Instagram reach is down in 2026 for some accounts and formats, not across the board. Socialinsider measured a 14% year-over-year fall in reach rate for brand pages, and Metricool found reach per post down 21.96% for single images while Reels reach rose 11.69%. Accounts posted about 24% more, and Instagram's originality rule moved recommendations towards original posts, so photos, repost accounts and recycled files carry the losses.
Why is Instagram reach down in 2026? The published data says it is down for some accounts and formats, not across the board: Socialinsider measured a 14% year-over-year fall in reach rate for brand pages, and Metricool found reach per post down 21.96% for single-image posts while Reels reach rose 11.69%. Underneath that, accounts published about 24% more, and Instagram moved recommendations towards original posts, which it says now make up 75% of recommendations in the US.
Sources read in October 2026: Socialinsider's reach study (September 2026), Metricool's 2026 Instagram Study (June 2026) and Net Influencer's report of it, Instagram's originality update, reach tips and creator FAQ, and the Help Center pages on reels you may see less often and recommendations. We collected no data of our own; every number below is someone else's, with its sample beside it.
This is the platform-level view inside our Instagram growth playbook. If you want to find the cause on your own account, why your Instagram reach dropped works through 14 causes in order. This page answers the earlier question: is reach down in general, for whom, and what did Instagram change.
Why is Instagram reach down in 2026? The findings
- Brand pages reach a smaller share of their followers. Socialinsider puts Instagram's average reach rate at 4.90% and calls it a 14% year-over-year decrease.
- The fall is concentrated in photos. Metricool measured reach per post down 21.96% for single images and down 2% for Stories, with Reels up 11.69%.
- More posts are competing. Accounts in Metricool's sample published 24.04% more, and 35% more reels.
- Recommendations favour original posts. Instagram says 75% of recommendations in the US now come from original posts, and accounts that mainly repost have left recommendations.
- Size works against you. In Socialinsider's data, pages with 1,000 to 5,000 followers reach 6.65% of them per post; pages with 100,000 to 1 million reach 3.50%.
- Brand pages overall: reach rate down 14% year over year (Socialinsider)
- Single-image posts: reach per post down 21.96% (Metricool)
- Stories: reach down 2% (Metricool)
- Accounts that mainly repost: out of recommendations (Instagram)

- Reels: reach per post up 11.69% (Metricool)
- Carousels: more than double the reach of a single image (Metricool)
- Small pages: 6.65% reach rate at 1,000 to 5,000 followers (Socialinsider)
- Original posts: 75% of US recommendations (Instagram)
- Views across all formats: up 26.56% (Metricool)

Two third-party studies and one platform statement, read against each other. The studies come from analytics companies measuring their own customers, so each sample is described here before its numbers are used.
| Source | Published | Sample | Compared | Reach finding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Socialinsider, reach study | September 3, 2026 | 872,075 Facebook and Instagram posts by brand pages active from January 2025 to August 2026 | Year over year | Instagram reach rate averages 4.90%, a 14% decrease |
| Metricool, 2026 Instagram Study | June 16, 2026 | 24,364,803 posts from 375,118 accounts worldwide | January and February 2026 against the same months of 2025, averages per post | Single-image reach down 21.96%; Reels reach up 11.69%; Stories reach down 2% |
| Instagram, originality update | April 30, 2026 | Instagram's own figure; no method published | Not stated | 75% of recommendations in the US come from original posts |
Reach rate in the Socialinsider study is total reach divided by total followers. Metricool's figures are averages per post. Those are different measures: one can fall because follower counts grew, the other because each post was shown to fewer people. They agree on direction for photos and brand content, which is why we put them side by side.
Reach by format: photos fell, Reels did not
The clearest finding is that "reach is down" depends on what you post. Metricool compared January and February 2026 with the same two months of 2025.
| Format | Reach per post | Other changes | Posts published |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reels | Up 11.69% | Views up 1.69%; engagement rate up 24.76%; average watch time 8.5 seconds, from 4 | Up 35% |
| Carousels | No year-over-year figure; more than double a single image's reach | About nine times the saves of a single image | Up 24% |
| Single-image posts | Down 21.96% | Interactions down 25.41% | Up 12% |
| Stories | Down 2% | Replies up 88% | Not given |
| All formats | Not given | Views up 26.56%; interactions up 19.25% | Up 24.04% |
Source: Metricool, 2026 Instagram Study, published June 16, 2026. The single-image, all-format and publishing figures are from Metricool's press release; the Reels and Stories reach figures are as reported by Net Influencer from the full study.
