Quick answer

Instagram never tells you that you were blocked, and it shows no list of who blocked you. The check that settles it is a friend's account: if they can open the profile and you cannot, you are blocked, and if nobody can, the account is deactivated or deleted. Instagram documents six effects of a block. Screens such as User not found are inferences that also fit a deactivated or renamed account.

You know someone blocked you on Instagram when their profile will not open for you but still opens for a friend looking from another account. Instagram never notifies you and has no list of who blocked you, so that comparison is the only check that separates a block from a deactivated, deleted or renamed account.

Every Instagram rule on this page was read in the Instagram Help Center on 13 October 2026: what happens when you block someone, block or unblock someone, restrict, mute, remove a follower, deactivate and delete. Words in double quotes are Instagram's own. Where Instagram says nothing, this page says so.

Quick answer

Blocked on Instagram: the short version
  • Instagram does not notify you, and no screen lists who blocked you.
  • Decisive check: a friend can open their profile and you cannot. That combination means a block.
  • If nobody can open the profile, the account is deactivated, deleted or suspended. It is not about you.
  • Instagram documents six effects of a block. "User not found" and a dead Follow button are not among them.
  • Skip every "who blocked me" app. Instagram publishes no such data, and many of these apps ask for your password.

If the problem is Instagram limiting your own account, with an action block or an account restricted notice, that is a different issue: start with the Instagram account help hub. To understand restrict on its own, see what restrict means on Instagram.

Does Instagram tell you when someone blocks you?

No. Instagram's wording is "People aren't notified when you block them", and the same sentence appears on its pages about the effects of a block, how to block and removing a follower. There is also no list to consult. The Help Center explains how to see who you have blocked, under Settings and then Blocked, and offers nothing for the opposite direction.

That is the design. Blocking is a safety tool, and it would protect nobody if the blocked person received an alert. So every method of finding out, including the ones below, works by noticing side effects.

Signs someone blocked you: what Instagram documents and what is a guess

Most guides list signs without saying where they come from. This table separates the effects Instagram states in its Help Center from the things people have noticed on their own screens. Only the first group is reliable, and one of those you cannot see.

What you noticeStatusWhat Instagram says, or what else causes it
No notification arrivesDocumented"People aren't notified when you block them." This is why every check below is indirect.
Your likes and comments vanish from their photos and videosDocumentedRemoved by the block. "Unblocking someone won't restore their previous likes and comments."
You can no longer mention or tag themDocumentedAfter a block, the blocked person "won't be able to mention your username or tag you."
Your messages stop arrivingDocumented, but invisible to youThey "won't receive those messages", now or after an unblock. Your screen does not show it.
You no longer follow themDocumentedInstagram says you can block someone "to get them to stop following you."
You cannot join a room they createDocumentedA blocked person "won't be able to join a room you create" while logged in.
Their profile shows "User not found" or no postsInferenceInstagram does not describe this screen. A deactivated, deleted, suspended or renamed account can look the same.
Search no longer finds themInferenceAlso what a changed username or a deactivated account looks like.
The Follow button does nothingInferenceReported by users, not documented. An app glitch or a follow limit does the same.
Their name or photo is missing from your chatInferenceNot documented. A deactivated or deleted account is the other common cause.

Notice what is missing from the documented rows. Instagram tells the person doing the blocking what will change for them. It does not publish what the blocked person's screen shows, which is why the labels people quote ("User not found", "No posts yet", "Sorry, this page isn't available") differ between guides and app versions. Use those screens as a reason to check, not as an answer.

How to check if someone blocked you on Instagram

You need the Instagram app and one friend. The check takes a few minutes.

The block check, in order
  1. 1
Open their profile from your account

Search the exact username, or tap their name in an old chat or comment. If the profile opens with posts as usual, you are not blocked. Stop here unless comments or messages seem off.

  2. 2
    Check your Following list

Instagram says a block makes the blocked person stop following. If they are gone from your Following list and you did not unfollow them, a block or a follower removal happened.

  3. 3
Find a post of theirs you commented on

Ask your friend to open it. A block removes your likes and comments from their photos and videos, so a comment that is gone for everyone matches a block.

  4. 4
Ask a friend to open the profile

This is the deciding step. Visible to them and not to you means blocked. Invisible to both of you means deactivated, deleted or suspended.

Reading the result
Your friend can
Not blocked. If your comments seem ignored, test for a restrict below.
Blocked. This is the only combination that points to a block.
Your friend cannot
Not a block. Your friend may be the one who is blocked, or the account is private.
Deactivated, deleted or suspended. The account is hidden from everyone.
You can open the profile
You cannot open it

Two shortcuts that guides repeat are weaker than they sound. Opening the profile in a logged-out browser tells you little, because Instagram's help pages do not describe what that view shows. Sending a test message tells you nothing, because your screen looks the same whether or not the message arrives.

Blocked, removed, restricted, muted or deactivated?

Six situations can feel alike from your side. The middle column is what Instagram's Help Center says; the last column is what that leaves you able to observe.

SituationWhat Instagram says happensWhat you can observe
BlockedYour likes and comments on their posts are removed, you cannot mention or tag them, and your messages are not delivered.Their profile is closed to you while other people can still open it.
Removed as a followerA private account can remove followers. "They aren't notified that you've removed them."You no longer follow them, but the profile still opens and you can ask to follow again.
RestrictedYou cannot see when they are online or whether they read your messages, your new comments are visible only to you unless they approve them, and your chat moves to their Message Requests.A comment you leave does not appear when you look from another account.
MutedThey stop seeing your posts, stories or messages. "Instagram won't let them know you muted them."Nothing. A mute changes only their feed.
DeactivatedTheir "photos, comments and likes will be hidden" until they log back in.Nobody can open the profile, including your friends.
DeletedProfile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are permanently removed, 30 days after the request.Nobody can open the profile, and it does not return.

