The Instagram growth mistakes that cost the most reach are the four that take a whole account out of recommendations: buying followers, reposting other people's content, ignoring Account Status flags and using follow/unfollow apps. Eleven smaller mistakes follow, ranked by what Instagram says each one costs. Every item comes with the insight number that shows whether you are making it.

The Instagram growth mistakes that cost the most reach are the four that take your whole account out of recommendations: buying followers, reposting other people's content, ignoring Account Status flags and using follow/unfollow apps. Eleven smaller ones sit below them, ranked here by what Instagram says each one costs, with the insight number that shows whether you are making it.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines, creator FAQ, April 2026 originality update, engaging content guidance and Ranking Explained, the Help Center pages on recommendation eligibility, apps that offer likes and followers, hashtags and reel insights, and Meta's Spam policy.

Nobody outside Instagram can put a percentage on any of these, so the ranking uses the one kind of public evidence there is: the consequence Instagram has written down. This is the prevention list inside our Instagram growth playbook. If the account has already stalled, the diagnostic in why your Instagram is not growing is the faster route.

The 15 Instagram growth mistakes, ranked by reach cost

How the 15 are ranked
  1. 01
    Tier 1: the whole account

Mistakes 1 to 4. Instagram can stop recommending everything you post.

  2. 02
    Tier 2: one post

Mistakes 5 to 9. Instagram says it limits or will not recommend that post.

  3. 03
    Tier 3: weak signals

Mistakes 10 to 14. No penalty; the post earns less distribution.

  4. 04
    Tier 4: wasted reach

Mistake 15. The reach was on its way and you cut it off.

The biggest Instagram mistakes in 2026: 1 to 4, the account-wide ones

These four are first because of one sentence in the Help Center: if an account is not eligible to be recommended, "none of your content will be recommended," however good the next post is.

  • 1. Buying followers, likes or views. Meta's Spam policy bans buying engagement, and the Recommendations Guidelines say Instagram tries not to recommend accounts that "repeatedly engaged in misleading practices to build followings, such as purchasing ‘likes’." Fix: stop, then remove the fake accounts from your follower list. The full cost is in what happens when you buy Instagram followers.
  • 2. Posting mostly other people's content. Since April 30, 2026, accounts that primarily post unoriginal photos or carousels, as well as reels, "will no longer be shown in places where we recommend content." A border, a watermark, subtitles or a credit in the caption does not make a repost original. Fix: Instagram restores eligibility when most of your recent posts are original in a rolling 30-day period.
  • 3. Leaving Account Status flags unresolved. Instagram says that if an account repeatedly posts content against its guidelines, "none of their posts will be eligible for recommendation for a period of time." A flagged bio or profile photo counts too. Fix: open Account Status, then edit, remove or request a review.
  • 4. Follow/unfollow and auto-engagement apps. The Help Center says accounts that keep using them may find parts of the account limited, and that an account using one to gain likes or followers "may be disabled or terminated." Fix: remove the app, change your password and do the outreach by hand, as laid out in how to grow Instagram organically.
Why originality sits at number 2
75%
of recommendations in the US now come from original posts, according to Instagram
  • The rule covered reels from 2024 and was extended to photos and carousels in 2026
  • Followers still see reposted content; recommendations to strangers are what stop

Mistakes 5 to 9: the ones that limit a single post

These cost one post at a time. The tell is the same for all five: one post far below your own recent views while the others hold.

  • 5. Watermarked clips from other apps. Instagram's creator FAQ: "The 3rd party watermark on your reel may be impacting its reach." Fix: upload the original file.
  • 6. Reels longer than three minutes. "We recommend videos to unconnected audiences that are 3 minutes or less." Fix: cut it, or accept that only followers will see it.
  • 7. Engagement bait and giveaway posts. Instagram says it "will reduce visibility on any piece of content that's using engagement bait," and its FAQ lists clickbait and posts promoting a contest or giveaway among content it avoids recommending. A plain request to share is fine. A trick to make people tap is not.
  • 8. Pods and comment swaps. The guidelines name "coordinated comment networks intended to artificially drive engagement and distribution." Fix: leave the group; our guide to engagement pods explains what they damage.
  • 9. Irrelevant or stuffed hashtags. A post takes up to 5 hashtags, and the FAQ warns that with irrelevant ones "engagement and consequently distribution may suffer." Fix: five tags on the real topic. The free hashtag checker counts them for you.

