The best MCP servers in 2026 are vendor-run remote servers you add with one command: GitHub, Context7, Playwright, Supabase, Notion, Linear, Sentry and Stripe come first. This list ranks 25, each with the setup string from the vendor's own docs and the documented thing that breaks. Many entries on older lists are now archived, renamed or on retired /sse endpoints, so check the status table before you copy a config.
The best MCP servers in 2026 are the vendor-run ones you add with a single command: GitHub, Context7, Playwright, Supabase, Notion, Linear, Sentry and Stripe cover most of what a builder does in a week. Below are 25, ranked, each with the setup one-liner from the vendor's own docs and the documented thing that breaks.
Checked October 2026 against each server's repository or docs, including the MCP reference servers and their archive, the MCP Registry, the 2026-07-28 spec changelog, and the docs for GitHub, Supabase, Notion, Linear, Sentry, Stripe, Slack and Zapier. Repository status was read from GitHub on 11 October 2026.
The ranking is our judgement, not a benchmark: we did not time these servers or score their output. If the protocol itself is new to you, start with our MCP guide, which explains hosts, clients and servers. If you only care about coding assistants, the best MCP servers for coding has config for Cursor, Codex and OpenCode.
How this MCP server list is ranked
Most lists rank by popularity. This one ranks by how likely a server is to still work, and still be worth its context, a month after you add it.
- Run or maintained by the vendor whose product it touches, with a live repository or docs page
- Covers a job most builders do every week, not once a quarter
- Sets up with one command or one URL, ideally with OAuth and no key to paste
- Can be narrowed: read-only mode, one project, or a subset of tools
- Its known limits are written down by the vendor, so you can plan around them
Setup strings are shown for Claude Code where the vendor publishes one, and as the bare endpoint otherwise. Any MCP client can use the same endpoint.
The best MCP servers: 1 to 8, install these first
These eight map to the working week of someone shipping a product: code, docs, testing, data, notes, tickets, errors and payments. All are official.
| Server | Use it for | Setup from the official docs | Known breakage or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. GitHub MCP Server | Issues, pull requests, repos and Actions | https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ | GitHub's guide says claude mcp add-json can return "Invalid input" on Windows; use the --transport http form. Default toolsets are context, repos, issues, pull requests and users. |
| 2. Context7 | Current, version-specific library docs in the prompt | npx ctx7 setup | Rate-limited without a free API key. Setup offers a CLI plus skill mode that skips MCP entirely. |
| 3. Playwright MCP | Driving a real browser through accessibility snapshots | claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest | A persistent profile serves one browser at a time, so parallel clients conflict. The README suggests the Playwright CLI for coding agents to save tokens. |
| 4. Supabase MCP | Schema, SQL and project tools for Supabase | https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp | Runs with your developer permissions. Add project_ref and read_only=true. Local CLI and self-hosted versions have fewer tools and no OAuth. |
| 5. Notion MCP | Searching, reading and writing workspace pages | claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp | The local notion-mcp-server package is no longer actively maintained and Notion says it may sunset it. |
| 6. Linear MCP | Issues, projects and comments | claude mcp add --transport http linear-server https://mcp.linear.app/mcp | The /sse URL is a deprecated fallback. An internal server error on connect is fixed by clearing ~/.mcp-auth. |
| 7. Sentry MCP | Errors, traces and issue triage for one project | https://mcp.sentry.dev/mcp/{organizationSlug}/{projectSlug} | The repository moved to getsentry/toolkit. In local stdio mode the AI search tools need your own LLM provider key. |
| 8. Stripe MCP | Reading and writing through the Stripe API, plus docs search | claude mcp add --transport http stripe https://mcp.stripe.com/ | The OAuth screen can grant live-mode accounts as well as sandboxes; grant the sandbox. Managed networks may block mcp.stripe.com. |
Two notes on the top of the table. GitHub ships --read-only and --toolsets flags, plus a lockdown mode that withholds public-repository content from authors without push access; GitHub calls it a best-effort filter, not an authorization boundary. Context7 ranks second because stale library knowledge is the most common way a coding assistant wastes your time, and it is one of the few entries here that fixes a model problem instead of an access problem.
