Etsy Title Tips: Formulas for Digital Products

Etsy title tips for digital products: six copy-paste formulas for printables, templates, planners and presets, built on Etsy’s own 2026 listing title guidance.

Quick answer

A strong Etsy title for a digital product names the item once, adds two or three objective details and the format, and stops well under 15 words. Etsy's own 2026 guidance asks for exactly that, and says title position does not affect ranking, so order the words for the buyer. Below are six copy-paste formulas for printables, templates, planners and presets, a weak-vs-strong comparison and a checklist to run before you publish.

The best Etsy title tips for digital products come down to one rule: say what the file is in the first few words, add the two or three details a buyer filters by, and stop. Etsy's own 2026 guidance asks for clear, easy-to-scan titles and says keywords crammed into the title no longer do the work they used to, because search now reads the whole listing.

Title rules checked in October 2026 against Etsy's Help Center article How to Create a Listing and the Seller Handbook articles New Guidance for Listing Titles, and a Tool to Help (April 2026) and Keywords 101.

Etsy allows up to 140 characters in a title, and its listing help suggests fewer than 15 words. In the April 2026 update, Etsy explained that search used to lean heavily on titles, which pushed sellers to pack them with keywords; it now looks at the title together with tags, attributes, the description, the first photo and reviews. So the job of the title has changed: it is the line a shopper reads in a busy results page. This page gives you the formulas. For where titles fit in a whole shop, start with our guide to selling digital products on Etsy.

How to write Etsy titles: Etsy's 2026 rules in one table

Etsy published its updated title guidance as a table of keyword types and what to do with each. Here it is, applied to digital products. The left column is Etsy's category; the examples are ours.

Keyword typeKeep in title?Digital product examples
The noun (what it is)Keep, oncePrintable wall art, budget planner, wedding sign template
Objective descriptorsKeep the top fewSage green, A4, editable, undated, set of 3
Occasions and recipientsOnly if essentialKeep for a birthday invitation, drop for a generic planner
Gifting and aspirational phrasesAvoid repeatingGift for her, perfect present: move to tags
Subjective wordsMove outBeautiful, perfect, stunning: move to tags or attributes
How it is soldRemoveOn sale, instant savings, free shipping
Repeated wordsRemovePlanner printable, printable planner, planner pages

Two more rules from the listing help matter for files: there is no need to put price or shipping in the title, and you should avoid subjective words such as "perfect". Anything you remove does not disappear from search; Etsy suggests moving it to tags, attributes and the description, where it still helps matching.

Etsy title keywords order: front-load for people, not for ranking

A common belief is that the first words of a title rank higher. Etsy's Keywords 101 article says otherwise: where a phrase is used in your title does not affect a listing's ranking. The same article still tells you to lead with the keywords that best describe the item, because that is what shoppers see first, especially on mobile, where long titles are cut off after a few words.

So the order rule is about the click, not the algorithm. Put the noun and its most important descriptor first, the format next, and the secondary detail last. Punctuation such as a colon or comma is fine to separate phrases; Etsy says search still reads each phrase. One phrase per idea, no repeats.

Fill any formula in this order
  1. 1
    Write the noun buyers search

The product as a shopper would type it: budget planner, wall art, invitation template.

  2. 2
    Add the deciding descriptor

The one detail that separates your listing: style, color, theme, subject or audience.

  3. 3
    Add the format

Printable, editable template, digital planner, presets. One word or short phrase, once.

  4. 4
Add one or two specs after a colon

Size, page count, set size or the software it opens in.

  5. 5
    Cut to under 15 words

Remove repeats, gift phrases and adjectives. Move them to tags.

  6. 6
    Read it on a phone

If the first few words alone do not say what it is, reorder.

Etsy title examples for digital products: six copy-paste formulas

Each formula below has a pattern to copy and a filled example. The examples use made-up products for illustration; replace every bracket with words your buyers actually search, which you can find in the Etsy search terms list inside Stats (our Etsy Stats guide shows where).

1. Printable wall art

[Subject] [Style] Printable Wall Art: [Set size], [Sizes]
Sage Green Botanical Printable Wall Art: Set of 3, A4 to A1

Wall art buyers filter by subject and style first, so they lead. The set size and the print sizes follow the colon because they decide whether the file fits the frame the buyer already owns.

2. Editable template

Editable [Document] Template for [Software]: [Spec]
Editable Wedding Welcome Sign Template for Canva: 24x36 and 18x24

For templates, the software is a deciding detail, because a buyer who does not use it cannot open the file. Keep it in the title. The word "editable" is objective here: it tells the buyer they can change the text.

3. Printable planner

[Dated or Undated] [Planner type] Printable: [Paper sizes], [Pages]
Undated Weekly Budget Planner Printable: A4 and US Letter, 12 Pages

Etsy does not offer variations on listings set up as digital files, so you cannot add a size dropdown. That makes paper size a real search and purchase filter for printable planners, worth stating in the title once.

4. Digital planner for tablets

[Year or Undated] Digital Planner for [App]: [Layout], [Feature]
2027 Digital Planner for GoodNotes: Daily Pages, Hyperlinked Tabs

"Digital planner" and "printable planner" are different products to a buyer, so keep the format phrase exact. The app name filters out buyers who cannot use the file, which saves you refunds and messages.

