Where the follower count comes from

The number is read from the account's public profile, the page anyone can open, when you select Look up, and the result shows that time. A lookup is kept for up to 12 hours, so checking the same account again within that time shows the same reading and its original time.

Why it can differ from the app: Instagram shortens large counts on the profile (12.5K, 1.2M), and the count keeps moving after it is read. This shows the full number from the moment shown.

What it cannot see: A private account shows its follower, following and post counts, because Instagram makes those public, but its posts are visible only to its followers, so there are no averages. An account that hides its like counts shows comments but no likes or engagement rate.

The averages cover its 12 most recent posts, leaving out pinned ones, which sit first whatever their age. Engagement rate is (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100 for each post, averaged. Saves and shares are only in the owner's Insights, so public data cannot include them. For each post's rate, a chart, and the best and weakest, use the Instagram engagement rate calculator.

Questions

How do I check someone's Instagram follower count?

Enter their username, like @name, or paste their profile link, then select Look up. The tool reads the public profile and shows the exact follower count, how many accounts they follow and their number of posts, with the time it was read.

Why is this different from the number in the Instagram app?

The app shortens large counts, for example to 12.5K or 1.2M, and the count changes as people follow and unfollow. This tool shows the full number at the time shown on the result, which can be up to 12 hours old if someone looked up the same account recently.

Can I see how many followers a private account has?

Yes. A private account's follower, following and post counts are public on Instagram, so the lookup shows them. Its posts are visible only to its followers, so there are no likes, comments or engagement averages.

Will the account know I checked?

No. You do not sign in, nothing is sent to the account, and Instagram does not show accounts who viewed their profile.

How often is the count updated?

Each lookup reads the profile again, unless the same account was looked up in the last 12 hours: then you see that reading, with the time it was taken. There is no live counter.

What engagement rate does it show?

Likes plus comments, divided by followers and multiplied by 100, for each of the last 12 posts, then averaged, with pinned posts left out. Public data has no saves or shares, so the same rate from your own Insights can be higher. The engagement rate calculator shows every post's rate.
