TikTok Shop digital products are restricted: the US policy prohibits virtual or digital products unless approved under the Virtual Goods category, which is invite-only and covers items like software, courses and gift cards, not ebooks or templates. Most creators sell digital products on TikTok by promoting them in videos and sending viewers to a link-in-bio store. This guide covers both routes using TikTok's own policy pages.
TikTok Shop digital products are only allowed for invite-only sellers approved under TikTok's Virtual Goods category; everyone else is prohibited from listing them. That approved list covers software, games, prepaid subscriptions, online courses, gift cards and tickets, so most creators selling ebooks, templates or presets on TikTok promote them in videos and take the sale through a store linked from their profile.
Policy details checked in October 2026 against TikTok Shop Seller Center (US): the Prohibited Products Policy and Virtual Goods Requirements; TikTok Shop UK's unsupported products guide; and TikTok's Business Help Center on account entitlements. TikTok updates these pages often and rules differ by country, so read the version for your market before you list.
Most TikTok Shop guides are written for physical sellers: samples, affiliates, shipping. Digital sellers get a short line, if any. This guide does the opposite. It sets out exactly what TikTok Shop allows for digital goods, why the answer is "no" for most creators, and how the link-in-bio route works instead. It sits under our digital product marketing playbook, which maps every channel; this page goes deep on TikTok.
Can you sell digital products on TikTok Shop?
In the US, only with approval. The Prohibited Products Policy has a category called Services and Virtual Products, and it opens with the rule that matters: "Virtual or digital products are prohibited unless approved for sale under the Virtual Goods category." The same policy lists Virtual Goods among the items permitted only through an invite-only process. The policy also notes that physical products such as DVDs with digital content are permitted, which is a physical product, not a download.
The Virtual Goods Requirements confirm it from the other side: "Selling virtual goods is limited to invite-only sellers. Sellers must receive approval before listing or offering any virtual goods on TikTok Shop." Virtual goods are also subject to the Restricted Products Policy, so an approved seller follows both documents.
Outside the US the picture is similar or stricter. TikTok Shop UK's unsupported products guide lists digital downloads (books, magazines, newspapers, music, videos) and memberships, services, warranties or subscriptions as unsupported, checked October 2026. Check your own market's Seller Center before planning around TikTok Shop.
TikTok Shop digital downloads: what the Virtual Goods category allows
For approved US sellers, the Virtual Goods Requirements list these product types, each with its own delivery rule. TikTok calls the list non-exhaustive.
| Permitted virtual goods (US, invite-only) | Key requirement |
|---|---|
| Software and applications | Delivered by license key, activation code or secure download |
| Digital games and in-game content | Redemption code or account transfer; add-ons must need the base game |
| Game and other digital subscriptions | Prepaid for a defined period; no recurring auto-billing |
| Online courses | Delivered digitally; claims must be realistic; creator visible in course clips |
| Virtual gift cards | Delivered electronically; approved platforms or services only |
| Virtual and concert tickets | Event details stated; concert tickets carry extra fee disclosures |

Three general rules apply to all of them: virtual goods must be accurately described, delivered through secure digital fulfilment, and sellers must comply with consumer protection laws and digital goods licensing requirements. The prohibited virtual goods list includes unlicensed gambling games and related in-game currency bundles, and stored-value components such as course credits, loadable tickets and gift certificates.
Notice what is missing. Ebooks, templates, Notion pages, Lightroom presets, printables and stock assets, the products most creators make, are not named on the permitted list. Because the list is non-exhaustive, the only way to know whether a specific product qualifies is to be invited and apply; there is no published route to list a PDF.
The course rules, if you are invited
Online courses are the one creator-friendly category on the list, and TikTok attaches four extra requirements to them:
- Screenshots and promos must match the delivered course: content, format, access duration and materials
- Outcome claims must be realistic, substantiated and not misleading
- Unverifiable promises such as job placement or income growth are not permitted
- Stored-value components such as course credits and gift certificates are not permitted
- When course clips promote a listing, the creator must stay clearly visible on screen
These rules are worth following everywhere, not just on TikTok Shop. A course page that promises outcomes it cannot back up is a refund problem on any platform.
