Quick answer

The free Etsy profit margin calculator takes a digital product's price and monthly sales and returns profit, what you keep per sale, the sales a goal needs and break-even ROAS, after every Etsy fee. A plain US sale costs 9.5% plus $0.45; Offsite Ads, Etsy Ads, refunds and tools come on top. In the worked example, a $12 file keeps $9.84 per sale and 80 sales leave $734.20.

Our free Etsy profit margin calculator takes the price of a digital product and your monthly sales and returns what you keep per sale, your profit for the month and the number of sales a profit goal needs, after every Etsy fee. It is built for files, not parcels: there are no shipping or cost-of-goods boxes, and the fee stack is the one Etsy publishes for US shops, 9.5% of the price plus $0.45 on a plain sale.

Open the Etsy Profit Margin Calculator. It loads with a $12 item and 40 sales a month, so you see a result before you type anything.

Fees checked on 11 October 2026 against Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and Etsy Help on payment processing fees, Offsite Ads and refunds. Every dollar figure on this page is that fee schedule applied to illustrative inputs. None of it is sales data or an earnings forecast.

This page explains what goes into the calculator, the formula it runs and how to read the answer. It belongs to our guide to selling digital products on Etsy, which covers the part no calculator can do: niches, listings and search. If you want the fee analysis without the tool, read Etsy digital product profit margins.

How to use the Etsy profit margin calculator

Two inputs give you a result; the other six make it honest. Have these numbers ready before you open it, because guessing them is how a margin ends up ten points too high.

Numbers to pull from Shop Manager first
  • Your price after any sale or coupon you run most of the time
  • Orders last month for this listing or this shop
  • Orders attributed to Offsite Ads (Marketing, then Offsite Ads)
  • Etsy Ads spend for the month (Marketing, then Etsy Ads)
  • Refunds you issued, as a share of orders
  • Monthly cost of design tools, mockups and other subscriptions
Six steps from price to profit
  1. 1
Enter the item price and sales per month

Use the price buyers actually pay. Expected result: monthly profit, kept per sale and the fee lines appear at once.

  2. 2
    Set your Offsite Ads share

Attributed orders divided by total orders. Tick the $10k box if your shop has passed $10,000 in a 365-day period, which switches the rate from 15% to 12%.

  3. 3
Add Etsy Ads spend and tools

Both are monthly dollar amounts. They come out after the per-sale fees, so they lower profit but not the kept-per-sale figure.

  4. 4
    Add a refund allowance

A percentage of sales. Leave it at 0 if you have never refunded an order.

  5. 5
Set a profit goal and a target margin

The calculator returns the sales the goal needs and the lowest price that reaches the margin.

  6. 6
    Copy the summary

One button copies every line as text, ready for a spreadsheet or a pricing note.

The Load example button fills in an $8 item with 60 sales, a 10% Offsite Ads share, $45 of Etsy Ads, $15 of tools and a 2% refund allowance. It is a quick way to see how the outputs react before you put your own shop in.

How much does Etsy take per sale? The formula behind the tool

On a plain digital sale a US shop gives up 9.5% of the price plus $0.45. That is three fees added together, and the calculator adds two more lines that depend on your shop.

Two details in that table are easy to get wrong by hand. The listing fee is a per-sale cost, because Etsy's policy says a listing is renewed at $0.20 after each item sells. And the Offsite Ads line is an average: one attributed order pays the full 15%, so a 20% share works out to 3% of the price across all sales.

Etsy fee calculator for digital downloads: a worked example

Here is the calculator run on a made-up shop: a $12 digital planner, 80 sales a month, 20% of them through Offsite Ads at 15%, $40 of Etsy Ads, $13 of tools and a 2% refund allowance. These inputs are illustrative. They show the mechanics, not what a planner shop earns.

The month works out as 80 × $9.84 = $787.20, less $53 of ads and tools, for a profit of $734.20. That is 76.5% of revenue, five and a half points below the 82% kept per sale. The gap is the ads and tools, and it widens every time you raise the ad budget without raising sales.

The other outputs for the same inputs: a $1,000 profit goal needs 108 sales, the shop covers its ads and tools after 6 sales, break-even ROAS is 1.22, and the lowest price that still keeps 80% per sale is $7.83.

Reading the six outputs

Each output answers a different question, and only one of them is about this month.

