Clone Your Voice: A Recording Setup That Sounds Like You

Clone your voice with AI: how much audio instant and professional cloning need, a recording checklist for room, mic and delivery, plus consent and verification.

Quick answer

To clone your voice well, record clean audio rather than a lot of it: about 1 to 2 minutes for instant cloning, 30 minutes to 3 hours for professional cloning. Use a pop filter, sit about two fists from the mic, dampen the room, and keep your delivery consistent. Professional clones must be your own verified voice.

To clone your voice with AI, record a short, clean sample in a quiet room, upload it to a voice cloning tool, and, for the best quality, train a professional clone on 30 minutes or more of your own verified voice. The quality of the clone depends far more on how you record than on how long you record: ElevenLabs recommends about 1 to 2 minutes for instant cloning and says more than 2 to 3 minutes adds little. This guide covers the recording setup that matters, the two cloning types, and the consent rules.

Checked October 2026 against ElevenLabs' docs on Instant Voice Cloning and Professional Voice Cloning, its help article on tips for good cloned voices, and its My Voices help page. Other tools have their own rules.

Cloning is one part of building an audio identity. For the bigger picture, including voice design, licensing and which tools to use, see our complete guide to voice cloning and AI voices.

Clone your voice: instant vs professional

Most voice tools offer two levels. An instant clone builds a voice from a short sample and is ready to use straight away. A professional clone trains a dedicated model on much more audio and takes hours to prepare, but captures more of your voice's detail.

ElevenLabs is candid that instant cloning is not an exact science: it has seen good results from 30-second samples and worse results from 10 minutes. Its guidance is that total clean runtime matters, not the number of files, and that consistent quality beats extra length. For instant cloning, it also notes that the method may struggle with uncommon accents or unique voices, which is where professional cloning helps.

How to record voice for cloning

A professional clone copies what it hears, including the room. ElevenLabs warns that if you upload samples with background noise, reverb, music or multiple speakers, the model will try to replicate those too. So the recording checklist is mostly about removing everything that is not your voice.

Recording checklist
  • Quiet room, phones on silent, fans and appliances off
  • Soft surfaces around you, or a thick duvet behind and around the mic
  • Pop filter in front of the microphone
  • About two fists between your mouth and the mic
  • One speaker only, no music underneath
  • Consistent volume and tone throughout
  • No long gaps of silence
  • Speak in the style you want the clone to use

You do not need a studio. ElevenLabs suggests an acoustically treated room, and adds that a temporary one made with a thick duvet or quilt works to dampen echoes. A wardrobe full of clothes does the same job. The aim is a dry, close sound, as if you were speaking into someone's ear.

Voice clone myself: the setup step by step

From room to working clone
  1. 1
    Prepare the room

Turn off noise sources, add soft surfaces, set up the pop filter.

  2. 2
Write a script in your real style

Short sentences you would actually say on camera, with some variety in emotion.

  3. 3
Record a test and listen on headphones

Check for hum, echo, clipping and mouth noise before recording the full take.

  4. 4
    Record the sample

About 1 to 2 minutes for instant; 30 minutes or more, in roughly 30-minute files, for professional.

  5. 5
Upload and, for professional clones, verify

Verify with the same mic and a similar tone to your samples.

  6. 6
    Test on a real script

Generate a caption you would post and compare it with your own recording.

For professional clones, ElevenLabs says you will be asked to verify your voice after uploading, and recommends doing it with the same or similar equipment and a delivery similar to your samples. If verification fails, you can retry after 24 hours or contact support. It also suggests splitting multiple hours of audio into files of about 30 minutes to make uploading easier.

Emotional range and consistency

A clone reproduces the range it hears. If your samples are all one flat tone, the clone will be flat. If they swing wildly between whispering and shouting, the clone may be unstable. The useful middle ground is natural variation within one consistent style: questions, emphasis and a little enthusiasm, recorded at a steady distance and volume.