Should you apply for the Virtual Goods category?
Approval is by invitation, so for most creators the question answers itself. But if you are invited, or you already run a TikTok Shop for physical products and your account manager raises it, weigh it on product fit rather than on the appeal of in-app checkout.
- Your product is on the permitted list: software, a course, a prepaid subscription
- You can deliver by license key, code or secure download
- Your promos can show exactly what the buyer gets
- You are happy to follow TikTok Shop policies on every listing
- You sell ebooks, templates, presets or printables
- You want recurring billing for a membership
- You want the customer email and the checkout on your own store
- You are not invited to the Virtual Goods category
One more consideration: an approved listing sits inside TikTok's rules for content, claims and delivery, which TikTok can change. A link-in-bio store still has to follow TikTok's Community Guidelines in the videos that promote it, but the checkout, the refund policy and the customer relationship sit with you and your storefront. For many creators that independence is worth the extra tap.
If you do apply, prepare the same things you would for any restricted category: a clear product description, proof that you own or license what you sell, a delivery method that matches the rule for your product type, and promotional content that shows the real product. TikTok's policy pages do not publish approval criteria or timelines for Virtual Goods, so treat the invitation as the first step and the requirements table above as the minimum.
How to sell digital products on TikTok without TikTok Shop
Because TikTok Shop is closed to most digital products, creators who sell on TikTok use TikTok as the attention channel and a separate store as the checkout. The system has four parts, and TikTok only owns the first two.
- 01Content
Short videos that show the problem the product solves, or a preview of the product itself.
- 02Profile
A bio line that names the product and a profile link to your store.
- 03Storefront
Beacons, Stan Store, Gumroad, Shopify or similar handles checkout and file delivery.
- 04Email
Buyers and free-download signups join a list you own, so the next launch does not depend on the algorithm.
The routes compare like this, based on the policies above and on how link-in-bio storefronts generally work:
| TikTok Shop (Virtual Goods) | Link-in-bio store | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Invite-only sellers approved for Virtual Goods | Any account that can show a profile link |
| Ebooks, templates, presets | Not on the US permitted list | Yes, on most storefronts |
| Checkout | Inside TikTok | On the storefront, one tap away |
| Recurring memberships | Prepaid only; no auto-billing | Depends on the storefront plan |
| Rules to follow | TikTok Shop policies plus Community Guidelines | Community Guidelines plus the storefront terms |
Getting a link on your TikTok profile
The link-in-bio route needs a link people can tap. TikTok's Business Help Center article on account entitlements (last updated May 2026, checked October 2026) describes three levels for accounts using its business tools:
- General TikTok Account: business information and the bio-link cannot be displayed.
- TikTok Account with Advanced Access: granted when you link the account to a TikTok for Business account or an unverified Business Center. You can edit the bio-link and business information, but they are not displayed on the profile.
- Verified Business Account: granted after business verification. It unlocks public display of the business profile, plus organic conversion anchors that attach a destination link to videos or the profile.
Two practical notes. First, TikTok's business tools require the account owner to be over 18 to link a TikTok account to TikTok for Business, per its linking troubleshooting page. Second, you will see a follower threshold quoted widely for personal accounts; we could not confirm a current figure on an official TikTok page, so do not plan around a number. Open Edit profile and look for the Website field: if it is there, your account can show a link today.
- 1Check Edit profile
If a Website field appears, add your store link. Expected result: the link shows under your bio.
- 2If it does not, review business options
TikTok's entitlements page explains Advanced Access and business verification.
- 3Write a bio line that names the product
Say what it is and who it is for, so the link has context.
- 4Point the link at one page
A store page or a single product beats a menu of ten links for a new account.
- 5Test it on a phone
Tap the link from your own profile and complete checkout with a test or $0 product.
Choosing the storefront behind the link
The store is where the money changes hands, so its fees and delivery matter more than anything on TikTok's side. Our Beacons AI store review covers the free plan and when a flat-fee plan like Stan Store costs less, and the Sellfy vs Gumroad comparison covers flat-fee against per-sale pricing. If you already run a Shopify store, our guide to the Shopify digital downloads app options models delivery costs at three order volumes.
