To make coloring pages to sell, draw original line art at 8.5 by 11 inches and 300 DPI in solid black, close every shape, trace to vector when you need to resize or even out line weight, and lay the set out in US Letter and A4. Use Canva for layout only, since its own line drawings cannot be resold as coloring pages. Print every page at full size before you list the pack.
To make coloring pages to sell, draw original line art on a 300 DPI canvas at 8.5 by 11 inches, keep every line solid black and every shape closed, lay the pages out with a margin in US Letter and A4, and export a PDF you have test-printed at full size. The drawing earns the click. How it prints decides what the buyer says about it afterwards.
Tool steps and platform rules checked October 2026 against the Procreate Handbook on creating a canvas and sharing, Procreate's articles on DPI and ColorDrop, Inkscape's tracing tutorial, Canva's pages on upload requirements and products for sale, KDP's paperback submission guidelines and Etsy's digital listings rules. Line weight ranges and margins are working practice, not platform rules.
This page covers one job: turning your own drawings into files that print clean and a pack that is ready to list. If you generate the art, use our AI coloring pages tutorial. If you want a bound book, use the KDP coloring book tutorial. For the wider process behind any product, see our guide to creating a digital product.
What you need before you start
- A niche spec: who colors, the line weight they need and how many pages
- A drawing tool that sets canvas size in inches and DPI. This tutorial uses Procreate; paper and a scanner also work
- Inkscape, free, if you plan to vectorize
- A layout tool that exports multi-page PDF at exact paper sizes. This tutorial uses Canva
- A printer, plain paper, a ruler and the pens your buyer would use
- Subjects that are yours: no characters, logos or brands
Settle the first item before you draw. A bold page for a four-year-old and a fine mandala need different lines, and our guide to coloring page niches gives the page count and line weight for each buyer group.
The print-clean line art spec
A coloring page prints clean when it meets eight conditions. Write them down as a spec sheet and hold every page in the set to it.
| Spec | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas | 8.5 x 11 in at 300 DPI (2550 x 3300 px) | Fills a Letter page with no enlarging. KDP's minimum for images is 300 DPI |
| Line color | Solid black on white | Grey or textured lines print lighter and uneven on home printers |
| Line weight | 0.75 pt at the very least; heavier for younger or less steady hands | KDP states a minimum thickness of 0.75 point, 0.01 in |
| Shapes | Every area fully closed | An open shape has no edge to color up to, and fill tools flood through the gap |
| Fills | No grey shading. Solid black only as small accents | KDP recommends at least 10% for grey fills. None at all is simpler and cleaner |
| Smallest space | About 2 mm across | Anything smaller is narrower than a pencil tip |
| Margin | About 0.5 in on every side | Home printers clip the edge, and A4 is narrower than Letter |
| Layout | One design per page, printed on one side | Markers soak through to whatever is on the back |
Line weight is the one sellers guess at. Do not guess: draw a test stroke, print it and measure it. One point is 1/72 of an inch, which at 300 DPI is about four pixels.
| Line weight | On paper | At 300 DPI | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.75 pt | 0.3 mm | 3 px | The floor. Fine detail in adult designs |
| 1.5 pt | 0.5 mm | 6 px | Detailed adult pages, upper end |
| 2 pt | 0.7 mm | 8 px | Standard kids pages, lower end |
| 3 pt | 1.1 mm | 13 px | Bold and easy, toddler pages |
| 4 pt | 1.4 mm | 17 px | Standard kids pages, upper end |
| 5 pt | 1.8 mm | 21 px | The heaviest bold-and-easy outline |
The uses in the last column are the working ranges from our niche guide: 3 to 5 points for bold-and-easy and toddler pages, 2 to 4 for standard kids pages, 0.75 to 1.5 for detailed adult work. Pick one weight for outlines and, at most, one lighter weight for interior detail, then keep both fixed across the set.
How to make coloring pages to sell: the pipeline
- 01Draw
Full-size canvas, solid black, one layer of lines.
- 02Close and clean
Fill-test every shape. Remove specks and grey.
- 03Export PNG
One file per page at 2550 x 3300 px.
- 04Vectorize
Optional. For resizing and even line weight.
- 05Lay out
Letter and A4, one design per page, inside a margin.
- 06Print, then package
Every page at 100% before it goes in a listing.
- 1Write the spec sheet
Buyer, outline weight, smallest space, page count.
- 2Set up the canvas
8.5 by 11 inches at 300 DPI, before the first stroke.
- 3Ink in solid black
A hard-edged brush on its own layer, sketch hidden.
- 4Run the closed-shape test
Drop a color into each area. A flood means a gap.
- 5Export each page as a PNG
Only visible layers export, so hide the sketch first.
- 6Vectorize if you need to
Trace in Inkscape, simplify, set one stroke width.