Helps the clone
  • Natural conversational delivery
  • Some questions and emphasis
  • Steady mic distance and volume
  • One clean recording session
  • The language and accent you will use
Hurts the clone
  • Background music or other voices
  • Room echo and hum
  • Clips from different mics stitched together
  • Shouting, whispering or character voices
  • Long silences between lines

Can I clone my voice with AI for free?

On ElevenLabs, no. Its billing docs say cloning is only available on the Starter tier and above, and that the free plan offers custom voice slots for the Voice Design tool instead. Professional Voice Cloning needs the Creator plan or above: its docs list no professional clone slots on Free and Starter, and one slot on Creator and Pro. Check current plans before you subscribe, as tiers change.

Testing and maintaining your clone

Once the clone exists, test it on the scripts you will actually publish, not on a demo sentence. Generate three or four short captions in your normal style, then listen for the problems that show up in real use: odd emphasis on names or brand words, a rushed pace at the end of long sentences, and any background texture you did not notice in your samples.

  • Pronunciation: spell tricky names phonetically in the script, or rewrite the sentence so the word falls in an easier position.
  • Pacing: shorter sentences and punctuation give the voice natural pauses. Long run-on lines are where clones most often sound synthetic.
  • Style drift: if output sounds calmer or flatter than you, your samples probably were too. Record a new, livelier sample rather than fighting it with settings.
  • Artifacts: hum, hiss or echo in the output usually come from the training audio. Re-record in a quieter, more dampened space.

Keep your original recordings and script in a safe folder. If you change tools, move to a professional clone later, or your voice changes over time, you can retrain from the same clean source instead of starting over. And keep a short human-recorded reference clip: comparing the clone against your real voice every few months is the quickest way to notice drift.

Voice cloning is powerful enough that the rules matter. ElevenLabs says you must have permission to clone a voice with Instant Voice Cloning, and that Professional Voice Clones can only be of your own voice: even with consent, you cannot make a professional clone of someone else. If someone wants to share their voice, they create and verify a professional clone on their own account and share it with you.

Clone your voice: FAQ

How much audio do I need to clone my voice?

ElevenLabs recommends about 1 to 2 minutes of clean audio for Instant Voice Cloning and says more than 2 to 3 minutes yields little improvement and can even hurt stability. For Professional Voice Cloning it recommends at least 30 minutes, ideally closer to 2 to 3 hours. Total clean runtime matters, not the number of files. Checked October 2026.

Can I clone my voice with AI for free?

Not on ElevenLabs. Its billing docs say cloning is only available on the Starter tier and above; the free plan offers custom voice slots for its Voice Design tool instead. Other tools have their own plans, so check each one's current pricing. Free trials are worth using to test your recording setup before paying.

What is the difference between instant and professional voice cloning?

Instant Voice Cloning creates a usable voice from a minute or two of audio and is available immediately. Professional Voice Cloning trains a dedicated model on 30 minutes to about 3 hours of audio for higher fidelity; ElevenLabs says fine-tuning usually takes 3 to 6 hours. Professional clones require you to verify that the voice is yours.

Can I clone someone else's voice?

Only with permission, and not for every product. ElevenLabs says you must have permission to clone a voice with Instant Voice Cloning, and that Professional Voice Clones can only be made of your own voice, even with someone else's consent. If someone wants to share their voice, they create and verify it on their own account and share it with you.

What microphone setup do I need to record voice for cloning?

A decent microphone in a quiet, dampened room matters more than expensive gear. ElevenLabs recommends a pop filter, about two fists of distance from the mic, and an acoustically treated space, even a temporary one made with a thick duvet. Avoid background noise, reverb, music and other voices, because a professional clone copies those too.

Should I record in WAV for voice cloning?

It is not necessary. ElevenLabs says uncompressed formats such as WAV usually do not improve clone quality and can cause upload problems, and it advises MP3 at 128 kbps or above for instant cloning. What matters is how the audio was captured: clean, consistent and free of noise.
