Salon Instagram hashtags work best as small local sets built per service: the technique, the city or neighbourhood, and the hair type or result. Use up to five per post, change them to match the service shown, and pair them with a location tag.
Salon Instagram hashtags are short sets of up to five tags that name the service in a post, the place a client can book it and the result, so Instagram can show the post to nearby people looking for that service. The strongest sets are local and specific, and they change with every post.
Limits checked in October 2026: Reels and feed posts allow up to five hashtags, per Instagram's @creators announcement. The older Help Center page on hashtags may still mention a higher number.
Most salon hashtag lists online are thirty generic tags copied under every post. That habit is out of date twice over: Instagram now caps posts at five, and generic tags put a local salon next to millions of posts from people who will never sit in its chair. This page gives you sets by service and by city size instead, plus the split between what the salon account and a stylist account should tag. It belongs to our Instagram growth by niche hub, and the full salon playbook is in our guide to Instagram for hair salons.
How salon Instagram hashtags work in 2026
A hashtag is a label. It tells Instagram what the post is about and lets people who search or follow that tag find it. For a salon, the useful labels answer three questions a would-be client has: what is this service, where can I get it, and will it suit my hair.
- 1Service tag
The exact technique in the post: balayage, knotless braids, gel nails, skin fade.
- 2Local tag
Your city or neighbourhood joined to salon, hair, nails or barber.
- 3Result or hair-type tag
Curly hair, grey blending, natural hair, short nails: who this is for.
- 4Branded tag
Your salon name plus hair or beauty, used on every post from the team.
- 5Optional fifth
A season or trend tag only if it is true of the post. Otherwise stop at four.
Hashtags are not working alone. Instagram also reads the caption, any text on screen in a Reel and the location tag. Content with a location may appear on that location's page (Instagram Help Center, checked October 2026), which for a salon is often more useful than any tag. Our hashtag strategy guide covers how the five-tag era changed the rules for every account.
Hair salon hashtags by service and city size
Use the table as a pattern, not a copy-paste list. Swap in your own city, neighbourhood and the exact name clients use for the service. The right column shows how local to go depending on where you are.
| Service | What to tag | How local to go |
|---|---|---|
| Balayage and colour | Technique (balayage, colour correction), result (lived-in blonde), city + colourist | Neighbourhood + balayage in a big city; city + balayage in a mid-size one |
| Braids and protective styles | Style name (knotless, box, cornrows), hair type, city + braider | City + braider works almost everywhere; add the area in large cities |
| Curly and textured cuts | Cut method, curl type, city + curly hair | Region + curly salon in small towns where few salons specialise |
| Silk press and blowouts | Service name, result (healthy hair, natural hair), city + stylist | City + silk press; the neighbourhood if the city has many specialists |
| Nails | Service (gel, BIAB, nail art), style or season, city + nails | City + nail salon; town + nails in smaller places |
| Brows and lashes | Service (lamination, lash lift, extensions), city + brows or lashes | City + service; add the area in large cities |
| Barber-adjacent cuts | Cut name (skin fade, taper, crop), city + barber or men's hair | Neighbourhood + barber in big cities; town + barber elsewhere |
City size matters because of competition. In a large city, a city-wide tag gathers posts from hundreds of salons, so the neighbourhood is where you stand out. In a mid-size city, the city name is usually specific enough. In a small town there may be few posts on the town tag, so pair it with the wider region to catch people willing to travel for a specialist.
Here is an illustrative set for a balayage post from a salon in a large city, with placeholders for the names: #[neighbourhood]balayage, #[city]colourist, #livedinblonde, #[salonname]hair. Four tags, every one of them true of the post.
Beauty salon hashtags on Instagram: one set per service
Multi-service beauty salons have the biggest temptation to paste every service into every post. Resist it. A lash lift Reel tagged with nails and brows tells Instagram the post is about everything, which means it is clearly about nothing.
