Instagram Account Reach Check: Free Methods and Tools

Instagram account reach check: where to find accounts reached in Insights, how to compare 7, 30 and 90-day windows, and how to read reach by format for free.

Quick answer

The free Instagram account reach check is Insights: open your dashboard, tap Accounts reached and pick a window within the past 90 days. Compare the same window month on month, split reach by format in the content library, and work out reach rate as accounts reached divided by followers. Third-party reach checkers cannot see another account's reach; they estimate it.

The most accurate Instagram account reach check is free and built in: open Insights from your profile dashboard, tap Accounts reached, and choose a timeframe within the past 90 days. Accounts reached is the number of unique accounts that saw your content at least once, and only you can see the real figure for your account.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center articles on available insights, viewing account and content insights, selecting a date range, reel insights and troubleshooting Insights. Instagram labels several of these metrics as estimated and in development.

By the end of this tutorial you will have three things: your account's reach for a 30-day and a 90-day window, reach split by format so you know which posts carry the account, and a reach rate you can compare against next month. It takes about ten minutes. For how reach fits with every other Instagram metric, the Instagram analytics hub is the overview.

Before you start: what you need

Pre-flight
  • A public account; Insights are not available on private accounts
  • A professional account for the full dashboard, or Your dashboard on a public personal account
  • The latest version of the Instagram app, or a browser on instagram.com
  • A note of your current follower count for the reach rate step
  • A spreadsheet or notes app to log the numbers each month

If you recently switched from private to public, or from a personal to a professional account, older Insights may be missing. Instagram says that if you switch back to private you lose access, but you can regain past data by switching back to public within 90 days.

How to check account reach on Instagram, step by step

The app and the website show the same numbers. Use whichever is closer to hand; the steps below cover both.

Check accounts reached in Insights
  1. 1
    Open your dashboard

In the app, go to your profile and open Professional dashboard (or Your dashboard on a personal account). On instagram.com, select Dashboard from the left-hand menu.

  2. 2
    Open account insights

Tap Insights, or choose Account from the Insights dropdown on the web. Expected result: an overview with Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared.

  3. 3
    Pick a timeframe

Use the date dropdown: Last 7, 14 or 30 days, Previous month, Last 90 days, or a custom range within the past 90 days.

  4. 4
    Open Accounts reached

Tap Views or the reach figure to open the detail, then tap the (i) for Instagram's definition of each metric.

  5. 5
    Read the breakdown

Look at the split by content type and between followers and non-followers where Instagram shows it.

  6. 6
    Log the number

Write down accounts reached, the window and the date. This is your baseline.

One detail from the Help Center saves confusion: a custom range must start and end at least one day apart, and audience demographics only appear on preset timeframes once you have reached more than 100 accounts.

Reach versus views: the mistake that breaks the check

Instagram moved Views to the front of Insights, so it is the first number most people see. It is a good measure of total attention, but it is not reach. For a reach check, always open Accounts reached, and compare like with like: the same metric, the same window length, the same type of content.

Which time window to use: 7, 30 or 90 days

Instagram offers five presets plus a custom range. Each answers a different question, so pick the window before you look at the number.

WindowBest forWatch out for
Last 7 daysWeekly check-ins, testing a new formatToo short to judge after a quiet week
Last 14 daysComparing two posting cadencesStill sensitive to one breakout post
Last 30 daysThe default health check, month on monthCan hide a drop that started recently
Previous monthClean calendar comparisons for reportsIgnores what happened this month
Last 90 daysTrends, seasonal patterns, demographicsSlow to show a recent change
Custom rangeBefore and after a change you madeMust sit within the past 90 days

For a monthly reach check, use Last 30 days and compare it with the same window a month earlier from your notes. For a decision such as "did posting more often help?", use two custom ranges of equal length on either side of the change. Ninety days is where trends show; a single good or bad week stops dominating.

Check reach by format and by post

Account totals tell you whether reach is up or down. Per-format numbers tell you why. In the overview, tap into Content you shared to open the content library, where Instagram lets you filter your posts by media type, reach, interactions and timeframe.

From account total to the post that moved it
  1. 01
    Account reach

Last 30 days versus the previous 30

  2. 02
    Content library

Filter by media type: reels, posts, stories

  3. 03
    Sort by reach

Find the top and bottom performers in each format

  4. 04
    Open the post

Reels show views, watch time, accounts reached, average watch time and follows

  5. 05
    Decide

Repeat what reached people; fix or drop what did not

For reels, the per-post detail is the richest. Instagram's reel insights include accounts reached, average watch time and follows, and stay available for up to two years after posting. If reels reach is the problem, the guide to why reels stop getting views pairs each weak number with its fix.