Read the last row with the first. Overall views rose by about a quarter while views per reel rose 1.69%. Metricool does not break down where the rest came from, but its publishing figures point at mix and volume: 35% more reels and 24% more carousels, the two formats that reach furthest. An account that kept posting photos at its old pace was standing still in a feed that had sped up around it. For choosing between formats on your own account, see carousel vs reels reach.
Reach by account size: bigger pages reach a smaller share
Reach rate falls as follower count rises. Socialinsider's data shows the pattern without explaining it. Our reading is that a ranked feed shows each post to the followers most likely to respond, and that share shrinks as an audience gets larger and less uniform.

If your account grew this year, part of a falling reach rate is arithmetic. Compare viewers per post, not reach as a percentage of followers, before you conclude anything. Reach vs views vs impressions explains which number is which now that Insights labels reach as viewers.
The Instagram unoriginal content penalty: what Instagram says changed
The studies show where reach moved. Instagram's own announcements explain one reason it moved: recommendations were pointed at original work, in steps.
- Feb 2021Recycled reels recommended less
Instagram says reels visibly recycled from other apps, with logos or watermarks, will be less discoverable.
- May 2023Reach tips name reposts and watermarks
On a page dated May 31, 2023: less likely to be recommended are reposts of a reel already on Instagram, noticeable watermarks and accounts that regularly reshare others' content.
- 2024Originality protections for reels
The protections Instagram later describes as "introduced to reels in 2024".
- Apr 30, 2026Photos and carousels included
Accounts that mainly post unoriginal content leave recommendations until most of a rolling 30 days is original.
- Oct 2026Where it stands
Borders, logos, watermarks and non-original reels are still on the Help Center's "see less often" list.

- Original posts75%
- Everything else25%
Instagram gave the 75% figure; the remainder is simple subtraction. Source: Instagram for Creators, originality update, April 30, 2026
The 2021 step was reported by The Verge at the time; the rest is on Instagram's own pages. The rule works at two levels, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion.
| Instagram source | What it says | Acts on |
|---|---|---|
| Help Center, reels you may see less often | Reels that "contain borders, logos, or watermarks" or "are not original videos" | Each reel |
| Reach tips for creators | "We're less likely to recommend reposts of a reel that's already on Instagram, content with noticeable watermarks" | Each reel |
| Creator FAQ | "The third-party watermark on your reel may be affecting its reach." | Each reel |
| Recommendations Guidelines | "Unoriginal content that is largely repurposed from another source with only minor, immaterial edits" | Each post |
| Originality update, April 30, 2026 | Accounts that mainly post unoriginal content are no longer shown where Instagram recommends content | The whole account |
Instagram also says what does not rescue a re-upload. Adding a border, a watermark, subtitles or a credit in the caption is not a material edit. A material edit adds something beyond restating the original: on-image text that adds context, graphics that add new information, or a Remix that transforms it. For featuring other people's work it points to Collabs, Remix, the paid partnership label, Story shares and reposts.
One limit on what we can claim: neither study measures the originality rule. Socialinsider's article gives no cause for the decline, and Metricool only notes Instagram's focus on original content as context. The rule is a documented reason for some accounts to lose non-follower reach. It is not proven to be the reason the averages fell.
Instagram recycled content reach: five signs your posts are treated as unoriginal
Only the first sign is something Instagram confirms to you directly. The other four are the conditions its pages describe, turned into checks.
- Account Status shows a recommendation notice. Instagram says this is where you check your standing, remove unoriginal content or appeal.
- Most of what you posted in the last 30 days is other people's photos, clips or screenshots, even with credit.
- Your reels carry another app's logo, a border, or subtitles added to someone else's video as the only change.
- You re-upload reels that were already posted on Instagram, your own included.
- Non-follower reach fell on every post while follower reach held. Followers still see posts from an account that is not being recommended.
Signs two to five can each have other explanations, which is why Account Status comes first. If it is clear and your last 30 days are your own work, the originality rule is not your problem, and the cause is more likely one of the ordinary ones. The free Instagram reach drop diagnoser ranks those from your Insights numbers, and why your Instagram views are so low covers the view-count side.
The re-edit workflow that fixes it
The fix is not a trick for getting re-uploads past a filter. It is replacing them with posts that are yours, for long enough that the rolling 30 days turns over.
