To make a planner to sell, choose printable or digital first, write a page map, design one template per page type, then duplicate, date, link and export. A dated daily planner for 2027 is 433 pages and about 7,600 links; an undated printable set is 10 to 30 pages. Start undated, and never sell one file for both jobs: the print export removes the links a digital planner needs.
To make a planner to sell, pick the format first (a printable PDF, a hyperlinked digital PDF for tablet apps, or both), write the page map before you design anything, build one template per page type, then duplicate, date, link and export. The format decides the workload: a dated daily planner for 2027 runs to 433 pages before extras, while an undated printable set can be ten.
Tool steps and limits checked October 2026 against Canva's help pages on hyperlinks, flattened PDFs, download file types and designing products for sale, Goodnotes support on PDF hyperlinks and importing files, Notability's page on PDF outlines and Etsy's digital listings rules. Page and link counts are our arithmetic from the 2027 calendar. Margins are working practice, not platform rules.
By the end you will have a page map, a decision on dated or undated, a link map if the planner is digital, and files ready to list. Planners are one product type among many, and our guide to creating a digital product covers validation, pricing and licensing for all of them. This page stays on the planner.
Printable or digital planner: two products, not two exports
A printable planner is paper waiting to happen: portrait pages the buyer prints, punches and writes on. A digital planner is closer to an app: one landscape PDF with tabs that jump between pages, written on with a stylus inside a note-taking app such as Goodnotes. They can share a layout idea. They share almost nothing else.
- Portrait pages at US Letter and A4, often A5 too
- The buyer prints only the pages they need
- Navigation is a binder: no links
- A small set: 10 to 30 templates is a full product
- Exported flattened, at 300 DPI, for paper
- Fails on wrong paper size and tight margins
- One landscape page size for a tablet screen
- Every page ships: the whole year is in one file
- Navigation is hyperlinks: tabs, index, back links
- A large file: a dated daily build passes 400 pages
- Exported with links intact, never flattened
- Fails on dead tabs and heavy files
What you need before you start
- One buyer and the routine they are planning: a nursing student's term, a household's budget week
- The page types that buyer needs: month, week, day, plus two or three extras
- A decision on format: printable, digital, or both as separate files
- A design tool with page links if you are going digital: Canva, Keynote or PowerPoint
- A tablet with a note-taking app, for testing a digital planner
- A printer, a hole punch and a ruler, for testing a printable
- A 2027 calendar open beside you if the planner is dated
How to make a planner to sell: the eight steps
- 1Pick the buyer and the format
Printable, digital, or both as separate files.
- 2Write the page map
Every page type, in order, with a count beside it.
- 3Choose dated or undated
And a Monday or Sunday week start. Each combination is its own file.
- 4Set the page size
Portrait Letter and A4 for print. One landscape page for tablets.
- 5Design one template per page type
Month, week, day and extras, with the same strip reserved for tabs on each.
- 6Assemble the full document
Duplicate the templates into page-map order, then add the dates.
- 7Link it or flatten it
Digital: add page links, export with Flatten PDF off. Printable: export PDF Print, flattened.
- 8Test like a buyer, then package
Print and punch the printable. Tap every tab of the digital file on a tablet.
Step 1 is the comparison above. The rest of this page takes the other seven in order.
Step 2: the page map, and what each build costs in pages
Write the page list before you open a design tool, because the count decides everything after it: how long the build takes, how many links you place, and how heavy the file is.
| Build | Page formula | Pages | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dated daily, 2027 | 3 + 12 months + 53 weeks + 365 days | 433 | The complete product. Rebuilt every year |
| Dated weekly, 2027 | 3 + 12 months + 53 weeks | 68 | About a sixth of the pages. A sensible first dated product |
| Undated daily | 3 + 12 x (1 month + 5 weeks + 31 days) | 447 | Built once, correct in any year |
| Undated weekly | 3 + 12 x (1 month + 5 weeks) | 75 | The lightest digital build |
| Printable set | 1 month + 1 week + 1 day + extras | 10 to 30 | The buyer prints copies, so each template appears once |
The 3 in each formula is the cover, the index and the year overview. The 53 is not a typo: 2027 starts and ends on a Friday, so 53 calendar weeks touch the year whether your week starts on Sunday or Monday. Count the weeks from the real calendar every year.
