Instagram's size rules

Width. Instagram's Help Center says photos are shared at widths between 320 and 1080 pixels. A wider photo is sized down to 1080 and a narrower one is enlarged, so every download here is exactly 1080 wide.

Shape. The same page gives a supported aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which at 1080 wide is 1080×566 up to 1080×1440. A photo outside that range is cropped to fit when you post it.

The grid. In January 2025 Instagram switched the profile grid from square tiles to 3:4 portrait tiles. A 3:4 post shows in full on your profile; other shapes are trimmed to fit the tile.

How the crop is worked out

If the image is wider than the target shape:
crop height = image height, crop width = height × ratio
Otherwise:
crop width = image width, crop height = width ÷ ratio
Centre the crop on the focus point, then slide it back inside the image at the edges.
Export = crop scaled to 1080 wide.

Example: a 4000×3000 photo cropped to 4:5 with the focus in the middle keeps a 2400×3000 area starting 800 pixels from the left, exported at 1080×1350.

Building a swipeable panorama instead? The carousel splitter cuts one wide image into seamless slides.

FAQ

What size should an Instagram post be?

Export at 1080 pixels wide. Instagram accepts widths from 320 to 1080 pixels and shrinks anything wider to 1080. For height, 1350 gives a 4:5 portrait, 1440 gives 3:4 (the tallest Instagram allows), 1080 gives a square and 566 gives the widest 1.91:1 landscape.

Why does my profile grid cut off the top and bottom of my posts?

Since January 2025 the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles instead of squares. A 3:4 post shows in full on the grid; a 4:5 post loses a thin strip at the sides, and a square or landscape post loses more. Keep faces and text near the middle if you post other shapes.

What happens if my photo is taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1?

Instagram crops it to fit inside that range when you post. Cropping it yourself first lets you choose what stays in frame instead of leaving it to the app.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read and cropped by your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to IImagined or any other server, and closing the tab discards it.

Why does the download look softer than my original?

If the cropped area is narrower than 1080 pixels, the tool has to enlarge it to reach 1080 wide, which softens detail. Start from a larger original, or use a smaller crop of a high-resolution photo, to avoid that.
