Yes, you can see who views your Instagram story: swipe up on your story to see usernames and the count for each photo or video. Only you can see the list, for up to 48 hours after posting. Anonymous viewer apps are not Instagram features and break its terms. For real interest signals, use replies, polls and link taps.
Can you see who views your Instagram story? Yes: open your story and swipe up to see the number and the usernames of everyone who viewed each photo or video, and only you can see that list. Instagram's help center says the list is available for up to 48 hours after you post. After that, usernames are gone, though public and professional accounts still keep story insights for longer.

Story viewers are one of the clearest signals of who is paying attention. For how stories fit into the rest of your content, see our Instagram content strategy playbook.
Can you see who views your Instagram story, and for how long?
| What you want to know | Possible? | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Who viewed each photo or video | Yes, usernames and count | Swipe up on your story |
| How long you can see the list | Up to 48 hours after posting | Instagram help |
| Who else can see your viewer list | Only you | Instagram help |
| Views on Facebook (if shared there) | Shown below Instagram viewers | Instagram help |
| Story insights after 48 hours | Public and professional accounts, within 90 days | Instagram insights help |
| Who looked at your profile | Not available | No official feature |
In short: the viewer list is private to you and lasts 48 hours. If you shared the story to Facebook, Instagram says you can scroll down to see who saw it there too.
How to see story viewers
- 1Open your story
Tap your profile picture or Your story in the tray.
- 2Swipe up
The viewer list shows the count and usernames for that photo or video.
- 3Move between clips
Each photo or video has its own viewer list.
- 4Use the options next to a name
For example, to hide future stories from that person.
- 5Check within 48 hours
After that, the username list is no longer available.
Viewing works both ways. Instagram says that when you see someone's story, they can tell you have seen it. There is no official setting to watch stories without appearing in the viewer list.
Are anonymous story viewers real?
Websites and apps that promise to show stories anonymously, or to reveal who looked at your profile, are not Instagram features. Instagram's Terms of Use say you cannot access or collect information in unauthorised ways, including collecting information in an automated way without Instagram's express permission. Tools that ask for your Instagram login are a further risk: handing your password to a third party is a common route to account takeover.

Controlling who sees your story
If the question behind the search is privacy, Instagram gives you direct controls. From the viewer list, you can tap the options next to someone's name and hide your story from them. Instagram notes that hiding your story is different from blocking: the person can still see your profile and posts. You can also share a story only with a close friends list, and your account's privacy setting affects where your story appears.
Why viewer counts differ from what you expect
Viewer lists often raise questions: why one clip has fewer viewers than the one before, why a close friend is missing, or why the count looks lower than your follower number. A few practical reasons explain most of it.
- Drop-off between clips: each photo or video has its own list, and people tap away part way through a series. Later clips almost always show fewer viewers than the first.
- Not everyone opens stories: followers see your story only if they open the story tray while it is live, and many do not check stories every day.
- Privacy settings and close friends: a close friends story is only shown to that list, and your account's privacy setting affects where your story appears.
- Hidden from someone: if you previously hid your story from a person, they will not appear because they cannot see it.
For public and professional accounts, story insights show views and interactions as counts, which is the better place to track trends over weeks. Compare similar stories, such as one tutorial clip against another, rather than comparing a single clip against your follower total.
Story viewers for business and creator accounts
For a business or creator, the viewer list is less useful as a list of names and more useful as a quick read on which stories hold attention. A practical routine is to check two numbers after each story set: how many people saw the first clip, and how many reached the last. A big gap suggests the sequence is too long or the opening clip promised something the rest did not deliver.
Names in the list still have one good use: following up. If a person views every story about a product but never replies, a friendly, relevant message can start a conversation, as long as it is welcome and not spammy. Keep it to people who already engage with you, and respect anyone who does not reply.
Better signals than the viewer list
A viewer list tells you who tapped past your story, not who cared about it. Interactive features give you clearer signals, and they work for any account:
- Replies to a story, which land in your DMs
- Poll and quiz votes, with voter names
- Question sticker answers
- Shares of your story to DMs
- Interaction counts in story insights (public accounts)
Replies matter most because they start a conversation. Asking a simple question in a story, then replying to every answer, turns passive viewers into contacts. Our guide to Instagram story marketing covers sticker strategies, and our Instagram DM limits guide explains how to reply at volume without tripping spam limits.

Story insights for public accounts
Instagram's insights help says public accounts can view insights for specific stories, and choose preset or custom timeframes within the past 90 days. That gives you counts, not names, which is usually what matters for planning content. If you want help turning stories into conversations and sales, our Instagram Ignited program covers story funnels and DM conversion.
Can you see who views your Instagram story: FAQ
Can you see who views your Instagram story?
Yes. Instagram's help center says that if you open your story and swipe up, you see the number and usernames of the people who viewed each photo or video. Only you can see that list, and you can look at it for up to 48 hours after you post the story. Checked October 2026.
Can people tell if I view their Instagram story?
Yes. Instagram says that when you see someone's story, they will be able to tell that you have seen it. Your username appears in their viewer list for the time they can see it. There is no official setting to view stories anonymously.
Are anonymous Instagram story viewer apps real?
Some websites claim to show stories without the owner knowing, but they are not Instagram features. Instagram's Terms of Use prohibit accessing or collecting information in unauthorised or automated ways without its permission, and tools that ask for your login put your account at risk. Treat them as unsafe.
Can I see who viewed my story after 48 hours?
Not the list of usernames. Instagram says you can see who has seen your story up to 48 hours after posting. If you have a public or professional account, insights for that story, such as views and interactions, remain available in your insights for any timeframe within the past 90 days.
Can I stop someone from seeing my story?
Yes. While looking at who has seen your story, you can tap the options next to a person's name and choose to hide your story from them. Instagram notes that hiding your story is different from blocking and does not stop them seeing your profile and posts. You can also share stories only to a close friends list.
Does the order of story viewers mean anything?
Instagram has not published an official explanation of how the viewer list is ordered, so treat any claim that it reveals who is most interested in you with caution. For real signals of interest, look at replies, poll votes, sticker taps and link clicks.
