Why Are My Hashtags Not Working? 9 Reasons and Fixes

Why are my hashtags not working? Nine causes, from the five-tag limit and private accounts to restricted tags, each with a quick test and a fix for 2026.

Quick answer

Hashtags usually stop working for one of nine reasons: too many tags for the five-tag limit, a private account, tags hidden in comments, mega-tags that bury the post, a restricted tag, a post or account that is not eligible for recommendations, engagement-swap tags, or expecting reach that hashtags never give. Each has a quick test. Hashtags now help search and labelling; reach comes from how viewers respond.

Why are my hashtags not working? Usually because the post is private, uses more than the five tags Instagram now allows, hides its tags in a comment, competes on huge generic tags, or is not eligible to appear in search results. Hashtags in 2026 help people find a post through search; they do not add reach on their own, so a post can be tagged perfectly and still get few views.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center on how posts appear in hashtag results and private posts with hashtags, Instagram's Search explainer, the @creators announcement on the five-tag limit and Meta's spam policy.

Run the checklist below in order; the first five items take under a minute each. For the bigger picture of what to measure once tags are fixed, see the Instagram analytics hub, and for choosing the tags themselves, our 2026 hashtag strategy guide.

The nine-point hashtag check
  • Five tags or fewer in the caption
  • Account is public
  • Tags are in the caption, not a comment
  • You are judging tags on search, not reach
  • At least some tags are specific, not only huge generic ones
  • No tag on the list shows an empty or limited page
  • Account Status shows no recommendation problem
  • No repetitive posting or engagement-swap behavior
  • No like-for-like or follow-for-follow tags

1. You are over the five-tag limit

Instagram now allows up to five hashtags per post or reel, per its @creators announcement in December 2025 (checked October 2026). Old habits of 20 or 30 tags no longer fit. Paste your caption into our free Instagram hashtag checker to count tags against the limit and flag generic ones, then keep the five that describe the post most precisely.

2. Your account is private

Instagram's Help Center is direct: if your account is private and you add a hashtag, the post won't appear on the hashtag page. Only approved followers see it. If hashtag discovery matters, the account has to be public; professional accounts are public automatically.

3. Your tags are in the first comment

Instagram's Search explainer gives the instruction in one line: for a post to be found in Search, put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments. The first-comment trick was about tidiness in the 30-tag era. With five tags, it only costs you findability.

4. You expect hashtags to add reach

The same explainer says the text people type is by far the most important search signal, and that Instagram matches it against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. Hashtags are one of five places your words are read, not a distribution switch. Reach follows how viewers respond, which is why reels that get no views almost never have a hashtag problem.

5. You only use mega-tags

Instagram says the order of posts in hashtag results depends on factors including when the post was shared and how others engage with it. On a tag with a huge volume of posts, yours is buried within minutes. Specific tags that describe the subject, the place or the niche have less competition and match what an interested person would actually search.

6. The tag itself is restricted

Instagram may remove posts from hashtag results if people use the tag to post content that goes against its Community Standards, and Search avoids showing hashtags that break its Recommendations Guidelines. Test it by opening the tag page: if it shows few or no posts for a common word, the tag has likely been limited. Drop it.

7. The post is not eligible for recommendations

Meeting the Recommendation Guidelines is one of the stated ordering factors for hashtag results. A post that breaks them can still reach followers but will not be pushed to strangers browsing a tag. On a professional account, open Account Status to check.

8. The account looks like spam

Instagram's Search explainer says accounts that post spam or violate its guidelines may appear lower in search results. Repetitive posts, identical captions across many posts and bursts of mass activity all count against you. Search your own username from another account: if you rank low for your own name, this is likely the cause.

9. You use engagement-swap tags

Tags such as like-for-like and follow-for-follow advertise trading engagement. Meta's spam policy prohibits exchanging engagement, and it lists the use of specific hashtags among the forms of engagement that cannot be traded. Remove them from every caption, including old ones you plan to resurface.