OutputFormulaWhat it tells you
Monthly profitNet per sale × sales − Etsy Ads − toolsThe headline: what is left after every cost you entered
Kept per salePrice − fees per saleThe margin on one sale, in dollars and as a percentage
Sales for your goal(Goal + Etsy Ads + tools) ÷ net per saleHow many sales a month the goal needs, rounded up
Price for target marginLowest price that keeps your target % per saleWhether your current price sits above or below it
Break-even sales(Etsy Ads + tools) ÷ net per saleSales needed before the month stops losing money
Break-even ROASPrice ÷ net per saleThe ROAS your Etsy Ads must beat to pay for themselves

Break-even ROAS is the one sellers skip. ROAS is ad revenue divided by ad spend, and Etsy lists it among the metrics on your Etsy Ads performance page. If the dashboard shows a figure below the calculator's break-even, each ad-driven sale is costing more than it brings in. Etsy's policy adds one useful overlap rule: when a buyer's last click before ordering is an Etsy Ad, only the Etsy Ads fee applies, not the Offsite Ads fee as well.

Etsy profit calculator for printables: where the margin moves

Price and traffic source move the margin far more than anything else you can type in. Etsy's fees take about 21% of a $4 printable and about 11% of a $25 bundle, and the whole difference is the fixed $0.45. Offsite Ads take a further 12 or 15 points from any order they touch.

This is why the target-margin box matters for cheap files. With no ads or refunds, any price from $4.29 up keeps 80% per sale. Add the example shop's Offsite Ads share and refund rate and that floor rises to $7.83. If your printables sit under the floor, bundling several into one listing pays the fixed fee once instead of several times. Our digital product pricing calculator helps with the price itself, and the guide to Etsy coupons for digital products shows how discounts change the price you should enter.

What the number ignores

Two of those cut in your favour. If you send your own followers through Share & Save links, those orders cost four points less than the calculator shows. And the refund line is slightly conservative: Etsy Help says transaction and processing fees on a refunded order are returned to your payment account, while the calculator treats the fixed $0.25 as spent along with the listing fee.

The larger gap is the sales box. The calculator multiplies whatever number you type, and it has no way of knowing whether a listing can reach it. Treat the result as a pricing check and a way to compare scenarios, not as a forecast.

Which of our calculators to use when

A margin only matters once something is selling. Our Digital Products program picks up where the calculator stops: validating an idea before you build it, pricing it, and the launch and paid advertising lessons that decide what goes in the sales box.

Etsy profit margin calculator: FAQ

How much does Etsy take per sale on a digital product?

A US shop pays a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% plus $0.25 for payment processing on each digital sale. That adds up to 9.5% of the price plus $0.45, or $1.59 on a $12 file. If the order is attributed to an Offsite Ad, Etsy adds 15% of the order, or 12% for shops past $10,000 in sales. Checked October 2026.

Is the Etsy profit margin calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no signup and no email gate. You enter a price and monthly sales, then optionally your Offsite Ads share, Etsy Ads spend, tool subscriptions and a refund allowance. It returns profit per month, what you keep per sale, the sales a goal needs, the lowest price for a target margin and break-even ROAS, and you can copy the summary as text.

Does the calculator work for printables and other cheap digital downloads?

Yes, and that is where it is most useful. Etsy charges a fixed $0.45 on every US sale whatever the price, so a $4 printable keeps about 79% while a $25 bundle keeps about 89%. The calculator shows that share for your price and reports the lowest price that still reaches the margin per sale you set as a target.

What is a good profit margin for digital products on Etsy?

There is no official benchmark, so use the fee ceiling as your reference. A plain US sale can never keep more than 90.5% because 9.5% goes in percentage fees, and the fixed $0.45 pulls cheap items below that. A $12 file keeps about 87% before ads, refunds and tools. If your result is far below the ceiling for your price, the calculator shows which line is taking it.

How do I work out break-even ROAS for Etsy Ads?

Divide your price by what you keep per sale after fees. A $12 file that keeps $9.84 has a break-even ROAS of 1.22, meaning every dollar of Etsy Ads spend has to bring back at least $1.22 in sales to cover itself. Compare that figure with the ROAS in your Etsy Ads dashboard. The calculator works it out from your own inputs.

Does the calculator include sales tax, VAT or income tax?

No. Etsy collects sales tax and VAT from the buyer on most orders, and that money is never your revenue. Income tax depends on where you live, so the calculator leaves it out. One related cost is also left out: Etsy charges its processing fee on the order total including sales tax, so a taxed order costs a few cents more than the result shows.
