Do Hashtags Still Work on Reels in 2026?

Do hashtags work on Reels in 2026? What Instagram has said, with dates, what two large 2026 datasets found, and a rule for using zero to five tags on a reel.

Quick answer

Hashtags still work on Reels in 2026 as labels for search, and there is no public evidence that they add reach. Instagram caps them at five, its head says they help search but do not increase reach, and its ranking documentation for Reels never mentions them. Two large 2026 datasets disagree on whether hashtags correlate with better or worse results, and neither isolates Reels. Use zero to five specific tags and spend the effort on the caption and the opening.

Do hashtags work on Reels in 2026? Yes as labels that help search and topic matching, and no as a way to get more views: Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, said on December 18, 2025 that hashtags help with search but "don't increase your reach." You can use up to five on a reel, Meta's own description of how Reels are ranked never mentions them, and the two large 2026 datasets that looked at hashtags point in opposite directions.

Checked October 2026. Official sources: Instagram's Help Center on using hashtags and hashtag search results, the creator FAQ, the @creators announcement of the five-hashtag limit, Instagram's Search explainer and Meta's Reels system card. Third-party data: Metricool's 2026 Instagram Study and Fanpage Karma's hashtag analysis. We ran no test of our own, and this page reports none.

Hashtags are one small field on the share screen covered in our Instagram Reels guide. How to choose the five is in the Instagram hashtag strategy guide. This page answers the narrower question people keep asking about Reels: is there any evidence the tags do anything?

The findings in brief

The one hard number
5
hashtags on a reel or post, the limit in Instagram's Help Center
  • Announced by @creators on December 18, 2025
  • The earlier allowance was 30
  • No official minimum and no stated benefit for using all five

Source: Instagram Help Center and @creators, checked October 2026

  1. The limit is five. The Help Center says: "You can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won't post." The iPhone, Android and computer versions of the page all carry that sentence.
  2. Instagram's head says hashtags do not add reach. Mosseri has said it three times that we can date: February 2025, May 2025 and December 2025.
  3. Instagram's creator FAQ is softer. It still says relevant trending hashtags "can help you reach more people, who are interested in those topics specifically."
  4. The Reels ranking documentation does not mention hashtags. Meta's system card lists nine predictions and example signals for each. None of them is a hashtag.
  5. Independent data conflicts. Metricool found posts with hashtags did markedly worse than average; Fanpage Karma found five hashtags did very slightly better than none. Neither study isolates Reels, and both are correlations.

How we checked

This is a review of published evidence. We read every official Instagram and Meta page we could find that makes a claim about hashtags, and kept statements only when we could attach a date and a link. For third-party data we kept studies that state their sample, and we describe that sample next to each number. Vendor blog posts that quote percentages without a source were left out, which removed most of what ranks for this question.

Source: Instagram, @creators, The Verge and Social Media Today, checked October 2026

The February and May remarks are as Social Media Today summarised them in its December report. The December statements are the clearest. Instagram's own wording, quoted by Social Media Today, was: "We find that using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content's performance and people's experience on Instagram." Mosseri, on his Instagram advice channel as reported by The Verge, added that hashtags do help with search but "don't increase your reach," and that creators should focus on what resonates with their audience.

One official page reads differently. The creator FAQ answers "Do hashtags help my content reach more people?" with: "Trending hashtags that are relevant to the topics in your reel can help you reach more people, who are interested in those topics specifically. Don't try to game the system by showing irrelevant hashtags, because engagement and consequently distribution may suffer if your content is shown to audiences who aren't interested in your content." The same page says Instagram detects trends "using factors like audio and hashtags." The FAQ carries no date, so we cannot say whether it predates Mosseri's statements. Read together, the two are compatible: a relevant tag can help the right people find a reel, and no tag makes a reel travel further than its viewers carry it.

Instagram Reels hashtags: what the ranking system reads

Reels are ranked on predicted behaviour. Meta's Reels system card, updated November 11, 2025, lists nine predictions: whether you will watch less than three seconds, watch more than most viewers of a reel that length, reshare, share off Instagram, comment, follow the author, use the audio, tap Interested, or open a reel from Explore. Each comes with example signals such as watch time, dismissals, likes and past shares. The word hashtag does not appear on the page. The card lists examples, not a complete inventory, so that absence is strong evidence, not proof.

What a hashtag does on a reel, and what it does not
What it does
  • Gives Search one more piece of text to match
  • Puts a public reel in that tag's results
  • Helps Instagram spot which trend a reel belongs to
  • Tells a viewer the topic at a glance
What it does not do
  • Appear among the signals Meta lists for ranking Reels
  • Reach followers of the tag: nobody can follow one now
  • Make up for a weak first three seconds
  • Work from a private account, which stays out of public results

That leaves search, and search has moved from tags to words. Instagram's Search explainer ranks "your text in Search" first and says it tries to match what you type "with relevant usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places." Hashtags are one of five things it matches, and the caption is another. The Help Center's own wording is split on where a tag leads: the app versions of the hashtag page say a tagged post "will be visible on the corresponding search results," where the computer version says "hashtag page." Either way a hashtag is one keyword among several, and the same word written in the caption is matched too. How Reels distribution works beyond search is in how the Reels algorithm works.

What the third-party data shows

Two 2026 studies are large enough to take seriously, and they disagree.

