Quick answer

The best free AI headshot generator depends on the catch you can live with. On the vendors' own pages in October 2026, HeadshotPro's free generator gives one 1024×1024 headshot in minutes, Magic Hour gives three a day for personal use, Canva gives two credits every 24 hours, and BetterPic gives ten at 4K after a 60 to 90 day queue. If you already own a decent photo, editing it for free in Gemini or ChatGPT is often the better route.

The best free AI headshot generator depends on which catch you can live with: HeadshotPro's free generator gives you one finished 1024×1024 headshot in 5 to 10 minutes with no sign-up, Magic Hour gives three a day for personal use, and BetterPic gives ten at 4K if you can wait 60 to 90 days. If you already have a decent photo of yourself, editing it for free in Gemini or ChatGPT is often the better route, and it takes two uploads.

Based on each vendor's own free-tier page and help documentation, checked October 2026: HeadshotPro, Magic Hour, Canva, Aragon, BetterPic, Google's Gemini image help and OpenAI's Images in ChatGPT. This is a documentation comparison, not a scored output test: we did not run one set of selfies through every tool, so there is no likeness ranking here.

What you get instead is the part most lists skip: what each company commits to in writing about output count, waiting time, watermark, resolution and usage rights. Those five things decide whether "free" is usable. For how the services work and what the paid packs cost, start with our AI headshots complete guide; this page goes deep on the free tiers only.

Best free AI headshot generator: the free tiers side by side

Seven free routes, in the order of how quickly they hand you a usable file. "Not stated" means the vendor's page does not say, which is itself worth knowing before you upload your face.

Which free AI headshot generator fits your deadline?

Two questions sort the field: do you need the photo today, and do you need one image or a set to choose from. Nobody offers a large set today for nothing, which is the whole business model.

Free tiers by speed and output
Today
HeadshotPro free generator: one 1024×1024 headshot in 5 to 10 minutes. Gemini or ChatGPT: one edit per request.
Magic Hour: 3 a day, no watermark, personal use only. Canva: 2 credits per 24 hours. Aragon: about 30 minutes when there is no waitlist.
After a wait
Aragon during high demand, when free runs sit on a waitlist. If you are waiting anyway, BetterPic gives you more.
BetterPic free: 10 headshots at 4K with a commercial licence, after 60 to 90 days in the queue.
One image
A set to choose from

Read it by your deadline first, then by how many options you want to pick from.

A practical way to use this: start a BetterPic free run today for the set you will want later, then use a same-day option for the photo you need this week. They are not exclusive, and the slow queue costs nothing to sit in.

How many free headshots do you actually get?

Fewer than the landing pages suggest, and the units differ. BetterPic counts per generation, Magic Hour per day, Canva in credits and HeadshotPro in a single download.

Count matters less than it looks. Most people publish one headshot and keep a spare. The real question is whether any single output looks like you, and a tool that shows you several styles before you choose (HeadshotPro previews, BetterPic's ten) gives you more chances at that than a tool that returns one image per request.

AI headshot generator free online: the no-sign-up options

Three tools work from a single photo, and two of those need no account at all. These are the fastest way to find out whether an AI headshot suits you.

HeadshotPro free generator

You upload one selfie, the tool generates a range of styles in 5 to 10 minutes, and you keep one in HD at 1024×1024, square only. The rest stay as lower-resolution previews. HeadshotPro's free generator page says there is no sign-up, no email collection and no card, that the AI picks its top result as your free download, and that uploads are deleted from its servers within 24 hours. Unlocking the previews moves you to the paid product, listed at $29 as a first-view offer or $39 by default. Checked October 2026.

The limit to understand: you do not choose the keeper. If the automatic pick is not the one that looks most like you, the free route ends there.

Magic Hour

Magic Hour's headshot generator gives three headshots a day from one photo, in the browser, with no account. Its FAQ states there is no watermark for any user, including free users. The catch sits in the privacy section: subscriptions and credit packs permit commercial use, and users without either are limited to personal, non-commercial use. It lists file retention as one day and says uploads and outputs are not used for model training. Checked October 2026.

That makes it a fair choice for a personal profile and a poor one for a client-facing sales page, unless you buy credits.

Canva AI headshot generator

Canva's AI headshot generator runs as an app inside the Canva editor. Its FAQ says you get two free credits, and once both are used you wait 24 hours for more or buy extra credits inside the app. The feature page does not state output resolution, watermark or usage terms. Checked October 2026. Its advantage is what happens next: the headshot is already in an editor where you can remove the background, crop to a circle and drop it into a banner.

