Quick answer

On published 2026 prices, a self-serve AI photoshoot works out at about $1.83 per finished on-model image with labour included, against $67.70 built from soona's price list and from $95 per image at Squareshot, for the same 160-image job. Every rate is cited and the arithmetic is shown; the keep rate and time inputs are illustrative. Real shoots still win where the image must prove fit, fabric or a real person.

On published 2026 prices, the AI photoshoot vs real photoshoot cost gap is roughly forty to one or wider: about $1.83 per finished on-model image for a self-serve AI workflow with labour included, against $67.70 to $95 for the same image from a studio price list. The gap is real, but the two routes do not buy the same thing, and the AI figure only holds if you count rejected images and checking time honestly.

Every rate below is from a named source: the pricing pages of soona, Squareshot and FASHN (checked October 2026), Thumbtack's 2025 Photography Prices guide (updated January 2025), Peerspace's venue cost guide (May 2024) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics pages for photographers and models (May 2025 wage data).

Findings: AI photoshoot vs real photoshoot cost per image

  • Tool fees are the small part of an AI shoot. In the worked example, the subscription is $49 of a $292 total. The rest is the time to photograph inputs and check outputs.
  • People are the large part of a real shoot. On soona's price list, per-photo fees and model hours make up 97 percent of the bill.
  • The cheapest real route and the dearest differ by about 40 percent. $67.70 per image built from soona's list against $95 at Squareshot's from-price, with a freelance build in between.
  • Day rates only pay off at high throughput. Squareshot's eight-hour model day works out at $155 to $621 per image across its stated 12 to 48 images.
  • Licensing is a real-shoot cost that AI removes and replaces. No model usage fees, but new duties to check terms and disclose.

If you are pricing this work for clients rather than for your own store, the AI persona business playbook covers how to package and charge for it. This page is the cost evidence behind that conversation.

Method: one job, priced five ways

We priced the same job on each route: 40 products, four on-model images each, 160 finished images. We did not commission shoots or run a benchmark. Every unit price is taken from a public page, and every assumption is stated so you can replace it with your own.

  • Real-shoot throughput: six finished images an hour, the top of Squareshot's stated range of about 12 to 48 images in an eight-hour model day. That favours the real shoot. At that pace 160 images take 27 hours.
  • AI keep rate: one usable image in three generations. This is an illustrative input; measure your own.
  • AI time: five minutes to photograph each product as an input and one minute to check each generated image. Illustrative.
  • Labour rate for AI time: $21.47 an hour, the BLS median hourly wage for photographers in May 2025, used as a neutral stand-in for whoever does the work.

Photoshoot pricing 2026: the published rates

These are the unit prices everything else is built from. Studio price lists are the most useful public source, because freelance photographers and model agencies rarely publish rates.

Two caveats on reading it. "From" prices are floors: Squareshot lists add-ons such as steaming and wrinkle removal at $3 an item and faster delivery at 25 to 50 percent on top of the image price. And the BLS figures are what photographers and models earn as median hourly wages ($21.47 and $23.30 in May 2025), not what a client is billed, which is why we use them only to value in-house time.

Two variations move the total. Holding one model's face across the catalogue with a Face Reference triples the credits and needs FASHN's $99 Agency plan, which takes the job to $342.33, or $2.14 an image. A better keep rate cuts the largest line: at one keeper in two, checking drops from eight hours to just over five. Tool choice barely matters at this scale; our AI fashion model generator comparison has the per-image prices for six tools.

What these totals leave out, in the real shoot's favour and against it:

  • Not included: soona's $149 studio pass per booking for non-members, stylist time at $149 an hour, shipping products to the studio, and premium edits at $9 or more each on its lower tiers.
  • Not included in the freelance build: retouching, styling and licence fees. Thumbtack notes that commercial rates vary with licensing and post-production. The model rate is soona's published one, used because agencies do not publish theirs.
  • Product-only shots are far cheaper. Without a model, soona's $39 per photo or Squareshot's from-$50 per image is the whole price, which is why many stores photograph flat-lays and generate the model.

soona's own comparison table puts the average all-in cost of a traditional content shoot at $5,000 to $10,000. That is a vendor's claim about its competitors, so treat it as context rather than data, but it is in the same range as the totals above.

AI model vs real model cost

The model line is where the two routes differ most. A real model is paid by the hour or the day, needs hair and make-up, and comes with usage terms. An AI model costs credits.

The model line, on published prices
Real model
  • From $159 an hour for a full-body model (soona)
  • $299 per model for hair and make-up (soona)
  • From $95 per image or $2,950 for 4 hours, full service (Squareshot)
  • Usage may be time-limited; extensions are a priced add-on (Squareshot)
  • Shows real fit, movement and scale
AI model
  • No hourly fee
  • +2 credits per image to hold one face, about $0.13 to $0.19 (FASHN)
  • No usage period, but read the tool terms
  • Disclosure duties in some places and on some platforms
  • Shows a rendering of the garment, not a fitting

A note on what the saving is. The model fee pays a person for work, and the BLS puts the median hourly wage for models at $23.30. Removing that line is one of the largest savings in an AI shoot, and some jurisdictions now ask advertisers to say when the person in an ad is synthetic. If you base an AI model on a real person, their consent and a written agreement are part of the cost; our AI likeness rights guide explains why.

Revisions and licensing: the costs after the shoot

Revisions. A wrong AI image costs one more generation, 1 credit or about $0.07 to $0.10 on FASHN's Pro and Basic plans, plus a minute of checking. On a real shoot, soona prices additional variants or revisions after the initial order at $9 or more each, and anything that needs the model back on set is a new booking at the hourly rates above. That asymmetry matters more than the headline price for brands that change their minds.

