Instagram Audio Not Available Fix: Why Songs Get Blocked

Instagram audio not available? Why songs are blocked by account type, region or licensing, how to replace muted audio, and a royalty-free routine to avoid it.

Quick answer

Instagram audio shows as not available when the Licensed Music Library is closed to your account type or region, or when licensing deals change. Some business accounts are excluded because the library is for non-commercial use. The fix is to replace muted audio from the reel, switch to Meta's royalty-free Sound Collection or your own original audio, and keep commercial content off licensed tracks.

The Instagram audio not available fix depends on why the song is blocked: if Instagram's licensed music library is closed to your account type or region, switch to Meta's royalty-free Sound Collection or your own audio; if a posted reel was muted, tap Audio unavailable and replace the track. No setting unlocks a song Instagram has not licensed for your account, so the real fix is choosing audio you are allowed to use.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center on problems with audio, access to the licensed music library, replacing muted audio on a reel, what audio you can use in Edits and reel drafts.

Music problems are among the most common Reels support questions, and the answers are scattered across half a dozen help pages. This guide, part of our Instagram Reels guide, pulls them into one rights matrix, a step-by-step fix, and a workflow that keeps your reels playable wherever they are watched.

Why Instagram music is not available

Instagram's Help Center lists the reasons you might be unable to access certain music:

  • Account type. The song is in the Licensed Music Library, but "the library isn't available for your account type."
  • Country or region. The library, or a specific track, is not available where you are.
  • Changed agreements. "Our licensing agreements with rights holders have changed."

The account-type reason surprises most people. Instagram explains that the music in its licensed library "is intended for personal, non-commercial use," and: "To make sure that the music in our licensed library is not used for commercial purposes, certain business accounts and certain types of posts do not have access to the library. Licensed music may also not be available in certain countries or regions." Instagram does not publish the exact list of affected accounts or post types, so two business accounts may see different results.

Instagram audio not available: the fix, step by step

Work through these in order. Each step tells you what you should see if it worked.

Fix unavailable audio
  1. 1
    Update the Instagram app

Rules out a display bug. Expected result: the audio browser loads normally.

  2. 2
Check whether the track is missing or the library is

Search for a very popular song. If nothing licensed appears, the library is closed to your account or region.

  3. 3
    Check your account type

Look in your settings. Business accounts are the type Instagram names as restricted.

  4. 4
    Switch to Sound Collection

Tap Audio in the Reels camera and browse royalty-free tracks. Expected result: tracks that play and stay.

  5. 5
    Or use original audio

Record a voiceover, sound from the scene, or music you have the rights to.

  6. 6
Replace muted audio on posted reels

Open the reel, tap Audio unavailable, then Replace audio.

A note on account type. Instagram only says that certain business accounts lack access; it does not say a creator account restores it, and switching type changes which professional tools you get. Do not switch purely for one song. If the song matters for a brand post, it is probably a song you should not be using on that post anyway, given the library is meant for non-commercial use.

How to replace muted audio on a reel

If a reel you already posted now shows Audio unavailable, Instagram lets you swap the track without deleting the reel. Per the Help Center, you can only replace audio on a reel that has been muted:

  1. Open the Instagram app on your phone and find the reel with the muted audio.
  2. Tap Audio unavailable.
  3. Tap Replace audio, then tap Replace audio again.
  4. Tap a track, then choose the part of the track you want.
  5. Tap Done, then Done again. Expected result: the reel plays with the new track.

Instagram says your reel "can still be viewed even if audio tracks have been muted," so the reel is not removed, just silent. The same replace flow exists for muted audio on photo posts with music. If the reel relied on a voiceover mixed under the song, rebuild it with the voiceover on its own track so a future mute does not take your words with it.

This is the most frustrating version: a sound is all over your feed, you tap Use audio, and it will not attach, or it attaches and is muted later. Three explanations fit what Instagram says:

  • Different access. The people using it are personal accounts, or in a region where the track is licensed. Your business account or region is not.
  • Changing licences. Agreements with rights holders change, and Instagram mutes audio when they do. A trend can outlive the licence that started it.
  • Rights holder action. The rights holder can block content that contains their work, which mutes it on reels that already used it.

Do not build a reel whose whole point depends on a licensed sound if your account is commercial. Instagram does say audio helps: its February 2025 creator update recommends incorporating audio to "grab attention with new audiences." It does not say the audio has to be a licensed hit. A royalty-free track or a strong voiceover counts.

