To sell social media templates, design original Instagram and Pinterest packs for one niche at the current platform sizes, deliver them as Canva template links (required if you use Canva Pro content) or as files, and sell on Etsy or your own store. The edge most sellers miss is maintenance: platforms change sizes and formats, so a pack you update on a schedule keeps selling while static ones go stale.
To sell social media templates, build original Instagram and Pinterest packs for a specific kind of account, size them to each platform's current specs, deliver them as Canva template links or editable files, and list them on Etsy or your own storefront. Then keep them current: every time a platform changes its sizes or adds a format, buyers need new templates, and the sellers who update first win those sales.
Rules and sizes checked October 2026 against Canva's guide to selling products made in Canva, Instagram's Help Center on photo resolution and aspect ratios, Pinterest's ad and pin specs, and Etsy's digital listings help.
Social templates are one of the most crowded template categories, and most listings treat them as a finished product: design once, list, forget. That is the opening. Platforms do not stand still, so a pack built for last year's sizes quietly becomes the wrong product. This guide treats a template shop as something you maintain, like software, and shows how to build that into your process. Can you sell Canva social templates? The licence rules
Canva's selling guide says you can sell templates, and its definition of templates explicitly includes designs for social networking websites (checked October 2026). Three conditions apply:
- Original design only. You cannot sell Canva content on a standalone basis. Recolouring or resizing a single Canva element does not make it yours.
- Pro content means template links only. Templates that include Canva Pro content can only be sold as Canva template links, not as PDFs or other file types, flattened or not.
- No stock content. You cannot use Canva content to make and sell your own stock assets, such as clip art or sticker files.
In practice most Canva sellers deliver a PDF that holds the template link, short instructions and a support contact. If you also want to sell PNG or PSD files, build those versions only from free content and your own work.
The sizes your templates must match right now
Instagram's photo resolution help says photos keep their resolution at widths up to 1080 pixels when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which means a height between 566 and 1440 pixels at 1080 wide; anything outside that range is cropped (checked October 2026). Pinterest's specs page recommends 2:3, or 1000 by 1500 pixels, for image pins and warns that taller pins can be cut off; its pin specs recommend 9:16 for full-screen video (checked October 2026).
| Format | Size | Why | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram feed post (tall) | 1080 x 1440 (3:4) | Tallest ratio Instagram keeps without cropping | help.instagram.com |
| Instagram feed post (portrait) | 1080 x 1350 (4:5) | Inside the supported range | help.instagram.com |
| Instagram square | 1080 x 1080 (1:1) | Inside the supported range | help.instagram.com |
| Instagram Story or Reel cover | 1080 x 1920 (9:16) | Full-screen vertical; keep text in the centre | Instagram Reels sizes help |
| Pinterest standard pin | 1000 x 1500 (2:3) | Taller pins may be cut off in feeds | help.pinterest.com |
| Pinterest video pin | 1080 x 1920 (9:16) | Recommended for full-screen video | help.pinterest.com |

Why format churn is the opportunity in an Instagram template packs business
Two recent changes show how fast a pack can go stale. In early 2025 Instagram switched profiles to a taller, rectangular grid, and covers designed for the old square grid no longer framed the way their designers intended. And in December 2025 Instagram's @creators account announced that Reels and feed posts allow up to five hashtags (checked October 2026), which changed what caption and hashtag templates should contain.
Each change is a reset. Buyers who own last year's pack need a new one, and searchers start looking for the new size by name. A seller who treats packs as versioned products can ship an update in days, update the listing photos and email every past buyer. A seller who treats them as finished files does nothing, and their listing slowly collects reviews saying the templates do not fit.
- Designs once, lists, moves on
- Old sizes stay in the listing for years
- No contact with past buyers
- Competes on price when it ages
- Tracks platform changes monthly
- Ships version updates with new formats
- Emails buyers when packs change
- Competes on being current
| When | What you check | What you ship |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | Check platform help pages and announcements for size or feature changes | Note which packs are affected |
| Quarterly | Refresh fonts, colours and seasonal frames; add one new format | Release a version update, email past buyers |
| On a platform change | Rebuild affected sizes within weeks, not months | Update listing images and the first line of the description |
| Yearly | Retire packs that no longer sell; merge into bundles | Fewer, current listings beat many stale ones |
How to sell IG templates that buyers keep using
The best packs are built around how the buyer posts, not around how many designs fit in a listing. Plan a month of content for one kind of account, then design the frames that month needs:
- Feed posts for announcements, tips, quotes and testimonials.
- Carousel sets with a cover slide, content slides and a closing slide that asks for the save or the click.
- Story frames for questions, polls, behind the scenes and links.
- Reel covers designed for the taller grid crop.
