To reset the Instagram algorithm, open your profile menu, tap Content preferences and then Reset suggested content. It clears your recommendations in Explore, Reels and Feed, keeps your follows, ads and data, and cannot be undone. It changes what you are shown, not how far your own posts travel, so it will not repair reach; lighter controls like Your Algorithm and Not interested fix most feeds without a full wipe.
How to reset the Instagram algorithm: in the app, go to your profile, tap the menu, tap Content preferences, then Reset suggested content, and confirm. That clears the recommendations you see in Explore, Reels and Feed and lets them rebuild from what you do next. It cannot be undone, it only works in the phone app, and it changes what you are shown, not how your own posts are distributed.
Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages Reset your suggested content, Limit sensitive content and Recommendation eligibility, the reset announcement, the Your Algorithm announcement, Instagram's ranking explainer and Meta's Explore system card. Menu labels move; if one differs on your phone, search "reset" inside Settings.
People search for this with two different problems. Some want a cleaner feed. Others are creators hoping a reset will bring their views back. The first group has a real button. The second group does not, and this page says so plainly, then points at what does work. Both sit inside the wider Instagram growth playbook.
How to reset the Instagram algorithm, step by step
Instagram calls the feature Reset suggested content. It announced it as a test on November 19, 2024, and the Help Center now documents it for iPhone and Android.
- 1Go to your profile
Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
- 2Tap the menu
The three lines in the top right corner.
- 3Tap Content preferences
It sits below the heading What you see.
- 4Tap Reset suggested content
Then tap Next and follow the instructions on screen.
- 5Review who you follow
Optional. You are also shown your ad topics if Instagram shows you ads.
- 6Tap Reset suggested content again
Expected result: Explore, Reels and suggested posts in Feed stop reflecting your old interests.

What the reset does and does not do
The reset is narrower than its name. It clears suggestions. It leaves your account, your connections and your data where they were.
| What | After the reset |
|---|---|
| Recommendations in Explore, Reels and Feed | Cleared. You see content about topics you may not normally see. |
| Accounts you follow | Unchanged. You are offered a review screen, and unfollowing is optional. |
| Ads | Unchanged. You can review your ad topics during the reset. |
| Your data | Not deleted. Meta still uses it to personalize in other ways and to show ads. |
| Undo | None. The reset cannot be reversed. |
| Your own posts and their reach | Not mentioned anywhere on the reset page. |
The wording on the Help Center page is worth reading closely. You reset "to see posts, reels and other content about topics you may not normally see." It "won't change who you follow or the ads you see." And "resetting won't delete your data. We will still use your data to personalize your experience on Instagram in other ways." So this is a restart of recommendations, not a privacy tool and not an account refresh.
What happens after you reset
Your recommendations start broad and narrow again as you use the app. Instagram says suggestions "become more personalized again as you interact with content on Instagram by liking, sharing, or engaging with it." It gives no timeframe.
- 01Reset
Recommendations in Explore, Reels and Feed are cleared.
- 02Broad suggestions
You see topics you may not normally see.
- 03You interact
Likes, shares and other engagement tell Instagram what to keep.
- 04Personalized again
Suggestions narrow around the new behaviour. No published timeline.
That makes the first few sessions the ones to be careful with. The system is rebuilding from a short record, so a late-night scroll through something you do not want more of is a poor first entry.
- Decide on three to five topics you want before you open the app
- Open Your Algorithm and add those topics directly
- Like and share posts on those topics; both are signals Instagram names
- Tap Not interested on anything off-topic instead of scrolling past it
- Add repeat offenders to Hidden Words
- Follow a handful of accounts that post what you want every week
- Keep rage-watching and curiosity taps out of the first sessions
Reset the Instagram feed algorithm without wiping it
Most feeds do not need the full reset. Since December 2025 Instagram has let you see and edit the topics behind your recommendations, which solves the usual complaint, "why am I being shown this?", without throwing away everything else.