Copy-paste setup for the first five
Each command is taken from the vendor's docs. Run them in a terminal, not inside a Claude Code session, then type /mcp in a session to sign in to the OAuth ones. Install Claude Code first if you have not.
# 1. GitHub (remote server, personal access token)
claude mcp add-json github '{"type":"http","url":"https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp","headers":{"Authorization":"Bearer YOUR_GITHUB_PAT"}}'
# 2. Context7 (asks whether to install as MCP or as CLI + skill)
npx ctx7 setup
# 3. Playwright (local browser)
claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest
# 4. Supabase (one project, read-only)
claude mcp add --scope project --transport http supabase "https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp?project_ref=YOUR_PROJECT_REF&read_only=true"
# 5. Notion (OAuth on first use)
claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcpThe most useful MCP servers for specific jobs: 9 to 18
Add these when the job turns up. Each is strong at one thing and has one limit worth knowing first.
| Server | Use it for | Setup from the official docs | Known breakage or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9. Vercel MCP | Projects, deployments, logs and docs search | claude mcp add --transport http vercel https://mcp.vercel.com | Only works in clients Vercel has reviewed and approved. |
| 10. Figma MCP | Design context for code, and writing to the canvas | claude mcp add --transport http figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp | Only clients in Figma's MCP Catalog can connect. Read tools are capped by seat: 20 calls a month on Starter or View seats, 200 a day on Dev and Full seats. |
| 11. Chrome DevTools MCP | Network, console and performance traces | npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latest | Exposes everything in that browser to the client. Usage statistics are on by default; pass --no-usage-statistics. |
| 12. Firecrawl MCP | Scrape, crawl and search the web as markdown | https://mcp.firecrawl.dev/v2/mcp | Without a key only scrape, search and parse work, rate-limited. The full profile lists 27 tools, a lot for clients with tool limits. |
| 13. Exa MCP | Web search and page fetch built for agents | https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp | Works anonymously with rate limits; sign in with OAuth or a key for higher ones. |
| 14. Tavily MCP | Search, extract, map and crawl | claude mcp add --transport http tavily https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp | The first option in the README puts your API key in the URL. Use the OAuth flow so the key stays out of shared config. |
| 15. Slack MCP | Search, read and send messages, canvases | https://mcp.slack.com/mcp | No SSE and no dynamic client registration: the client must be backed by a registered Slack app, which workspace admins approve and manage. |
| 16. Atlassian Rovo MCP | Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket | claude mcp add --transport http atlassian https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp | v2 is the recommended endpoint; clients set up on v1 may need cached credentials cleared. Jira Service Management tools need API-token sign-in. |
| 17. Zapier MCP | Actions across thousands of apps without a server each | https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect | Each successful tool call uses two tasks from your Zapier plan. Streamable HTTP only. |
| 18. n8n MCP server | Finding, running and building your own workflows | Settings > Instance-level MCP (URL ends in /mcp-server/http) | You enable MCP for the instance, then per workflow. Access is not scoped per client: every connected client sees every enabled workflow. |
Three web servers made the list because they lean different ways. Firecrawl is strongest at turning a known URL or site into clean markdown; Exa and Tavily are search-first. One is enough for most projects, so pick the API you already pay for.
Zapier and n8n are the automation entries. Zapier trades money for breadth: no server per app, but two tasks per call. n8n's built-in server exposes workflows you built, which suits anyone already running n8n. Our AI agent automation guide covers when an agent should call a workflow at all.