- 7Lay out and export the PDFs
One Letter file and one A4 file, 300 DPI, flattened.
- 8Test-print and package
Print, color a page with real pens, then build the listing files.
Step 2: set up the canvas
In Procreate's Gallery, tap the + icon, then the custom canvas icon at the top right of the New Canvas menu. Tap Width, Height and DPI in turn, choose inches with the unit buttons beside the keypad, and enter 8.5, 11 and 300. Procreate's guidance for printed work is a DPI of at least 300.
Expected result: a canvas of 2550 by 3300 pixels. Keep the art about 150 pixels in from each edge, which is the half-inch margin.
Step 3: ink in solid black
Sketch on one layer and ink on another above it. Use a brush with a hard edge and no texture, set to pure black, at the weight on your spec sheet. Soft, textured and pressure-faded brushes look black on a backlit screen and print as uneven grey.
Expected result: one layer of clean black outlines, with the sketch layer hidden.
Step 4: run the closed-shape test
Procreate's ColorDrop is a free gap detector. Work on a copy of the line layer and drag a bright color into each area. ColorDrop fills until it meets a boundary, and Procreate's help article warns that "Any gaps may result in the ColorDrop fill spilling through." When a fill floods past an outline, undo, close the gap and try again. If a shape you know is closed still floods, keep your finger down after the drag and swipe to lower the threshold.
Expected result: every area holds its own color. Delete the test copy. While you are zoomed in, erase stray specks and any space smaller than about 2 mm.
Step 5: export each page as a PNG
Tap Actions, then Share, then PNG, and choose where to save. The Handbook notes that only visible layers are exported, so check the sketch layer is off. PNG is lossless, which keeps line edges crisp; JPEG compression leaves faint smudges around black lines.
Expected result: one numbered PNG per page, each 2550 by 3300 pixels.
Step 6: vectorize, when it is worth it
You do not have to. A PNG drawn at full size and 300 DPI is a legitimate print file. Trace to vector when you want to enlarge the art, even out line weight across a set, or bring the file size down.
- Trace. In Inkscape, import the PNG, select it and choose Path, then Trace Bitmap. Brightness Cutoff turns each pixel black or white by a threshold from 0.0 to 1.0 and returns filled shapes.
- Or trace the centerline. The centerline option is the one made for line drawings. Inkscape describes it as giving "strokes that are easy to modify instead of filled areas", which lets you set one stroke width for the whole page.
- Simplify. Path, then Simplify, reduces the node count. Use it lightly on fine detail.
- Repair. Inkscape says plainly that the tracer is not "intended to produce a final product". Expect to rejoin a few lines by hand on each page.
Expected result: an SVG per page that stays sharp at any size. The same route works for drawings made on paper: scan them, then let Brightness Cutoff do the black-and-white conversion.
Step 7: make coloring book pages on Canva, the layout only
Canva is the right tool for assembling the pack and the wrong source for the art. Its help page says you cannot sell its content on a standalone basis, and that "using a single piece of Content with minimal additional design elements such as a border is a standalone use". A coloring page is one drawing on a page, so a Canva library illustration with a frame around it is exactly that case.
- A library line drawing placed on a page
- The same drawing with a border or a title
- Several library elements arranged as a scene, sold as clipart
- A Canva template recolored to black and white
- Your own PNG or SVG uploads, one per page
- Margins, page numbers and a title page
- A Letter design and an A4 design of the same set
- A 300 DPI PDF Print export of each
Create a design at 8.5 by 11 inches, upload your pages and place one on each page inside the margin. Canva accepts images under 50MB and SVG files under 3MB saved in the SVG 1.1 profile (checked October 2026). Then build the A4 copy and download both as PDF Print with Flatten PDF on. The two-size workflow, with every export setting, is in our tutorial on making printables to sell.
Expected result: two PDFs with the same pages in the same order, one per paper standard.
Step 8: the test print
Print every page, not a sample. One faint page in a set of thirty is the page that ends up in a review.
- Every page printed at 100% on plain paper, on a home printer
- Lines are solid black with no fuzzy or stepped edges
- The thinnest line is still clearly visible in a draft-quality print
- No grey haze, specks or leftover sketch lines anywhere
- Outline weight looks the same from the first page to the last
- Nothing is clipped at any edge, on Letter or on A4
- One page colored with the pens your buyer uses: every space is big enough to fill
- No shape leaks: color one page digitally with a fill tool as a second gap check
- Marker bleed checked on the back of the sheet, and single-sided printing noted in the guide
- Each PDF is under 20MB and opens on a phone
How to sell coloring pages: packaging the pack
You can sell coloring pages you drew yourself. Etsy requires digital items to be made or designed by the seller and takes up to five files of 20MB each per listing, which is enough for a complete pack.
| File | Contents | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| pack-name-us-letter.pdf | All pages at 8.5 x 11 in | The file North American buyers print |
| pack-name-a4.pdf | All pages at 210 x 297 mm | The file most other buyers print |
| start-here.pdf | One page | Print at 100%, single-sided, and what the licence allows |
| pack-name-png.zip | Optional: one PNG per page | For buyers who color on a tablet |
Thirty full-page images can pass 20MB once flattened. Split the set across two PDFs, use Canva's Compress PDF if you are on a paid plan, or build from vector files, which are far smaller.
