Instagram stops working for one of two reasons: it is down for many people, or something on your side broke. Open instagram.com in a browser to tell which. If only the app fails, update it, restart the phone, switch networks, clear the cache (Android) and reinstall, in that order. Feature problems with stories, DMs, music or likes usually have their own cause, covered below.
Instagram is not working either because Instagram itself is having an outage or because something on your side is broken: an outdated app, a bad connection, a corrupted cache or a limit on your account. Open instagram.com in a browser to tell which, then work through the fixes below in order, stopping at the first one that works.
Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages Something's not working with the Instagram app, Troubleshooting, Report a technical problem and message limits, Instagram's outages and Account Status announcement, Meta Status, and Google's and Apple's storage help pages.
Is Instagram down, or is it just you?
Answer this first, because every fix below is wasted effort during a real outage. The quickest test takes thirty seconds: load instagram.com in a phone or computer browser, on a different network from the one your app is on. Instagram's own help page points to the web version as the fallback when the app misbehaves.
- 01Open instagram.com in a browser
Use a different network from your app if you can, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
- 02Web fails too?
Look for reports from other people. If many are reporting it, it is an outage: wait.
- 03Web works, app fails?
The problem is your app or phone. Run the fix ladder below.
- 04Only one feature fails?
Stories, DMs, music or likes. Jump to that feature's section.
Where to look for an outage matters, because there is less official information than people expect:
- Meta Status is not for the app. metastatus.com is titled "Status and outages of Meta business products" and covers tools such as Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite, Shops and the developer platform. A green board there says nothing about your feed, stories or DMs.
- In-app notices are occasional. In 2021 Instagram said it was testing a notice in the Activity feed during outages, and that it would not send one every time.
- Crowd reports are the practical signal. Outage-tracking sites chart user reports, and a sudden spike, plus people posting about it on other networks, is usually the fastest confirmation. These are reports, not official status.
If the app works but your account seems limited, such as reach collapsing or actions failing, that is a different problem. The Instagram account help hub covers restrictions, blocks and disabled accounts in one place.
How to fix Instagram not working, in order
Run these cheapest first. Each step clears a different cause, and the order is designed so you never reinstall an app that only needed an update.
- 11. Update Instagram
Instagram's Help Center recommends this first and says some older versions of the app are no longer supported.
- 22. Update your phone's software
Instagram's troubleshooting page asks for the latest app and the latest operating system together.
- 33. Force-close and restart the phone
Close Instagram fully, restart the device, then reopen the app.
- 44. Switch networks
Try Wi-Fi, then mobile data. Instagram suggests both to rule out a weak connection. Turn off any VPN while testing.
- 55. Clear the cache (Android)
Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage and cache, Clear cache. Not Clear storage, which logs you out.
- 66. Delete and reinstall the app
Instagram says your photos and profile info are saved, so your account is safe. Know your login first.
- 77. Log out and back in
Refreshes the session if one account misbehaves and another on the same phone does not.
- 88. Report the problem
Profile, menu, Help, Report a problem, with logs attached.
Two notes on steps 5 and 6. Google's Android help says menu names vary by phone maker, so look for "Storage" inside the Instagram app entry if yours differs. iPhone has no clear-cache button for individual apps: the closest equivalent is reinstalling, or offloading the app from iPhone Storage, which Apple says removes the app but keeps its documents and data.
Match the symptom to the cause
If you can describe exactly what fails, you can usually skip most of the ladder. Find your row.
| What you see | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing loads, on app and web | Instagram outage, or your network | Try another network; if it still fails, wait |
| App fails, instagram.com works | Old app version or corrupted cache | Update, then clear cache or reinstall |
| App closes on opening | Outdated app or phone software | Update both, restart, then reinstall |
| Feed stuck on old posts | Connection or cache | Switch Wi-Fi and mobile data, then clear cache |
| Story will not post | File, connection or storage | Post a fresh photo to test, free up space |
| DMs will not send | Message limit or connection | Read any warning; wait out a limit |
| Song or music sticker missing | Licensing in your region or account type | See the audio guide below |
| Can post, but likes or follows fail | Action block on your account | Check Account Status, then wait |
| Cannot log in | Password, two-factor or a hack | Use the login help flow, not a reinstall |
Instagram stories not working
Split it into two problems: stories that will not load, and stories that will not post. Stories that show a spinning ring or a blank screen are almost always connection or cache, so run steps 3 to 5 of the ladder.
A story that will not post is more often about the file or the phone. Test with a plain photo taken in the camera right now. If that posts, the original file is the problem: re-export a video in a common format or trim a long clip. If nothing posts, check free storage on the phone, since the app needs room to process media. Stories that posted but get fewer views than usual are a reach question, not a fault; what you can still see after 48 hours explains where the viewer list goes.
