Etsy Digital Product Profit Margins: The Real Numbers

Etsy digital product profit margins worked out at five price points: every fee per sale, what Offsite Ads and refunds take, and the sales a monthly goal needs.

Quick answer

An Etsy digital download keeps 75% to 89% of its price after Etsy's fees, depending on price: the fixed $0.45 per sale hits cheap items hardest. A sale through Offsite Ads loses another 15 points, and Etsy Ads come out of what is left. At $8 you keep $6.79 per sale, so a $1,000 month needs 148 sales before ads. The tables below show five price points, and the free calculator runs your own numbers.

An Etsy digital product keeps between 75% and 89% of its price after Etsy's fees, and the cheaper the item, the lower the margin. On an $8 printable, Etsy takes $1.21 and you keep $6.79. A sale that came through Offsite Ads keeps about 15 points less, and any Etsy Ads spend comes out of what is left.

Every figure here is calculated from Etsy's published US fees, checked in October 2026 against the Fees & Payments Policy and Etsy Payments Policy. They are fee arithmetic, not sales data or income predictions: what a shop earns depends on demand for its listings.

This page is part of our guide to selling digital products on Etsy, which covers niches, listings and SEO. Here we only look at the money: what each sale leaves you, where the margin leaks and how many sales a goal takes. To run your own price, open the free Etsy Profit Margin Calculator alongside this page.

The Etsy fee stack on a digital download

Digital files skip shipping, packaging and production, so the only costs on each sale are Etsy's. There are three fees on every sale and two that depend on how the buyer found you:

FeeRateWhen it applies
Listing fee$0.20Every sale renews the listing and charges it again
Transaction fee6.5%Of the item price (and shipping, which digital files do not have)
Payment processing (US)3% + $0.25Etsy Payments; the rate differs by country
Offsite Ads15% or 12%Only on sales attributed to an Offsite Ad; capped at $100 per order
Etsy AdsYour budgetOptional on-site ads; a daily budget you set

The listing fee is easy to forget because it looks like a one-off. It is not: each sale renews the listing for another four months and charges the $0.20 again, so it is a per-sale cost. Together with the $0.25 processing fee, that is $0.45 taken from every sale whatever the price, and it is why cheap printables have the thinnest margins.

Here is the same fee stack applied to five typical prices for digital downloads, from a single $3 printable to a $30 template bundle. The last column is how many sales a month it takes to keep $1,000 after fees, before any ads or tools.

Two things stand out. First, the margin climbs with price but flattens: going from $3 to $8 adds almost 10 points, while going from $15 to $30 adds 1.5. Above about $15 the fixed $0.45 barely matters and you are left with the 9.5% in percentage fees. Second, volume needs fall much faster than margins rise. A $3 printable needs nearly twelve times as many sales as a $30 bundle to keep the same $1,000.

Pricing is its own decision, and fees are only one input. If you are deciding what to charge, the digital product marketing playbook covers how price changes which channels work.

Offsite Ads: the fee that changes the math

Offsite Ads are ads Etsy buys for your listings on Google, social platforms and other sites. If a buyer clicks one and purchases from your shop within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order, or 12% if your shop made $10,000 or more in the last 12 months. The fee is capped at $100 per order, which only matters above about $667.

Look at the "Via Offsite Ads" column above: every price point loses exactly 15 points of margin on those sales. It also sets a ceiling. With the 9.5% percentage fees and 15% Offsite Ads, no price can keep more than 75.5% of an Offsite Ads sale, because the fixed fees never go to zero.

Opt out (under $10k only)
  • No 15% fee on any sale
  • Lose the traffic Etsy buys for you
  • Useful when margins are already thin
  • Not available once you pass $10,000
Stay in
  • Pay 15% (or 12%) only on attributed sales
  • Free reach you would not get otherwise
  • Only charged when a sale happens
  • Mandatory above $10,000 a year

The useful question is not whether 15% is expensive, but whether those buyers would have found you anyway. Shop Manager shows how many orders came through Offsite Ads. If they are a small share of sales and your items are cheap, opting out may protect margin; if they are a large share, they are probably sales you would not otherwise have made. In the calculator, set the share of sales from Offsite Ads to your real figure and compare.

Etsy Ads and break-even ROAS

Etsy Ads are the on-site ads you pay for with a daily budget. Unlike Offsite Ads, you pay for clicks whether or not a sale follows, so the question is how much ad-driven revenue each dollar must bring back. That threshold is break-even ROAS: price divided by what you keep per sale.

1.18x
Break-even ROAS for an $8 printable after Etsy fees
  • $8 price / $6.79 kept per sale
  • Below 1.18x, each ad-driven sale costs more than it earns
  • Your Etsy Ads dashboard shows your actual ROAS

Because digital products keep so much of their price, the break-even bar is low. The trap is that ad sales and organic sales blur together: if Etsy Ads mostly reach buyers who would have found the listing in search anyway, the dashboard ROAS looks better than the real gain. Test ads on a listing that already sells organically, and watch total shop profit, not only the ROAS figure.