Top MCP servers 2026: 19 to 25, specialist picks
These are excellent for the right person and noise for everyone else. Install one only if you already use the product.
| Server | Use it for | Setup from the official docs | Known breakage or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19. Cloudflare API MCP | The whole Cloudflare API through three tools | https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp | The older product servers (Workers Bindings, Observability, Radar and more) are listed as deprecated. Legacy SSE requests get 410 Gone. |
| 20. Hugging Face MCP | Models, datasets and Gradio Spaces as tools | claude mcp add hf-mcp-server -t http https://huggingface.co/mcp?login | Tools and Spaces are chosen at huggingface.co/settings/mcp. Add ?no_image_content=true to strip image blocks from Gradio results. |
| 21. MongoDB MCP Server | Queries and Atlas management | npx -y mongodb-mcp-server@latest --readOnly | Node 20 support is deprecated; use Node 22.13 or later. The examples ship read-only on purpose. |
| 22. Neon MCP | Postgres branches, schema changes and queries | npx add-mcp https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp | Neon says local development and IDE use only, not production. With IP Allow on, allowlist the server's two addresses. |
| 23. Apify MCP | Thousands of ready-made scrapers as tools | https://mcp.apify.com | The /sse endpoint has been removed; drop the suffix. Actor runs are paid from your Apify account. |
| 24. Filesystem (reference) | File access for clients that have none | npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem /path/to/dir | Exits at startup if you pass no directory and the client lacks roots support. Reference code, not a hardened product. |
| 25. Memory (reference) | A small local knowledge graph across chats | npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory | A basic implementation by its own description. On Windows launch npx through cmd /c. |
- 2,594 tools if every endpoint is a tool
- About 1,100 tokens for the same API through 3 code-mode tools
Source: cloudflare/mcp README, checked October 2026
That figure is the best argument for a short list. In most clients tool definitions are loaded whether you call them or not, so a server with hundreds of tools taxes every message. Stripe makes the same choice: a handful of generic API tools instead of one per endpoint.
Near misses. Brave Search has an official server; version 2 switched its default transport to stdio and its local search needs a Pro plan. Perplexity hosts one at api.perplexity.ai/mcp. AWS publishes dozens under awslabs/mcp, with a managed AWS MCP Server in preview. Google's MCP Toolbox for Databases is an open-source server for connecting agents to databases. Docker's MCP Toolkit runs local servers in containers, which is the safer way to try anything not on this page.
Skipped on purpose. The Git, Fetch, Time and Sequential Thinking reference servers. Current coding clients read repositories and fetch pages natively, and the reference repository says its servers are educational examples, not production-ready ones.
Known breakages: what older lists still get wrong
MCP lists rot quickly because the ecosystem moved from local packages to hosted endpoints in under two years. The 2026-07-28 spec formally marks the old HTTP+SSE transport and OAuth dynamic client registration as deprecated, and vendors are acting on it.
| If a list tells you to use | Status in October 2026 | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Reference servers for GitHub, PostgreSQL, Puppeteer, Slack, Brave Search, SQLite, Google Drive | Archived; the archive states no security updates | GitHub MCP Server, Supabase or Neon, Playwright, Slack MCP, Brave's own server |
| Notion local server (notion-mcp-server) | No longer actively maintained | Remote Notion MCP |
| ElevenLabs local server (elevenlabs-mcp) | Deprecated; repository archived | Hosted server at api.elevenlabs.io/v1/mcp |
| Any URL ending in /sse | Removed by Apify, deprecated by Linear, 410 Gone at Cloudflare; not supported by Slack or Zapier | The /mcp Streamable HTTP endpoint |
| Cloudflare Workers Bindings, Observability and Radar servers | Listed as deprecated | Cloudflare API MCP Server |
| sentry-mcp, supabase-community/supabase-mcp, stripe/agent-toolkit, genai-toolbox | Renamed to getsentry/toolkit, supabase/mcp, stripe/ai, googleapis/mcp-toolbox | Same projects; update bookmarks and install strings |
| PostHog/mcp repository | Archived; moved into the PostHog monorepo | npx @posthog/wizard@latest mcp add |
- An npx package under @modelcontextprotocol for a third-party product
- A URL that ends in /sse
- An API key pasted into a JSON file
- A repository last pushed a year ago, or marked archived
- No mention of read-only mode or scopes
- A vendor domain: mcp.vendor.com/mcp
- OAuth sign-in on first use
- Read-only or project-scoped variants in the docs
- A repository pushed this month, owned by the vendor
- Listed in the official MCP Registry
The patterns behind the useful ones
Read the three tables again and the same traits repeat. They are a quick test for any server that is not on this page.