Free professional headshot AI from the dedicated services

Two paid headshot services run real free tiers that learn your face from several selfies, the same way their paid packs do. They produce a set, and they make you wait or accept less.

BetterPic free generator

This is the most generous free tier on paper: 10 finished headshots per free generation at 4K, across up to five outfit and background combinations, from 8 to 12 selfies, with no card. BetterPic's free page also states a full commercial licence. It is equally plain about the price: free generations wait 60 to 90 days in a shared queue because paid orders are processed first, and the tier stays free because BetterPic asks permission to use the results in its own marketing. Paid packs start from $35 one-time and cut the wait to under an hour. Checked October 2026.

Aragon free generator

Aragon's free generator takes a few selfies and returns headshots in about 30 minutes, with an email when they are ready. Aragon is direct that the free version does not have the same photorealism as its paid generator. Its FAQ says free credits come with every Aragon account, that free generations are limited per day and may go on a waitlist during high demand, and that paid plans add higher resolution, more than 20 outfits and backgrounds and up to 100 photos per generation. The page does not publish the free headshot count or resolution. Checked October 2026.

Use it as a sample: it tells you whether Aragon gets your face right before you spend $35 or more on a pack. The paid plans, pack sizes and turnaround times for all three services are in the services comparison in our headshots guide.

The two-upload DIY alternative: edit a photo you already have

If you own one sharp, well-lit photo of yourself, you may not need a headshot generator at all. A general image assistant can keep your face and change everything around it, and the free plans cover it.

Google's Gemini help says Nano Banana 2 can edit an uploaded image, accept multiple reference images and maintain the look of a person across images. Editing requires a personal account aged 18 or over, and downloads are 1K without a Google AI plan and 2K with one. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers, lets you upload an existing image and describe the change, and has an aspect ratio picker. Neither page publishes a fixed free allowance. Checked October 2026.

The two-upload method
  1. 1
Upload 1: your best real photo

Sharp, front-facing, even light, no filter. This is the only source for your face.

  2. 2
    Upload 2: a style reference

A headshot whose framing, light and background you want, such as your company's team-page style or your own older photo.

  3. 3
    Say which is which

Tell the assistant photo 1 is the face to keep unchanged and photo 2 is only for framing, lighting, background and clothing style.

  4. 4
Ask for square, head and shoulders

Profile photos are cropped to a circle, so keep the head centred with some air around it.

  5. 5
    Check likeness before anything else

If the face changed, say so and regenerate. Do not accept a flattering stranger.

  6. 6
    Download and inspect the file

Check the size and look in the corners for a visible watermark before you upload it anywhere.

Photo 1 is me. Keep my face, hair and features exactly as they are.
Photo 2 is a style reference only: copy its framing, lighting, background and clothing style, not the person.
Make a square head-and-shoulders headshot of me in that style, natural skin texture, relaxed expression.

Two cautions. The style reference should not be a stranger's portrait you found online; Google's page reminds users not to violate others' copyright or privacy rights, and you only need the lighting, not the person. And Google states that all media created or edited in the Gemini app carries an invisible SynthID watermark, with a visible watermark applied automatically in some countries and switchable in settings elsewhere (checked October 2026). Neither stops you using the picture, but a visible mark in a circle crop looks odd.

For wording that holds a face steady, our AI headshot prompt pack has 20 fill-in formulas, and the corporate headshot AI guide covers dress-code-safe styles by industry. If the photo is for a profile circle rather than a formal headshot, the sizes are in our AI profile picture guide.

Free AI headshot generator, Reddit-style: the three questions to ask

People who search Reddit for a free AI headshot generator are usually trying to find out what the landing page left out. We did not survey threads, and recommendations there go stale with each pricing change. The questions, though, are exactly right, and each has a checkable answer.

Before you upload selfies to any free tool
  • Is the download free, or only the preview? Look for the count of files you keep
  • Is there a visible watermark? If the page does not say, assume you must check the file
  • What size is the file? 1024×1024 is fine for a profile photo, thin for print
  • Is commercial use allowed on the free tier, or only on paid plans?
  • How long are your selfies and outputs kept, and can you delete them?
  • Are your photos used to train models or shown in the company's marketing?
  • Is there a daily limit or a queue, and how long is it stated to be?
  • Does the tool need one photo or a set? One photo means less data about your face

If a tool's page answers fewer than half of these, treat that as the answer. The seven routes above were chosen because their own pages address most of them.

