Quick answer

To make a digital planner, build each page as a slide in Keynote or PowerPoint, link the tab shapes to their slides, export a PDF that keeps the links and test every tab in Goodnotes on a tablet. The export is where links disappear: PowerPoint for Mac drops them in an ordinary PDF save and Canva drops them when you flatten. Goodnotes had paused new Marketplace creator applications when we checked in October 2026.

To make a digital planner, build every page as a slide in Keynote or PowerPoint, turn the tab shapes into links to other slides, export the file as a PDF that keeps those links, and test every tab inside Goodnotes on a tablet before you sell it. A digital planner is an ordinary PDF. The links are what make it a product, and the export is the step that can remove them without telling you.

Steps checked October 2026 against Apple's Keynote guide on links, linked objects, slide size and export; Microsoft's pages on slide hyperlinks, slide size, saving as PDF and accessible PDFs; Canva on hyperlinks; Goodnotes support on PDF hyperlinks, Read Only Mode and importing files; the Goodnotes creator page; Apple's design tips and iPad Pro tech specs. The company now writes its name Goodnotes; many buyers still search GoodNotes.

By the end you will have a hyperlinked PDF, a record of every tab you tested, and a clear view of where you can sell it. This page is the build. The decisions that come first, such as printable or digital, dated or undated and how many pages, are in how to make a planner to sell, and the wider process of validating and pricing any product is in our guide to creating a digital product.

What you need before you start

Prerequisites
  • A page map: every page type, in order, with a count. A dated weekly planner for 2027 is 68 pages
  • Keynote, PowerPoint or Canva
  • A tablet with Goodnotes installed, and a stylus
  • A desktop PDF reader for the first check
  • A 2027 calendar open beside you if the planner is dated
  • A second device on another platform if you plan to claim it works there
  • A plain list for logging failed links: page, tab, where it went

Keynote, PowerPoint or Canva: which tool keeps the links

Use the tool you already have, and learn its export behaviour before you build 68 pages in it. All three can link one page to another. They differ in what the PDF keeps.

ToolHow a page link is addedPDF exportWhat the vendor says about links in the PDF
Keynote (Mac)Control-click the object, Add Link, Slide, enter a slide numberFile, Export To, PDFApple documents both steps and does not say whether slide links carry over. Test the file
PowerPoint for WindowsInsert, Link, Insert Link, Place in This DocumentFile, Export, Create PDF/XPS DocumentMicrosoft's page does not say either way. Test the file
PowerPoint for MacInsert, Link, This DocumentExport as PDF with "Best for electronic distribution and accessibility"Kept on objects only with that option. An ordinary PDF save drops them
PowerPoint for the webInsert, Link, This PresentationFile, Export, Download as PDFMicrosoft: these PDFs "preserve hyperlinks"
CanvaMore, Link, Pages in this documentShare, Download, PDF, Flatten PDF offCanva: links work in a PDF "except flattened PDFs"

The Mac row is the one that catches people. Microsoft's save-as-PDF page states that "PowerPoint for macOS doesn't preserve hyperlinks in PDFs" and suggests opening the file in PowerPoint for the web and downloading the PDF from there. Its accessibility page adds that the Mac app keeps hyperlinks on objects only when you select the online conversion option.

How to make a digital planner: the eight-step build

From blank slide to linked PDF
  1. 1
    Set one landscape slide size

A custom size between 4:3 and 3:2, used for every page.

  2. 2
    Create every destination page first

Blank slides in page-map order, so each link has somewhere to go.

  3. 3
Build the tab bar from shapes

One shape per tab, in the same position on every page type.

  4. 4
Link each tab to its slide

Add the link to the shape, not to the text inside it.

  5. 5
    Duplicate the linked page

Copies carry the tab bar, so you link it once per page type.

  6. 6
    Add the date-level links

Month to day, month to week, week to day, and the way back up.