The Instagram mistakes killing growth quietly: 10 to 14

Nothing here is punished. Instagram says one of the most important things it considers for distribution is "how much engagement per viewer the content has received," and each of these lowers that number.

  • 10. A slow first three seconds. Instagram's advice is to make the first 3 seconds engaging "so that people don't move on." View Rate shows the share who stayed. Fix: open on the point; the hooks guide has 120 openers.
  • 11. Low-resolution uploads. "Video quality matters. Upload the highest resolution possible." Fix: export once, at the right settings; see Reels export settings.
  • 12. Posts only followers understand. A reel meant for new people "should make sense to those who may not know you." Fix: no inside references, and say who the post is for in the first line.
  • 13. Ignoring comments in the first week. Instagram suggests you "like or authentically reply to comments on your reel within the first 7 days," which "can help your content get more reach." Fix: a twenty-minute reply window after each post.
  • 14. Posting in bursts, then silence. Instagram says the creators with the greatest net follower growth post, on average, 10 or more reels a month. Fix: a pace you can hold; the first 90 days are mapped in how to grow Instagram from zero.

Avoiding mistakes protects the reach you have. Earning more of it is a separate skill, and Instagram Ignited teaches it through lessons on hooks, scripting for retention, the psychology of shares and analysing your metrics.

Mistake 15: deleting posts after a slow start

Instagram has published nothing that says deleting a post lowers reach on the rest of your account. The cost is simpler: the post stops collecting views it was still due.

Which tier are you in? Two numbers tell you

Take your last ten reels and look at views and follows. The combination points at a tier before you open a single setting.

Views and follows on your last ten reels
Steady follows
One or two posts are being limited. Check tier 2 on the weak ones.
Nothing to fix. Repeat the format.
Few follows
Open Account Status first. This is where tier 1 shows up.
People watch and leave. Tier 3: the context a stranger needs is missing.
Views below your norm

To turn those reads into causes, the free reach drop diagnoser takes your insight numbers and returns a ranked list.

The ten-minute audit

Run it in tier order
  • Open Account Status and read Limits to your reach
  • Remove any app that follows, likes or comments for you, then change your password
  • Count the reposts in your last 30 days of posts; original posts should be the majority
  • Check the last ten reels for watermarks and anything over three minutes
  • Delete the giveaway-for-follows caption you were about to reuse
  • Count your hashtags: five at most, all on the topic
  • Read View Rate and average watch time on your three weakest reels
  • Reply to every comment from the last seven days
  • Count the posts you shared in each of the last three months
  • Leave the post you wanted to delete alone until day seven

Instagram growth mistakes: FAQ

What are the biggest Instagram growth mistakes in 2026?

The four that affect the whole account: buying followers or likes, posting mostly other people's content, leaving Account Status flags unresolved and using follow/unfollow apps. Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines and Help Center say each can stop an account being recommended to non-followers, or get it limited or disabled. Every other mistake costs one post at a time. These four cost all of them.

Which Instagram mistakes are killing my growth without me noticing?

Usually the quiet ones in the third tier: a slow first three seconds, low-resolution uploads, posts only existing followers understand, unanswered comments and posting in bursts. None of them triggers a warning. They show up as a low View Rate, a short average watch time and few follows per reel. Check those three numbers on your last ten reels before you blame the algorithm.

Does deleting Instagram posts hurt your reach?

Instagram has published nothing that says deleting a post lowers reach on your other posts. The cost is practical. Its creator FAQ says followers are typically the first to see a reel and that it can take time for the full potential audience to see it, so a post deleted on day one never reaches the non-followers it might have. Judge a post after a week, not an evening.

How many hashtags should I use on Instagram in 2026?

Up to five. Instagram's Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and that a comment with more than 5 will not post. Its creator FAQ adds that irrelevant hashtags can hurt, because showing a post to people who are not interested lowers engagement and, with it, distribution. Spend the five on the actual topic of the post.

How do I know if a mistake has limited my Instagram account?

Open Account Status: Settings, then More info and support, then Account Status and Limits to your reach. On a professional account it shows whether your content can be recommended to non-followers and which posts or profile details broke a guideline, with options to edit, remove or request a review. Instagram says that when an account is not eligible, none of its content is recommended.

Can an account recover after reposting content or buying followers?

For reposting, yes, and Instagram gives the rule: an account becomes eligible for recommendations again when most of its recently posted photos, carousels and reels are original in a rolling 30-day period. For bought followers Instagram publishes no timeline. Stop, remove the fake accounts from your follower list, check Account Status and let real engagement rebuild the ratio of people who respond.