Sources: remove a follower, restrict, mute, deactivate and delete, read 13 October 2026. Instagram adds that a person can deactivate only once a week and that deletion "may take up to 90 days" to complete. A suspended account also disappears for everyone, and you cannot tell it from a deactivated one from outside.

Block or restrict: the two that get confused
If they blocked you
  • Your old likes and comments on their posts are removed
  • You cannot mention or tag them
  • Your messages are not delivered, now or later
  • You stop following them
  • A friend can still open their profile
If they restricted you
  • Their profile and posts look normal to you
  • Your new comments show only to you until they approve them
  • You cannot see when they are online or whether they read a message
  • Your chat sits in their Message Requests
  • From a friend's account, your new comment is missing

The restrict test is your comments. Leave an ordinary comment on one of their posts and have a friend look for it. If only you can see it, you are probably restricted. A mute cannot be detected at all, and that is intended.

What happens to your messages when someone blocks you?

Instagram describes this from the blocker's side: "your messaging threads with them will remain in your Direct inbox, but you won't be able to message them." Anything the blocked person sends is not received, and those messages "won't be delivered later if you unblock them." Group chats are the exception. The blocker is asked whether to stay or leave, and if they stay, both of you still see each other's messages in that group.

Instagram says nothing about the conversation leaving the blocked person's inbox, so a chat that vanished is not evidence of a block. Chats disappear for reasons Instagram does document:

  • Vanish mode. Content sent in vanish mode "disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off."
  • Disappearing messages. With disappearing messages on, messages stay only for the duration the sender chose.
  • A deleted chat. Deleting a conversation removes it only for the person who deleted it, so check whether you removed it yourself.
  • A restrict. Your chat moves to their Message Requests and you stop seeing read receipts.

Are "who blocked me" apps safe?

No, and they cannot work. Instagram does not publish who blocked whom, so an app has nothing official to read. To produce an answer it has to log in as you and collect data, or guess from follower changes.

Both routes run into Instagram's Terms of Use, which say you can't "access or collect information in unauthorized ways", including "in an automated way without our express permission", and which bar anyone from collecting "Instagram usernames, passwords". The Help Center's page on third party apps is blunter: "Never share your login information with any person or app you don't trust."

The same applies to follower trackers. Our reviews of unfollow tools that need no login and of ways to see who unfollowed you for free explain what a third-party app can honestly see.

What to do if you are blocked

  • Do not go around it. A new account made to reach someone who blocked you is the behaviour the "accounts they may create" option exists to stop.
  • Old chats are not a back door. Messages you send are not delivered, even after an unblock.
  • If it matters, use a channel you already share, such as a mutual friend, and accept the answer.
  • If you run a creator or business account, one person blocking you does not explain a drop in reach.

That last point confuses people. A block is between two accounts. If views fell across every post at once, work through the free Instagram Reach Drop Diagnoser, check whether the account itself is limited in Instagram account restricted, and run the steps in how to check for a shadowban. Timing matters as well, which is what the best time to post on Instagram covers. How the Instagram algorithm decides who sees a post, and how to read your insights each week, is what our Instagram Ignited program teaches.

If you want to block someone yourself

You can block from a profile or from a chat, and the person is not notified (Instagram's steps). Choose the option that includes their other and future accounts if you want it to hold, and note Instagram's exception: other accounts of theirs that you already follow have to be blocked one by one. Instagram adds that a blocked person cannot join a room you create. If you broadcast to your followers, our guide on how to go live on Instagram covers the setup.

Instagram lists gentler options on the same page: remove them as a follower, restrict them, or block them from commenting. If you would rather step away from the platform, how to delete or deactivate your Instagram account explains the difference.

Blocked on Instagram: questions people ask

Does Instagram tell you when someone blocks you?

No. The Instagram Help Center says "People aren't notified when you block them", and it repeats that line on three separate pages. You get no alert, no message and no change in your notifications. The only way to find out is to notice the side effects and then confirm them from a second account or with a friend.

Can you see a list of who blocked you on Instagram?

No. Instagram gives you a list of the accounts you have blocked, under Settings and then Blocked, and nothing in the other direction. No screen, export or official tool shows who blocked you. An app or website that claims to show that list has no source for it, so it is guessing or collecting logins.

What does "User not found" mean on Instagram?

It means Instagram could not show you that profile, and Instagram does not document what causes the message. People report it after a block, but also when an account is deactivated, deleted, suspended or renamed. Treat it as a reason to run the second-account check and never as proof by itself.

How can I tell if I was blocked or the account was deactivated?

Have a friend open the same profile from their account. If they can see it and you cannot, you are blocked. If nobody can see it, the account is deactivated, deleted or suspended. Instagram says a deactivated profile has its photos, comments and likes hidden until the owner logs back in.

If someone blocks you on Instagram, can you still message them?

You can type and send, but Instagram says messages from a blocked person are not received and "won't be delivered later if you unblock them". The existing thread stays in the inbox of the person who blocked you. Nothing on your screen confirms delivery either way, so a test message proves nothing.

Can someone who blocked me still see my likes and comments?

In some places, yes. Instagram says "People that you block can still see your likes and comments on posts that were shared by public accounts or accounts they follow." What a block removes is the blocked person's likes and comments on the blocker's own photos and videos, and unblocking does not bring them back.

Do "who blocked me on Instagram" apps work?

No. Instagram does not publish that information, so no app can read it. Instagram's Terms of Use bar collecting information "in an automated way without our express permission" and bar asking for other people's usernames and passwords, and its Help Center says never to share your login with an app you do not trust.
