How to Make Clipart to Sell (From Procreate to Etsy Listing)

How to make clipart to sell: draw in Procreate, export transparent PNGs, structure bundles, write a commercial license and follow Etsy rules on AI and rights.

Quick answer

To make clipart to sell, draw a themed set of elements in one consistent style, export each as a transparent PNG at print size, package them into bundles with a plain-language license PDF, and list them on Etsy or Creative Market. You need the rights to every element: your own drawings are fine, Canva library content is not, and AI-made art must be disclosed.

To make clipart to sell, draw a themed set of elements in one consistent style, export each one as a transparent PNG at print size, and package the set as a bundle with a clear commercial-use license. Then list it on Etsy or Creative Market with preview images that show the elements in use, not just on a blank background.

Tool and marketplace rules checked October 2026 against Procreate's brand and copyright guidelines, the Procreate Handbook on sharing, Canva's help on products for sale, Etsy's Creativity Standards and digital listings help, and Creative Market's graphics guidelines.

Clipart is one of the simplest digital products to make and one of the easiest to get wrong on rights. This guide covers the build from canvas to listing. For how clipart compares with templates, printables and other formats, see the digital product creation hub.

The clipart pipeline at a glance

From idea to listing
  1. 01
    Theme

One buyer project: a baby shower, a classroom unit, autumn planners.

  2. 02
    Draw the set

One element per layer, one style, one palette.

  3. 03
    Export

Transparent PNG per element, print size.

  4. 04
    Package

Zip folders, license PDF, preview sheet.

  5. 05
    List

Mockup previews, clear license, AI disclosure if any.

Rights first: what you can and cannot put in clipart

Every element in a clipart pack is something your buyer will put in a product they sell. If you do not have the rights to an element, neither do they, and the complaint lands on you. Check these before you draw anything.

  • Your own drawings: yes. Procreate states that original work you create in its apps belongs to you. That does not cover third-party material you include or base work on, or the sample projects inside the app.
  • Canva library elements: no. Canva's help page says its license does not allow using Free or Pro content to design and sell your own stock content, naming clipart files as an example. Make clipart from scratch.
  • Stock assets and other fonts or brushes: only if their license explicitly allows use in items for resale as graphics. Many stock licenses forbid exactly that.
  • Characters, logos and brands: no. Fan art of a cartoon character or a sports logo is someone else's intellectual property, however you draw it.
  • AI-generated art: follow each marketplace's rules. Etsy accepts seller-prompted AI creations but requires disclosure in the listing description. Creative Market asks whether the product was primarily made with generative AI and labels it. Also check the AI tool's own terms for commercial use.

How to make clipart to sell in Procreate, step by step

Procreate to finished files
  1. 1
    1. Set up a large canvas

Size it so each element can be exported at print size; you can scale down later, not up.

  2. 2
    2. Lock a palette

Pick the colours for the whole set first. A matching palette is what makes a bundle a bundle.

  3. 3
    3. One element per layer

Expected result: each layer is one complete item, nothing overlapping.

  4. 4
    4. Hide the background colour

The Procreate Handbook says hiding Background Color gives a transparent background for PNG export.

  5. 5
    5. Export layers as PNGs

Share Layers as PNG gives one transparent PNG per visible layer.

  6. 6
    6. Check edges on dark and light

Open a few PNGs over black and white to catch halos and stray pixels.

  7. 7
    7. Name files clearly

theme-element-01.png, not IMG_4432.png. Buyers search their folders.

Procreate's Share menu also exports a layered PSD, a PDF and TIFF. PNG is the right default for clipart because it is lossless and keeps transparency, as the Handbook describes. If you draw in a vector app instead, add an SVG folder for buyers who cut vinyl or need to scale art up.

Transparent-background export standards buyers expect

Buyers judge clipart the moment they drop it onto their design. These standards prevent the most common review complaints:

Export standard for every element
  • Transparent background with no white box behind the element
  • Clean edges with no halo when placed on a dark colour
  • Large enough for print; 300 DPI is the common print standard and Creative Market recommends it for graphics
  • Cropped close to the artwork so buyers do not resize empty space
  • Consistent line weight and scale across the set
  • Descriptive file names grouped in themed folders

Creative Market's graphics guidelines also ask that sets be cohesive, with consistent style and consistently sized line art, and recommend a tutorial or help file. A one-page "how to use these PNGs" PDF answers half your future support questions.

Clipart PNG bundles: the bundle economics

Clipart sells in three shapes, and each one serves a different buyer. The pattern that works is a falling cost per image as the bundle grows, so the bigger purchase always feels like the better deal, while the license stays identical across all of them.

ShapeWho buys itPrice positionRole in the shop
Single elementA buyer who needs one image, or a sample of your styleLowest price, highest cost per imageUse as an entry product or freebie
Themed bundleA buyer making one project: a party, a planner, a seasonMid price, lower cost per imageYour main product
Mega-bundleA returning buyer or a small business stocking upHighest price, lowest cost per imageBuild from bundles you already sell

Build in that order: make themed bundles first, sell a few single elements as entry products, and only assemble a mega-bundle once you have several themes. A mega-bundle made from scratch is a lot of drawing to test one listing.

