To delete Instagram in 2026, go to Accounts Center, then Personal details, Account ownership and control, Deactivation or deletion, and choose Delete account. The account is hidden at once and permanently deleted after 30 days; logging back in before then cancels it. Download your data first, and deactivate instead if there is any chance you will want the account back.
To delete your Instagram account, open Accounts Center from your profile menu, tap Personal details, then Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion, pick the account and choose Delete account. Instagram hides the account immediately and deletes it permanently 30 days later, unless you log back in first.
Steps checked in October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center articles on deleting your account, deactivating it temporarily and downloading your information. Meta moves menu labels around; if a label differs on your phone, search "deletion" inside Settings.
The old shortcut, a web page that deleted the account in one form, now sends you into the same Accounts Center flow. That is the only route. This guide covers the three things people regret skipping: saving a copy of their data, checking what else is tied to the account, and deciding whether deactivation would have done the job. If you are here because the account is restricted or disabled rather than unwanted, start with our Instagram account help hub instead; deleting will not fix a restriction.
Before you delete: the pre-flight check
Deletion is the one Instagram action you cannot reverse after the window closes. Ten minutes here saves the photos, the handle and the connected logins you will otherwise lose.
- Request "Download your information" and wait until the file arrives
- Save any DMs, voice notes or drafts you care about (drafts are not in every export)
- Remove "Log in with Instagram" from other apps and set a password there instead
- Cancel subscriptions billed through Instagram, the App Store or Google Play
- Tell close contacts or customers where to find you next
- Decide whether you need the username: if yes, deactivate instead
- Check what the Threads warning screen says will happen to your Threads profile
Step 0: download a copy of your information
Once the 30 days pass, nobody can restore your posts, including Instagram support. The export gives you your photos, videos, Stories, Reels, captions, comments, messages and profile data as a file you keep.
- 1Open Accounts Center
Profile, menu (three lines), then Accounts Center.
- 2Your information and permissions
Tap it, then Download your information.
- 3Download or transfer information
Pick the Instagram account and choose all available information or only the types you want.
- 4Choose format and quality
HTML is easiest to browse. JSON is better if you plan to use a tool on it. Pick high media quality for photos.
- 5Wait for the notification
Large accounts can take hours or days. Instagram emails and notifies you when the file is ready.
- 6Download and open it
Confirm the photos open before you delete. The download link expires after a few days.
Keep the JSON version if you want a record of followers and following. It is the only official record of who followed the old account, which is handy if you later restart on a new one.
How to delete Instagram on iPhone or Android
The flow is the same on both phones. You need your password; if you log in through Facebook or forgot it, reset it first from the login screen.
- 1Go to your profile and tap the menu
The three lines in the top right corner.
- 2Tap Accounts Center
Near the top of Settings and activity.
- 3Personal details
Then Account ownership and control.
- 4Deactivation or deletion
Choose the Instagram account you want to remove if more than one is listed.
- 5Delete account, then Continue
Instagram asks for a reason. Any answer works; it does not change the outcome.
- 6Enter your password and confirm
The account is hidden immediately. Expected result: you are logged out and the 30-day countdown starts.
How to delete Instagram on a computer
On instagram.com, click More (bottom left), then Settings, then Accounts Center. From there the path is identical: Personal details, Account ownership and control, Deactivation or deletion, pick the account, Delete account. Mobile browsers work the same way if you would rather not use the app.
Deleting one account when you run several
Creators often keep a main account, a backup and a niche page in the same Accounts Center. Deletion works per account, so the only risk is picking the wrong one. When Deactivation or deletion asks which account to act on, read the handle on the screen twice before you tap Continue; the profile photo is easy to confuse when a backup uses the same picture.
- The other accounts stay live. Deleting one Instagram account does not touch the others in Accounts Center, even if they share an email address or phone number.
- Remove it from your phone afterwards. Log out of the deleted account on every device so the app does not quietly log it back in during the 30 days.
- Update cross-links. If your other accounts mention the deleted handle in their bio or pinned posts, edit those first, or visitors land on a dead profile.
Business and creator accounts: three extra checks
A professional account is wired into more places than a personal one. Deleting it removes those connections without warning the other side, so close them on purpose:
- Stop or move any running ads that use the account as their identity
- Screenshot or export the insights you want to keep; they go with the account
- Finish open orders and brand deals that promised posts on this handle
- Change the link in your email signature, website and other profiles
- Remove the account from schedulers and agencies that post for you
The last point matters twice: a scheduler that still holds a login can cancel the deletion by signing in. If an agency or a teammate manages the account, tell them before you start, and revoke their access from the account's settings.
What happens during the 30-day window
- Day 0You confirm deletion
Profile, posts, comments and likes are hidden from everyone.
- Days 1 to 30Grace period
Log in with your username and password and choose to keep the account to cancel.
