Every style swaps your letters for symbols, so all of them are hard for screen readers. Tap a style to see it on the profile.

Styled letters are two code units each, 23 counted that way. If Instagram stops you early, style fewer words.

Screen readers may spell cursive out or skip it. Keep your name and key words in plain letters.

How the styles work, and when not to use them

They are characters, not fonts. A bio or name on Instagram has no font setting, so every generator does the same thing: it replaces each letter with a look-alike character. Bold, italic, cursive, gothic, outline, sans and typewriter come from Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, made for maths notation; bubbles, squares and wide letters come from other blocks; small caps and upside down borrow phonetic and other letters that only look right. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

The costs. Screen readers may read a styled letter by its symbol name or skip it, so someone listening may not hear your name. Search can miss it too: Instagram matches searches against names and bios, and styled characters are not the ones people type. And a phone without a font for a character shows a box instead. So keep the username plain, keep your name and niche words in plain letters, and use a style for one accent word or a heading line.

The limits, checked October 2026. Instagram's Help Center says you can write a bio of up to 150 characters. Usernames take only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters (Instagram Help Center on adding periods, numbers and underscores; the full rule as listed by Hootsuite, October 6, 2026). Instagram's own typeface, Instagram Sans, was announced in its visual refresh of May 23, 2022. On TikTok, usernames take letters, numbers, underscores and periods.

Questions

How do I change the font on Instagram?

Instagram's name and bio fields have no font setting, so you change the look by pasting different characters. Type your text above, tap a style to see it on the profile preview, copy it, then paste it into Edit profile in the Instagram app. Stories and Reels are different: their text tool has its own font picker.

Are these real fonts?

No. Each style swaps every letter for a different Unicode character, mostly from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which was made for maths, not decoration. That is why the text pastes into Instagram, TikTok and most apps without installing anything, and also why it can cause problems for screen readers, search and older devices.

What font does Instagram use?

Instagram introduced its own typeface, Instagram Sans, in its visual refresh announced on May 23, 2022, and offers it in places like Stories and Reels. No generator can put Instagram Sans or any other font into a bio, because a bio has no font setting; this tool gives you look-alike characters instead.

Can I use a fancy font in my Instagram username?

No. Usernames can only use letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters, so styled characters are refused. Use styles in the name line and bio, and keep the username plain. Our Instagram username generator checks handles against those rules.

Do fancy fonts work with screen readers?

Often not. A screen reader may read each styled letter by its symbol name, spell the word out letter by letter, or skip it, so someone listening may not hear your name at all. Every style here is marked, and small caps and upside down text are marked as not readable aloud. Keep your name and the key facts in plain letters and use a style for one accent word.

Why do some letters show as boxes or question marks?

The phone or computer is missing a font that has that character. Newer phones cover all of these styles; older devices, some Android skins and some desktop apps do not. If your audience may be on older phones, stick to bold or italic, which are the most widely supported.

Does styled text count against the 150-character bio limit?

Each styled letter is one character to a person, but it is stored as two code units, and some apps count those instead. The counter shows both. If Instagram stops you before 150 characters with a long styled bio, that is the reason, so style fewer words.

Will a fancy name hurt my Instagram search?

It can. Instagram search matches what people type against names and bios, and styled letters are different characters from the plain ones people type. Keep the words you want to be found for, such as your niche and city, in plain letters.

Does this work as a TikTok font generator?

Yes. The same characters paste into a TikTok bio, display name and captions, with the same limits: they are not fonts, screen readers struggle with them, and TikTok usernames, like Instagram ones, take only letters, numbers, underscores and periods.