Metricool: posts with at least one hashtag, indexed to the platform average
Platform average
100
Views with a hashtag
68.3
Interactions with a hashtag
66.1

Index derived from the published figures: 31.70% fewer views and 33.89% fewer interactions. Source: Metricool 2026 Instagram Study, June 2026; 24,364,803 posts from 375,118 accounts

Metricool's gap is large, and Metricool does not claim hashtags cause it. Its own write-up says: "we can't be sure that the hashtags are the sole reason. We often find that accounts that spam hashtags like it's 2013 are also behind in other areas of their strategy." We think that is the likelier reading: the hashtag is a marker of an older playbook, not the cause of the gap.

Fanpage Karma: how many hashtags posts carry
  • No hashtags45%
  • 1 to 4 hashtags (remainder)34%
  • Exactly 5 hashtags14%
  • More than 5 hashtags7%

The 1 to 4 share is what is left after the three published figures. Source: Fanpage Karma, analysis of 1.6 million Instagram posts, 2026

Fanpage Karma measured reach relative to follower count across 1.6 million posts. Posts with five hashtags reached 2% more than posts with none, posts with one to three did slightly worse than none, and posts with more than five lost 3%. The article does not state the period or how accounts were chosen. A 2% difference in a correlational study is too small to act on by itself, and its direction is the opposite of Metricool's.

Are reels hashtags worth it? A rule by reel type

Worth a few seconds when the reel has a topic someone would search, and worth nothing when it does not. The old question of 3 tags against 30 is settled by the limit; the real choice is between zero, a couple and five. This table is our rule, built on the statements above. It is not an Instagram rule.

Reel typeTagsWhich onesWhy
Searchable topic: how-to, recipe, review, place3 to 5Specific topic tags that repeat the words in your captionSearch matches captions and hashtags; this is where a tag can be found
Trend or audio-led reel1 to 2The trend's own tag, if it has oneInstagram says it detects trends using audio and hashtags
Local business1 to 3City, neighbourhood or venue tagsPeople search places; a generic tag adds nothing
Campaign or community1Your branded or community tagCollects customer posts in one set of results
Entertainment with no topic0NoneNothing to label; the reel lives or dies on watch time and sends
Trial reelSame as the regular versionIdentical tags on every version you testKeeps the caption out of the comparison

We have not sorted this by account size because no source above gives a reason to. Nothing Instagram has published ties the value of a hashtag to follower count, and neither third-party study reports its hashtag result by account size.

How to add hashtags to a reel without wasting them

  • Put them in the caption. Instagram's Search explainer says so directly. The case for hiding them in a comment is covered in first comment hashtags.
  • Write the keyword in a sentence first. Search matches captions as well as hashtags. If the tag is #sourdoughstarter, the caption should say sourdough starter.
  • Count before you post. Paste the caption into the free Instagram Hashtag Checker, which counts tags against the limit and flags generic ones.
  • Skip tags that describe the format. A reel does not need to be told it is a reel. The creator FAQ warns that irrelevant hashtags can hurt distribution by sending the reel to the wrong audience.
  • Check the account is public. The Help Center says posts tagged from private profiles do not appear publicly in the tag's results.
  • Hold them constant when you test. If you compare versions as trial reels, use the same tags on each; see do trial reels use hashtags.
Before you add hashtags to a reel
  • The reel has a topic someone would type into search
  • The caption already says that topic in plain words
  • Five tags or fewer, counted
  • Each tag names the subject, place or community, not the format
  • Tags are in the caption, not a comment
  • The account is public
  • You are not counting on them for views

If tags you added are not showing where you expect, the causes are in why your hashtags are not working. For everything else search reads, the SEO and Hashtags and Instagram SEO lessons in Instagram Ignited cover names, bios, captions and on-screen text as one system.

Hashtags on Reels: FAQ

Do hashtags work on Reels in 2026?

For search and topic labelling, yes. For reach, Instagram's head says no: Adam Mosseri said on December 18, 2025 that hashtags help with search but "don't increase your reach." Instagram's creator FAQ still says relevant trending hashtags can help a reel reach people interested in that topic. Use up to five specific tags as labels and do not expect them to move views.

How many hashtags can you put on a reel?

Five. Instagram's Help Center says: "You can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won't post." Instagram's @creators account announced the change on December 18, 2025 as up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post. Before that the allowance was 30. Checked October 2026.

Do hashtags increase Reels views?

There is no public evidence that they do. Meta's Reels ranking card lists nine predictions and their signals, and hashtags are not among them. Metricool's 2026 study of 24.3 million posts found posts with at least one hashtag had 31.70% fewer views than the platform average, a correlation it does not present as cause. Fanpage Karma found a 2% reach edge for five tags.

Are reels hashtags worth it?

Worth ten seconds, not ten minutes. A reel on a topic people search for, such as a recipe, a place or a how-to, benefits from three to five specific tags and the same words in the caption. A reel with no searchable topic can go without. The time is better spent on the first line of the caption and the first three seconds of the video.

Should reel hashtags go in the caption or the comments?

The caption. Instagram's explainer on how Search works says: "For a post to be found in Search, put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments." The Help Center does allow hashtags in comments, and a tag there still attaches the post to that tag, but with a five-tag limit there is no clutter left to hide.

Are Instagram hashtags dead?

As a reach tactic, close to it: people can no longer follow a hashtag, the limit fell from 30 to 5, and Instagram's head says tags do not increase reach. As a label they are alive. Search matches hashtags along with captions, bios and usernames, a public reel still appears in a tag's results, and Instagram says it uses hashtags to detect trends.

What happens if I use more than five hashtags on a reel?

The Help Center's wording is that if you include more than 5 tags on a single photo or video, "your comment won't post." Instagram said in December 2025 that the limit would roll out gradually, so behaviour may differ by account. Our free hashtag checker counts the tags in a caption before you paste it, so you do not find out at posting time.