Expected result: a one-line page map you can check a file against, such as "cover, index, year, 12 months, 53 weeks, 6 notes pages, 4 goal pages: 78 pages".
Step 3: dated or undated?
Start undated, then add a dated edition from the same templates once the layout has sold. An undated planner can be listed today and stays correct in any year. A dated one can only be sold before and during the year it covers, and it is rebuilt every year. In exchange it arrives finished: the buyer opens it and the dates are already there.
Start in the highlighted corner, then move down or left once the layout sells.
Dated planners also split by week start. Monday-start and Sunday-start are different page layouts, not a setting, so each is its own file. Say which one it is in the title of the listing.
Expected result: one line added to the page map: "undated, Monday start" or "dated 2027, Sunday start".
Steps 4 to 6: page size, templates and assembly
Printable. Build portrait pages at US Letter and A4 as two designs, and A5 as a third if the planner is meant for a ring binder. Keep half an inch clear on three sides and three-quarters of an inch on the binding edge, then punch a test print to confirm nothing important sits under a hole. Those are our working numbers. The two-size workflow, export settings and print test are in our tutorial on making printables to sell.
Digital. No app sets a required page size for a planner PDF; it opens the page you export. Use one landscape page, so the tabs can run along the top and one side and the page fills a tablet held sideways. Build with shapes and text rather than photos and paper textures, because file weight is a real constraint: Goodnotes limits free users on Android, Windows and web to 5MB per imported file (checked October 2026).
Templates. Design each page type once: month, week, day, and the extras. Reserve the same strip for tabs on every one, even in a printable, where it becomes a section label. A buyer flips or taps between page types constantly, and a tab bar that shifts by a few millimetres between them reads as a mistake.
Assembly. Duplicate the templates into the order of the page map, then add the dates from the calendar, one month at a time. If the planner is digital, link the tab bar on each template before you duplicate it, which the next section explains.
Expected result: a document whose page count matches the page map exactly. Check the number before you add a single date-level link.
Step 7: the hyperlink architecture of a digital planner
A digital planner needs three kinds of link: a tab bar on every page, a drill-down path from the year to a single day, and a way back up from every page. If any one is missing, the buyer ends up scrolling, which is the thing they paid not to do.
- 01Index
Opens the year overview, every month and every extra section.
- 02Year overview
Each month name opens its monthly page.
- 03Month
Each date opens its day. Each week row opens its week.
- 04Week
Each day heading opens its daily page.
- 05Day
Links back up to its week and its month.
- 06Tab bar
On every page: twelve months, year and index, one tap from anywhere.
Two rules hold the structure together. Every page is reachable in two taps from any other page: one tab, then one date. And no page is a dead end: each one carries the tab bar, so there is always a way out.
| Page type | Links it carries | Links in a dated daily 2027 build |
|---|---|---|
| Every page (tab bar) | 12 month tabs, year overview, index | 14 x 433 = 6,062 |
| Month | One per date, one per week row | 365 + 61 = 426 |
| Week | One per day heading | 365 |
| Day | Back to its week and its month | 365 x 2 = 730 |
| Whole planner | Monday week start | 7,583 |
Nobody places 7,583 links one at a time. Four in five of them are the tab bar, so link the tabs on a finished template first and then duplicate it; check that the copies kept their links before you make hundreds. The date-level links are placed by hand, a month at a time. A dated weekly build needs about a thousand links in total, nearly all of them tabs.
In Canva, select the tab shape, select More on the floating toolbar, then Link, and choose the destination under Pages in this document. Link the whole shape, not the text inside it, so the target is the size of a fingertip. When you download, choose PDF and leave Flatten PDF off. Keynote and PowerPoint do the same job with slide links, and each has an export quirk worth knowing before you commit to it. Our digital planner tutorial takes that build step by step, including the tab-by-tab test.
Expected result: a PDF in which every tab and date responds to a click in a desktop reader. That proves the links exist. It does not prove they work for a buyer, which is the next step.
Step 8: test like a buyer, then package the listing
Test in the place the product will be used. For a printable that is paper and a hole punch. For a digital planner it is a tablet, in the app you plan to name in the listing.
Goodnotes documents how PDF links open: on iPad and iPhone the buyer selects the linked element, and on Android, Windows and web they enter Read Only Mode first, or press and hold the link in Edit Mode and choose Open Link. Put that in your instructions page. Notability's help center documents an outline panel for PDFs that contain a table of contents, but we found no page describing tap-through links, so test there yourself before you put its name on a listing.
