To sell on Envato you need an approved author account, and in October 2026 Envato has paused open applications and invites Elements authors directly. Approved authors sell per item on Envato Market (a 50% author fee on the price they set) or earn a share of subscription revenue on Envato Elements, split by item usage. Both are non-exclusive, every item goes through review, and payouts run monthly above a $50 balance.
To sell on Envato, you apply to become an author, pass ID and tax checks, then upload items that pass Envato's review on Envato Market (single purchases) or Envato Elements (a subscription library). The catch in 2026: Envato has paused new author applications, so for most creators the real first step is preparing a portfolio for when intake reopens.
Checked in October 2026 against the Envato Author Help Center: Becoming an Envato Author FAQs, Introduction to Earnings, Understanding Earnings on Envato Elements, Review Process FAQs and the Envato Market Author Terms.
Envato is one of several places to sell design assets, templates, video templates, audio and code. It is unusual because it runs two very different business models side by side, and they reward different kinds of creators. This guide explains both, with the earnings math laid out step by step, so you can decide whether Envato belongs in your plan. For the wider comparison of marketplaces and your own store, see our hub on where to sell digital products.
Who Envato suits
Envato buyers are mostly creative professionals: video editors, web designers, developers, marketers and agencies. They want production-ready assets that save them time. That suits creators who make:
- Video templates for After Effects, Premiere Pro or Apple Motion, and stock footage.
- Graphic templates, fonts, mockups, icons and presentation templates.
- WordPress themes, web templates and code scripts.
- Music, sound effects and stock photos.
It suits creators less well if you make consumer printables, planners or Canva templates aimed at non-designers. Those buyers are on Etsy and similar marketplaces. Our guide to selling templates covers that route.
How to sell on Envato: the system end to end
- 01Apply or get invited
Open applications paused; Elements invites select categories
- 02Set up your profile
Tax info, payout details, trader declaration, ID check
- 03Upload items
Item files, presentation, title, tags, metadata
- 04Review
Approve, soft reject or hard reject
- 05Earn
Per sale on Market, subscriber share on Elements
- 06Payout
Monthly on the 15th, above a $50 balance
Envato's author FAQ lists the four profile steps you complete after approval and before your first upload: provide tax information, set up payout details, complete a trader declaration and verify your identity with an ID check. Items from an author who has not completed the ID check are not made available for sale.
Can you apply right now?
As of October 2026, no open application is available. The author FAQ says new author applications are paused until further notice with no confirmed reopening date, and that when they reopen, new authors will apply through a selective intake model for supported content types only. Envato's Become an Envato Author page says it is inviting authors directly for select categories where it needs more work.
That changes the plan for a new creator. Instead of uploading this week, build a portfolio that would pass review, sell it somewhere else in the meantime, and watch the author help center for reopening. Because Envato Market is non-exclusive, nothing you sell elsewhere now blocks you from listing it on Envato later.
Envato Market vs Envato Elements
| Envato Market | Envato Elements | |
|---|---|---|
| How buyers pay | Per item, at a price you set | Monthly or yearly subscription for unlimited downloads |
| What you earn | Item price minus a 50% author fee | Share of 50% of net base subscription revenue (25% Enterprise) |
| What drives earnings | Number of purchases and your price | How many subscribers use your items, and how many other items they use |
| Exclusivity | Non-exclusive | Non-exclusive distributor |
| Contribution expectation | No publishing requirement | At least one new item, or a major update, per quarter |
| How you join | Author application (paused) | Invitation for select categories |
Most content types are uploaded through Envato Market first and then selected for Elements, and only authors invited to Elements see that option. Graphics are the exception: invited authors upload them directly through the Elements Contributor Dashboard. Envato also runs Placeit, where you cannot apply directly; Elements authors' items may be selected for it, and Envato says authors generally share 20% of net revenue from a Placeit purchase or subscription download.
Envato Market earnings: the per-sale math
On Market, you set your item price under Envato's author-driven pricing. The buyer pays your item price plus a buyer fee that Envato sets. Envato then charges an Author Fee of 50% of your item price, and withholding tax may apply. Envato's own worked example in Introduction to Earnings uses a $13 item price, a $3 buyer fee and 10% withholding tax, and arrives at $5.20 earned per sale (checked October 2026).
- 1List price: $16
Your $13 item price plus the $3 buyer fee for that item type.
- 2Remove the buyer fee
$16 minus $3 leaves $13, your item price.
- 3Apply withholding tax
The example uses 10%, leaving $11.70. Your rate depends on your tax details.
- 4Subtract the 50% author fee
50% of the $13 item price is $6.50.
- 5Earnings: $5.20
Envato example figures, checked October 2026. Your numbers will differ.
How are Envato Elements author earnings calculated?
Elements uses what Envato calls the subscriber share model. Read it carefully, because it works differently from a per-download royalty.
- Each subscriber is a separate pool. Envato looks at each subscriber in turn and takes 50% of the net revenue from that subscriber's base subscription price (25% for Enterprise subscriptions).
- The pool is split by usage. That 50% is divided among the authors whose items that subscriber used, by each author's share of all item points the subscriber used in the period.
- Only the base price counts. Envato introduced higher pricing tiers from 25 February 2026 that add generative AI generations. The pricing tiers article says author share is still calculated on the base subscription price.
- Earnings follow the subscription start month. Downloads during a 30-day subscription period count toward the month the period started, so a month's earnings are final only once its last subscription period ends.
The practical lesson: on Elements, your earnings from a subscriber shrink as that subscriber downloads more items from everyone else. Items that heavy users need once in a while earn less per use than items that light users come to Elements specifically to get. That is why niche, high-utility assets can matter more than volume.
