Cursor vs Windsurf: Cursor against Devin Desktop

If you searched for Cursor vs Windsurf, both sides have changed hands. Cognition, which agreed to buy Windsurf in July 2025, renamed the editor Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026, and windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai. SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor on 14 August 2026. The short answer

Both charge $200 a month for the top individual plan and both bill third-party models at each model's API price, so the plan price does not settle this. Cursor is the safer default for most people: its privacy switch works on every plan, and its pricing page lists plans at $8, $30 and $100 below the top one. Devin Desktop is the better buy if you want OpenAI's GPT-6 models or already pay for ChatGPT.

Choose Cursor if

  • You need your code kept out of model training on any plan. Privacy Mode works on free and paid accounts; Cognition trains by default and offers its opt-out on paid plans.
  • You will outgrow an entry plan but not need $200. Cursor lists Premium at $30 and Super at $100; Devin Desktop has no plan between Pro at $20 and Max at $200.
  • Your team needs single sign-on. Cursor Teams lists SAML/OIDC SSO from $30 per user a month; at Cognition it is Enterprise only.

Choose Devin Desktop if

  • You want OpenAI's GPT-6 models. Devin Desktop lists GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna; Cursor's model page stops at GPT-5.6.
  • You already pay for ChatGPT Go, Plus or Pro. Linked to a paid Devin plan, it pays for GPT requests in place of your quota.
  • You run agents from several vendors. Codex CLI, Claude Agent and OpenCode run beside Devin Local on Pro, Max and Teams.

  • A privacy switch on every plan

    Privacy Mode is available on free and paid Cursor accounts. With it on, Cursor does not train on your code and holds zero data retention agreements with its model providers. Cognition trains by default and describes its opt-out for paid plans. 171632

  • A separate allowance for its own models

    Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5 draw from a Cursor Models pool that Cursor says carries significantly more included usage. It is tracked apart from third-party models, so routine work leaves the Claude and GPT allowance alone. 28

  • Steps between the entry plan and $200

    Cursor's pricing page lists Premium at $30 and Super at $100 between Plus at $8 and Ultra at $200. Devin Desktop goes from Pro at $20 straight to Max at $200. 124

    Devin Desktop's model list includes GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Cursor's model page lists GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna as its newest OpenAI models. 272

  • A ChatGPT plan can pay for GPT usage

    On Pro, Max and Teams you can link a ChatGPT Go, Plus or Pro subscription. GPT requests then bill to that plan and do not count against the Devin quota, apart from fast and priority variants. 31

  • A fixed price for automatic routing

    Adaptive charges $0.50 input and $2.00 output per million tokens whichever model it picks. Cursor's Auto bills each request at the list price of the model it was routed to. 2813

    Privacy Mode is a switch under Settings, General on every Cursor plan, and team admins can lock it on. In Devin Desktop training use is the default, and the opt-out is offered on paid plans. 151732

    Cursor says daily agent users typically reach $60 to $100 a month in total usage and lists Super at $100, with 15x the usage of Plus. On Devin Desktop the next plan after Pro is Max at $200, so the middle ground is paid as extra usage at API prices. 212429

What it costs

Monthly list prices in US dollars from each vendor's own pages; Cursor's exclude tax. Cursor's plan names and prices are the ones on its pricing page, which listed a different line-up from its docs and help centre on 13 October 2026. Model prices are per million tokens. Neither pricing page states the size of an individual plan's allowance, so the model prices are what tell you how far a plan goes.

Questions people ask

Is Windsurf still a separate product?

No. Windsurf became Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026, and Cognition describes it as the same IDE under the Devin brand. windsurf.com redirects to devin.ai, the app is called Devin, and existing .windsurf rules and settings carry over. Plans and prices did not change at the rename. Cascade was removed on 8 September 2026 and Devin Local took its place. 262538

How much do Cursor and Devin Desktop cost?

Both have a free plan. Cursor's pricing page lists Plus at $8 a month, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200, with Teams from $30 a user. Devin Desktop lists Pro at $20 and Max at $200, and a team seat at $40 a month with an $80 minimum. On 13 October 2026 Cursor's help centre still listed Pro at $20, Pro+ at $60 and team seats at $40 and $120. Subscribers from the old Windsurf plans keep $15 a month for Pro and $30 a seat for Teams. 16243029

What does a request or a credit buy in Cursor and Windsurf?

Neither is sold on current plans: both bill by tokens. Cursor's request-based plans, where one message counted as one request, are legacy and move to usage pricing at renewal. Windsurf's prompt credits were replaced in March 2026 by a daily and weekly quota, and leftover add-on credits were converted at $0.04 each. As a guide, a request that reads 100,000 tokens and writes 5,000 costs $0.50 on Claude Opus 5.5 in either editor before caching, and about 6 cents on standard Composer 2.5. 1422927

Which models are included with Cursor and Devin Desktop?

The maker's own models and the current Claude and Gemini models, on Devin Desktop's paid plans and on Cursor from Premium up. Cursor's $8 Plus plan runs Grok models only, and Cursor bills third-party models separately at API list price. Cursor's own are Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5; its free plan has a smaller set. Devin Desktop's own are the SWE family, led by SWE-2, and Pro gives full model availability, including GPT-6 Astra and Grok 4.7. Models Cognition marks as free do not count against the quota. 42272429

Do Cursor and Devin Desktop train on my code?

Cursor does not when Privacy Mode is on, and Devin Desktop does not once a paid plan has opted out. Privacy Mode is available on free and paid Cursor accounts; with it off, Cursor may store code and prompts and train on them. Cognition may train on your data by default, lets paid plans opt out under Data Controls, and says it never trains on Enterprise data without written consent. 171632

Is Cursor or Devin Desktop better for coding?

Neither has an independent result that settles it. Artificial Analysis lists Grok 4.7 on its model leaderboard but no Composer or Cognition SWE model as read on 13 October 2026, and the scores each maker publishes are its own tests. Both sell Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 input and $20 output per million tokens, so the model is not the difference. Run both free plans on your own repository and compare the changes you would accept. 41227