- 1Open Account Status
Note anything flagged. Remove flagged posts, or appeal the ones Instagram got wrong.
- 2Audit the last 30 days
Mark each post as yours, materially edited, or a re-upload. Count the third group.
- 3Stop the re-uploads today
The window rolls, so each new re-upload counts against the next 30 days.
- 4Move sharing to the native tools
Use Collabs, Remix, Story shares and the repost button for other people's work.
- 5Make edits material
Your own commentary on screen, graphics that add information, or a Remix that changes the meaning. Not a border or a credit.
- 6Upload clean files
Your editor's export, with no other app's watermark and no second round of compression.
- 7Hold for a full 30 days
Keep the majority original for the whole window before you judge non-follower reach.
- 8Re-check Account Status
Then compare non-follower viewers per post with the month before.
If your own cross-posted videos are the issue, the file-level fix is in should you post the same video on TikTok and Reels. What the ranking systems weigh once you are eligible again is in the Instagram algorithm guide, and the 2026 changes have their own lesson in our Instagram Ignited program.
Limitations: what this data cannot tell you
- No causation. None of these sources shows that the originality rule caused the averages to fall. The timing fits; that is all.
- Averages hide spread. Every figure quoted here is an average, and a small number of large accounts can move an average.
- Figures we left out. Metricool's wider Social Media Study, published in December 2025, lists a drop in Instagram reach among its findings. Its numbers sit behind a download form, so we do not quote them second-hand.
- Your account is not the average. The only baseline that matters for a decision is your own last 30 days against the 30 before.
What to do with this
Three decisions follow from the data, and none of them needs a new tactic.
- If you post mostly photos, the format lost reach in the largest sample we found. Move the same ideas into carousels and reels before you blame your content.
- If you repost or cross-post, run the five-sign test and fix the files. This is the only cause on this page that Instagram states as a rule.
- If neither applies, the platform-wide numbers are not your explanation. Go to the account-level diagnosis and look for what changed in your own posting.
Instagram reach in 2026: FAQ
Why is Instagram reach down in 2026?
The published data shows a decline for some accounts and formats, not all of them. Socialinsider measured a 14% year-over-year fall in reach rate for brand pages. Metricool found reach per post down 21.96% for single-image posts and down 2% for Stories, while Reels reach rose 11.69%. Over the same period accounts posted about 24% more, and Instagram moved recommendations towards original posts.
Is Instagram reach down for everyone?
No. In Metricool's comparison of early 2026 with early 2025, Reels gained reach per post while single-image posts lost it, and in Socialinsider's data pages with 1,000 to 5,000 followers reached 6.65% of their followers per post against 3.50% for pages with 100,000 to 1 million. An account that posts original reels can be growing while a photo-led or repost-led account shrinks.
What is Instagram's unoriginal content penalty?
It is a recommendation rule, not a strike. Since April 30, 2026, accounts that mainly post unoriginal content in photos, carousels or reels are no longer shown in the places where Instagram recommends content. Followers still see the posts. Instagram says an account becomes eligible again when most of its recently posted content is original in a 30-day period, calculated on a rolling basis.
Does recycled content get less reach on Instagram?
Instagram says so in three places. Its Help Center lists reels with borders, logos or watermarks, and reels that are not original, among reels you may see less often. Its reach tips say it is less likely to recommend reposts of a reel that is already on Instagram or content with noticeable watermarks. Its creator FAQ says a third-party watermark may be affecting a reel's reach.
How do I know if Instagram treats my content as unoriginal?
Account Status is the only direct answer: Instagram says creators can check their standing there, remove unoriginal content or appeal. The indirect signs are a last 30 days made up mostly of other people's material, reels carrying another app's watermark, re-uploads of reels already on Instagram, and non-follower reach that fell while follower reach held.
How long does it take to recover reach after the originality rule?
Instagram gives one figure: eligibility returns when most of what you recently posted is original in a 30-day period, on a rolling basis. It does not say how quickly recommendations pick up after that. In practice, plan for at least a month of original posts before you judge the result, and keep checking Account Status instead of inferring from one reel.
Did the change from impressions to views make reach look lower?
It changed the labels, not reach itself. Meta added views in January 2025 and retired impressions for newer content in April 2025, and Insights now labels reach as viewers. If you compare an old impressions figure with a current viewers figure, the new one will look smaller because impressions counted repeats. Compare viewers with accounts reached, and views with impressions.
The averages moved. Yours does not have to.
