Quick answer

To unlink Facebook from Instagram, open Accounts Center from the Instagram menu, go to Accounts and tap Remove next to the Facebook account. That ends shared login, cross-posting and profile sync between them without deleting either account. A professional account's link to a Facebook Page is a separate setting on the Page, and removing a subscribed account can cancel a bundled Meta Verified subscription.

To unlink Facebook from Instagram, open Instagram, go to Profile, Menu, Accounts Center, then Accounts, and tap Remove next to your Facebook account. Meta's Help Center says the profiles tied to a removed account are removed with it, so shared login, automatic cross-posting and profile sync stop between them, and neither account is deleted.

Checked October 2026 against Meta's Help Center on managing which accounts are in your Accounts Center and connected experiences, Facebook's Help Center on connecting or disconnecting a Page and an Instagram account and what that connection does, and the Meta Verified terms. Some accounts see Meta Account settings in place of Accounts Center while Meta moves people over; the steps are the same.

There are really three different things people mean by "disable Facebook from Instagram": stop cross-posting, separate the accounts completely, or split a business account from its Facebook Page. Each has its own switch, and picking the smallest one that solves your problem saves you a password reset and, on a business account, a broken ad setup. For other account problems, start at the Instagram account help hub.

That guide is Instagram account suspended because of Facebook. Everyone else can carry on.

How to disable Facebook from Instagram: pick the right switch

Start with what is actually annoying you. Most people only want their Instagram posts to stop appearing on Facebook, and that does not need a full unlink.

Which setting to change
Separate everything
Connected experiences, Sharing across profiles: turn Automatically share off. Accounts stay linked.
Same sharing toggle. Leave the Page link alone so ads and the shared inbox keep working.
Only stop cross-posting
Accounts Center, Accounts, Remove the Facebook account. Set an Instagram password first.
Remove from Accounts Center, then disconnect Instagram in the Page's Linked accounts settings.
Personal or creator account
Business account with a Page

This is the full separation. Before you start, make sure you can log in to Instagram on its own: Meta says an Instagram account created with Facebook will prompt you to create a password once it leaves the shared Accounts Center.

Remove Facebook from Instagram's Accounts Center
  1. 1
    Set an Instagram password

If you only ever used Continue with Facebook, create a password and confirm the email and phone on the account first.

  2. 2
    Open Accounts Center

Instagram: Profile, Menu (three lines), Accounts Center.

  3. 3
    Tap Accounts

Some versions call it Manage accounts. Expected: a list of your Facebook and Instagram profiles.

  4. 4
Tap Remove next to the Facebook account

Read the screen: Meta lists what will stop working between the accounts.

  5. 5
    Confirm the removal

Expected result: the Facebook account no longer appears in Instagram's Accounts Center.

  6. 6
Check the Page link if you run a business account

That is a separate setting. See the business section below.

The same steps work from the Facebook side (Settings and privacy, Settings, Accounts Center) and on a computer. Meta's article describes it as moving an account out of an Accounts Center, with the same Accounts or Manage accounts screen on phone, tablet and computer.

What stops syncing when you unlink

Removing the account ends every connected experience between the two, because Meta only runs those features between accounts in the same Accounts Center. Here is what that means in practice.

FeatureAfter you unlinkWatch out for
Logging in with accountsStops. Meta says moving an account out is how you turn login access off for itSet an Instagram password first if you only used Facebook to log in
Automatic sharing of posts and storiesStops. Sharing across profiles only works inside one Accounts CenterOld cross-posts stay on Facebook until you delete them there
Profile picture and name syncStops. Meta says the picture no longer syncs after removalBoth profiles keep the picture they had; change each separately
Links shown on your profilesStops, since the link setting lives in Connected experiencesAdd a link in your bio by hand if you still want it
Bundled Meta VerifiedCancelled immediately, per Meta Verified termsCheck before you remove a subscribed account
Facebook Page connection (professional accounts)A separate setting on the Page, under Linked accountsCheck it after you unlink; disconnect there if you want ads and inbox split too

Two notes on logins. First, Meta announced that from early 2026 the separate "Logging in with accounts" switch goes away and all accounts in one Accounts Center can log into each other by default; moving an account out is now the way to turn that off. Second, if you also use two-factor authentication, check it is still set on the Instagram account itself after the split, so a stolen Facebook password and a stolen Instagram password are two separate problems.

Stop cross-posting without unlinking

If cross-posting is the only issue, switch it off and keep everything else. The setting is called Sharing across profiles.

  1. Open Accounts Center and tap Connected experiences.
  2. Tap Sharing across profiles.
  3. Pick the profile you share from (your Instagram account), then the profile you share to (Facebook).
  4. Under Automatically share, turn posts, stories or both off.

Meta adds two details worth knowing. Posts and stories from a Facebook business Page cannot be auto-shared to Instagram, only those from your personal profile. And if you have more than one Facebook profile, you choose which one each Instagram account shares to, and it keeps sharing there until you change it.

Business accounts: the Facebook Page connection

A professional Instagram account can be connected to a Facebook Page, and that link is managed from the Page, not from Accounts Center. Facebook's Help Center lists what it powers, which is why you should think before you cut it.