- Same tags under nails, lashes and hair
- Mostly broad tags like beauty and salon
- Copied from another salon or a generator
- Ignores the city
- Tags change with the service shown
- Service, place and result in every set
- Written for the clients you want
- City or neighbourhood in every set
Keep a note on your phone with one ready-made set per service. When you post, copy the set for that service and adjust the result tag. That keeps it to seconds per post without falling back on a generic list.
Stylist tags vs salon tags: who uses what
When stylists post their own work, the salon and the stylist both want credit. Split the tags so each account gets what it needs:
- Salon account: service tag, local tag, branded tag, and the salon location on every post.
- Stylist account: service tag, their speciality or hair-type tag, the salon's branded tag and location while they work there.
- Both: tag each other in the post, or publish it as a collab, so neither audience misses it.
This split also protects both sides when someone moves on: the salon keeps its branded tag and location history, and the stylist keeps the speciality tags built around their name.
Hashtags are not keywords or location tags
Salons often mix up three different labels. They do overlapping jobs, and you need all three.
- Up to five per post or Reel
- Clickable, followable and searchable
- Best for service and technique
- You choose the words
- Location: one place, from public Facebook location pages
- Location: may surface the post on that place's page
- Keywords: plain words in caption and on-screen text
- Keywords: help search understand the post
Instagram only lets you tag places that exist as public Facebook location pages and you cannot create a new location inside Instagram (checked October 2026), so set your salon's page up once and tag it every time.
Check before you post
- Five tags or fewer, each true of this post
- The service tag matches the service clients search for
- A city or neighbourhood tag is in the set
- The salon location is tagged
- The branded tag is spelled the same as on every other post
- Each tag checked for odd or unrelated content before first use
Open each new tag before you use it for the first time and look at the top posts. If they are unrelated, spammy or restricted, drop the tag. Then paste the caption into our free Instagram hashtag checker, which counts the set against the five-tag limit and flags generic filler tags.
Tags are the last five seconds of a post. If you want the content and booking system underneath them, our Instagram Ignited program teaches positioning, Reels and DM conversion step by step.

Salon Instagram hashtags: FAQ
What are the best hashtags for a hair salon on Instagram?
The best ones name the service and the place: a tag for the technique you showed (balayage, silk press, curly cut), a tag pairing your city or neighbourhood with salon or hair, and one tag for the hair type or result. Specific local tags reach people who can actually book, while broad tags like hair or beauty bury a local salon among far bigger accounts.
How many hashtags should a salon use on Instagram?
Up to five per post or Reel. Instagram's @creators account announced in December 2025 that Reels and feed posts allow up to five hashtags, and that a few relevant tags tend to work better than many. Older Help Center pages may still mention a higher limit. Treat five as the ceiling and use fewer if you cannot find five that truly describe the post.
Should beauty salons and hair salons use different hashtags?
Yes, because the services differ. A hair salon tags cuts, colour and styling techniques, while a beauty salon that offers nails, brows, lashes or skin treatments tags each of those services separately. A multi-service salon should change its set per post to match the service shown, not paste one list of every service under everything it shares.
Do hashtags still help salons get found on Instagram?
They help Instagram understand what a post is about, which matters for search and for showing the post to people interested in that service. For a local business they are one signal among several. The location tag, a clear caption naming the service and the city, and on-screen text in Reels all do similar work, so use them together rather than relying on tags alone.
Should a stylist use the salon's hashtags?
A stylist should use the salon's branded tag and location when posting work done there, so clients can find the salon, plus tags for their own speciality. When a stylist moves on, their personal speciality tags move with them, while the salon keeps its branded tag and location. Agree on the branded tag in advance so everyone spells it the same way.
Can a salon create its own hashtag?
Yes. Any tag you type becomes searchable once posts use it. A short branded tag, such as the salon name plus hair, helps clients find every post from the team in one place and gives them something to use when they share their new look. Check the spelling is unambiguous and that nobody else already uses it for something unrelated before printing it anywhere.
