Figma Tutorial for Digital Products: Templates and UI Kits

A Figma tutorial for digital products: build templates and UI kits, then sell them through Figma Community, Gumroad or Etsy, with delivery and copying limits.

Quick answer

Figma suits digital products that buyers keep editing in Figma, such as UI kits, wireframe kits and design-system templates, and it also exports printables and planners. Figma Community has paused approvals for new paid sellers, so most new sellers publish a free Community file for reach and sell the full version as a .fig or duplicate link on Gumroad, their own store or Etsy. Nothing technical stops buyers from copying a file, so your licence does the protecting.

This Figma tutorial for digital products covers the two things that matter: building a file buyers can actually use (components, styles and a clear page structure), and choosing how to sell and deliver it. Figma is the right tool when your buyer works in Figma too, which is why UI kits, wireframe kits and design-system templates are its strongest products.

Platform details checked in October 2026 against Figma Help: About selling Community resources, Publish files to the Figma Community, Community copyright and licensing and Save a local copy of files.

Most Figma tutorials teach interface design. Few cover selling the file, and that is where new sellers get stuck: the obvious marketplace, Figma Community, is closed to new paid sellers at the moment, and delivering a Figma file through Gumroad or Etsy raises questions about formats and copying. If you are still deciding what to make, our guide to creating a digital product covers choosing the product first.

What you will have at the end

  • A sellable Figma file with a cover page, a getting-started page and organized components.
  • A free Community version that works as a preview and lead magnet.
  • A delivery package for Gumroad, your own store or Etsy.
  • Licence terms that say what buyers can and cannot do.

Before you start

Pre-flight for a sellable Figma file
  • A product idea aimed at people who already use Figma (or exports for those who do not)
  • Fonts that are free to use or that buyers can get themselves; never bundle licensed fonts
  • Images and icons you made or that are licensed for redistribution in templates
  • A naming convention for pages, frames, components and styles
  • A decision on where you will sell: Community free tier plus a store, or exports only

Figma for digital product design: build the file

A template is only as good as its structure. Buyers judge a Figma product within minutes of opening it, and a tidy file reads as a professional one. Follow these steps in order.

Build a sellable Figma template
  1. 1
    Set up foundations first

Color, text and effect styles or variables before any screens. Expected result: a single source of truth for the look.

  2. 2
    Build components with auto layout

Buttons, inputs, cards, navigation. Use variants for states and sizes so buyers swap rather than rebuild.

  3. 3
    Assemble example screens

Real layouts made only from your components, showing how the kit fits together.

  4. 4
    Organize pages

Cover, Getting started, Foundations, Components, Examples. Name every layer that a buyer will touch.

  5. 5
    Write the getting-started page

What is inside, how to change the brand color, how to swap fonts, and your licence in plain words.

  6. 6
    Test as a buyer

Save a local copy, import it into a fresh account, and try to rebrand it in ten minutes.

The last step catches most problems. Figma's help page notes that when a local copy is imported, components become new main components and stop receiving updates from the original file. That is what your buyer gets, so test exactly that.

The UI-kit niche Canva sellers cannot reach

Canva templates compete on looks for non-designers. Figma products compete on structure for designers, developers and startup teams, a buyer group Canva sellers rarely reach. These buyers pay for saved hours: a component library that already handles states, a design system with tokens, a dashboard kit with real data patterns.

Canva template buyers want
  • A finished look to edit quickly
  • Drag-and-drop photos and text
  • Social posts, flyers, planners
  • No design training needed
Figma product buyers want
  • Components, variants and auto layout
  • Styles or variables they can rebrand
  • UI kits, wireframes, design systems
  • Files that hand off cleanly to developers

If your buyers are not designers, Figma can still be your design tool: export finished printables and planners as PDF or PNG and sell those. Our guide to selling templates covers products aimed at that wider audience.

How to sell Figma templates: the four routes

RouteWho can use itStrengthLimit
Figma Community (paid)Approved creators only; new approvals pausedFigma handles delivery, refunds and sales taxFirst page is a free preview; no team purchases
Figma Community (free)Anyone who can edit the fileDiscovery inside Figma; good lead magnetCC BY 4.0, so anyone can reuse it with credit
Gumroad or own storeAnyoneYou set price, licence and bundlesYou handle support; delivery is a .fig or a duplicate link
EtsyAnyoneSearch traffic from non-designers.fig must be zipped; best for exported printables

Figma Community (paid). Figma handles purchase support, delivery, refunds and sales tax for approved sellers. Its help page currently says it is not approving new creators to sell paid files (checked October 2026). For those already approved, files sell as one-time payments from $2 in whole US dollars, only the first page of a paid design file is visible before purchase, and payouts become available 30 US business days after a sale, at most once a week.

Figma Community (free). Anyone with edit access can publish a file, with up to five tags, a thumbnail and up to nine more images at a recommended 1920 x 1080. Free files are licensed CC BY 4.0, so others can reuse and adapt them commercially with credit. That makes a free file a strong lead magnet: publish a slice of the kit, and put a link to the full version in the description and on the cover page. Note that Figma says files already published as free cannot later be sold.