Turn reach into a reach rate

Raw reach grows as an account grows, which makes it hard to compare across months or with other accounts. Reach rate fixes that: accounts reached in a window divided by your follower count, as a percentage.

  • Illustrative input: 12,000 accounts reached in the last 30 days and 8,000 followers.
  • Calculation: 12,000 divided by 8,000 is 1.5, so the 30-day reach rate is 150%.
  • Reading it: above 100% means you reached more accounts than you have followers, which usually means content is travelling to non-followers.

Instagram publishes no benchmark for this number, so the comparison that matters is with yourself. Pair it with engagement: the free engagement rate calculator shows whether the people you reach are responding, and the two together tell you whether you have a distribution problem or a content problem.

Do third-party Instagram reach checkers work?

For your own account, a tool that connects through Instagram's official login can read the same Insights you see, and some are handy for exporting history beyond 90 days. Instagram warns against tools that ask for your password, so only connect through Meta's login screen.

For any other account, a "reach checker" cannot see reach. Reach is private to the account owner. These sites estimate it from public likes, comments and follower counts, and estimates can be far off, especially for reels that travel widely with low engagement. Use them for rough competitive context, never for decisions about your own content.

How to read the result: four common patterns

A reach number on its own says little. The pattern across windows and formats is what points to a cause. These are the four we see most often when we run this check on creator accounts:

  • Reach steady, engagement falling. People still see the content but respond less. That is a content problem: hooks, topics or format fatigue. Look at average watch time on recent reels first.
  • Reach falling in one format only. If reels drop while carousels and stories hold, the problem sits in that format. Compare your last ten reels with the ten before them on watch time and shares.
  • Reach falling everywhere at once. A sudden drop across every format at the same time points at the account rather than the content. Check eligibility for recommendations before you change anything else.
  • Reach mostly from followers. When almost all of the audience already follows you, the content is not travelling. Content built for strangers, Collabs and trial reels are the usual ways back to new viewers.

Stories behave differently from the rest. They are shown mainly to people who follow you, so story reach tracks how engaged your existing audience is rather than how far content travels. Read it as a loyalty number and keep it separate from reel and post reach when you compare months.

Write the pattern down next to the number each month. After three or four months the log becomes the most useful analytics view you have, because it shows how your own account responds to changes in cadence, format and topic, which no outside benchmark can tell you.

Troubleshooting a reach check

  • Insights missing. Check the account is public, update the app, or use the dashboard on instagram.com.
  • Old posts show no data. Reel insights only exist for reels posted on or after May 14, 2021, and older data may be missing after an account type switch.
  • Reach fell on everything at once. Open Account Status to see whether your content is eligible for recommendations, then run the free Instagram reach drop diagnoser.
  • Numbers changed after you looked. Instagram marks several metrics as estimated and in development, so small revisions are normal. Log the number on a fixed day each month.

If your reach rose but engagement looks inflated, check that nothing artificial is in the mix; our piece on why engagement pods backfire explains how they distort the data. Instagram account reach check: FAQ

How do I check my Instagram account reach for free?

Use Instagram Insights, which is free. On a public account, open your professional dashboard or Your dashboard, tap Insights, then Accounts reached, and choose a timeframe. On a computer, go to instagram.com, select Dashboard, then pick Account from the Insights menu. Instagram lets you view any period within the past 90 days, using preset or custom ranges.

Can I check someone else's Instagram reach?

No. Accounts reached is only shown in the account owner's own Insights. A website that claims to check another account's reach is estimating it from public likes, comments and follower counts, which can be far from the real number. For a competitor, compare public engagement over time instead, and treat any reach figure a checker shows as a guess.

What is the difference between reach and views on Instagram?

Accounts reached counts unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once. Views counts the number of times content was played or displayed, so one person watching a reel three times adds three views and one account reached. Instagram's Help Center notes that for reels, reach counts accounts that saw the reel on screen whether or not it played.

Why can I not see reach in my Instagram Insights?

Insights need a public account; switching to private removes access, and you can regain past data if you switch back within 90 days. Audience demographics also need a preset timeframe and more than 100 accounts reached. If Insights are missing entirely, update the app or check on instagram.com, where the dashboard shows the same account and content data.

What is a good reach rate on Instagram?

Instagram publishes no benchmark. Reach rate is accounts reached divided by followers, and the useful comparison is with your own history: the same calculation over the same window, month after month. Compare formats against each other too. A falling rate across every format points at the account, while a drop in one format points at that format.

How far back can I check Instagram reach?

Account Insights cover any period within the past 90 days, through presets of 7, 14 or 30 days, the previous month or 90 days, or a custom range. Individual reel insights stay available for up to two years after posting. If you want a longer record, write your monthly totals into a spreadsheet before they roll out of the 90-day window.
