The Instagram bio character limit is 150 characters, counting spaces, line breaks and emoji. Budget those characters across five jobs: who you help, the result, proof, a niche detail and a call to action. Move everything else out: your keyword into the name field, links into the links section and details into highlights.
The Instagram bio character limit is 150 characters, according to Instagram's help center, and every character counts: spaces, punctuation, line breaks and emoji. Your profile name, username and links live in separate fields, so a good bio uses those for keywords and links and saves the 150 characters for what only the bio can do.
Checked October 2026 against Instagram's help page on adding a bio ("You can write a bio of up to 150 characters") and on changing your profile name.
150 characters is roughly two short sentences. That is enough if you treat the bio as a budget rather than a blank space. For how the bio fits the rest of your profile and content plan, see our Instagram content strategy guide.
Instagram bio character limit: what counts and what does not
- Every letter, number and space
- Line breaks between lines
- Punctuation and symbols
- Emoji (some use more than one character)
- Hashtags and @mentions typed in the bio
- Profile name (the bold display name)
- Username (your @handle)
- Links added in the links section
- Category label on professional accounts
- Story highlights
The column on the right is where most of the extra room comes from. People often cram a keyword, a link and a list of services into the bio when other fields would carry them better.
How many characters should an Instagram bio use?
Using all 150 is not the goal. A bio people can read in three seconds usually beats a full one. Here is a budget across the five jobs a bio does, with an example for a fictional meal-prep coach:
| Job | Characters (approx.) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Who you help | About 30 | "Helping busy parents" |
| Result or offer | About 35 | "cook healthy dinners in 20 minutes" |
| Proof or credential | About 30 | "Former restaurant chef" |
| Personality or niche detail | About 20 | "Batch-cook Sundays" |
| Call to action | About 30 | "Free meal plan below" |
- 1Put your keyword in the name field
For example "Meal Prep Coach | Easy Dinners". The name field is searched; the bio is read.
- 2Write who you help and the result
One line, plain words: "Helping busy parents cook healthy dinners in 20 minutes".
- 3Add one line of proof
A credential, number you can stand behind, or notable work.
- 4End with one call to action
Point to the single link that matters: "Free meal plan below".
- 5Count and trim
Remove decorative spaces and extra emoji before cutting meaning.
What a visitor reads in those 150 characters
- 01Name field
What is this account?
- 02Bio, first line
Is it for me?
- 03Bio, last line
What do I do next?
- 04Link and highlights
Proof, prices, booking
Most people who land on a profile decide within a few seconds whether to follow, tap the link or leave. They read in roughly this order, which is why the first line of the bio should say who the account is for, and the last line should give one next step. Anything in between is supporting detail. If you have more to say, it belongs in a pinned post or a highlight, where people who are already interested will look for it.
Line breaks help readability but cost characters. Two or three short lines usually read better than one long sentence, and still leave room for a call to action. Review your bio every few months, or whenever your offer changes, because an out-of-date bio quietly sends visitors to the wrong place.
The name field carries the rest
Your profile name is the bold text above the bio, separate from your @username. It is a natural place for the words people search for, such as your niche and city: "Wedding Photographer | Leeds" does more work there than in the bio. Instagram's help center says you can change your profile name twice every 14 days, so settle on it rather than testing daily. Our niche guides, such as wedding photographer Instagram, show how different businesses use the name and bio together.

Instagram bio character limit: FAQ
What is the Instagram bio character limit?
Instagram's help center says you can write a bio of up to 150 characters on your profile. That limit covers everything in the bio field, including spaces, punctuation, line breaks and emoji. Links you add through the links section and your profile name sit in separate fields, so they do not use bio characters. Checked October 2026.
Do spaces and line breaks count toward the Instagram bio limit?
Yes. Every character you type in the bio field counts, including spaces and line breaks. That is why a bio laid out as four short lines can hit the limit faster than it looks. If you are short of room, remove decorative spacing first, then trim words, before you cut anything that tells visitors what you do.
Do emojis count as more than one character in an Instagram bio?
Some can. Many emoji are stored as more than one character behind the scenes, especially ones with skin tones, flags or combined symbols, so they can use more of the 150-character budget than the single symbol you see. If you are close to the limit, swap a complex emoji for a simpler one or a word.
How do I fit more into an Instagram bio?
Move information out of the bio. Put your main keyword in the profile name field, which Instagram search uses, put links in the links section, and use Story highlights for prices, FAQs and reviews. That leaves the 150 characters for what only the bio does well: who you help, the result, proof and one clear next step.
Is the name field the same as the username on Instagram?
No. The username is your handle after the @, and the name field is the display name shown in bold on your profile. You can put a short description such as "Wedding Photographer | Leeds" in the name field. Instagram's help center says you can change your profile name twice every 14 days, so plan changes rather than experimenting daily.