  7. 7
    Click-test inside the tool

Follow every link before you export anything.

  8. 8
Export a PDF that keeps links

The setting depends on the tool. Then open the file and click a tab.

Step 1: set one landscape slide size

In Keynote, open the Document sidebar, select the pop-up menu under Slide Size, choose Custom Slide Size, enter the dimensions and select OK. In PowerPoint, go to Design, Slide Size, then Custom Slide Size on Windows or Page Setup on Mac, and type the width and height with a unit such as in or cm.

Goodnotes sets no page size for an imported PDF, so choose for the screen. Apple lists the 13-inch iPad Pro at 2752 by 2064 pixels, a 4:3 shape, and the 11-inch at 2420 by 1668, about 1.45 to 1. A page between 4:3 and 3:2 fills both without large empty bands. One warning for PowerPoint: its "Letter Paper" and "A4 Paper" presets are not those paper sizes. Microsoft lists them as 10 by 7.5 inches and 10.833 by 7.5 inches.

Expected result: one empty landscape slide at the size every page will use.

Step 2: create every destination page first

Add blank slides until the count matches your page map, in final order: cover, index, year, months, weeks, days, extras. A slide link points at a slide, so the target has to exist before you can choose it. Label each blank slide with its name so you can see what a link opened.

Expected result: the slide count equals the page-map count. Fix the order now. Reordering after linking is how tabs end up opening the wrong month.

Hyperlinked planner tutorial: linking the tabs

Steps 3 and 4: draw the tab bar, then link it

Draw one shape per tab: twelve months, the year overview and the index. In Keynote, Control-click a tab shape, choose Add Link, then Slide, enter the number of the slide it should open, and use Go to Slide to confirm the destination. In PowerPoint for Windows, select the shape, choose Insert, Link, Insert Link, select Place in This Document and pick the slide.

Link the shape, not the word on it, and make the shape big enough for a fingertip. Apple's design tips say touch controls should "measure at least 44 points x 44 points", roughly a third of an inch on a full-size iPad. A planner page is scaled to the screen, so the reliable check is on the device: if you miss a tab with a finger, it is too small.

Expected result: one finished page whose 14 tabs each open the right slide.

Step 5: duplicate the linked page

Finish one page of each type, with its tab bar linked, and duplicate it for the rest of that type. Then check the first few copies before you make fifty. If the copies did not keep their links, you want to learn that on page three.

Expected result: every page carries a working tab bar, and you linked it once per page type, not once per page.

Step 6: add the date-level links

Work one month at a time with the calendar beside you. On the monthly page, link each date to its daily page and each week row to its weekly page. On the weekly page, link each day heading to its daily page. On each daily page, add a link back to its week and its month. In an undated planner the date cells stay empty and only the tab bar and section links are needed.

Expected result: no page is a dead end. Apple gives the same advice for linked presentations: make sure each slide contains a link.

Step 7: click-test inside the tool

Keynote has a mode built for this. In the Document tab, set the presentation type to Links Only, which Apple describes as changing slides "only when the viewer clicks a link", then play the presentation and navigate by tabs alone. In PowerPoint, right-click a link in Normal view and choose Open Hyperlink.

Expected result: you can reach every page type from the index using links only. Fixing a link here takes seconds. After export it means a new file and a new test.

Step 8: export a PDF that keeps the links

  • Keynote. File, Export To, PDF. Choose an image quality (higher quality means a larger file), leave presenter notes off, then Save and Export.
  • PowerPoint for Windows. File, Export, Create PDF/XPS Document, Create PDF/XPS, with Optimize for set to Standard, then Publish.
  • PowerPoint for Mac. File, Export, PDF, and select "Best for electronic distribution and accessibility (uses Microsoft online service)". Or save to OneDrive, open in PowerPoint for the web and use File, Export, Download as PDF.
  • Canva. Share, Download, PDF, with Flatten PDF off.

