Quick answer

Pick Cursor if you want an AI editor with tab completion and models from several vendors. Pick Claude Code if you want Anthropic's agent in the terminal, CI and the web on a flat Claude subscription. Both start at $20 a month, their agent features now overlap, and the Claude Code extension installs inside Cursor, so running both is a normal setup. This comparison is built from each vendor's documentation and pricing page.

Claude Code vs Cursor in one line: pick Cursor if you want an AI editor with tab completion and a choice of models from several vendors, and pick Claude Code if you want Anthropic's own agent across the terminal, CI, desktop and web on a flat Claude subscription. Both start at $20 a month, their agent features have converged, and the Claude Code extension installs inside Cursor, so plenty of builders run the two together.

Prices and features checked October 2026 against Cursor's pricing page, Cursor's docs on models and pricing, Agent, subagents, hooks, Cloud Agents and the CLI, the Claude pricing page, and Anthropic's Claude Code docs on setup, platforms, the VS Code extension and costs. The verdict is documentation-based: it rests on published pricing, limits and capabilities, not on a benchmark or usage logs of our own.

If Claude Code itself is new to you, our Claude Code complete guide explains the tool first. This page assumes you know roughly what both do and need to decide where your $20, or your $200, should go.

Cursor vs Claude Code: head to head

Read the middle of that table twice. A year ago the row for subagents, hooks, skills and MCP would have split the two. Today both list all four, both have a plan mode, both isolate parallel work in git worktrees, and both ship a CLI with a non-interactive mode. The decision has moved to three things the table still separates: tab completion, model choice and how you are billed.

Claude Code or Cursor: the short verdict

Which one fits how you work
Pick Cursor if
  • You want completions while you type
  • You switch between Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok models
  • You want a free plan to start on
  • You hand tasks to cloud agents from Slack, Linear or your phone
  • Your team wants Bugbot reviewing every pull request
Pick Claude Code if
  • You live in the terminal, or want to keep your current editor
  • You mostly use Claude models and use them heavily
  • You script the agent in CI with claude -p or the Agent SDK
  • You want one setup across terminal, desktop app and web
  • You already pay for Claude Pro or Max

The third answer is both, and it is the common one. Cursor handles the typing; Claude Code handles the long agent runs. The setup section below covers what the two can share.

What does each one cost?

The entry price is identical. Above it, the ladders look different: Cursor has three paid individual tiers, and Claude has Pro and two sizes of Max.

Individual plans, monthly billing
Claude Pro
$20
Cursor Pro

Cursor Pro Plus
$60
Claude Max (from)

The prices matter less than the meters behind them. Cursor gives every paid plan a monthly allowance split into two pools: one for Cursor's own models (Grok 4.7, 4.6 and 4.5, and Composer 2.5) and one for third-party models, which are charged at the model's API price. When the allowance runs out you either upgrade or switch on on-demand usage, billed at the same rates. Cursor's docs do not put a dollar figure on the allowance; they describe who fits inside it. Daily Tab users typically stay within it, daily Agent users typically total $60 to $100 a month, and power users running several agents often pass $200.

Claude Code on a subscription has no dollar pool. Pro and Max give you usage windows, a session limit and a weekly limit shared across models, and Max multiplies Pro's usage by 5 or 20. Run /usage to see where you stand. On an API key you pay per token instead; Anthropic's cost page puts the average across enterprise deployments at about $13 per developer per active day, or $150 to $250 per developer per month. Our Claude pricing guide breaks the plans down further.

Cursor in 2026: strengths and limits

Cursor is an editor first. The agent sits in a side pane, tab completion runs as you type, and a separate Agents Window manages parallel agents across repositories.

  • Tab completion. Pro, Pro Plus and Ultra include unlimited tab completions. Nothing in Claude Code's docs matches it.
  • Model menu. Models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and Cursor's own pool, switchable per task.
  • Cloud Agents. Agents that run in isolated cloud VMs, started from the desktop app, the web, iOS, Slack, a GitHub comment or Linear.
  • A free tier. The Hobby plan needs no card, which makes it the easier tool to try.
  • Bugbot. Automated pull request review on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps, billed by usage.

The limits are mostly about cost predictability. Third-party models burn the allowance at API prices, so an afternoon of agent work on a frontier model moves the meter faster than the plan price suggests, and team plans add a Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens on third-party model requests. Our Cursor guide covers the editor itself in more depth.

Claude Code in 2026: strengths and limits

Claude Code is an agent first. It started in the terminal and grew outward: the same engine now runs in a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin, a desktop app, the browser and the Claude mobile app.

  • One configuration everywhere. CLAUDE.md, hooks, subagents, skills and MCP servers are shared across the local surfaces.
  • Scripting. claude -p, the Agent SDK, GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD. Anthropic's platform docs call the CLI the most complete surface, with scripting and the Agent SDK available only there.
  • Deep control. Hooks bind to more than 30 lifecycle events, and subagents take their own tools, model and permissions. See our guides to Claude Code hooks and Claude Code subagents.
  • Flat subscription pricing. Heavy use is capped by limits rather than billed by the token.

The limits: no inline autocomplete, Claude models only, no free tier, and usage windows that can stop you mid-task on Pro. When that happens you wait for the reset, buy usage credits or move to Max.

