AI coloring pages take five stages: prompt for black line art, curate with a test print, convert each page to pure black and white, trace it to vector or upscale it, and assemble the set. The conversion is what makes a page printable. For a book, lock one anchor page and reuse it as a style reference, and declare the AI-generated art on KDP and in Etsy listing descriptions.
AI coloring pages are made in five stages: prompt an image generator for black line art on white, keep only the pages that survive a test print, convert each one to pure black and white, trace it to vector or upscale it to print size, and assemble the set as a PDF. The generation takes minutes. The conversion in the middle is what turns a picture of line art into a page someone can color, and it is the stage most tutorials leave out.
Tool features and platform rules checked October 2026 against Midjourney's Version and Style Reference pages and Terms of Service, Inkscape's tracing tutorial, KDP's content guidelines and paperback submission guidelines, Etsy's stance on AI creations and the US Copyright Office's report on AI and copyrightability. Prompts below are starting points to adapt, not tested recipes with a promised result.
By the end you will have a repeatable pipeline: a prompt skeleton, a conversion routine you can run on every page, a way to hold one style across 30 or 50 designs, and the right disclosure for where you sell. Coloring pages are one of several products AI can help build; our guide to AI tools for digital products covers the full stack and what each tool costs.
What you need before you start
- An image generator whose terms let you sell what you make
- An image editor with a threshold or levels control
- A vector tool: Inkscape is free, Illustrator has Image Trace
- A layout tool that exports PDF at US Letter and A4
- A printer and plain paper for test prints
- A niche spec: who colors, line weight, number of designs
The last item saves the most time. A bold-and-easy page for seniors and a fine mandala need different prompts, different thresholds and different line weights, so decide which you are making first. Our breakdown of coloring page niches gives the spec for each buyer group.
AI coloring pages: the prompt-to-printable pipeline
Every page goes through the same six stations. Skipping one is how sets end up with pages that look fine on screen and print badly.
- 01Prompt
Black line art on white, no shading, fixed wording.
- 02Curate
Print at full size. Reject anything muddy or cramped.
- 03Threshold
Force every pixel to pure black or pure white.
- 04Vectorise
Trace to paths so lines stay sharp at any size.
- 05Repair
Close gaps, delete specks, remove tiny details.
- 06Assemble
Place on the page with margins and export the PDF.
Step 1: prompts for Midjourney coloring pages
A good coloring prompt says what the image is, what it is drawn with and what must be absent. Keep the wording fixed and change only the subject, so that pages from the same prompt family look related. This example targets a bold page for young children or a bold-and-easy adult book:
coloring page of a friendly garden snail on a leaf, clean black line art on a pure white background, thick uniform outlines, large closed shapes, simple composition, no shading, no gray, no color --ar 17:22 --raw --no shading, gradient, color, text
The aspect ratio --ar 17:22 is 8.5 by 11 in whole numbers. --raw turns off Midjourney's default styling, which otherwise adds texture and tone you will only have to remove. For fine work, change the line description and the shape of the canvas:
coloring page, symmetrical floral mandala, clean thin black line art on a pure white background, even line weight, every shape closed, open spaces large enough to color, no shading, no solid black fills --ar 1:1 --raw --no shading, gradient, color, text
The examples use Midjourney syntax, and its current default model is V8.2, released July 24, 2026. The same structure works in any image generator that accepts a text description: subject, "black line art on a white background", and a list of what to leave out. For parameter detail, see our Midjourney prompts guide.
Expected result: a grid of candidates in which roughly the right shapes exist. They will not be print-ready. Look for composition and line character; everything else gets fixed later.
Step 2: curate with a test print
Print each candidate at 100% on plain paper before it enters the set. Reject pages with muddy areas, crowded detail, anatomy that reads wrong at arm's length, or anything that resembles a known character. Expect to discard more than you keep. A strict cut here is cheaper than repairing weak pages later.
