Instagram engagement rate is a post's interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares) divided by an audience number and multiplied by 100. The four versions divide by followers, accounts reached, views or, for the daily rate, by followers across a whole day. Use followers to compare accounts and reach to judge your own content, and always say which one you used. Impressions were replaced by views in 2025.
Instagram engagement rate, explained in one line: the interactions a post receives (likes, comments, saves and shares) divided by an audience number (followers, accounts reached or views), multiplied by 100. Instagram does not publish an official formula, which is why the same post can honestly be reported at 2%, 3% and 4%: each figure uses a different denominator.
Definitions checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center page About Instagram insights, Meta's media insights reference and the Instagram Platform changelog. Instagram marks several of these metrics as estimated and in development.
How Instagram engagement rate works
Every version of the rate has the same top half. Instagram's Help Center describes interactions as the actions people take on your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares, and Meta's insights reference defines total interactions as those four, minus unlikes, unsaves and deleted comments. Reposts are reported as a separate metric and are not part of that total.
The bottom half is where the versions split. Followers is public and stable. Viewers, also called accounts reached, counts each account that saw the post once. Views counts every play or display, repeats included. For how these sit alongside every other number in Insights, see the Instagram analytics hub.
Instagram engagement rate explained: the four formulas
Pick the formula by the question you are answering, then keep it fixed. A rate only means something next to another rate calculated the same way.
| Formula | Calculation | Use it when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| By followers | Interactions ÷ followers × 100 | Media kits, brand briefs and comparing accounts; most industry reports use it | Ignores how many people saw the post. A reel that reaches non-followers inflates it. |
| By reach | Interactions ÷ accounts reached × 100 | Judging your own posts against each other | Reach is private to the account owner, so you cannot compare with other accounts. |
| By views | Interactions ÷ views × 100 | Reels and video, and anywhere a tool used to ask for impressions | Repeat views enlarge the denominator, so this gives the lowest figure of the three. |
| Daily | All interactions in one day ÷ followers × 100 | Tracking account health over weeks, whatever your posting pace | Mixes old and new posts, so it says nothing about any single post. |
The third row used to be "by impressions". Meta retired that metric, so anything that still asks for impressions, including older spreadsheets and media kit templates, now takes views.
- Jan 21, 2025Views arrives
Meta adds views to media and account insights and announces the end of impressions and plays.
- Apr 21, 2025Impressions stops returning
Requests for impressions on media created on or after July 2, 2024 return an error. Older media can still return it on older API versions.
- Dec 3, 2025Skip rate and reposts added
Two new media metrics appear, both reported separately from total interactions.

How to calculate Instagram engagement rate from your Insights
You need four counts and one audience number, all from the post's own insights screen. Insights are available on public accounts, and saves, shares and reach are visible only to the account owner.
- 1Open the post and tap View insights
Wait until the post is at least a few days old so the counts have settled.
- 2Write down likes, comments, saves and shares
These are the interactions. Add them into one total.
- 3Choose one denominator
Followers from your profile, or viewers or views from the same insights screen.
- 4Divide and multiply by 100
Interactions divided by the denominator, times 100, gives the rate as a percentage.
- 5Record which formula you used
Write "by reach" or "by followers" next to the number every time.
- 6Repeat for your last ten posts
One post tells you little. The median of ten is your baseline.
Our free Instagram engagement rate calculator runs the three per-post formulas from the same inputs and shows them side by side. For the daily rate, enter a full day's interactions with the followers option selected.
Worked example: one post, four answers
Nothing about the post changed between those four figures. This is why a number quoted without its formula is close to meaningless, and why two creators comparing "engagement rates" are often comparing different things. For what counts as high or low under each formula, see what is a good engagement rate on Instagram, which sorts the 2026 benchmarks by follower count, niche and format. To weigh the actions inside the total against each other, read saves vs likes.
Engagement rate vs the numbers it gets confused with
Two labels in Insights sound alike and count different things. Interactions counts actions. Accounts engaged counts people. The formulas above use interactions.
- Counts actions: likes, comments, saves, shares
- One person can add several
- The numerator in every engagement rate formula
- Higher than accounts engaged on most posts
- Counts unique accounts that interacted
- One person counts once
- Comes with demographics once you engage over 100 accounts
- Useful for seeing who responds, not how much
Engagement rate is also not what Instagram ranks on. The Instagram for Creators FAQ says distribution depends most on "how much engagement per viewer the content has received", through actions such as watch time, sharing, following, liking, commenting and profile visits. The by-reach formula is the closest figure you can calculate yourself, but it leaves out watch time, so treat it as a health check and not a prediction.
| Related term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Interactions | The actions people take on your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares |
| Accounts engaged | The number of unique accounts that interacted with your content |
| Viewers (accounts reached) | Unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once |
| Views | The number of times your content was played or displayed, repeats included |
| Reach rate | Accounts reached divided by followers; a distribution measure, not an engagement one |
| Skip rate | The share of a reel's initial views where the viewer skipped within the first 3 seconds |
Before you quote an engagement rate
- Name the formula: by followers, by reach, by views or daily
- Compare posts of the same format; reels and carousels behave differently
- Measure each post at the same age, for example seven days after posting
- Use the median of your last ten posts, not your best one
- Leave out posts lifted by paid boosts or engagement groups
The last check matters more than it looks: traded likes and comments raise the rate while telling you nothing about real viewers, which is one reason engagement pods backfire. If the rate is falling because fewer people see your posts at all, that is a reach problem, and why Instagram reach is down lists the 14 causes in the order to check them. And when you want the rate to feed a weekly decision about what to post next, that review is part of the analytics module in our Instagram Ignited program.
Instagram engagement rate: FAQ
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
Add a post's likes, comments, saves and shares, divide the total by followers, accounts reached or views, and multiply by 100. A post with 394 interactions on an account with 12,500 followers has a rate of 3.15% by followers. The same post divided by reach or views gives a different figure, so always state which denominator you used.
What is the engagement rate formula?
There are four in common use. By followers: interactions divided by followers, times 100. By reach: interactions divided by accounts reached, times 100. By views: interactions divided by views, times 100; this replaced the old impressions version. Daily: all interactions the account received in a day divided by followers, times 100. The numerator stays the same and only the denominator changes.
Should I calculate engagement rate by followers or by reach?
Use followers when someone outside the account needs to compare you with others, such as a brand reading a media kit, because follower counts are public and most industry reports use them. Use reach when you are judging your own content, because it measures how the people who actually saw the post responded. Do not mix the two in one comparison.
Why can I not find impressions on Instagram any more?
Meta replaced impressions and plays with views. Its developer changelog introduced the views metric on January 21, 2025 and says requests for impressions on media created on or after July 2, 2024 return an error from April 21, 2025. Views count every time content is played or displayed, repeats included, so a rate by views plays the role the rate by impressions used to.
Do saves and shares count towards engagement rate?
Yes, if you have them. Instagram's Help Center describes interactions as actions such as likes, comments, saves and shares, and Meta's insights reference defines total interactions the same way. Saves and shares are only visible to the account owner, so rates calculated from public data for someone else's account usually count likes and comments alone and come out lower.
Can an Instagram engagement rate be over 100%?
Yes, by followers. Interactions are actions, not people: one person can like, save and share the same post, and people who do not follow you can interact with it too. A small account whose reel travels widely can collect more interactions than it has followers. By reach or views it is possible in theory but almost never happens, so check your inputs if you see it.
You have the number. Now decide what to post next.
Instagram Ignited, included in All Access, turns rates like this one into a weekly review: which hooks held, which posts got sent and what to make more of. The other three programs, live coaching and the private community come in the same subscription.