| Control | What it does | Where it is | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your Algorithm | Shows the topics shaping your recommendations and lets you add or remove them | Icon at the top of Reels or Explore, or Content preferences | You like most of your feed and want to drop or add a topic |
| Not interested | Hides a post and reduces similar content | Three-dot menu on a suggested post | A few posts are wrong, the rest is fine |
| Interested | Asks for more posts like this one | Three-dot menu on a post in Explore | You found a topic you want more of |
| Hidden Words | Hides suggested posts whose captions contain words, phrases or emojis you list | Offered after you hide a suggested post, and in settings | One subject keeps coming back under different accounts |
| Sensitive Content Control | Sets how much sensitive content appears in recommendations: Less or More | Content preferences, then Sensitive content | Recommendations feel too graphic or too filtered |
| Snooze suggested posts | Pauses suggested posts in Feed for 30 days | From a suggested post in Feed | You want a break from recommendations, not new ones |
| Following and Favorites | Shows only accounts you follow or picked, newest first | The feed switcher at the top of Home | You want no recommendations at all in that session |
Your Algorithm is the one to learn. Instagram describes it as a view of your top interests with an AI-generated summary, where you type topics you want to see more or less of. Open it from the icon in the upper right of Reels or Explore, or through Content preferences. On Explore you can also add or remove interests from the topic pills at the top. Our guide to how the Explore page works covers what those topics feed into.
- Nov 19, 2024Reset announced as a test

Refresh Instagram suggestions: which control fits your problem
Choose by two questions: how much of the feed is wrong, and whether you want to keep the interests you have built up.
Sensitive Content Control is a different axis. It does not change your topics; it changes how much content Instagram considers sensitive appears in recommendations. The Help Center lists where it applies: Explore, Search, Reels, comments, suggested accounts, hashtag pages and recommendations in Feed. Teens under 18 have a separate content setting. If your complaint is "too graphic" or "too filtered", this is the control, and the reset will not touch it.
One boundary to know: the Help Center describes the reset as covering suggested content. Posts from accounts you already follow are a separate matter, and the tools Instagram lists for those are Favorites, the Following view, mute and unfollow. If your complaint is that you never see your friends, a reset is the wrong tool; add them to Favorites.
When a full reset is worth it
Use the full reset when the pattern is wrong, not the details. In our experience that comes down to four situations:
- Your interests changed wholesale. A new job, a move, a hobby you dropped. Removing topics one at a time would take longer than rebuilding.
- Someone else used the account. A partner, a child or a client scrolled for weeks and the recommendations now reflect them.
- The feed turned into something you do not want in your day. You have removed topics and tapped Not interested, and it keeps coming back.
- A teenager wants a fresh start. Instagram introduced the reset for everyone, teens included, and pitched it at exactly this case.
Skip it if you use your feed for work. A creator or marketer whose recommendations are tuned to their niche is looking at a research tool, and the reset deletes it with no way back.
Reset myths: what Instagram does not document
Search this topic and you will find a dozen rituals. Instagram documents one reset and a handful of controls. Everything else is folklore until an official page says otherwise, and none did when we checked in October 2026.
| The ritual | What Instagram's pages say |
|---|---|
| Clearing your search history | It is a separate setting. The reset page does not mention it. |
| Clearing the app cache or reinstalling | Not mentioned. Recommendations are tied to your account, not to the app on one phone. |
| Logging out for 48 hours | Not mentioned. No waiting period appears on any page we checked. |
| Switching between personal and professional | Not mentioned as a reset. It changes your tools, such as the professional dashboard. |
| Mass unfollowing | The reset offers a follow review, but Instagram says the reset itself does not change who you follow. |
| Engaging only with your niche so your posts get pushed | No page says your own viewing changes how your posts are distributed. |
We are not claiming these do nothing. We are saying no official page describes them as resetting recommendations, so do not plan around them. The same caution applies to shadowban fixes that tell you to delete posts or go quiet for a week.
What a reset can and cannot fix about reach
A reset cannot fix reach, because it works on the wrong side of the system. Reset suggested content clears what Instagram recommends to you. Your reach is the sum of what Instagram recommends to everyone else, and their recommendations are built from their activity, not yours.
- Views or reach that fell on your own posts
- A post that broke a recommendation guideline
- An account that is not eligible to be recommended
- Weak hooks, low watch time or few shares
- A profile that does not convert visitors
- An Explore page full of a topic you are finished with
- Reels suggestions that drifted after one binge
- Suggested posts in Feed you never asked for
- A feed that no longer shows what you want to learn from
There is one honest overlap. If you study your niche by watching it, a feed full of unrelated content makes that harder, and a reset or a pass through Your Algorithm tidies it up. That helps your research. It does not send a signal about your posts.