Steps 3 to 5: the line-art conversion most guides skip
A generated image is a photograph of line art, not line art. It has soft edges, faint tone and too few pixels. Midjourney's HD images are 2048 pixels, and a US Letter page at 300 DPI needs 2550 by 3300. Conversion fixes the edges, the tone and the size in one pass.
| Problem in the raw image | What happens in print | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Soft grey edges | Lines print fuzzy instead of crisp | Threshold to pure black and white |
| Shading and gradients | Grey patches where the colorist wants white | Ask for none in the prompt, then threshold and erase what survives |
| Open shapes | Nothing enclosed to color in | Close the gaps by hand after tracing |
| Tiny details | Spaces smaller than a pencil tip cannot be colored | Delete or merge them; aim for 2 mm or more |
| Low resolution | A 2048 px image is short of the 2550 x 3300 px a Letter page needs at 300 DPI | Trace to vector, or upscale before thresholding |
| Stray text | Letters can come out misspelled or malformed | Erase it and set real type in the layout tool |
| Art to the image edge | Home printers and book trimming cut it off | Scale the art inside a margin |
- 1Desaturate
Remove all color so only light and dark remain.
- 2Threshold
Push every pixel to pure black or pure white. Raise the level until lines are solid; lower it if detail floods.
- 3Clean the raster
Erase specks, leftover shading and any stray text.
- 4Trace to vector
In Inkscape: select the image, then Path, Trace Bitmap, Brightness Cutoff.
- 5Simplify the paths
Path, Simplify reduces nodes and smooths wobble. Use it lightly on fine detail.
- 6Close and repair
Join open shapes, delete islands, merge spaces under about 2 mm.
- 7Check line weight
Keep printed lines at 0.75 pt or thicker, which is KDP's stated minimum.
- 8Export
Save the vector master, then a PDF or a 300 DPI PNG at page size.
Inkscape's tracer opens from Path, then Trace Bitmap. Brightness Cutoff decides black or white by a threshold between 0 and 1, and the tutorial's advice is to start light and go darker until the output has the proportion you want. A second mode, centerline tracing, returns strokes instead of filled shapes. That matters for books: with strokes you can set one line width across every page.
Tracing will not finish the job, and Inkscape says so: the tracer is not "intended to produce a final product" but "a set of curves which you can use as a resource". Plan on a few minutes of hand repair per page. In Illustrator, Image Trace does the same job. For bold, simple art you can skip vectors entirely: upscale, threshold, clean, and export at page size.
- Grey, anti-aliased edges
- Faint shading and texture
- Open shapes and broken lines
- Detail too small to color
- 2048 px or less on the long side
- Art running to the edge
- Pure black lines on pure white
- No tone anywhere
- Every shape closed
- Smallest space about 2 mm or more
- Vector, or 2550 x 3300 px for Letter
- Art inside a margin
Expected result: a vector master for each page that prints with crisp, even lines at US Letter and A4, and still holds up if you later enlarge it for a poster.
Style consistency across a book-length set
Fifty pages that each look fine can still fail as a book if page 12 has hairlines and page 13 has marker-thick outlines. Consistency comes from fixing things once and reusing them.
- Finish one anchor page. Take a single design through the whole pipeline until its line weight and level of detail are exactly right.
- Use it as a style reference. Midjourney's
--srefapplies the look of a reference image, "like colors, medium, textures, or lighting", without copying its objects. Style weight,--sw, runs from 0 to 1000 with a default of 100. - Keep the prompt skeleton identical. Change the subject only. Midjourney's own advice with a style reference is to keep the text prompt simple and avoid style words that conflict with it.
- Pin the version. Midjourney's default model changed twice between June and July 2026. Add the version parameter to every prompt so a default change mid-project does not shift your line character.
- Reuse your settings. Same threshold level, same tracing mode, same simplify strength, same margins on every page.
- Review as a contact sheet. Put all pages on one screen as thumbnails. Outliers are obvious at that size; fix or cut them.

A consistent set is a product, but only if someone wants it. Our Digital Products program covers the part this tutorial cannot: validating the niche before you generate 50 pages, then pricing and launching the result.