What a working hashtag set looks like

Once the nine checks pass, the set itself decides how findable the post is. A working set describes the post the way a searcher would: the subject, the format, the audience and, where it applies, the place. It avoids tags that describe every post on Instagram, and it never asks for engagement.

Not working
  • Twenty tags pasted from an old list
  • Generic tags like love, instagood or reels
  • Tags hidden in the first comment
  • Like-for-like and follow-for-follow
Working
  • Five tags written for this post
  • Subject, niche and place tags a searcher would type
  • Tags in the caption next to clear keywords
  • Nothing that trades engagement

Write the set for each post rather than reusing one block everywhere. Identical caption blocks across many posts are one of the repetitive patterns that make an account look like spam, and a set written for the post is more likely to match what someone types into search. Our Instagram captions guide covers how to place keywords in the first line so the caption and the tags work together.

Why are hashtags not showing posts?

When you tap a hashtag and the page is empty or nearly empty, the cause is the tag, not you. Instagram removes posts from results when a tag is used for content that breaks its Community Standards, and limits tags that break its Recommendations Guidelines. Pages for place and hashtag results only include public photos and videos shared with that tag.

Remember too that results are personal. Instagram's Search explainer says your own activity, such as the accounts you follow and the posts you have viewed, shapes what you see, so the hashtag page on your phone may not match what a customer sees on theirs. When you test whether a post appears, check from a second account or ask someone outside your circle to look, and give a new post some time before you judge it.

Instagram hashtag page not showing my post: the fix order

Fix it in this order
  1. 1
    Check privacy

Public account? If not, nothing else on this list matters.

  2. 2
    Check placement and count

Five tags or fewer, in the caption.

  3. 3
    Check the tags

Open each tag page. Drop any that look empty, and swap mega-tags for specific ones.

  4. 4
    Check eligibility

Account Status for recommendation problems on the post or the account.

  5. 5
    Check your expectations

If the post is findable but still not reaching people, work on hooks, watch time and sends instead.

If everything checks out and reach is still low, the problem is upstream of hashtags. Our tutorial on the Instagram account reach check shows how to confirm whether reach dropped across the account or on one format. To build content that travels on its own, our Instagram Ignited program covers hooks, Reels and the search-friendly profile setup together.

Hashtags not working: FAQ

Why is my post not showing up on the hashtag page?

The most common reasons are a private account, since Instagram does not show private posts on hashtag pages, a post that does not meet the Recommendation Guidelines, or a large tag where newer and more engaging posts push yours down. Instagram says hashtag results are ordered by factors including when the post was shared, how people engage with it and whether it meets those guidelines.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram in 2026?

Up to five hashtags per post or reel, per Instagram's @creators announcement in December 2025 (checked October 2026). Some older Help Center pages still mention 30, but the five-tag limit is the current rule. Instagram said fewer, more targeted hashtags work better than many generic ones, so pick the five that describe the post most precisely.

Do hashtags still work on Instagram?

They work as labels for search, not as a reach lever. Instagram's Search explainer says it matches what people type against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. A specific hashtag helps the right person find a post. It does not push a post to more people on its own; what viewers do after seeing it decides that.

Should I put hashtags in the caption or the first comment?

In the caption. Instagram's own guidance on showing up in search says to put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments, for a post to be found in Search. Moving tags to a comment was an aesthetic habit from the 30-tag era; with a five-tag limit it costs you findability and saves almost nothing in caption space.

Can hashtags get my account shadowbanned?

Instagram does not use that term, but tags can cause problems. Engagement-swap tags such as like-for-like advertise exchanging engagement, which Meta's spam policy prohibits, and repeated content that breaks the Recommendation Guidelines can make an account ineligible for recommendations for a period of time. Check Account Status on a professional account to see whether that has happened.

Why does a hashtag show no recent posts?

Instagram may remove posts from search results when people use a hashtag to share content that goes against its Community Standards. Search also avoids hashtags that break its Recommendations Guidelines. If a tag shows few or no posts, it has likely been limited. Drop it and use a more specific tag that clearly describes your content.
