Price it, then sell it
Fees are the easy part. The Digital Products course covers picking a product people pay for, pricing, storefront setup and getting your first buyers.
Explore Digital ProductsHow the calculator works
Fees per sale = Charged amount × Percentage + Fixed fees Net per sale = Charged amount - Fees per sale Net for N sales = Net per sale × N Price for a target net = (Target net + Fixed fees) ÷ (1 - Percentage)
On Etsy the charged amount is item price plus shipping, because Etsy's transaction, processing and Offsite Ads fees all apply to shipping too. The other platforms charge on the item price.

- Etsy's listing fee is per listing. A listing lasts four months or until it sells, and Etsy renews it for $0.20 each time it sells, so the calculator counts it once per sale.
- Not included: sales tax and VAT, currency conversion, payout or transfer fees, refunds, chargebacks, subscriptions such as Etsy Plus, and ads you pay for yourself.
- Payment processing differs outside the US. Etsy and Stripe both charge different rates by country; edit the fields to match yours.
FAQ
How much does Etsy take from a $20 digital download?
With the default US rates and no Offsite Ads: $0.20 listing fee, $1.30 transaction fee (6.5%) and $0.85 payment processing (3% + $0.25), so $2.35 in fees and $17.65 to you. If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, add $3.00 at 15% or $2.40 at 12%.
Is Gumroad cheaper than Etsy for digital products?
On fees alone the two are close. A $20 direct Gumroad sale costs $2.50 against $2.35 on Etsy without Offsite Ads, but one Offsite Ads sale adds 12 to 15% on Etsy and a Gumroad Discover sale costs 30%. The bigger difference is usually where your buyers come from, not the fee.
What are Etsy Offsite Ads and can I avoid the fee?
Etsy advertises listings on other sites and charges a fee only when a sale comes from one of those ads: 15% of the order total, or 12% for shops that made $10,000 or more in the past 12 months, capped at $100 per order. Shops under $10,000 can opt out in their settings; shops above it cannot.
Does Stripe charge more for international cards?
Yes. Stripe's US pricing adds a surcharge for cards issued outside the US, and more if currency conversion is needed. The calculator defaults the surcharge to 1.5%, and you can edit it to match your Stripe dashboard.
Who handles sales tax and VAT on each platform?
Lemon Squeezy and Gumroad act as merchant of record, so they collect and remit sales tax and VAT for you. Etsy collects sales tax and VAT in the many places that require marketplaces to. With Stripe direct you are the seller, so registering and filing is on you (Stripe Tax costs extra). The calculator does not include tax.
How does the "price to net" mode work?
Each platform takes a percentage plus a fixed amount, so the price you need is (target net + fixed fees) / (1 - percentage). On Etsy the fees are charged on item plus shipping, so shipping you charge is subtracted from the item price you need. Prices are rounded up to the cent.