Etsy's file limit shapes the packaging: up to five files of up to 20MB each per digital listing (checked October 2026). A themed bundle fits in one or two zips; a mega-bundle may need a download link inside a PDF, with the files hosted somewhere you control. Our guide to file types you can sell on Etsy covers the formats in detail.

The commercial-license sticker that justifies a higher price

Many clipart buyers are sellers themselves: they make stickers, cards, planners and social graphics. For them, commercial use is the product. Put it on the first listing image as a small, clear label, then spell out the terms in the description and in a license PDF inside the download.

License tierTypically allowsTypically forbids
Personal useUse in the buyer’s own non-commercial projectsSelling anything that includes the art; sharing the files
Commercial useUse in products the buyer sells (stickers, cards, printables, social posts for a business)Reselling or giving away the clipart files as clipart; using it in a logo or trademark
Extended or unlimitedHigher unit caps or print-on-demand at scale, as you define itStill no resale of the raw files

Whatever tiers you choose, state them in plain language and keep them consistent across your shop. Our terms of use template for digital products gives a starting structure. This is general information, not legal advice; for anything unusual, talk to a lawyer where you live.

How to sell clipart on Etsy

Etsy lists digital downloads under its Designed by a seller category, which requires the design to be yours. Fees are a $0.20 listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee plus payment processing, per Etsy's fees policy (checked October 2026). A listing can carry up to 20 photos and two short videos.

  • First image: the bundle laid out with the theme in the title and a commercial-use label.
  • Second and third: the elements in use, on a card, a planner page or a sticker sheet. Our Canva mockups for Etsy guide shows how; mockups of your own art are fine.
  • One image of the file list so buyers know exactly how many elements and which formats they get.
  • Description: element count, file formats, sizes, the license summary and any AI disclosure.

Our Digital Products program covers niche research, listing images and launch sequencing for products like clipart, so the first bundle is built for a buyer you have already found.

Create a clipart business that compounds

A clipart shop grows by theme and by style. Pick a style buyers can recognise across listings, then release themes on a seasonal calendar a couple of months ahead of the date, because buyers making products for an occasion shop early. Each new theme becomes a bundle, a few singles and eventually part of a mega-bundle. For adjacent formats that reuse the same art, read our printables business guide.

Keep a master file per theme with every layer intact. When a buyer asks for a colour variant or a missing element, you add a layer and re-export rather than redrawing, and the update goes to everyone who bought the bundle. Marketplaces such as Creative Market also expect products to stay compatible with current software, so a tidy master makes those updates quick.

Troubleshooting

  • Buyer sees a white box. The background colour layer was visible at export. Hide it and re-export.
  • Edges look jagged when printed. The canvas was too small. Redraw at a larger size; upscaling a small PNG does not add detail.
  • Upload fails on Etsy. A zip is over 20MB. Split by theme or element type.
  • A buyer asks if they can resell the PNGs. Point them to the license PDF. If the answer is no, say so plainly.

Making clipart to sell: FAQ

Can I sell clipart I make in Procreate?

Yes. Procreate says all the original work you create in its apps belongs to you, which excludes third-party material and the sample projects inside the app. So clipart you draw yourself in Procreate is yours to sell. Do not trace other artists, do not export the sample projects, and do not put the Procreate name in your shop or product names, which its brand guidelines prohibit. Checked October 2026.

Can I make clipart in Canva and sell it?

Not from Canva library content. Canva help says its Content License Agreement does not allow using Free or Pro content to design and sell your own stock content, and it names clipart files as an example. If you want to sell clipart, you need to create the designs from scratch. Canva can still help with listing images and mockups of your own artwork. Checked October 2026.

Can I sell AI-generated clipart on Etsy?

Etsy allows seller-prompted AI creations under its Designed by a seller category, and its Creativity Standards require you to disclose in the listing description that an item was created with AI. Check the AI tool terms too, since commercial rights vary by tool and plan. Creative Market asks shop owners to answer whether a product was primarily created with generative AI and labels those products. Checked October 2026.

What file format should clipart be sold in?

Transparent PNG is the standard most buyers expect, exported at a size large enough to print, often at 300 DPI for print work. Add SVG or another vector format if you draw in vectors and want buyers who cut vinyl or scale art up. Group files into themed zip folders. Etsy allows up to five files of up to 20MB each per digital listing, so plan bundles around that limit.

What license should clipart come with?

State it in plain words in a PDF inside the download and on the listing. Most clipart sellers offer a personal license and a commercial license that allows use in products the buyer sells, such as stickers, cards or printables, while forbidding resale of the clipart itself as clipart. Add any limits you want, such as a unit cap or a credit line. This is general information, not legal advice.

Should I sell single clipart images or bundles?

Most sellers lead with themed bundles, because a buyer making a birthday card or a classroom printable wants a matching set, not one image. Single elements work as low-priced entry products or freebies that show your style. Large mega-bundles suit returning buyers. Price each tier so the bundle gives a lower cost per image than buying singles, and keep the license the same across all three.