Gumroad or your own store. You set the price and the licence and can sell tiers (personal, team, extended). Our walkthrough of selling digital products on Gumroad covers the setup, and the Gumroad file size guide helps when a kit with images grows large.

Etsy. Etsy buyers are mostly not Figma users, so Etsy fits exported printables better than raw Figma files. Etsy's digital listings page lists supported file types, and .fig is not among them while .zip and .pdf are (checked October 2026), so zip a .fig or deliver a PDF with a link.

Figma for Etsy sellers: delivering the file

From master file to buyer
  1. 01
    Master file

Your working file, never shared directly

  2. 02
    Release copy

Duplicate, clean up, bump the version number

  3. 03
    Package

.fig via Save local copy, or a view link to the release copy

  4. 04
    Deliver

Zip plus a PDF guide on Etsy; download on Gumroad

  5. 05
    Update

New version, new package, email past buyers

Option one: a .fig file. Open the release copy, go to File, then Save local copy. The buyer drags the file into their Figma file browser. Figma treats it as a new file with no version history or comments. Figma also notes the .fig format is proprietary and may change, so tell buyers to import it with an up-to-date Figma.

Option two: a duplicate link. Share a view-only link to the release copy inside a PDF. The buyer opens it and duplicates it to their drafts. It is easier for buyers but easier to pass around, because a link works for anyone who has it.

Duplicate protection: what Figma can and cannot stop

Be realistic about copying. A duplicated file or an imported .fig is an independent copy; Figma does not track or lock it once it leaves your account. File owners can restrict viewers from copying and exporting, but a buyer who received an editable copy has full control of that copy.

Your protection is the licence. Paid Community files use Figma's Community Paid Resource License, which lets a buyer share the file with up to five editors and use it in unlimited outputs, but bans resale or redistribution. If you sell elsewhere, write equivalent terms on your getting-started page and product page. Our terms of use template for digital products is a starting point. Then compete on what copies lack: updates, support, documentation and a community of past buyers.

Pricing and licence tiers for Figma products

Designers buy Figma products for themselves, for a team or for client work, and those are three different levels of value. Selling outside Community lets you price them separately. A common structure is a personal licence for one designer, a team licence that allows a set number of editors, and an extended licence for use in products that are themselves sold. Write each tier in plain words on the product page and repeat it on the getting-started page inside the file, so the terms travel with the copy.

Check what comparable kits charge before setting numbers, and price the gap between tiers by how much more the buyer can do, not by how much more the file contains. The file is the same in every tier; the permission is what changes.

Keep the product alive with versioned updates

Updates are your best defence against copies and your best reason for past buyers to come back. Add a changelog frame to the getting-started page, bump a version number in the cover title each release, and keep a list of buyer emails so you can announce new components. Because imported files do not receive updates from your copy, every release means a new package: a fresh .fig or a fresh release-copy link. Plan releases around real improvements, such as new components, dark mode, or new example screens, rather than cosmetic tweaks.

Troubleshooting

  • Buyer sees missing fonts. List fonts on the getting-started page with where to get them, and prefer free fonts available in Figma.
  • Components do not update. Expected after an import; explain how to publish the components as a library in the buyer's team.
  • Save local copy is missing. Figma says this happens when the owner restricts copying and exporting; check the file's sharing settings.
  • Community preview gives away too much. On paid files only the first page shows before purchase, so keep the first page a curated preview.

Selling Figma products: FAQ

Can you sell Figma templates on Figma Community?

Only if Figma has already approved you as a seller. Figma help says it is not approving new creators to sell paid files on Community at this time (checked October 2026). Approved creators can sell files as one-time purchases from $2, in whole US dollars. New sellers can still publish free files to Community to build an audience and sell paid versions elsewhere.

How do I deliver a Figma file to a buyer on Gumroad or Etsy?

Two common ways. Save a local copy as a .fig file (File, then Save local copy) and deliver it as a download the buyer drags into their Figma file browser. Or deliver a PDF or text file containing a link to a view-only copy the buyer duplicates. On Etsy, .fig is not in the supported file list, so zip the file first.

Can buyers share my Figma template after buying it?

Technically yes. A duplicate or an imported .fig is an independent copy, so nothing in the file itself stops a buyer from passing it on. Protection comes from your licence terms and the platform policy, not from Figma. Paid Community files use the Community Paid Resource License, which bans resale and limits sharing to five editors.

What licence do free Figma Community files use?

Free Community files are published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0), according to Figma help, checked October 2026. That licence lets others share and adapt the file, including commercially, as long as they credit you. Publish only what you are happy to see reused, and keep your paid product meaningfully larger than the free version.

Is Figma or Canva better for selling templates?

They serve different buyers. Canva templates suit people who want to edit a finished design quickly, such as social posts, flyers or planners. Figma templates suit designers and developers who want components, variables, auto layout and design systems, such as UI kits, wireframe kits and app templates. Many sellers use Figma to design and Canva or PDF to deliver consumer products.

Can I sell Figma designs as printables on Etsy?

Yes. Figma exports frames as PNG, JPG, SVG or PDF, so you can design printables, planners and wall art in Figma and sell the exported files like any other digital download. Etsy allows up to five files of up to 20MB each per digital listing, checked October 2026. The Figma file itself stays with you; buyers receive only the exports.