Expected result: a PDF whose page count matches the page map and whose tabs respond in a desktop reader. Note the file size. Etsy accepts 20MB per file, and Goodnotes limits free accounts on Android, Windows and web to 5MB per import.

Digital planner tutorial for Goodnotes: import and link behaviour

Goodnotes supports exactly this kind of file. Its support page says hyperlinks in imported PDFs "can open another page in the document or an external website" and uses a digital planner as the example. It adds a condition: "The hyperlink must already exist in the imported PDF." That is why the export matters. To import, select New in the Documents tab, then Import, and choose the file.

How a buyer opens a link in Goodnotes
iPad and iPhone
  • Select the linked tab, date or image
  • If a tap draws a stroke instead, switch to Read Only Mode
  • Read Only Mode hides the writing toolbar until you switch back
  • Files can also be opened from another app with Open in Goodnotes
Android, Windows and web
  • Enter Read Only Mode, then select the link
  • Or stay in Edit Mode: press and hold, then Open Link
  • Free accounts import files up to 5MB
  • Free accounts are limited to three notebooks

Those two columns are your instructions page. A buyer on a Windows tablet who taps a tab and gets a pen stroke will assume the planner is broken unless you told them about Read Only Mode first.

The QA pass: every tab, tested on a tablet

Buyers judge a digital planner in the first minute, by tapping. One dead tab reads as a careless product, however good the layout is. Run the passes in order and log every failure with the page number, the tab and where it went.

Five passes before the file is for sale
  1. Pass 1
    Desktop reader

Page count matches the page map. Every tab on the index responds. This proves the links exist in the PDF.

  2. Pass 2
    Tab bar, on the tablet

Import into Goodnotes. On the first, a middle and the last page of each page type, tap all 14 tabs.

  3. Pass 3
    Date links

On each monthly page, tap every date and every week row and confirm the page that opens. All twelve months.

  4. Pass 4
    The way back

From one daily page in each month, return to its week and its month. Check that no page is a dead end.

  5. Pass 5
    Second platform and writing

Repeat pass 2 in Read Only Mode on Android, Windows or web if you will claim them. Then write next to a tab with a stylus.

Fix failures in the source file, never in the PDF, then export again and rerun passes 1 and 2 on the new file plus the pages that failed. A re-export is a new file, and the old test results do not transfer to it.

Claim only what you tested. Goodnotes documents its link behaviour. Notability's help center documents an outline panel for PDFs with a table of contents, and we found no page describing tap-through links, so put its name on the listing only after you have run the passes there yourself.

Make a Goodnotes planner to sell: Etsy, your own store and the Marketplace

You can sell the PDF anywhere that delivers a file. Goodnotes also runs its own Marketplace inside the app, which is a different arrangement: you apply, sign a commission contract and upload through its Creator Studio.

Marketplace questionWhat Goodnotes says (checked October 2026)
Who can applyAnyone who has created their own digital stationery, such as planners, templates or study tools
HowA sign-up form with your product. Goodnotes says it reviews applications within 10 business days
Status of the formIn October 2026 the form said: "We have an influx of applicants and are temporarily pausing taking application."
After approvalA commission contract, then access to Creator Studio to upload. Onboarding typically takes two to three weeks
PayA commission on each sale at the rate in your contract, paid quarterly by bank transfer
ExclusivityNot required. You can sell the same planner elsewhere
Not supportedFonts and handwriting tools

Treat the Marketplace as a later channel, not the launch plan. The application form was closed to new submissions when we checked, and the terms that matter most, the commission rate, are in a contract you only see after approval. Etsy, a storefront or your own site need no approval; where to sell digital products compares them.