- The page count matches the page map
- Printable: Letter and A4 files printed at 100% and hole-punched without losing content
- Printable: lines and boxes are large enough to write in with a pen
- Digital: every tab opens the right page, tested on a tablet and not only in a desktop reader
- Digital: every date on every monthly page opens the matching day
- Digital: no dead ends; every page has a way back to its month and the index
- Dated: each month checked against a real calendar, including the week start
- File size: under 20MB for Etsy, and under 5MB if you want free Goodnotes users on Android, Windows and web
- An instructions page names the app, explains how links open and states the licence
- The listing says printable or digital, dated or undated, the week start and the apps you tested
On Etsy, a planner is a digital item with instant download: up to five files of 20MB each, and no variations, so paper sizes and week-start versions are separate files or separate listings. Keep the printable and the digital planner in separate listings. They are bought by different people for different reasons, and a buyer who wanted paper and received a hyperlinked landscape PDF asks for their money back.
Before you set the price, run it through the free Etsy profit margin calculator, and read how to price a digital product for the logic behind the number. If the buyer is still vague, printable niches to sell has planner niches defined by a person and a moment, and the printables business guide covers the listing itself.
A planner that works is a template for the next five. Our Digital Products program covers what turns one file into a catalog: validating the buyer before you build, a template creation lesson for Canva and Notion, then pricing, the funnel and the launch.
Troubleshooting
- The tabs do nothing. The PDF was flattened on export, or the links were never added to that template before it was duplicated. Re-export with Flatten PDF off.
- A tab opens the wrong month. Pages were added or reordered after linking. Recheck the page count against the page map, then retest every tab.
- A buyer cannot import the file. On a free Goodnotes account on Android, Windows or web, files over 5MB are refused. Reduce images or offer a lighter version.
- The holes punch through the text. The binding margin is too narrow. Widen it and move the content, not the holes.
- The dates sit under the wrong weekday. A Sunday-start grid was filled from a Monday-start calendar, or the reverse.
Making a planner to sell: FAQ
How do I make a planner to sell?
Pick the format first: a printable PDF, a hyperlinked digital PDF for tablet apps, or both as separate files. Write a page map that lists every page type and its count, design one template per page type, duplicate the templates into order, then add dates. A printable is exported flattened at 300 DPI. A digital planner gets page links and is exported with flattening off. Test both the way a buyer would use them.
Can I make planners on Canva to sell?
Yes, if the layout is your own. Canva's help page allows original designs that use its Free and Pro Content to be sold as finished products buyers cannot edit, and does not allow selling its content on a standalone basis. Canva also supports page links: select an element, choose Link, and pick a page in the document. Links survive a PDF download unless you flatten it. Checked October 2026.
How many pages should a planner have?
It depends on the build. A dated daily planner for 2027 is 433 pages: a cover, an index, a year overview, 12 months, 53 weeks and 365 days. A dated weekly planner is 68. An undated weekly planner with five weeks per month is 75. A printable set is far smaller, usually 10 to 30 templates, because the buyer prints as many copies of each page as they need.
Should I sell a dated or an undated planner?
Start undated. An undated planner can be listed any day of the year and never goes out of date, so one build keeps selling. A dated planner is a more finished product, but it can only be sold before and during the year it covers, and it must be rebuilt every year. Once an undated layout sells, produce the dated edition from the same templates.
What size should a planner be?
A printable planner needs US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches, and A4, 210 by 297 mm, as separate files, with A5 as an option for ring binders. A digital planner has no required size: tablet apps open whatever page the PDF contains. One landscape page is the practical choice, because tabs can run along the top and side and the page fills a tablet held sideways.
How do I sell a planner on Etsy?
List it as a digital item with instant download. Etsy allows up to five files of 20MB each per listing and does not offer variations on digital items, so paper sizes and week-start versions are separate files or separate listings. State in the first lines whether the planner is printable or digital, dated or undated, and which apps you tested it in. Checked October 2026.
What is the difference between a printable planner and a digital planner?
A printable planner is a set of portrait pages the buyer prints, punches and writes on with a pen. A digital planner is a single PDF used inside a tablet note-taking app, with hyperlinked tabs that jump between months, weeks and days. They need different page sizes, different page counts and opposite export settings, so they are two products, even when they share a design.