Envato says it aims to show the first partial earnings for a month once 40 days have passed, updates them daily after that, and that final monthly earnings can take up to two months. Plan your cash flow around that delay.
What is the Envato review process?
Every item goes through review against four areas Envato lists: item presentation (cover and preview images, live demos), item information and metadata (titles, tags, descriptions), technical requirements for the content type, and legal requirements (releases, licensed assets, no infringement). Envato says reviews can take up to 14 days in general, with some content types faster.
| Outcome | What it means | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | Published immediately | Promote it and plan updates |
| Soft-rejected | Needs minor changes; reviewer notes provided | Fix exactly what the notes say, then resubmit from Hidden Items |
| Hard-rejected | Not suitable for Envato; no feedback given | Do not resubmit; make a clearly different new item |
Envato warns that resubmitting hard-rejected items puts your upload rights at risk. Its list of common rejection reasons includes quality below its standard, low commercial utility, the wrong category, being too similar to existing items, resubmitting without changes, and copyright or intellectual property issues.
Does Envato require exclusivity?
No. The Market Author Terms say you make items available on a non-exclusive basis and keep the ability to sell them elsewhere, and the Elements Author Terms appoint Envato as a non-exclusive distributor. You can sell the same item on Envato and on your own store or another marketplace.
Read the rights section of the Elements Author Terms before you join. Among the rights authors grant, the terms include Envato's use of items to develop products and features, including to train artificial intelligence models. Decide whether that is acceptable for your work before you opt items into Elements.
A 90-day plan while intake is paused
- 1Weeks 1 to 2: study the category
Browse your category on Market and Elements, note what is popular and what is missing.
- 2Weeks 3 to 6: build three strong items
Production-ready, documented and different from what already exists.
- 3Weeks 7 to 8: package to Envato standards
Cover and preview images, clean folder structure, help file, licensed assets only.
- 4Weeks 9 to 12: sell them elsewhere
Your own store or another marketplace, non-exclusively, to learn what buyers want.
- 5Ongoing: watch for reopening
Check the author help center and apply with the portfolio once intake opens.

Envato or your own store?
Envato gives you an audience of professional buyers you would struggle to reach alone, and it handles payments, licensing and delivery. In return it takes a large share of each sale, sets the licence terms, and decides through review which items go live. Your own store reverses each of those trade-offs: you keep more of each sale and control the terms, but you bring every buyer yourself.
Many asset creators run both. Because Envato is non-exclusive, you can list the same item on Market and sell an extended bundle, a newer version or a members-only set from your own store. A store on a platform such as Gumroad is quick to set up; our guide to selling digital products on Gumroad covers the setup. If you design UI kits, our Figma tutorial for digital products covers packaging and delivering Figma files outside a marketplace.
Payouts and tax
Envato processes payouts once a month on the 15th. To be paid that month you need a payout profile set up before the 8th and at least $50 in your balance; PayPal and bank transfer are supported, and providers such as Payoneer or Wise go through the bank transfer option. Withholding tax can differ between Market and Elements, and it is applied at payout. Complete your tax forms carefully, since they set the rate.
Mistakes that cost Envato authors
- Unlicensed assets inside items. Fonts, photos or music you are not licensed to redistribute are a legal rejection and a takedown risk later.
- Many near-identical items. Envato lists too many similar variations as a reason for removal.
- Weak presentation. Cover and preview images are part of review, not decoration.
- Resubmitting a hard rejection. It risks your upload rights.
- Ignoring the quarterly expectation on Elements. Envato expects most authors to publish at least one new item, or a major update for complex items, every 90 days.
Do this week
- Check the author help center for current intake status
- Read the Market and Elements Author Terms, including the rights section
- Pick one category and list ten items that sell well in it
- Audit every font, image and sound in your items for redistribution rights
- Draft a cover image and preview set for your best item
- List the item on a non-exclusive channel you control while you wait

Selling on Envato: FAQ
Can I become an Envato author right now?
Not through an open application. Envato's author help center says new author applications are paused until further notice, with no confirmed reopening date, and its Elements page says it is inviting authors directly for select categories (checked October 2026). When intake reopens, Envato says it will use a selective model for supported content types. Prepare a portfolio now so you are ready.
How are Envato Elements author earnings calculated?
Envato pays authors 50% of the net revenue from the base subscription price of each subscriber's plan (25% for Enterprise plans). For each subscriber, that pool is split among authors by their share of the item points that subscriber used in the period. Your earnings depend on how many subscribers use your items and how many other items each of them uses.
How much does Envato Market take per sale?
Envato charges an Author Fee of 50% of the item price you set, plus a buyer fee that is added on top of your price and fixed for categories with author-driven pricing. Withholding tax may also apply depending on your tax details. Envato's own worked example shows how list price, buyer fee, tax and author fee combine. Checked October 2026.
Does Envato require exclusivity?
No. The Envato Market Author Terms, last revised 1 July 2026, say you make items available on a non-exclusive basis and keep the right to sell them on other websites. The Elements Author Terms appoint Envato as a non-exclusive distributor. Read the full terms, including the rights you grant Envato over your items, before you upload.
How long does Envato review take?
Envato says reviews can take up to 14 days in general, with some content types processed faster, and that review times depend on demand and the queue. Items are approved, soft-rejected with feedback so you can fix and resubmit, or hard-rejected. Hard-rejected items get no feedback and must not be resubmitted. Checked October 2026.
When does Envato pay authors?
Payouts are processed on the 15th of each month. You need a payout profile set up before the 8th and at least $50 in your balance, according to Envato author help, checked October 2026. You can be paid by PayPal or bank transfer. Elements earnings take up to two months to finalize because each subscription period must finish first.