When free is enough, and when to pay

Free covers more than it used to. A single good headshot for a profile is now a ten-minute job. What free tiers still do not give you is a choice of many finished files quickly, a redo when the set misses, or a clear commercial licence everywhere.

Free tier or paid pack
Free is enough if
  • You need one profile photo, not a set
  • The use is personal: LinkedIn, a CV, a chat avatar
  • You already have a good photo to edit
  • You can wait weeks for a larger set
  • You are testing whether a service gets your face right
Pay for a pack if
  • You need several styles today
  • The photo goes on a sales page, ad or press kit
  • You want a redo or refund route when it misses
  • You need the same look across a whole team
  • You do not want your results used in marketing

On the pricing pages checked in October 2026, paid packs start at $29 at HeadshotPro and $35 at Aragon and BetterPic, all one-time. Aragon's page was showing a limited-time discount against higher list prices when we read it, which is normal in this market. For teams, the rollout and consent side matters more than the price; see AI headshots for teams.

There is also a third path for anyone who needs images of themselves every week rather than once: train a model on your own face and generate on demand. That is the same skill as building an AI persona, and it is what the AI Influencers program teaches end to end, from the training set to consistent photo and video output. The consistent character guide compares the methods if you want to see what is involved first.

Will a free AI headshot pass on LinkedIn?

The rule is about likeness, not about the tool or what you paid. LinkedIn's profile photo guidelines say you can use an illustration, caricature or other artistic rendering of yourself, that the photo must reflect your likeness, and that other people's likenesses, including stock imagery and depictions of fictional characters, are not acceptable. Checked October 2026.

Single-photo free tools are the ones most likely to drift, because they have one image of your face to work from. Apply the meeting test: someone who sees the photo and then meets you on a call should recognise you at once. If you would be uploading somebody else's photos to make a headshot for them, stop and read our AI likeness rights guide first; consent comes before convenience.

Free AI headshot generators: FAQ

What is the best free AI headshot generator in 2026?

There is no single winner, because each free tier trades something different. On the vendors' own pages in October 2026, HeadshotPro's free generator gives one 1024×1024 headshot in 5 to 10 minutes with no sign-up, Magic Hour gives three a day for personal use, Canva gives two credits every 24 hours, and BetterPic gives ten at 4K after a 60 to 90 day queue. Pick by deadline and by where the photo will be used.

Are free AI headshot generators really free?

The ones in this comparison are free at the download step, with no card required, according to their own pages. The cost shows up elsewhere: a small output count, a long queue, a non-commercial licence, lower resolution, or permission for the company to use your results in its marketing. Read the free-tier terms before you upload, because in most of these trades your face is the payment.

Do free AI headshot generators add a watermark?

Magic Hour states that its headshots carry no watermark for any user, and HeadshotPro describes its free download as a real HD headshot. BetterPic, Canva and Aragon do not mention watermarks on the pages we read. Google says images made or edited in the Gemini app carry an invisible SynthID watermark, plus a visible one depending on your settings and country. Checked October 2026; always open the downloaded file and look.

Can I use a free AI headshot on LinkedIn?

Yes, if it looks like you. LinkedIn's profile photo guidelines allow an illustration or other artistic rendering of yourself, but say the photo must reflect your likeness, and they rule out other people's likenesses such as stock imagery or fictional characters. A free headshot that changes your face shape or takes ten years off fails that test whichever tool made it. Checked October 2026.

Can I use a free AI headshot commercially?

It depends on the tool. BetterPic's free page promises a full commercial licence on its ten free headshots. Magic Hour limits users without a subscription or credit pack to personal, non-commercial use. HeadshotPro and Aragon say the photos are yours to use and point to their terms for the detail. If the headshot is going on a sales page, a paid ad or a book cover, read the terms first. Checked October 2026.

Is there a free AI headshot generator Reddit users recommend?

Recommendations in Reddit threads change with every pricing update, and it is hard to tell a user from a vendor in the replies, so we did not rank by them. The questions those threads keep asking are the right ones: is the download free, is there a watermark, and what happens to my selfies. This comparison answers each from the vendor's own page, checked October 2026, so you can verify every answer yourself.

How many selfies do I need for a free AI headshot?

From one to twelve, depending on the method. HeadshotPro's free generator, Magic Hour and Canva work from a single photo. Aragon asks for a few selfies from different angles, and BetterPic asks for 8 to 12 with varied angles, expressions and lighting. The single-photo tools are faster; the multi-photo services have more information about your face to work from. Checked October 2026.
