How this generator works, and why five
Five is Instagram's cap. Its Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and a post with more will not go through. The limit began rolling out on December 18, 2025.
Specific beats generic. Instagram said that "using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content's performance and people's experience" (Social Media Today, December 18, 2025), and warned that tags like #reels or #explore "don't actually help your content appear in places like Explore and could, in fact, hurt your content's performance" (BetaNews, December 19, 2025). That is why the suggestions are grouped by purpose and the tool flags generic tags you type in.
Hashtags label posts; they don't add reach. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has said hashtags help with search but "don't increase your reach" (The Verge), and people can no longer follow a hashtag. Instagram's search explainer matches searches against names, bios, captions, hashtags and places, so clear caption words matter at least as much.
What this tool does not know. Each niche has a fixed list we wrote, sorted into the slots above. There is no account connection and no live data on tag volume, trends or whether a tag is currently searchable. Search every tag before you use it and drop any that show unrelated posts or no results.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

Why does this generator give at most 5 hashtags?
Because 5 is Instagram's limit, and Instagram says a few targeted tags work better than many generic ones. Five is a ceiling, not a target: untick any suggestion that does not describe your post.
Should I use #reels, #explore or #fyp?
No. Instagram has said tags like #reels or #explore don't help content appear in places like Explore and could hurt performance. Use tags that describe what the post is about.
Do hashtags increase reach on Instagram?
Instagram says no. Adam Mosseri has said hashtags help with search but don't increase reach, and people can no longer follow hashtags. Reach depends on how viewers respond to the post itself.
Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
In the caption. Instagram's guidance on search says to put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments, if you want a post to be found.
Does this tool check hashtag volume or banned tags?
No. Suggestions come from a fixed list we wrote for each niche. Search each tag in Instagram first; if it shows unrelated posts or no results, leave it out.