Licensing. soona sells royalty-free models with unlimited usage rights and says you own the licence in perpetuity. Squareshot lists a model usage rights extension as an add-on whose price may vary, which tells you usage is not unlimited by default. With AI there is no model to license, but there are three things to check instead: the tool's terms on commercial use, the fact that copyright in AI-generated images varies by country, and disclosure rules where the image runs. The AI models in advertising rules guide covers the last one with official sources.

Where a real shoot still wins

Which route for which image
Standard garment
Either. A small real shoot is affordable here; AI is faster. Decide on brand grounds, not cost.
AI with a fidelity gate. Catalogue volume on simple garments is where the forty-to-one gap is real money.
Fit or fabric is the selling point
Real shoot. A handful of hero images of a tailored, sheer or textured piece is exactly what a studio is for.
Hybrid. Shoot the hero looks on a real model, then use AI only for colourways and variants of pieces already proven on a body.
Few images
Many images

Volume moves the cost. What the image has to prove decides whether cost is the right question.

Three further cases favour a real shoot whatever the volume. Marketplaces that require original photos of the item rule out generated product images. Video needs real movement to look right. And a real shoot produces by-products an AI shoot does not: behind-the-scenes footage, creator content and a relationship with people who will post about the brand. If social content is the goal, compare against creator rates instead; see what UGC creators charge and run both sides through the free AI UGC ad cost calculator.

Run the numbers for your own catalogue

Your own comparison in six steps
  1. 1
    Count finished images

Products times images per product. Separate on-model images from product-only ones.

  2. 2
    Get one real quote

Use a published price list or a local quote. Ask what is included: retouching, model usage period, revisions.

  3. 3
    Measure your AI keep rate

Run ten products through a tool on free credits and count usable images against generations.

  4. 4
    Time the work

Minutes per input photo and per output check. Multiply by what that person's hour costs you.

  5. 5
    Add the after-costs

Revisions, usage extensions and reshoots on one side; disclosure and real detail shots on the other.

  6. 6
    Decide image by image

Heroes and fit-critical pieces to the studio, the long tail to AI, using the matrix above.

The production method that makes the AI column achievable, from input shots to the fidelity gate, is in our AI model photos for ecommerce workflow. Building the consistent model that wears the whole catalogue, and using it across photo and video, is what the AI Influencers program teaches.

Limitations

  • These are list prices, mostly from the United States. Two studio price lists, one marketplace guide and one rental guide are not a market survey. Local quotes can be lower or much higher.
  • Sources have different dates. Thumbtack's guide was last updated in January 2025 and Peerspace's in May 2024; current rates may differ.
  • Throughput is an assumption. Six images an hour is the top of one studio's stated range. At the bottom of that range, real-shoot costs per image are four times higher.
  • The AI keep rate and time inputs are illustrative. We did not measure them across tools. A poor keep rate on difficult garments can multiply the AI cost several times, though it stays well below the real-shoot figures.
  • Quality is not measured here. This page compares cost. It does not show that an AI image sells as well as a real one.
  • The freelance model rate is a proxy. It uses soona's published hourly rate because agencies do not publish theirs.

AI photoshoot vs real photoshoot cost: FAQ

Is an AI photoshoot cheaper than a real photoshoot?

Yes, by a wide margin on published prices. In our worked example of 160 on-model images, a self-serve AI workflow came to about $1.83 per finished image including labour, against $67.70 built from soona's price list and from $95 per image at Squareshot. The inputs are stated and partly illustrative, and the two routes do not deliver the same thing: a real shoot shows true fit and fabric, an AI shoot shows a rendering of it.

How much does a product photoshoot cost in 2026?

On price lists checked in October 2026, soona charges $39 per photo plus a $149 studio pass per booking for non-members, and Squareshot lists product shoots from $50 per image or $750 for a two-hour shoot. Thumbtack's 2025 pricing guide puts commercial photography at an average flat rate of $440, with a range of $299 to $645 and an average of $198 an hour.

How much does a real model cost compared with an AI model?

soona lists full-body models from $159 an hour and hair and make-up at $299 per model. Squareshot lists model shoots from $95 per image, or $2,950 for a four-hour shoot. An AI model has no hourly fee: in FASHN, holding one face across images adds 2 credits per image, roughly $0.13 to $0.19 at its plan rates. Checked October 2026. The saving is the model fee; the trade is that no real person wore the garment.

What does an AI photoshoot actually cost per image?

The tool fee is the small part. Entry plans at FASHN, WeShop AI and Claid work out at roughly $0.07 to $0.12 per standard image at list price. Add the images you reject and the time spent photographing inputs and checking outputs, and our example reaches about $1.83 per finished image, of which the subscription is 17 percent. Checked October 2026; the time inputs are illustrative.

When is a real photoshoot still worth the money?

When the image has to prove something a rendering cannot: how a garment fits and moves on a body, how a sheer, sequinned or textured fabric really looks, or that a real person used the product. It is also the safer choice for campaign hero images, for marketplaces that require photos of the actual item, and for video where movement has to be right. Many brands shoot real heroes and fill the catalogue with AI.

Do AI photos have licensing costs?

There is no model usage fee because there is no model, which removes a recurring cost of real shoots. Squareshot lists a model usage rights extension as a priced add-on, while soona sells royalty-free models with a perpetual licence. With AI, read the tool's terms for commercial use, remember that copyright in AI outputs varies by country, and budget for disclosure where a law or platform requires it.

What do AI photoshoot cost comparisons usually leave out?

Four things. You still photograph every real product once as the input. A share of generations is rejected, so cost per usable image is higher than cost per image. Someone has to check each output against the garment. And some channels restrict or label AI imagery, which can mean keeping real photos anyway. Leave those out and AI looks close to free; include them and it is still far cheaper, but not free.
