How to Create Mockups in Canva for Etsy (Free Method)

Create mockups in Canva for Etsy without Photoshop: frames, the Mockups app and a free smart-object fallback, ending in a 10-image set for digital products.

Quick answer

To create mockups in Canva for Etsy, drop your exported design into a Canva frame or the Mockups app, size the canvas for Etsy and download at full resolution. Canva has no Photoshop smart objects, so you rebuild the effect with frames and a reusable template, and switch to a free PSD editor only when you need perspective placement. Finish with a ten-image listing set that answers every buyer question.

To create mockups in Canva for Etsy, export your product page as a PNG, drop it into a Canva frame or the Mockups app, place it on a canvas sized for Etsy and download it at full resolution. Save that design as your mockup template, and every new product becomes a two-minute swap instead of a new design.

Canva features checked in October 2026 against Canva Help on creating mockups and using frames, and Etsy specs against its image requirements.

This tutorial exists because of one gap. Most mockup advice assumes Photoshop and its smart objects: you double-click a layer, paste your design, save, and every copy updates in perspective. Canva does not have smart objects. You can still build fast, reusable mockups in it; you just use different tools. By the end you will have a reusable template and a ten-image listing set for any digital product. Mockups are one part of marketing a product; our digital product marketing playbook shows where listing images sit in the wider plan.

What you will have at the end

  • A Canva mockup template with frames ready for your product pages.
  • At least one in-context mockup from the Canva Mockups app.
  • A ten-image Etsy listing set you can duplicate for every new product.
  • A free fallback for the rare mockup that needs true perspective.

Before you start: the pre-flight check

Have these ready
  • Your product pages exported as PNG at full resolution
  • A Canva account (the free plan covers frames and the Mockups app)
  • Your shop fonts and two or three brand colors
  • A list of what is included: page count, sizes, file types
  • Any photos you took yourself for backgrounds (useful for custom mockups)
  • Etsy specs: at least 2,000 px per side, landscape or square first image

The smart-object problem, and the Canva workaround

A Photoshop mockup is a photo with a smart object layer warped to match a screen, a sheet of paper or a frame on a wall. You change the content once, and the warp and shadows stay. Canva cannot do that in a normal design, so there are three substitutes, each good for a different image:

NeedCanva toolWhat it is good for
Flat or straight-on product viewFramesPages, screens, printables shown face-on; reusable as a template

For digital products, frames do most of the work. Buyers of planners, printables and templates want to read the product, and a face-on view reads better than a dramatic angle. Use one scene mockup as the hero image, then frames for everything else.

Canva mockup tutorial: build a reusable frame template

Canva describes frames as placeholders that crop any image or video you drop in, and lists building mockups as one of their uses. Here is how to turn that into a template.

Build the frame mockup template
  1. 1
    Create a 2,000 x 2,000 px design

Square works for every Etsy thumbnail crop. Expected result: a blank square canvas.

  2. 2
    Add a background

A soft color, a texture or your own desk photo. Keep it quiet so the product stands out.

  3. 3
    Add frames from Elements

Elements, then Frames. Pick rectangles or a device frame. Expected result: grey placeholder shapes.

  4. 4
    Drop your product PNGs in

Drag each exported page onto a frame until it snaps in. Double-click to reposition.

  5. 5
    Add depth

A soft shadow behind each frame and slight overlap make flat pages look like paper.

  6. 6
    Add the label layer

Product name and one benefit in large type. Expected result: a finished hero image.

Duplicate the page in the same design for each of your ten listing images, then save the whole design as your template. For the next product you only drag new PNGs onto the existing frames; the layout, shadows and type stay put. That is the smart-object effect, rebuilt with frames.

Etsy mockups in Canva with the Mockups app

The Mockups app handles the in-context image: your design on a laptop, a tablet, a framed print or a sheet of paper. Canva's help page lists three routes in: from Elements in the editor (search the Mockups category), from Edit on a photo under Apps, or from Apps on the homepage.

Make an in-context mockup
  1. 1
    Open Apps and search Mockups

From the homepage, go to Apps, then Mockups.

  2. 2
    Pick a scene

Click a mockup to preview it. Choose one that matches your product: tablet for digital planners, frame for wall art.

  3. 3
    Select your design

Choose an upload or a Canva design, then click Next. Expected result: your design placed in the scene.

  4. 4
    Adjust the fit

Use Fill, Fit or Smart Crop, or drag the handles to resize. Apply changes.

  5. 5
    Save and use

Save mockup, then Use in a design to drop it into your listing template.

If you are on a paid plan, Create Your Own Mockup turns your own photo into a reusable scene. Canva says it analyses the photo for surfaces, and that Premium photos do not work with it, so use your own photos or free library images. Its tips are worth following: flat, simple surfaces and uncluttered backgrounds give the most natural result.

Digital product mockup tutorial: the ten-image listing set

Etsy allows up to 20 photos per listing, according to its create-a-listing help page (checked October 2026). You do not need all of them. Ten images, each answering one buyer question, cover a digital product well:

#ImageWhat it showsBuilt with
1Hero mockupThe product in use, title in large typeLandscape or square
2What is includedGrid of every page or file with a countFlat layout
3Close-up oneThe most detailed page at readable sizeFrame crop
4Close-up twoA second key page or the editable fieldsFrame crop

7CustomizationBefore and after of the editable versionSide by side
8Sizes and formatsPaper sizes, file types, software neededFlat layout
9DeliveryWhat the buyer downloads and where to find itFlat layout
10Bundle or collectionMatching products from the same shopGrid

Images 1 and 5 come from the Mockups app or a scene photo; the rest are frame layouts from your template. Keep fonts and colors identical across all ten so the listing looks like one product, not a collage. For the copy that sits beside these images, our Etsy title tips and the guide to selling digital products on Etsy cover titles, tags and descriptions.

