Runway Gen 4 is Runway's model family for images and video, with Gen-4 References for keeping a character consistent from up to three reference images. Plans start at $15 a month (625 credits), which Runway says buys about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 or 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. For a persona, build a reference, generate stills, then animate the best ones.
Runway Gen 4 is Runway's family of image and video models, and for creators its standout feature is Gen-4 References, which keeps a character consistent across new images from as little as one reference image. Plans start at $15 a month for 625 credits, which Runway says covers about 52 seconds of its newer Gen-4.5 video or 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. The efficient workflow is to lock the character in stills first, then spend video credits only on shots you have already approved.
Checked October 2026 against Runway's help articles on Gen-4 Image References and using reference media, its pricing page and its developer API pricing. Plans and models change often.

Runway Gen 4: the models that matter for creators
| Model or feature | What it does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Gen-4 References | Consistent characters, objects and styles from up to 3 images | Building the persona and key shots |
| Gen-4 Image | Image generation | Stills, thumbnails, start frames |
| Gen-4 Turbo | Faster, lower-cost video | Drafts and volume |
| Gen-4.5 | Newer video model, higher credit cost | Final hero shots |
Runway now offers several models in the same interface, including newer ones than Gen-4. The practical split for creators is simple: References and Gen-4 Image to design and lock a character, a lower-cost video model for drafts, and the higher-end model for the shots that will actually be posted.
Runway Gen-4 References: one character, many shots
Runway says Gen-4 References takes one or more images and creates new ones using characteristics, styles, characters or objects from those references. It describes References as strong at keeping characters consistent across different lighting, locations and treatments from a single image. You can select up to three active references per generation and tag references to reuse them later.
- Character identity from one image
- Prompt describes the changes
- Less variation, simpler control
- Good for new outfits and scenes
- Combine character, setting and style
- Precise control of specific elements
- More variation in results
- Good for complex compositions
Runway's help center recommends a clean, neutral character image as the starting reference, describing it as a blank canvas that makes transformation easier, though stylised inputs can work too. For complex changes, it suggests iterating elements one at a time and using each result as a new reference. In newer models, you can also type @ in the prompt to insert uploaded or saved references by name.
A persona workflow from reference to video
- 1Create the base character image
Neutral pose, even light, plain background. Tag it as a reference.
- 2Generate key stills with References
New outfits, locations and angles, all from the same reference.
- 3Approve the stills
Check face, hair and proportions match before spending video credits.
- 4Draft motion with a cheaper model
Test camera moves and actions on approved stills.
- 5Render finals with the higher-end model
Only for shots that passed the draft.
The order saves credits. Images cost less than video, and fixing a character drift in a still takes one regeneration, while discovering it after a video render wastes seconds of credits. Environments and b-roll from a reference
References are not only for characters. Runway's help center says a reference image can also create consistent environments or b-roll by prompting for different angles, focal points and objects, which helps establish a cohesive setting while keeping the atmosphere of the original. For a persona channel, that means you can build a small library of the character's regular places, such as an apartment, a studio or a favourite cafe, and reuse them across posts.
- Establishing shot: a wide view of the location from your reference.
- Detail shots: objects from the same scene, such as a desk, a coffee cup or a window view.
- Angles: the same room from a new direction, keeping lighting and style.
- Character in scene: combine the character reference with the environment reference.
Prompting tips from Runway's guidance
Runway's help center describes two ways to work with references, and the choice changes how you write the prompt.
- Single reference: the reference holds the identity, and the prompt describes everything that changes: outfit, location, lighting, action.
- Multiple references: each reference controls an element, and the prompt explains how they combine. Expect more variation and generate a few options.
- Separate pathways: for a big transformation, change one element at a time and feed each result back in as a new reference, which Runway says gives more precision.
- Tagged references: tag your persona and recurring locations so you can call them up quickly in future sessions.
Keep a short prompt library for your persona: the base description, recurring locations, and lighting styles you like. Reusing the same phrasing across generations is one of the simplest ways to keep a series looking consistent.

In other words, Gen-4.5 costs roughly twice as many credits per second as Gen-4 Turbo in the app. Developers using the API pay separately: Runway's developer docs list API credits at $0.01 each, with gen4.5 at 12 credits per second and gen4_turbo at 5 credits per second. The developer pricing page also lists several third-party models available through Runway, each with its own per-second rate.
Consent and labelling
A consistent AI character is powerful, which is why the usual rules matter. Build personas that are fictional or based on people who have given clear consent, and do not create references from photos of real people without permission. Platforms also have labelling rules: TikTok says it requires creators to label AI-generated content that contains realistic images, audio and video, and Meta requires people to use its AI-disclosure tool for photorealistic video that was digitally created or altered. Saying in the bio that an account is an AI persona keeps things clear for followers.
Runway AI review: strengths and limits
This is a feature and pricing review based on Runway's published documentation, not a hands-on benchmark. On paper, Runway's strengths for creators are References for character consistency, several models in one place, and clear per-plan credit equivalents. The limits are cost per second at the top end, and the general caveat of all video models: results vary between generations, so budget for retries.
- Estimate the seconds of finished video you need each month
- Decide which shots need the top model and which do not
- Prepare a clean reference image of your character
- Check the current pricing page; credits and models change
- Plan to label realistic AI video where platforms require it

Runway Gen 4: FAQ
What is Runway Gen-4?
Gen-4 is Runway's family of image and video generation models. It includes Gen-4 Turbo for video, Gen-4 Image, and Gen-4 References, which uses one or more reference images to keep characters, objects or styles consistent. Runway also offers a newer Gen-4.5 video model. Checked October 2026 on Runway's help center and pricing page.
How much does Runway cost?
Runway's pricing page lists Standard at $15 a month, or $12 billed yearly, with 625 credits a month; Pro at $35 a month, or $28 billed yearly, with 2,250 credits a month; and Max at $76 a month billed yearly. Runway says 625 credits equal about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 or 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. Checked October 2026.
How do Gen-4 References keep a character consistent?
Runway says Gen-4 References takes one or several images and creates new images using characteristics, styles, characters or objects from them, and that it is strong at consistent characters across lighting, locations and treatments from a single reference. You can use up to three references per generation and tag them to reuse later.
How many references can I use in Runway?
Runway's help center says you can select up to three active references for a single Gen-4 References generation. A single reference relies on your prompt to describe changes; multiple references give more control over specific elements, with more variation in results.
Is Runway Gen-4.5 more expensive than Gen-4 Turbo?
Yes, per second. Runway's plan page says 625 credits buy about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 or 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. On the developer API, Runway lists gen4.5 at 12 credits per second and gen4_turbo at 5 credits per second, with API credits at $0.01 each.
Can I use Runway for an AI influencer?
Yes, as long as the character is fictional or you have the consent of the person it resembles, and you follow platform rules on labelling realistic AI content. A common workflow is to generate a consistent reference image of the persona, then use it as a reference for new images and as a start frame for video.