What the Page connection does
While connected
  • Instagram comments and DMs can be answered from the Page inbox
  • Page admins can create Instagram ads from Facebook
  • People with advertising permissions can promote posts with Instagram Promote
  • Instagram posts can be shared to the Page
  • The connection may be visible to others
After you disconnect
  • Instagram DMs are handled in Instagram only
  • Ads that use the Instagram account need it connected again
  • No sharing between the account and the Page
  • A subscribed Meta Verified Page and account may lose the subscription
  • Both the Page and the account keep their content

To disconnect the Page from Instagram, Facebook's steps (checked October 2026):

Disconnect a Facebook Page and Instagram account
  1. 1
    Switch into the Page

On Facebook, your profile photo, See all profiles, then the Page.

  2. 2
    Open Settings

The Page's profile picture, Settings and privacy, then Settings.

  3. 3
    Linked accounts

Under Permissions, click Linked accounts, then Instagram.

  4. 4
    Disconnect account

Click Disconnect account, then Yes, disconnect. You need Facebook access or task access to the Page.

If you run ads, disconnect only after your campaigns that place on Instagram are paused or moved. On a smaller account the cleaner choice is often to keep the Page link for ads and messages and only stop cross-posting, so your Instagram feed is written for Instagram.

Meta Verified: check before you unlink

This is the costly surprise. Meta Verified's terms say that if you hold a bundled subscription and remove a subscribed account from your Accounts Center, the subscription is cancelled immediately. Facebook's Page help adds that disconnecting a subscribed Page and Instagram account may cancel an active Meta Verified subscription (both checked October 2026).

If you pay for verification, open its settings first and see which profiles it covers. To keep the badge on one profile only, change the subscribed profiles rather than pulling the account out. Our comparison of Meta One and Meta Verified explains what each subscription covers, and how to get verified on Instagram covers eligibility.

The reverse is quick, and nothing you removed is lost: you re-add the account and switch features back on.

Relinking, in order
  • Accounts Center, Accounts (or Manage accounts), Add accounts, then log in to Facebook
  • Only one Facebook account fits per Accounts Center: remove a different one first if it is there
  • Connected experiences: turn Sharing across profiles back on only if you want cross-posting
  • Choose whether to sync your profile picture and name
  • For a business account, reconnect Instagram in the Page's Linked accounts settings
  • If you use Meta Verified, check which profiles the subscription now covers

Separate accounts make sense for plenty of creators: a private Facebook for family and a public Instagram for work rarely need the same audience. What matters more is that the Instagram account can stand on its own. If you are rebuilding it as a standalone channel, our Instagram Ignited program covers niche and profile setup, Reels and reading Insights from the Instagram side only.

Troubleshooting

  • No Remove option next to Facebook. You may be looking at the Accounts Center of a different Instagram account. Switch to the account you want to separate, then open Accounts Center again.
  • Asked for a password you never set. That is the prompt Meta describes for accounts created with Facebook. Create the password, then finish the removal.
  • Instagram posts still appear on Facebook. Older cross-posts stay where they were published. Delete them on Facebook if you want them gone; new posts stop sharing once the accounts are apart or the toggle is off.
  • Ads stopped delivering on Instagram. The Page connection was probably cut. Reconnect it in the Page's Linked accounts settings, or move the campaign to Facebook placements only.
  • The badge disappeared. A bundled Meta Verified subscription ends when a subscribed account leaves Accounts Center. Subscribe again from the profile you want covered.

Unlinking Facebook from Instagram: FAQ

How do I unlink Facebook from Instagram?

In Instagram, go to Profile, Menu, Accounts Center, then Accounts. Tap Remove next to the Facebook account and confirm. Meta's Help Center says that when you remove an account from an Accounts Center, the profiles tied to it are removed too, so connected features such as shared login and cross-posting stop between them. Neither account is deleted. Checked October 2026.

Can I stop Instagram posting to Facebook without unlinking?

Yes. In Accounts Center, open Connected experiences, then Sharing across profiles, pick the Instagram account and the Facebook profile, and turn Automatically share off for posts, stories or both. The accounts stay in the same Accounts Center, so login and other connected features keep working. This is the right move if cross-posting is the only thing that bothers you.

Does unlinking Facebook delete my Instagram account?

No. Removing an account from Accounts Center separates the two accounts; it does not deactivate or delete either one. Your posts, followers and messages on Instagram stay as they are. Deleting an Instagram account is a separate process in Accounts Center with its own waiting period, and has nothing to do with the Facebook connection.

Will I lose access to Instagram if I unlink Facebook?

Possibly, if you only ever logged in with Facebook. Meta says that if you created an Instagram account with a Facebook account and then remove it from the same Accounts Center, you will be prompted to create a password for Instagram. Set a password and check the email and phone on the Instagram account before you remove anything.

Does removing Facebook from Accounts Center disconnect my Facebook Page?

Treat them as two separate settings. The link between a professional Instagram account and a Facebook Page is managed from the Page: Settings, Linked accounts, Instagram, Disconnect account. That link powers the shared inbox and Instagram ads created from Facebook. After unlinking in Accounts Center, open the Page's Linked accounts and check which state you want.

What happens to Meta Verified if I unlink Facebook and Instagram?

It can be cancelled. Meta Verified's terms say that if you have a bundled subscription and remove a subscribed account from your Accounts Center, the subscription is cancelled immediately. Meta's Page help also warns that disconnecting a subscribed Page and Instagram account may cancel an active Meta Verified subscription. Check your subscription before you unlink. Checked October 2026.

How do I link Facebook and Instagram again?

In Accounts Center, open Accounts or Manage accounts, tap Add accounts and log in to the Facebook account. Meta allows only one Facebook account per Accounts Center, so remove a different Facebook account first if one is there. Then turn back on whatever you want in Connected experiences, such as sharing across profiles. A Page link is re-added from the Page's Linked accounts.