For creators, the documented equivalents of a reset are on the eligibility side. Instagram's recommendation eligibility page says that if an account is not eligible, none of its content is recommended, and that Account Status is where you see it. Its April 30, 2026 originality update adds a rolling window: accounts that mainly post unoriginal content become eligible again when most of their recently posted photos, carousels and reels are original in a 30-day period.
| Situation | What Instagram says | The creator-side reset |
|---|---|---|
| A post broke a recommendation guideline | Account Status shows a sample of the content and which guideline applies | Edit or remove it, or request a review |
| The account mostly reposts other people's work | Accounts that mainly post unoriginal content are not shown where Instagram recommends content | Post original work until most of the last 30 days is original; the window rolls |
| Something in the profile breaks the guidelines | Account Status flags a profile photo or bio | Change it and re-check Account Status |
| Nothing is flagged, reach is still low | Eligibility is not the problem; response is | Work on topic, hook and retention, one change at a time |
If your numbers dropped and you do not know which row you are in, enter them into the free Instagram reach drop diagnoser, which ranks the likely causes and names the metric that confirms each. For an account that never took off rather than one that fell, why your Instagram is not growing runs four checks in order. How ranking treats your posts, signal by signal, is in the Instagram algorithm guide, and it is the subject of the algorithm lessons in our Instagram Ignited program.
One more non-fix: starting a new account to "reset" reach. A new account starts with no followers and no history, and it inherits whatever made the old one stall. If Account Status is clear, the problem is in the content or the profile, and both come with you. Fix one thing on the existing account and compare the next ten posts against the last ten.
Your do-this-week list
- Name the problem. Is it what you see, or how your posts perform? Only the first has a reset.
- If it is what you see, open Your Algorithm and remove topics before you consider the full reset.
- If you reset, follow the first-week checklist above so the rebuild goes where you want.
- If it is your reach, open Account Status first, then run the diagnoser.
- Change one thing and give it ten posts before judging it.
Resetting the Instagram algorithm: FAQ
How do I reset my Instagram algorithm?
In the Instagram app, go to your profile, tap the menu in the top right, tap Content preferences under What you see, then tap Reset suggested content. Tap Next, review the accounts you follow if you want to, and tap Reset suggested content to confirm. Instagram's Help Center says the feature is not available on computers and that the reset cannot be undone.
Can you undo an Instagram algorithm reset?
No. Instagram's Help Center says resetting your suggested content cannot be undone. Your old recommendations do not come back; instead your suggestions become more personalized again as you like, share and interact with content. If you only want to remove some topics, use Your Algorithm or Not interested first, because both leave the rest of your recommendations in place.
Does resetting suggested content delete my data or unfollow anyone?
No. Instagram says the reset will not change who you follow or the ads you see, and that it does not delete your data. Meta still uses your data to personalize your experience in other ways and to show ads. During the reset you are offered a chance to review the accounts you follow, but unfollowing anyone is your choice.
Will resetting the Instagram algorithm fix my reach?
No. The reset changes what Instagram suggests to you. It does not change how your posts are ranked for other people, and nothing on Instagram's reset page says it affects distribution. Reach depends on whether your content is eligible for recommendations, which Account Status shows, and on how the people who see each post respond to it.
How long does Instagram take to learn my interests again after a reset?
Instagram gives no timeframe. Its Help Center says only that suggestions become more personalized again as you interact with content by liking, sharing or engaging with it. The practical consequence is that your first sessions after a reset carry more weight than usual, so use them deliberately: like and share what you want more of, and tap Not interested on the rest.
Can I reset only my Explore page or only Reels?
Instagram documents one reset, and its announcement describes it as clearing recommendations across Explore, Reels and Feed together. There is no separate reset for a single surface. To change one surface without wiping the others, open Your Algorithm from the icon at the top of Reels or Explore and add or remove topics, or use the topic pills at the top of Explore.
Why can I not find Reset suggested content?
The Help Center says the feature is not available on computers, so look in the iPhone or Android app: profile, menu, Content preferences, then Reset suggested content. Instagram announced the reset as a test in November 2024 before rolling it out, so an out-of-date app may not show it. If it is still missing, Your Algorithm and Not interested cover most of the same ground.
Your feed has a reset button. Your reach has a system.
Instagram Ignited, included in All Access, covers the side a reset cannot touch: the 2026 algorithm update, Explore and recommendations, hooks, retention scripting and reading your metrics each week. The other three programs, live coaching and the private community come in the same subscription.