- Pinterest pins at 2:3 if the buyer also drives traffic from Pinterest.
Niche beats volume. "Instagram templates for lash artists" tells the buyer the copy prompts, photos and calls to action will fit them. Our list of trending digital products on Pinterest is a good source of niches already searching for this kind of help.
- Every design is original; no standalone Canva elements
- Delivery matches licence: Canva link if any Pro content is used
- Sizes match current Instagram and Pinterest help pages
- Text sits inside safe areas for crops and overlays
- Placeholder photos are yours or licensed for redistribution
- Guide covers editing, fonts, brand colours and scheduling
- Version number and update date in the guide and listing
Where to sell and what it costs
Etsy brings buyers who search by niche and style. Its fees policy lists $0.20 per listing for four months and a 6.5% transaction fee, with payment processing on top that varies by country, and its digital listings rules allow five files of up to 20MB each and require that digital items are made or designed by you (checked October 2026). Run your price through the free Etsy profit margin calculator to see what you keep per sale.
Your own store on Gumroad or Payhip makes the update model easier, because you hold the buyer's email and can send new versions. Many sellers list single packs on Etsy for discovery and sell the full, always-updated bundle from their own store. Mockups do a lot of the selling either way; our guide to creating mockups in Canva for Etsy covers phone-screen previews that show templates in context.

What the buyer guide should cover
A social template buyer is usually a small business owner, not a designer. The guide is part of the product, and a clear one cuts refund requests and support email. Keep it short, visual and in the order the buyer works:
- Opening the template. How to click the Canva link, make a copy and find it again later in their own account.
- Brand setup. Where to change colours and fonts once so every frame updates, and which fonts the pack uses.
- Swapping photos. How to drop their own images into frames without breaking the layout.
- Exporting. Which download format to pick for feed posts, Stories and pins, and how to keep the sizes intact.
- Posting rhythm. A suggested order for the month, so the pack reads as a plan rather than a pile of designs.
- Updates. The version number, the date, and how buyers will hear about new versions.
The updates line matters most for the maintenance model. If buyers know new sizes and formats arrive on a schedule, they keep your email, open it when it lands and are more likely to buy the next pack. That relationship is the asset; the files are what you trade for it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Selling Pro content as files. It breaks Canva's licence and can get listings removed.
- Copying a popular account's look. Similar is fine; recognisable copies invite takedowns.
- Stale listing photos. If you update the pack, update the previews, or buyers assume nothing changed.
- Promising growth. Templates save time; they do not decide reach. Say what the pack does, not what the algorithm will do.
Selling social media templates: FAQ
Can I sell Canva social media templates?
Yes, if the design is original. Canva's help center lists templates, including templates for social networking sites, as products you can sell. If a template uses Canva Pro content, you can only sell it as a Canva template link, not as a PDF, PNG or other file. Templates built only from free content and your own uploads can be sold as files or links. You cannot sell Canva elements on their own. Checked October 2026.
What size should Instagram templates be in 2026?
Instagram's help center says photos keep full quality at a width of 1080 pixels with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4, so 1080 by 1440 is the tallest feed size, and 1080 by 1080 and 1080 by 1350 remain inside the range. Profiles now show a taller grid, so design covers with the key content in the centre. For Reels and Stories, design at 9:16. Checked October 2026.
What size are Pinterest pin templates?
Pinterest recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio, or 1000 by 1500 pixels, for standard image pins, and warns that taller pins can be cut off in feeds. For full-screen video pins it recommends 9:16. A Pinterest pack should therefore ship 1000 by 1500 designs, with any text kept away from the very bottom where overlays sit. Checked October 2026 against Pinterest's spec pages.
Where should I sell Instagram template packs?
Etsy brings search traffic from buyers who look for packs by niche and style, at the cost of listing, transaction and processing fees. Your own storefront on Gumroad or Payhip suits sellers with an audience, and lets you email past buyers when you release updates. Many sellers use both: Etsy for discovery and their own store for bundles, updates and repeat buyers.
How many templates should be in a social media pack?
There is no fixed number that sells best, and no reliable public data on it. Build the pack around a real posting schedule: enough feed posts, carousel slides, Story frames and Reel covers for a buyer to post consistently in one style for several weeks. A smaller, coherent pack for one niche usually reads better than a huge generic one, and leaves room for paid add-on packs later.
How often should I update social media templates?
Check your packs whenever a platform changes its sizes or adds a new format, and on a fixed schedule, such as quarterly, even if nothing has announced. Instagram moved profiles to a taller grid in early 2025 and changed hashtag limits in late 2025, and both changed what buyers needed. Updating sizes, adding new formats and emailing past buyers turns a static product into a reason to come back.