Claude in Cursor or Claude Code: what is the difference?

This is the question behind most "Cursor AI vs Claude Code" searches, because both can run the same Claude model. The model is the same; the harness and the bill are not.

Pick Claude in Cursor's model menu and Cursor's agent drives it, with Cursor's system prompt, tools and rules, billed to your Cursor allowance at API price. Run Claude Code and Anthropic's own agent loop drives it, with CLAUDE.md, your hooks and subagents, billed to your Claude plan. You can do the second inside the first: Anthropic's extension docs carry an "Install for Cursor" link, and our Claude Code in VS Code guide walks through the same extension.

Which is cheaper per completed task? Measure your own

Price per month is the wrong unit. What you care about is cost per task that passed your checks, and no vendor page can tell you that, because it depends on your codebase, your prompts and how often a run has to be redone. We are not going to print a number we did not measure. A week of your own work will give you a real one.

A one-week cost-per-task test
  1. 1
    Pick six real tasks

Similar size, from your own backlog. A bug fix, a small feature, a refactor.

  2. 2
    Split them

Three in each tool, on the same model family where you can.

  3. 3
    Define done first

Tests pass and you would merge it. Decide before the run, not after.

  4. 4
    Record the spend

Claude Code: /usage after each task. Cursor: the usage dashboard, both pools.

  5. 5
    Count your time too

Minutes spent steering and reviewing are part of the cost.

  6. 6
    Divide

Spend and minutes per completed task, per tool. Redo it when prices change.

The both-tools setup

Running both costs $40 a month at the entry tiers, and more of the configuration carries over than you might expect, because Cursor reads several Claude Code formats.

WhatKeep it inHow the other tool sees it
Project instructionsAGENTS.mdBoth tools read it
Subagents.claude/agents/Cursor loads it for Claude compatibility; .cursor/agents wins on a name clash
Skills.claude/skills/Cursor loads Claude skill folders too
HooksClaude Code hooks in settings.jsonCursor can load third-party hooks; exit code 2 blocks in both
MCP serversConfigured per toolSet up twice
Set up both in an afternoon
  • Install the Claude Code extension in Cursor, or run claude in its terminal
  • Put shared project instructions in AGENTS.md
  • Keep subagents in .claude/agents so both tools load them
  • Keep skills in .claude/skills for the same reason
  • Give each parallel agent its own git worktree
  • Decide which tool owns commits, so two agents never edit one branch
  • Check both usage meters at the end of the first week

Tools are the easy part of shipping. Our AI SaaS Builder program uses both Claude Code and Cursor inside a full product build, from the first schema to payments.

Alternatives worth a look

If neither fits, the same decision applies to the rest of the field: editor or agent, one vendor or many, allowance or usage windows. Our Windsurf guide covers the other well-known AI editor. Whichever you choose, run the one-week test above before you commit to an annual plan.

Claude Code vs Cursor: FAQ

Is Claude Code better than Cursor?

Neither is better across the board. Going by each vendor's documentation, Cursor is the stronger choice if you want an editor with tab completion and models from several vendors, and Claude Code is the stronger choice if you want Anthropic's agent in the terminal, in CI and on the web on a flat Claude subscription. Their agent features, such as subagents, hooks, skills and MCP, now overlap heavily.

Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor?

Yes. Anthropic's VS Code extension docs include an "Install for Cursor" link, so the Claude Code panel runs inside the Cursor editor, and you can also run the claude CLI in Cursor's integrated terminal. Claude Code then uses your Claude plan or API key, not your Cursor usage. Cursor's tab completion and its own agent keep working alongside it.

Is Cursor or Claude Code cheaper?

Both start at $20 a month on monthly billing, checked October 2026. They bill differently above that. Cursor includes a monthly usage allowance and charges third-party models such as Claude at API prices, with on-demand billing once the allowance is used. Claude Pro and Max give usage windows instead of a dollar pool. Which is cheaper depends on how much agent work you run.

Does Claude Code have autocomplete like Cursor Tab?

No inline autocomplete is listed in Claude Code's documentation. Claude Code works as an agent: you describe a change and it edits files, showing diffs you accept or reject in the VS Code extension. Cursor's paid individual plans include unlimited tab completions. If you want completions while you type and Claude Code for larger tasks, run both in the Cursor editor.

Does Cursor use Claude models?

Yes. Cursor's model list includes Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.1 alongside models from OpenAI, Google and others, checked October 2026. Requests to them draw on Cursor's Other Models pool at the model's API price. Cursor's docs list Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output, the same as Anthropic's own price list.

Can Cursor and Claude Code share the same configuration?

Partly. Cursor's docs say it loads subagents from .claude/agents, skills from .claude/skills and hooks written for Claude Code, and both tools can read an AGENTS.md file for project instructions. MCP servers and Cursor rules are set up separately in each tool. Keep shared material in AGENTS.md and the .claude folder if you run both.

Is there a free version of Cursor or Claude Code?

Cursor has a free Hobby plan with limited Agent requests and no credit card required. Claude Code has no free tier: Anthropic's setup docs say it needs a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console account, and the free Claude plan does not include it. With a Console account you pay per token instead of a subscription.