Refunds and what they cost

Digital downloads are refunded less often than physical goods because there is nothing to return, but it happens, usually from a wrong file format or a buyer who expected something editable. When you issue a refund through Shop Manager, Etsy recalculates its percentage fees on the reduced sale price and credits the difference back. You lose the refunded price minus those fees, and the $0.20 listing renewal stays spent.

On an $8 item with a 3% refund allowance, that costs about $0.22 per sale on average, taking you from $6.79 to $6.57. Small, but worth including so the plan matches your bank account. Refunds that Etsy covers itself through its Purchase Protection program work differently: the fees are not credited back.

A worked monthly P&L for a printable shop

Here is a hypothetical shop selling $8 printables, put together to show how the costs stack up, not to suggest what a shop will earn:

Example: 100 sales of an $8 printable in a month
  1. 1
    Revenue: $800

    100 sales x $8

  2. 2
    Etsy fees and refunds: $147.24

Listing, 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing, 10% of sales via Offsite Ads, 2% refund allowance

  3. 3
    Etsy Ads: $60, tools: $15

A small daily ad budget and a design tool subscription

  4. 4
    Profit: $577.76

72% of revenue; 165 sales would be needed for $1,000

The per-sale margin is about 82%, but the shop keeps 72% of revenue once ads and tools are paid. The gap between those two numbers is the one to watch as you add ad spend. The Etsy Profit Margin Calculator rebuilds this with your price, sales, ad budget and refund rate, and tells you the sales a profit goal needs and the price for a target margin.

Five ways to raise your Etsy margin

Margin levers, in order of impact
  • Bundle cheap items: one $15 bundle pays the fixed $0.45 once instead of five times
  • Raise prices in small steps on listings that already sell, and watch conversion
  • Check your Offsite Ads share before deciding to opt out or stay in
  • Run Etsy Ads only on listings that sell organically, and compare against break-even ROAS
  • Cut refunds with clear file formats, sizes and an "is this editable?" line in the listing

Margin is the easy half. The hard half is a listing people search for and pick. Our Digital Products program covers choosing products with demand, building them, writing listings and moving buyers from Etsy to your own email list, where there are no per-sale fees.

Etsy margin vs selling on your own store

On your own store the per-sale fees are lower, often just a payment processor or a platform's cut, but you supply every buyer yourself. Etsy charges more and sends you buyers who are already searching. Most sellers use both: Etsy for discovery, an own store for repeat customers. The free Digital Product Fee Calculator puts Etsy, Gumroad, Stripe and Lemon Squeezy side by side for any price.

Etsy digital product profit margins: FAQ

What is a good profit margin for Etsy digital products?

Before ads, a digital download priced at $5 or more keeps about 80% or more of the price after Etsy's fees, because there is no production or shipping cost. Below $5 the fixed $0.45 per sale (the $0.20 listing renewal plus the $0.25 processing fee) eats a growing share. Sales that come through Offsite Ads drop the margin by 15 points, and Etsy Ads spend comes out of what is left.

How much does Etsy take from a digital download sale?

In the US, Etsy takes a $0.20 listing fee (charged again each time the item sells), a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 for payment processing. On an $8 printable that is $1.21, or about 15% of the price. If the sale came through an Offsite Ad, add 15% of the order (12% for shops over $10,000 a year), capped at $100.

Are Etsy digital products actually profitable?

Per sale, yes: the margin on a digital file is high because the product costs nothing to deliver again. Whether a shop is profitable depends on volume, which depends on demand for the listing, and on what you spend on Etsy Ads and tools. The fees are the predictable part; sales volume is not, so treat any monthly figure as arithmetic, not a forecast.

Can you turn off Offsite Ads on Etsy?

Shops that made under $10,000 in the last 12 months can opt out in Shop Manager. Once a shop passes $10,000 it is enrolled permanently and pays 12% instead of 15% on attributed sales. Opting out removes the fee but also the ad traffic Etsy buys for you, so check how many of your sales came through Offsite Ads before deciding.

Do I get Etsy fees back when I refund a digital product?

Partly. When you issue a refund through Shop Manager, Etsy recalculates its percentage fees on the adjusted sale price and credits the difference back, so you mainly lose the refunded price minus those fees. The listing fee is not returned. Refunds Etsy covers itself through its Purchase Protection program are handled differently and the fees are not credited.

How many sales do I need to make $1,000 a month on Etsy?

Divide the goal plus your monthly ad and tool costs by what you keep per sale. At $8 per printable with no ads, you keep $6.79 per sale, so $1,000 needs 148 sales a month. At $3 you keep $2.27 and need 442. The calculator does this for any price, but it cannot tell you whether the demand exists; that comes from your listings.