The royalty-free workflow that keeps reels playable

Meta's Sound Collection is the safe default for anything commercial. Instagram describes it as "over 14,000 songs and sounds which are entirely royalty free and safe to use in Reels and Instagram Stories," usable "for commercial purposes such as ads" (checked October 2026). You reach it from the Audio button in the Reels camera.

Audio choice for every reel
  1. 01
    Is the reel commercial?

Selling, promoting a brand, or a paid partnership.

  2. 02
Yes: Sound Collection or original audio

Cleared for commercial use, or yours.

  3. 03
No: licensed library is an option

If it is available to your account and region.

  4. 04
Keep voice on its own layer

So a muted song does not silence your message.

  5. 05
    Add music inside Instagram

Library music is not kept in downloads or long Edits exports.

  6. 06
    Check after posting

Replace audio if it is ever muted.

Before you post a reel with music
  • Is this reel promoting a business, product or paid deal?
  • If yes, is the track from Sound Collection or your own?
  • Does the track play in the editor without a warning?
  • Is your voiceover on its own track, not baked into the song?
  • Did you add library music inside Instagram, not in another app?
  • Do on-screen text and captions carry the message if the audio is ever muted?

That last check matters more than it looks. Some people watch with the sound off, and a reel whose message survives without audio also survives a mute. Our guide to Reels text overlays shows how to put the hook on screen.

Can't hear the audio on someone else's reel?

Sometimes the problem is on the viewing side. Instagram's Help Center lists these reasons you might not hear audio on another person's content:

  • The audio is not available in your country or region.
  • The track was muted because the creator did not have access to the audio's source.
  • The specific track has been taken down.
  • The artist or label is having technical issues.
  • Licensing agreements with rights holders have changed.
  • The rights holder blocked the content because it contains content they own.

None of these can be fixed from your phone. If you wanted to use that sound, it is a strong hint that it will not be available to you either. Pick a different track rather than spending time trying to recreate one you cannot license.

Edits, downloads and missing music

Two related limits catch people when audio seems to vanish outside Instagram. When you download a reel or draft, Instagram says it "won't save any music you added from the Instagram music library." And in the Edits app, "any licensed audio that is over 60 seconds in your video won't be included in your download." In both cases the fix is to add the track again inside Instagram before posting.

Edits also explains the opposite case: if Instagram detects that audio you recorded or uploaded uses licensed music, it will "automatically change attribution from Original Audio to the artist and song title," and add your reel to that song's audio page. If it picked the wrong track, tap the audio on your reel and choose Remove From Audio Page to restore the Original Audio label.

If your reel plays fine but nobody is watching it, the problem is distribution, not rights. Start with our checklist on why Reels stop getting views, then test new hooks safely with trial reels. Instagram audio not available: FAQ

Why does Instagram say audio not available?

Instagram's Help Center gives two main reasons: the song is in the Licensed Music Library but the library is not available for your account type or in your country or region, or Instagram's licensing agreements with rights holders have changed. On someone else's reel, the track may also have been taken down, or the rights holder may have blocked it. Checked October 2026.

Why can't my business account use popular songs?

Instagram says the music in its licensed library is intended for personal, non-commercial use, so certain business accounts and certain types of posts do not have access to it. Instagram does not publish a full list of which business accounts are affected. Those accounts can use Meta's Sound Collection, which Instagram describes as royalty-free and usable for commercial purposes.

How do I fix muted audio on my reel?

Open the reel with the muted track in the Instagram app and tap Audio unavailable. Tap Replace audio, then Replace audio again, choose a track and the part you want, and tap Done. Instagram only lets you replace audio on a reel that has been muted, and the reel itself stays viewable even while its audio is muted.

Why is trending audio unavailable on my reel but not on others?

Access is decided per account and per region. A creator in another country, or with a personal account, may have that track while your business account or region does not. Instagram also says licensing agreements change over time, so a sound can disappear from the library after a reel using it went viral. You cannot unlock it from your side.

What is the Meta Sound Collection?

It is Meta's royalty-free library. Instagram's Help Center describes it as over 14,000 songs and sounds that are safe to use in Reels and Stories and can be used for commercial purposes such as ads, checked October 2026. You reach it by tapping Audio in the Reels camera or by using the music sticker in Stories.

Will using my own audio avoid the problem?

Original audio you record yourself is not part of the licensed library, so account-type limits do not apply to it. If you upload copyrighted music as original audio, though, Instagram says it may detect it and change the attribution to the artist and song, and the rights holder can still block or mute content that contains their work.
