Where the words come from, and what it cannot read
Speech recognition on the reel's audio. The tool sends the link to a data provider, which returns the reel's captions when it has them and otherwise runs speech recognition on the audio, for reels up to about two minutes. The accuracy matches that: clear speech comes out well, while names, slang and words over loud music can be misheard. It also writes down sung lyrics, so a reel with a song under it may come back as the song.
What you get. The words as paragraphs, the opening line called out as the hook, the word count, the reel's length and the pace, which is the words divided by the whole length, pauses included. The provider gives Instagram words without timings, so there are no timestamps and no .srt file for reels.
What it cannot read. Stories, photo-only posts, private accounts, deleted posts, music with no words, and some reels over two minutes. Only the link is sent: you need no Instagram account and nothing is posted.
Someone else's reel. A transcript of another creator's reel is for reference: reading it, studying how it is built, or quoting a line with credit. Their words are still theirs, so do not repost them as your own. Each reel's transcript is kept for a year so it loads at once next time. Your IP address is not stored: a daily counter keeps only a scrambled form of it to hold the 20-a-day limit.

Questions
How do I get the transcript of an Instagram reel?
In the Instagram app, tap the paper plane under the reel, then Copy link (on the website, the three dots, then Copy link). Paste the link here and press Get transcript. The spoken words appear as paragraphs you can copy or save as a .txt file.
Does Instagram show a transcript of a reel?
Instagram can show automatic captions on some reels while they play, but it has no way to copy them as text or download them. This tool hands you the words as text.
Why is there no timestamped version for reels?
For Instagram, the data provider returns the words without timings, so there is no honest way to show when each line is said or build an .srt subtitle file. Paste a TikTok link and you get both.
Why did my reel come back as song lyrics, or with no words?
Speech recognition writes down what it hears, and that includes the words of a song playing under the video. A reel with only music and no words, only on-screen text, or a length over about two minutes can come back with nothing.
Can it read stories, photo posts or private accounts?
No. It reads public reels and public video posts, including the videos in a carousel, whose words are joined in order. Stories, photo-only posts, private accounts and deleted posts cannot be read.
Can I reuse the words from someone else's reel?
Use them for reference, to study how the hook and structure work, or to quote a line with credit to the creator. The words belong to whoever made the reel, so do not repost their script as your own. With your own reels, turn the words into a caption, a blog post or a script for your next video.