Instagram DMs not working
First read the screen. If Instagram showed a warning about sending too many messages, its Help Center says you may not be able to send more direct messages for a period of time. That limit is there to stop spam, and no reinstall clears it. Our guide to the Instagram DM ban covers how long it tends to last and what triggers it.
- A warning about message volume? Stop sending and wait it out
- Messages show a red failure mark? Update the app and switch networks
- Message to someone who does not follow you? It sits in their requests until they accept
- Forwarding to many chats? Instagram allows up to 5 chats at a time
- No Seen or no reply in one chat only? The other person may have restricted or blocked you
That last row trips people up. When someone restricts you, your messages move to their requests and you stop seeing read receipts; what restrict means on Instagram explains what changes on each side.
Instagram feed not loading
A feed that will not refresh, or shows the same posts for hours, is a connection or cache problem in most cases. Switch networks, turn off a VPN or data saver, and clear the cache on Android. If the feed loads but shows content you are not interested in, that is the ranking system, not a fault, and it is adjustable from your own interactions over time.
Reels and music not working
Reels problems are usually specific enough to have their own fix, and our deeper guides cover each:
- Song unavailable or the music sticker is missing: licensing that varies by region and account type. See Instagram audio not available.
- A reel posted but is not on your grid: see why a reel is not showing on your profile.
- The trial reels option is missing: eligibility, covered in trial reels not showing.
- Reels look soft after upload: upload settings, covered in why your reels are blurry.
If the app works perfectly and your reels simply stopped reaching people, nothing is technically broken. That is a distribution question, and it is what our Instagram Ignited program works on, from hooks and scripting to reading your metrics.
Likes, follows or comments fail
If the app loads but a specific action fails with a message such as "Try again later", that is an action block on your account, not an app fault. Instagram's 2023 update to Account Status added visibility into when some features on your account are restricted. Open Settings, then Account Status, and read every type of action block and how to clear it.
Login not working
Do not reinstall for a login problem; it can make things worse. Use Instagram's login help flow to reset the password or get a login link. If the email or phone on the account has changed without you, treat it as a hack and follow how to recover a hacked Instagram account.
When nothing works: report it
If the ladder fails and Instagram is not down, report the bug from inside the app. Instagram's help page describes the route: your profile, the menu, Help under More info and support, then Report a problem. You can also shake the phone on the screen where the problem happens.
- Your phone model and its software version
- What you were doing when it failed
- A screenshot or screen recording of the error
- Include complete logs and diagnostics when asked
- Which fixes you already tried
The help page does not promise a reply, so send it and keep using the web version in the meantime.
Instagram not working: FAQ
Why is my Instagram not working today?
Either Instagram has a problem for many people at once, or something on your side is broken: an outdated app, a weak connection, a corrupted cache or a limit on your account. Check the web version at instagram.com first. If it fails there too and other people are reporting the same thing, wait. If only your app fails, update it, restart the phone and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
How do I check if Instagram is down?
Instagram has no public status page for the app itself. Meta's metastatus.com covers its business products, such as Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite and Shops, not the feed, stories or DMs. Instagram said in 2021 it was testing outage notices in the Activity feed, but not for every outage. In practice, open instagram.com on another network and look at crowd-report sites and recent posts about it.
Why are my Instagram stories not working?
Stories that will not load are usually a connection or cache problem: switch networks, then clear the cache on Android or reinstall on iPhone. Stories that will not post are often a file problem, such as an unusual format or a very long clip, so try a fresh photo first. If the music sticker is missing or a song is greyed out, that is licensing, not a bug.
Why are my Instagram DMs not working?
If messages fail to send, check the app version and your connection first. If you see a warning about sending too many messages, Instagram's Help Center says you may not be able to send more direct messages for a period of time, which only waiting fixes. Messages to people who do not follow you land in their requests, so a missing reply is not always a fault.
Does reinstalling Instagram delete my posts or messages?
No. Instagram's troubleshooting page says your photos and profile info are saved by Instagram, so deleting and reinstalling the app does not touch your account. Unposted drafts can be a different story, because they are stored on the phone. Make sure you know your password, or have access to your email or phone number, before you delete the app, since you will need to log in again.
How do I clear the Instagram cache?
On Android, open Settings, then Apps, choose Instagram, tap Storage and cache, and tap Clear cache. Google notes the menu names vary by phone maker. Clear cache, not Clear storage, which wipes the app's data and logs you out. iPhone has no clear-cache button for apps; the equivalent is deleting and reinstalling Instagram, or offloading it in iPhone Storage.
How do I report a problem to Instagram?
In the app, go to your profile, tap the menu in the top right, then Help under More info and support, then Report a problem. You can also shake your phone on the screen where the problem happened. Include your phone model, what you were doing and a screenshot, and tick the option to include logs and diagnostics. The help page does not promise a reply to bug reports.