Package it for sale
  • The planner PDF, named so a buyer knows what it is: weekly-planner-2027-monday-start.pdf
  • File size under 20MB for Etsy, and under 5MB if free Goodnotes users on Android, Windows and web should be able to import it
  • An instructions PDF: how to import, how links open on each platform, what Read Only Mode is
  • The apps and devices you tested on, with the month you tested
  • Licence terms: personal use, no resale or sharing of the file
  • Listing images that show the tab bar and one page of each type
  • Dated or undated, and the week start, in the listing title
  • Any stickers in the bundle drawn by you: Canva does not allow clipart made from its elements to be sold

For the licence wording, adapt our terms of use template for digital products, and run the price through the free Etsy profit margin calculator before you list. If you also want a paper version of the same layout, that is a separate file with different settings, covered in how to make printables to sell.

A planner that passes every tap is finished as a file, not as a business. Our Digital Products program covers the other half: validating the buyer with a pre-sell before you build, then pricing, the funnel and the launch.

Troubleshooting

  • No links work anywhere. The export removed them. Check the tool table above, export again, and click a tab in a desktop reader before importing.
  • Links work on desktop, not in Goodnotes. On Android, Windows or web, switch to Read Only Mode. On iPad, if a tap draws a stroke, do the same.
  • One tab opens the wrong page. Slides were added or moved after linking. Recount against the page map and relink that tab on the template.
  • A whole page type has dead tabs. That template was duplicated before it was linked. Link one, then replace the copies.
  • The file will not import. A free Goodnotes account on Android, Windows or web refuses files over 5MB. Lower the image quality on export or remove images.

Making a digital planner: FAQ

How do I make a digital planner?

Build each planner page as a slide in Keynote or PowerPoint, or as a page in Canva. Draw the tabs as shapes, link each tab to the slide it should open, and duplicate the linked page across the planner. Add the date-level links, export the file as a PDF with the links intact, import it into Goodnotes on a tablet and test every tab before you list it.

Can I make a Goodnotes planner in Keynote?

Yes. Keynote lets you Control-click any object, choose Add Link, then Slide, and enter the slide number it should open. You then export with File, Export To, PDF. Apple's user guide documents both steps but does not say whether slide links carry into the PDF, so treat the export as unproven until you have tapped the tabs inside Goodnotes on a tablet. Checked October 2026.

Does PowerPoint keep hyperlinks when you save as PDF?

It depends on the version. Microsoft says PDFs downloaded from PowerPoint for the web preserve hyperlinks. PowerPoint for Mac only preserves hyperlinks on objects when you pick "Best for electronic distribution and accessibility" in the export dialog, and an ordinary PDF save drops them. Microsoft's page for Windows does not say either way, so test the exported file. Checked October 2026.

Do planner hyperlinks work in Goodnotes on Android and Windows?

Yes, with one extra step. Goodnotes support says that on Android, Windows and web you enter Read Only Mode and then select the linked element, or stay in Edit Mode, press and hold the link and choose Open Link. On iPad and iPhone you select the link directly. Free accounts on Android, Windows and web can only import files up to 5MB. Checked October 2026.

Can I sell my planner on the Goodnotes Marketplace?

Possibly, but not right now. Goodnotes says anyone who has made their own digital stationery can apply, that it reviews applications within 10 business days and that creators earn a commission without exclusivity. In October 2026 its sign-up form said it was temporarily pausing applications because of volume. Etsy and your own store do not need approval.

What size should a digital planner be?

There is no required size. Goodnotes opens whatever page the PDF contains. A landscape page between 4:3 and 3:2 suits tablets: Apple lists the 13-inch iPad Pro at 2752 by 2064 pixels, which is 4:3, and the 11-inch at 2420 by 1668, which is about 1.45 to 1. Pick one size for the whole planner and keep the tab bar in the same place on every page.

Why are the links in my digital planner not working?

There are four usual causes. The PDF was flattened on export, which removes links in Canva. It was saved from PowerPoint for Mac without the online conversion option. The link was never added to that page before it was duplicated. Or the buyer is tapping in Edit Mode on Android, Windows or web, where Goodnotes needs Read Only Mode or a press and hold.