- Remote beats local when the data is remote. Notion and ElevenLabs both stopped maintaining local servers in favour of hosted ones. Local still wins for files, browsers and databases on your machine.
- Scope is in the URL. Supabase takes
project_refandread_only, Sentry takes an organisation and project in the path, Linear has a/mcp/readonlyendpoint, Neon takesreadonly=true. - Fewer, broader tools. Cloudflare's three-tool server exists to save context, and Chrome DevTools has a
--slimmode for basic browser tasks. - Some vendors gate the client, not just the user. Vercel, Figma and Slack only accept clients they have approved, so a server can work in Claude Code and fail in a tool you wrote yourself.
Build your own short list
Do not install 25 servers. Pick a set for the work in front of you and keep the rest as bookmarks.
- 1Shipping a SaaS
GitHub, Context7, Supabase, Stripe, Vercel. Add Sentry once you have users and Playwright once you have flows worth testing.
- 2Running automations
n8n or Zapier, plus Notion and Slack. Let the agent trigger workflows you already trust instead of giving it raw API access.
- 3Research and content
One search server (Exa or Tavily), Firecrawl for full pages, Notion to file what you find.
- 4Then prune monthly
Remove any server you did not call. Re-check the vendor repository for renames and retired endpoints.
When none of the 25 fits, a small server of your own that exposes three or four safe actions is often better than a large general one. Our AI SaaS Builder program spends two modules on MCP, including building a first server and wiring Firecrawl, Exa and Supabase into a development workflow. For the tool-calling mechanics underneath, see Claude API function calling.
Best MCP servers: FAQ
What are the best MCP servers in 2026?
For most builders the first eight are GitHub, Context7, Playwright, Supabase, Notion, Linear, Sentry and Stripe. Each is run or maintained by the vendor, installs with one command or URL, and covers a job that comes up weekly: code, docs, browser testing, database, notes, tickets, errors and payments. Add others only when a specific task needs them.
Where can I find a full MCP server list?
The official MCP Registry at registry.modelcontextprotocol.io describes itself as an app store for MCP servers and launched in preview in September 2025. The modelcontextprotocol/servers repository on GitHub now holds only a small set of reference servers and points to the registry for everything else. For any single product, the vendor's own docs are the most reliable source for the current endpoint.
How many MCP servers should I install?
As few as the current project needs, usually two to five. Every server adds tool descriptions to the model's context whether you use them or not. Cloudflare's own numbers show the extreme: its full API as native MCP tools would cost over a million tokens, against about 1,100 in its code-mode server. In Claude Code, the /context command shows what each server costs.
Are the reference MCP servers safe for production?
The repository says no. Its README describes Filesystem, Git, Fetch, Memory and the others as reference implementations meant as educational examples, not production-ready solutions. The older reference servers for GitHub, PostgreSQL, Puppeteer, Slack and others sit in a separate archived repository that states no security updates will be provided. Prefer the vendor-maintained replacement where one exists.
Why did my MCP server stop working?
The usual causes in 2026 are a retired endpoint, an archived package or a moved repository. Apify removed its /sse endpoint, Linear calls its own a deprecated fallback, and Cloudflare answers legacy SSE requests with 410 Gone. Switch the URL to the /mcp endpoint, sign in again, and check the vendor repository for a rename or a deprecation notice.
Is a remote or a local MCP server better?
Use remote when the vendor offers it: there is nothing to install or update, sign-in is OAuth, and access can be revoked from the vendor's settings. Use local servers for things that live on your machine, such as files, a browser or a local database. Notion and ElevenLabs have both stopped maintaining their local servers in favour of hosted ones.
Do MCP servers cost money?
The protocol is free and most servers are too, but the service behind them bills as usual. Zapier counts two tasks per successful tool call, Firecrawl spends credits, Apify bills Actor runs, and Figma caps read calls by plan and seat, from 20 a month on Starter to 600 a day on Enterprise. Check the pricing page of the product, not the server.
Tools connected. Now build something with them.
AI SaaS Builder, included in All Access, has two modules on MCP: using servers such as Firecrawl, Exa and Supabase in your workflow, and building MCP into your own product. The other three programs, live coaching and the private community come with it.