Whatever you choose, keep the product and the customer list portable. TikTok can change what a profile link does at any time, and storefronts change pricing; a list of buyers you can email is the one asset neither change takes away.
TikTok digital products in 2026: what to post
The policy work is the easy part. Selling digital products on TikTok comes down to content that makes the product feel obvious. From running creator accounts at agency scale, the formats that suit digital products are the ones that show the product working, not ones that describe it:
- The before and after. A messy spreadsheet, then your template filled in. A flat photo, then your preset applied.
- The walkthrough. Screen-record thirty seconds of using the product to solve one small, specific problem.
- The mistake list. Three mistakes your buyer makes, with the product as the fix for the last one.
- The free piece. Give one page of the product away as a $0 download and let the full version sit beside it in the store.
- The answer video. Reply to a comment question with a video that answers it fully, then mention where the deeper version lives.

- 1Week 1: product and store
One product, one store page, one $0 sample. Test checkout on a phone.
- 2Week 1: profile
Bio line, profile link, and a pinned video that explains the product.
- 3Weeks 2 to 3: content
Post the formats above daily if you can; note which videos send profile visits.
- 4Week 3: email
Send the free-sample list one useful email and one product email.
- 5Week 4: review
Keep the two formats that drove the most store visits; drop the rest.
Mistakes that get digital sellers in trouble on TikTok
- Listing a PDF on TikTok Shop as a physical item. The policy treats digital products as prohibited unless approved; mislabelling a listing is how accounts lose selling access.
- Income claims in the video. TikTok bans unverifiable income claims for courses on TikTok Shop; it is a good rule for every video that points to a product.
- Recurring billing through TikTok Shop. Approved subscriptions must be prepaid; auto-billing is not permitted.
- A link page with ten options. A new viewer needs one obvious next step.
- No email capture. Views come and go; a buyer list stays.

TikTok Shop and digital products: FAQ
Can you sell digital products on TikTok Shop?
Only with approval. TikTok Shop's US Prohibited Products Policy says virtual or digital products are prohibited unless approved for sale under the Virtual Goods category, and its Virtual Goods Requirements say selling virtual goods is limited to invite-only sellers who receive approval before listing. Most creators cannot list an ebook or template there, so they sell through a store linked from their profile. Checked October 2026.
What digital goods does TikTok Shop allow?
For invite-only US sellers, the Virtual Goods Requirements list software and applications, digital games, in-game content, prepaid game and other digital subscriptions, online courses, virtual gift cards, virtual tickets and concert tickets. The list is described as non-exhaustive. Subscriptions must be prepaid, with no recurring auto-billing, and stored-value items such as course credits are prohibited. Checked October 2026.
Can I sell ebooks or templates on TikTok Shop?
Not by default. Ebooks, templates, presets and printables are not named on the US list of permitted virtual goods, and all virtual goods need invite-only approval. TikTok Shop UK's unsupported products guide lists digital downloads such as books, magazines, music and videos as unsupported. The usual route is to promote the product in videos and sell it through a link-in-bio store. Checked October 2026.
Can I sell an online course on TikTok Shop?
Online courses are on the US list of permitted virtual goods, but only for invite-only sellers approved for the category. TikTok adds course-specific rules: promotional content must match the delivered course, outcome claims must be realistic and substantiated, income or job claims that cannot be verified are not allowed, and the creator must stay visible on screen when course clips promote a listing. Checked October 2026.
How do creators sell digital products on TikTok without TikTok Shop?
They post content that shows the problem the product solves, point viewers to the link on their profile, and send them to a storefront such as Beacons, Stan Store, Gumroad or Shopify that handles checkout and file delivery. TikTok's business help center ties a publicly displayed profile link to account entitlements, so check that your account can show one before building the plan around it. Checked October 2026.
What happens if I list a prohibited digital product on TikTok Shop?
TikTok Shop's Prohibited Products Policy lists the enforcement actions it may take, including deducting Account Health Rating points, removing product listings, revoking access to offer products for sale and issuing refunds to customers. It also says products clearly listed as prohibited cannot be approved on appeal. Apply for the Virtual Goods category instead of listing first. Checked October 2026.