- Licence. Say whether the pack is for personal use, classroom use or commercial use. Our terms of use template has wording to adapt.
- Disclosure. If any page began as an AI generation, Etsy requires that in the listing description and KDP requires it when you publish. Our guide to Etsy's AI rules has the wording.
- Rights. Draw the theme, not the franchise. Characters, logos and team names belong to someone else however you redraw them.
- Price. Run it through the free Etsy profit margin calculator first. The printables business guide covers the fee stack and the listing.
The same pages have two more lives. Bound as a paperback, they are a KDP coloring book. Sold as individual transparent PNGs with a commercial licence, the line art is clipart, which our guide to making clipart to sell covers.
A clean pack still needs a buyer who was looking for it. Our Digital Products program starts with validation, including pre-selling and competitor analysis, so you test a niche with five pages before you draw fifty, then moves to pricing and launch.
Troubleshooting
- Lines print fuzzy. The canvas was too small, or the PDF was exported at screen resolution. Redraw or trace to vector, and export PDF Print.
- Lines print grey. The brush was textured or semi-transparent. Re-ink with a hard black brush, or trace with Brightness Cutoff.
- Fills flood in a coloring app. A gap in an outline. Run the ColorDrop test again and close it.
- The trace has thousands of nodes. Simplify the path, then repair. If the SVG is over Canva's 3MB limit, simplify further or upload the PNG instead.
- Buyers say the edge is cut off. The art ran past the margin, or they printed Letter on A4. Ship both sizes and state 100% scale in the guide.
Making coloring pages to sell: FAQ
How do I make coloring pages to sell?
Draw original line art on a canvas set to 8.5 by 11 inches at 300 DPI, in solid black on white, with every shape closed and no grey shading. Export each page as a PNG, trace it to vector if you need to resize it or even out the line weight, lay the pages out with a margin in US Letter and A4, and export a 300 DPI PDF. Print every page at full size before you list the pack.
Can I sell my coloring pages?
Yes, if the line art is your own original drawing. Etsy requires digital items to be made or designed by the seller, and Amazon KDP lets you publish them as a paperback. You cannot sell pages built on someone else's characters, logos or brands without a licence, or pages traced from another artist. If an AI tool made the art, Etsy and KDP both require you to say so.
Can I make coloring book pages on Canva?
Use Canva for the layout, not the art. Canva's rules say you cannot sell its content on a standalone basis, and a single library illustration with a border counts as standalone use, so a coloring page built from a Canva line drawing is not yours to sell. Upload your own drawings instead, place one per page, and download as PDF Print. Checked October 2026.
What size and DPI should coloring pages be?
Draw at 8.5 by 11 inches and 300 DPI, which is 2550 by 3300 pixels. Procreate's own guidance is a minimum of 300 DPI for anything printed, and KDP requires at least 300 DPI for images and recommends no more than 600. Deliver a US Letter PDF and an A4 PDF, with the art inside a margin of about half an inch so home printers do not clip it.
How thick should coloring page lines be?
As working ranges on a Letter page: 3 to 5 points for bold-and-easy and toddler pages, 2 to 4 points for standard kids pages and 0.75 to 1.5 points for detailed adult designs. The only floor a platform states is KDP's minimum of 0.75 point, about 0.3 mm. At 300 DPI one point is roughly four pixels, so a 3 point line is about 13 pixels wide.
Do I need to vectorize coloring pages?
Not always. A 300 DPI PNG drawn at full page size is a legitimate print file for a Letter and A4 pack. Vectorize when you want to enlarge the art, even out line weight across a set, or shrink the file. Inkscape is free: select the image, choose Path, then Trace Bitmap, and use centerline tracing to get editable strokes instead of filled shapes.
How do I sell coloring pages on Etsy?
List the pack as a digital item with instant download. Etsy accepts up to five files of 20MB each, so a typical pack is a US Letter PDF, an A4 PDF and a short printing guide. State the number of pages, the line style and the paper sizes in the first lines of the description, and disclose AI use if any part of the art was generated. Checked October 2026.
A pack that prints clean. Now check that someone wants it.
The Digital Products program, included in All Access, opens with validation, pre-selling and competitor analysis, then covers pricing, the funnel and the launch that put a finished pack in front of buyers, with the other three programs, live coaching and the private community in one subscription.
