fee table:

FeeWhat Etsy chargesNotes
Listing fee$0.20 per listing, renewed every 4 months (auto-renew on by default)Charged whether or not it sells
Transaction fee6.5% of the item price (plus shipping and gift wrap, which digital items rarely have)US sellers: not charged on sales tax
Payment processing (US)3% + $0.25 per order through Etsy PaymentsOther countries differ, e.g. UK 4% + £0.20
Offsite Ads15% on attributed orders, 12% once a shop passes $10,000 in yearly sales; capped at $100 per orderOpt-out allowed only under $10,000
Set-up feeOne-time, varies by location, sometimes waivedShown during shop set-up
Etsy AdsYour own daily budgetOptional
Etsy Plus$10 per monthOptional subscription

A worked example with illustrative inputs: a US seller lists a $10 printable, sells one copy, and the buyer pays no sales tax. The listing fee is $0.20, the transaction fee is $0.65 (6.5%), and processing is $0.55 (3% of $10 plus $0.25). Fees total $1.40 and the seller keeps $8.60. If that same order came through an Offsite Ad at 15%, another $1.50 goes, leaving $7.10. Change the price to $4 and fees take a far larger share, because $0.45 of them is fixed.

Run your own numbers in the free Etsy Profit Margin Calculator before you set a price; it handles the processing rates and Offsite Ads. The full breakdown at five price points, with refunds included, is in Etsy digital product profit margins, and the pricing logic behind the number is in our digital product pricing strategy.

Etsy digital shop tutorial: from zero to first listing

The set-up itself takes an afternoon. Do it in this order so you do not publish a listing before payments and policies are in place.

Set up the shop and the first listing
  1. 1
    Open the shop

Create the shop, pay the set-up fee if your country has one, and connect your bank account for Etsy Payments.

  2. 2
    Write the shop basics

Shop name, an About section that says what you make, and a policy line on digital refunds.

  3. 3
    Create a listing

Choose Digital files under What type of item is it? and pick instant or made-to-order.

  4. 4
    Attach the files

Up to five files, 20MB each, named exactly as you want the buyer to see them.

  5. 5
    Add images and description

Mockups that show the product in use, what is included, file formats, what software opens it, and the AI line if needed.

  6. 6
    Set the buyer note

One shop-wide note for digital buyers: which file to open first and how to get help.

  7. 7
    Test, then publish

Run the QA checklist below before the listing goes public.

Write titles and descriptions for the buyer's search, not your brand. Lead the title with what the item is ("Wedding seating chart template"), then the format and the use ("editable in Canva, printable"). The first image should show the finished product in context; Etsy's own image rules for personalised items require the first image to show a finished, customised version rather than placeholder text.

The digital-download delivery QA checklist

Most one-star reviews on digital items are delivery problems, not design problems: a file that will not open, a missing page, a link that asks for permission. Run this list on every listing before it goes live, ideally by buying it once with a second account or a 100%-off coupon.

Before any digital listing goes public
  • Every file opens on a phone and a computer, outside your own design software
  • File names are clear, under 70 characters and in the order the buyer should open them
  • Each file is under 20MB; large sets are split or zipped sensibly
  • Canva or Google links inside the PDF are set to view or make-a-copy, not edit
  • Print sizes in the description match the files (A4 and US Letter both included if you promise both)
  • The description lists what is included, file types and the software needed
  • AI use is disclosed in the description where it applies
  • The shop-wide buyer note explains where to start and how to get help
  • A test purchase reaches the Downloads page and every file downloads

Selling digital downloads on Etsy in 2026: your first 90 days

A new shop has no reviews and no sales history, so the first three months are about learning what your niche responds to, not about volume. A schedule that keeps the work focused:

A realistic first 90 days
  1. Week 1
    Research and first product

Pick one buyer problem in one niche; make one product you can finish to a high standard.

  2. Weeks 2 to 4
    Five to ten listings

Variations of the same product type, each its own listing with its own search phrase.

  3. Weeks 5 to 8
    Read the stats

Shop Manager shows views and visits per listing. Rewrite titles and first images on listings with views but no sales.

  4. Weeks 9 to 12
    Double down

Expand whatever earned the first sales into bundles, sizes and adjacent products; retire the rest before renewal.

Two habits help more than anything else. First, validate before you design: our digital product validation checklist shows how to read demand from Etsy search in an afternoon. Second, keep a simple log of each listing's price, views and sales so decisions come from your shop's data rather than other people's screenshots. If you want ideas to test, the best digital products to sell in 2026 lists categories with demand notes.