Reusing the template for every new product

The payoff of a template comes on the second product. Keep one master design with all ten pages and never edit it directly. For each new listing, make a copy, rename it after the product, and work through the pages in order:

  1. Export the new product pages as PNGs into one folder, named in the order you want them shown.
  2. Drag each PNG onto the matching frame. The frame keeps its crop, shadow and position.
  3. Update the text layers: product name, page count, sizes, file types.
  4. Rerun the Mockups app for the hero and in-context images, since those are flattened images rather than frames.
  5. Download all pages at once and upload them to Etsy in order, hero first.

Once the template exists, a full ten-image set becomes a short task rather than an afternoon. Keep a second master in portrait proportions if you also post the images to Pinterest, where tall pins are the norm, so you do not have to rebuild layouts for each channel.

Export settings for Etsy

  • Size: Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels on each side, and at least 635 pixels for the first photo (checked October 2026).
  • Shape: make the first image landscape or square; Etsy says it sets the shape of the photos after it.
  • File type: JPG or PNG. Etsy does not support transparent PNGs (transparent areas show black) or animated GIFs.
  • Color: Etsy converts images to sRGB, so download PNG or JPG in RGB rather than a print-ready CMYK file.
  • File size: Etsy notes images over 1MB may not finish uploading on slow connections. Download as JPG at a high quality setting if a PNG is too heavy.
  • Thumbnail room: leave a border so Etsy can crop the first image to square, portrait or landscape without cutting the product.

When to leave Canva: the free smart-object fallback

Some products need an angled view: a template on a phone held at an angle, a print on a wall shot from the side. Frames cannot warp to perspective. If you have a PSD mockup with a smart object, Photopea opens it in a browser for free. Its documentation explains that you double-click a smart object's thumbnail to edit its source, save, and every linked copy updates. Paste your product in, save, export a JPG, then bring that JPG back into your Canva template as the hero image.

Check the licence of any PSD mockup you download. Free mockups often allow commercial use for promotion but forbid reselling the mockup itself, and some require attribution.

Licensing: what Canva allows in listing images

Canva's Content License Agreement lists advertising and promotional projects among permitted uses of designs that contain Canva content (checked October 2026), which is what a listing image is: it promotes your product. Two limits matter. Canva's guide to selling products made in Canva says you cannot sell Canva content on a standalone basis, and that templates containing Pro content can only be sold as Canva template links. So using a Canva photo behind your product in a listing image is a different case from selling a mockup template built on that photo.

Troubleshooting

  • Design will not snap into the frame. Drag the image directly over the frame until it highlights, not beside it.
  • Mockup looks fake. Use a scene with flat surfaces and soft light, and add a subtle shadow under flat pages.
  • Create Your Own Mockup is missing. It needs a paid plan, and it will not run on Premium photos.
  • Colors look different on Etsy. Re-export as RGB/sRGB; CMYK files shift when Etsy converts them.
  • Thumbnail cuts off the product. Add more border around the hero image and use Etsy's thumbnail adjustment tool.

Canva mockups for Etsy: FAQ

Can you make Etsy mockups in Canva for free?

Yes. Canva frames are available on the free plan and Canva describes its Mockups app as a free product mockup generator. You can drop your design into a device, frame or paper mockup and download the result. Creating your own custom mockup template from a photo is limited to paid plans such as Pro and Teams, according to Canva help, checked October 2026.

Does Canva have smart objects like Photoshop?

No. Canva has no Photoshop-style smart objects that update every copy of a design at once. The closest tools are frames, which crop any image you drop in to a shape, and the Mockups app, which places a design onto a product photo. If you need true smart objects, a free browser editor such as Photopea opens PSD mockups and lets you edit their smart objects.

Can I use Canva stock photos in my Etsy listing images?

Canva's Content License Agreement permits Canva content in advertising and promotional designs, which covers images that promote your product. What you cannot do is sell Canva content on its own or with minimal changes. Read the current agreement yourself, and avoid Premium photos in the Create Your Own Mockup tool, which Canva says does not support them.

What size should Etsy mockup images be?

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels wide and tall, and says the first photo should be at least 635 pixels to avoid showing lower in search. The first image should be landscape or square, and its shape sets the shape of the rest. Images over 1MB may not finish uploading on slow connections. Requirements checked October 2026.

Can I sell mockup templates I make in Canva?

Only under Canva's template rules. Canva says templates that include Pro content can only be sold as Canva template links, not as files, and that you cannot sell Canva content as stock or on a standalone basis. A mockup template built from your own photos and Free content is more flexible. Check the Content License Agreement before listing any mockup product.

How many mockup images should an Etsy listing have?

Etsy allows up to 20 photos per listing, according to its create-a-listing help page, checked October 2026. For a digital product, ten well-planned images usually cover everything a buyer asks: the hero shot, what is included, close-ups, how it is used, sizes and file types, and how delivery works. Extra images help only if each one answers a new question.