5. Photo presets

[Look] Lightroom Presets: [Number] [Mobile/Desktop], [Use case]
Warm Film Lightroom Presets: 10 Mobile and Desktop, Travel Photos

Preset buyers choose a look, so the look leads. The count and the platforms follow, then one use case. Avoid stacking several looks (moody, bright, warm, vintage) in one title; that is the keyword pile Etsy's guidance asks you to drop.

6. Worksheets and bundles

[Grade or Level] [Subject] Worksheets: [Count] Printable Pages, [Skill]
2nd Grade Math Worksheets: 40 Printable Pages, Addition and Subtraction

Education buyers filter by level and subject before anything else. For bundles, the count is the selling detail, so it goes after the colon where it is easy to scan.

Etsy title tips: how to adapt the formulas

  • Swap the noun for the searched noun. If buyers type "budget tracker" rather than "budget planner", use their words. Your Stats search terms and the Etsy search bar suggestions are the evidence.
  • Pick three details, not seven. Etsy's guidance says to include the top few objective descriptors. For files these are usually style, size or software, and set size.
  • Keep the occasion only when it is the product. A baby shower invitation template needs the occasion; a planner does not need "Christmas gift".
  • Write the ad version short. If you run Etsy Ads, Etsy's advertising checklist suggests titles of about 40 characters or less. Formula 1 cut to its first phrase (Sage Green Botanical Printable Wall Art) fits.
  • Check the matching spread. Whatever leaves the title goes into the 13 tags Etsy allows and into attributes, so the listing still matches the long-tail searches.

Etsy's optional title tool, introduced in April 2026, suggests rewrites from your existing listing information and can apply them to several listings at once. It is a reasonable first draft. Check every suggestion against the file: a tool cannot know that your template opens only in Canva or that the set has three prints, not four. Our guide to file types you can sell on Etsy lists the format details worth getting right.

Weak vs strong: the same listing, rewritten

Keyword pile
  • Budget Planner, Budget Printable, Finance Planner, Money Tracker, Gift for Her, Perfect Planner, Instant Download
  • Repeats planner three times
  • Two gift and subjective phrases
  • Size, pages and format missing
  • Phone shows only “Budget Planner, Budget…”
Formula 3 applied
  • Undated Weekly Budget Planner Printable: A4 and US Letter, 12 Pages
  • Noun once, with its deciding detail first
  • Format stated once
  • Sizes and page count a buyer filters by
  • Money tracker and gift terms moved to tags

The strong version is shorter and carries more information a buyer can act on. Nothing searchable was lost: money tracker, finance planner and gift for her become tags, where they still match searches without making the title harder to read.

Titles are one lever of several

A good title earns the click; the first photo, the description and the price earn the sale. If a retitled listing gets more views but no more orders, the page is the next fix, and the price may be part of it. Our breakdown of Etsy digital product profit margins shows what each price point keeps after fees. If you are still choosing what to list, start with low-competition digital products, where clear titles stand out faster.

Before-publishing checklist

Run this on every title
  • The product noun appears once, in the first few words
  • No more than three descriptors, all objective (style, size, software, count)
  • The format is stated once: printable, editable template, digital planner, presets
  • Under 15 words, and well under the 140-character limit
  • No price, sale, shipping or “instant savings” wording
  • No subjective words like perfect or beautiful
  • Gift or occasion words only if the product is for that occasion
  • Everything removed from the title is now in tags or attributes
  • Every spec in the title matches the actual file
  • Read on a phone screen: the first few words say what it is

Etsy title tips: FAQ

How long can an Etsy title be?

Etsy allows up to 140 characters in a listing title. Its listing help also suggests using fewer than 15 words, and its advertising checklist says a title of about 40 characters or less is ideal for ads. For a digital product, a clear noun, two or three key details and the format usually fit well inside 15 words, with the rest of your keywords moved to tags, attributes and the description.

Does keyword order matter in an Etsy title?

Not for ranking. Etsy's Seller Handbook says where a phrase sits in the title does not affect a listing's ranking. Order still matters for buyers: Etsy recommends leading with the words that best describe the item, because that is what shoppers see first in search results, especially on phones where titles are cut short. Put the product noun and its main descriptor first for that reason.

Should I put "digital download" in my Etsy title?

Put the format in the title only when it helps a buyer understand what arrives, such as printable, editable template, or digital planner. You already tell Etsy the listing is digital files during setup, so a long string of format words in the title wastes space. One clear format word near the noun is usually enough; details like file type and sizes belong in the description.

Can I use gift words like "gift for her" in Etsy titles?

Etsy's 2026 title guidance says to avoid repeating aspirational or gifting phrases in titles, and to include occasions or recipients only when they are essential to what the item is, such as a birthday invitation. For most digital products, put gifting terms in tags instead, where they still help matching without making the title harder to read.

Will changing my Etsy title change the listing URL?

No. Etsy builds the listing URL from the title you enter when you first publish, and the URL does not change when you edit the title later. That means you can rewrite titles safely for search and clarity. If you change what the listing actually sells, Etsy suggests creating a new listing so the URL matches the product.

Does Etsy have a tool that rewrites titles?

Yes. In April 2026 Etsy announced an optional tool that uses your existing listing information to suggest titles that follow its updated guidance, and it can update several listings at once. Etsy describes the suggestions as a starting point rather than a directive. Check each suggestion against what the file actually contains before applying it, especially sizes and software.