Refunds, support and reviews on digital items

Digital buyers rarely ask for refunds because they dislike the design. They ask because they could not open the file, bought the wrong size, or expected an editable file and got a flat PDF. Each of those is preventable in the description, which is why the QA list above checks the description as well as the files.

Decide your refund stance before the first sale and write it into your shop policies. Many digital sellers do not refund once files are downloaded, but fix or replace any file that does not work. Whatever you choose, answer messages quickly: a buyer who gets the right file within a few hours usually leaves a normal review, while one who waits a day often does not. If you do refund through Etsy Payments, Etsy says the processing fee is credited back in proportion to the refunded amount (checked October 2026); the listing fee is not, because service fees are non-refundable under the fees policy.

Keep a saved reply for the three questions you will get most: where to find the download, how to open a ZIP on a phone, and how to copy a Canva or Google template to their own account. Those three replies cover most of the support load of a template or printable shop.

Common mistakes new Etsy digital sellers make

  • Listing before testing delivery. A broken file earns a refund request and a review that stays on the listing.
  • Pricing from competitors' prices alone. A $3 file that sells through an Offsite Ad leaves very little after fixed fees.
  • Skipping the AI disclosure. It is a listed requirement, and listings that break the Creativity Standards can be removed, with fees still owed.
  • Treating every product as a separate shop. One shop with a clear theme builds reviews faster than three shops with a few listings each.
  • Depending on Etsy alone. Etsy can change ranking or fees with notice. Collect buyer interest through your own channels too.

When you are ready to sell beyond Etsy, our Digital Products program covers the full path: picking a product, building it with AI tools, listing it on Etsy and Gumroad, and moving buyers onto an email list you own.

Etsy or your own store?

Etsy is the better start when you have no audience and the product is searched for by name. Your own checkout is the better start when you already have followers, sell higher-priced items or want the customer's email. Many sellers end up doing both: Etsy for discovery, an owned store for repeat buyers and bundles. Compare the platforms by your own price and volume with the Platform Break-Even Calculator, and read how to sell templates if your product is a Canva or Notion template.

Selling digital products on Etsy: FAQ

Can you sell digital products on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy accepts digital downloads of designs you created yourself, such as printables, planners, templates, graphics, audio and text documents. Its Creativity Standards class them as 'designed by a seller'. Items you did not create, such as a PDF of someone else's book, resold PLR or AI prompt bundles, do not qualify. If you used AI to generate the item, you must say so in the listing description. Checked October 2026.

How much does Etsy charge to sell a digital download?

For a US seller, Etsy charges $0.20 to list or renew an item, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price, and Etsy Payments processing of 3% plus $0.25 per order. Offsite Ads add 15% (12% for larger shops) on orders they bring in. Some countries also pay a one-time set-up fee. Processing rates differ by country, so check the table for your bank location. Checked October 2026.

How do Etsy digital downloads work for the buyer?

For an instant download, the buyer pays and the files you attached become available straight away on their Downloads page and through the order email. Nothing is shipped. For a made-to-order digital item, the buyer waits until you upload the finished file and complete the order, and Etsy emails them that it is ready. Either way, the buyer can see the shop-wide note you set for digital buyers.

What file types and sizes can I upload to an Etsy digital listing?

Etsy lets you attach up to five files per instant-download listing, with a maximum of 20MB each. Supported types include PDF, ZIP, PNG, JPG, GIF, DOC, RTF, TXT, MP3, MOV, EPUB and STL. File names are limited to 70 characters and cannot be renamed after upload, so name them before you attach them. Larger products usually go in a ZIP or behind a link inside a PDF. Checked October 2026.

Do I need to disclose AI on Etsy digital products?

Yes. Etsy's Creativity Standards allow seller-prompted AI creations under 'designed by a seller', but you must disclose in the listing description that the item was created with AI. AI prompt bundles are listed as not qualifying at all. Put a plain sentence near the top of the description, such as 'Illustrations generated with AI from my own prompts, then edited and laid out by me.' Checked October 2026.

Should I turn off Etsy Offsite Ads for digital products?

Shops under $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days can opt out; above that, participation is required at 12% on attributed orders. For low-priced downloads the 15% fee can take a large share of the margin, so many small shops opt out until they know their numbers. Run your price through a margin calculator with and without the fee before deciding. Checked October 2026.