AI-generated coloring book on KDP: the disclosure box, and the other rules
On KDP, a book built from generated pages is declared as AI-generated, however much you cleaned it. The content guidelines define AI-generated content as images "created by an AI-based tool" and add that it stays AI-generated "even if you applied substantial edits afterwards". Thresholding and tracing are edits. The cover counts too. AI-assisted, the category that needs no declaration, is for work you created yourself and then improved with AI.
| Who | The rule | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon KDP | Declare AI-generated images, cover and interior, when you publish or republish. Edited AI output still counts. | Declare any book built from generated pages |
| Etsy | Seller-prompted AI art is allowed. Sellers must disclose AI use in the listing description. Prompt bundles cannot be sold alone. | One clear line in every listing description |
| Midjourney | You own your assets "to the fullest extent possible under applicable law". Companies over $1,000,000 a year in revenue need Pro or Mega. Images are public by default. | Fine for selling; no privacy below Pro |
| US Copyright Office | Prompts alone do not provide sufficient control. Creative selection, arrangement and modifications by a human can be protected. | The raw generations are the weakest part of your claim |
Our KDP coloring book tutorial has the full decision table, along with trim size, bleed, margins and royalty bands. For Etsy packs, the limit is five files of 20MB each per listing, and our guide to selling printables on Etsy covers the listing itself. None of this is legal advice.
- Every page test-printed at 100% on plain paper
- Pure black and white only: no grey pixels, no tone
- No open shapes; no spaces too small to color
- Line weight consistent from the first page to the last
- No text the generator invented; any words set as real type
- Nothing that resembles a known character, logo or brand
- Art sits inside the margin on US Letter and A4
- Vector masters saved separately from the export files
- Settings note saved with the project
- AI use declared: on KDP at publish, on Etsy in the description
Troubleshooting
- Lines break up after thresholding. The level is too low or the source lines were too thin. Raise the threshold, or regenerate with "thick uniform outlines".
- The trace has thousands of nodes and edits slowly. Simplify the path, then repair. Inkscape notes the result is "a bit more approximate" but far easier to edit.
- Shading keeps coming back. Add it to the exclusions and say "no gray" in the prompt body. What survives is removed at the threshold step.
- Pages drift in style halfway through. Check that the version, aspect ratio and style reference are identical on every prompt, then re-run the outliers.
- Hands, paws or faces look wrong. Regenerate that subject or redraw the part by hand at the vector stage. Do not ship it and hope.
AI coloring pages: FAQ
How do I make AI coloring pages?
Prompt an image generator for black line art on a white background with no shading, pick the pages that survive a test print, convert each one to pure black and white, trace it to vector or upscale it to print size, close any open shapes, and assemble the set as a PDF. Generation takes minutes. The conversion and repair work is what makes a page printable.
What is a good prompt for Midjourney coloring pages?
Use a fixed skeleton and change only the subject: "coloring page of [subject], clean black line art on a pure white background, uniform outlines, closed shapes, no shading, no gray, no color", then add an aspect ratio such as --ar 17:22 for a Letter page and --raw to reduce default styling. Expect to retry; no prompt removes every grey patch or open line.
Why do AI coloring pages print blurry or grey?
Because the generator outputs a soft-edged picture, not line art. Edges are anti-aliased grey, shading survives as faint tone, and the file is too small for a full page: even a 2048 pixel image is short of the 2550 by 3300 pixels a Letter page needs at 300 DPI. Thresholding to pure black and white, then tracing to vector, fixes all three.
How do I keep one style across an AI coloring book?
Finish one anchor page first, then reuse it. In Midjourney, pass the anchor image as a style reference with --sref and keep the prompt wording identical apart from the subject. Fix the model version and aspect ratio for the whole book, apply the same threshold and tracing settings to every page, and review all pages as thumbnails on one sheet to remove outliers.
Can I sell AI-generated coloring pages?
Yes, with disclosure. Etsy allows art made from a seller's original prompts and says sellers must disclose in the listing description if an item is created with the use of AI. It does not allow selling prompt bundles on their own. Check your generator's terms too: Midjourney says you own the assets you create to the fullest extent possible under applicable law. Checked October 2026.
Do I have to declare an AI-generated coloring book on KDP?
Yes. KDP requires you to inform it of AI-generated images, including cover and interior artwork, when you publish a new book or edit and republish one. Its guidelines say content created by an AI tool is AI-generated even if you applied substantial edits afterwards, so cleaned-up and vectorised pages are still declared. Checked October 2026.
Do I own the copyright to AI coloring pages?
Not automatically in the United States. The US Copyright Office concluded in January 2025 that copyright does not extend to purely AI-generated material and that prompts alone do not provide sufficient control. It also said human authors can hold copyright in creative selection, arrangement and modifications of AI outputs. Treat this as general information, not legal advice.