- Day 30Permanent deletion
The account and its content can no longer be restored.
- Up to day 90Deletion completes
Instagram says the process can take up to 90 days; your data is not visible to others meanwhile.

Two details catch people out. First, logging in by accident cancels the deletion: an old phone, a tablet or a third-party scheduler that still holds your session can reopen the account. Log out of every device before you delete. Second, messages you sent stay in the other person's inbox; deleting your account does not unsend them. Instagram also notes that copies can remain in backup storage used for disaster recovery for a limited time after the 90 days.
Deactivate or delete: which one you actually want
Most people who delete want one of two things: a break, or a clean start. Deactivation covers the first without any risk.
| Deactivate | Delete | |
|---|---|---|
| Profile visible to others | No, hidden until you log in | No, hidden from the moment you confirm |
| How to undo | Log in at any time | Log in within 30 days |
| Time limit | None | 30 days, then permanent |
| Followers and posts | Kept | Deleted after 30 days |
| Username | Kept | Released; reusable only if nobody claims it |
| How often | Once a week | Once per account |
To deactivate, follow the same path and choose Deactivate account instead of Delete account. Instagram limits deactivation to once a week, so do not plan to toggle it daily. If your goal is privacy rather than leaving, a private account, a hidden activity status and removing followers you no longer want may do the job without losing anything.
- You never want the content again
- You saved your data export
- You do not care about the username
- No other apps log in through Instagram
- You want a break of any length
- You might return to the same audience
- The handle has value to you or a brand
- You are deleting in the heat of the moment
Troubleshooting: when deletion does not work
- No "Deactivation or deletion" option. Update the app, or use instagram.com in a browser. Some menus roll out unevenly.
- Forgot your password. Reset it from the login screen first; the flow will not continue without it.
- Account disabled or suspended. You usually cannot delete a disabled account from inside it. Our Instagram account help hub covers appeals and restrictions first.
- Hacked account. Secure it through Instagram's hacked-account flow before deleting, or the attacker may log in and cancel the deletion.
- Deletion "cancelled itself". Something logged in during the 30 days. Log out everywhere, revoke third-party app access in Settings, then delete again.
Deleting to start over? Read this first
Many creators delete a stalled account hoping a fresh one will perform better. Sometimes it does, but usually for reasons unrelated to the deletion: a clearer niche, better hooks, a consistent format. A new account starts with zero followers and no history. Before you burn the old one, check why the account stalled; if the problem is the content, it follows you to the new handle.
Two quick diagnostics before you decide: our checklist on why Reels stop getting views covers the eleven causes we see most, and the Instagram algorithm guide explains how ranking treats an established account versus a new one. If you want to step back from being on camera rather than leave, read growing an account without showing your face first.
If you do restart, our Instagram Ignited program walks through positioning, the first 30 days of content and the Reels system we use on new accounts, so the second attempt is built on purpose rather than luck.
Deleting an Instagram account: FAQ
How do I permanently delete my Instagram account in 2026?
Open Instagram, go to your profile, tap the menu, then Accounts Center. Tap Personal details, then Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion. Pick the account, choose Delete account, tap Continue, give a reason and re-enter your password. The account is hidden at once and permanently deleted after 30 days unless you log back in. The same path works from Settings on instagram.com.
Can I get my Instagram account back after deleting it?
Only during the 30 days after you request deletion. Log in with your username and password in that window and Instagram offers to keep the account, which cancels the request. After 30 days the account and its content are permanently deleted and cannot be restored by you or by Instagram support, so download anything you want to keep before you start.
What is the difference between deactivating and deleting Instagram?
Deactivating hides your profile, posts, comments and likes until you log back in, and there is no deadline to return. Instagram lets you do it once a week. Deleting starts a 30-day countdown, after which the account, followers, posts and messages are gone for good. If you are unsure, deactivate first: you can always delete later, but you cannot undo a completed deletion.
How long does Instagram take to delete an account?
Your account disappears from view as soon as you confirm, and it is permanently deleted 30 days after the request. Instagram's help center says the full deletion process can take up to 90 days from the start, during which your information is not visible to other people. Copies may remain longer in disaster-recovery backups. Checked October 2026.
Does deleting Instagram delete my Facebook or Threads account?
Deleting an Instagram account does not delete a Facebook account, even if both sit in the same Accounts Center. Each account is deleted on its own from Deactivation or deletion. Threads profiles are tied to Instagram, so check Threads settings before you delete; Meta has changed how the two link more than once, and the in-app warning screen shows what will be affected.
Can I use the same username after deleting my account?
Instagram says you can sign up again with the same username, or add it to another account, once the deletion is complete, as long as no one else has taken it in the meantime. If the account was removed for breaking the Community Guidelines, you may not get the username back. If the handle matters to you, keep it on a deactivated account instead.
