If an Instagram reel is not showing on your profile, check the Reels tab, your trial reels and your archive first: a reel can be posted to the Reels tab without the main grid, trial reels stay off your profile until you share them to everyone, and archived posts are one tap from coming back. Otherwise it was shared to Close Friends, deleted (restorable for 30 days), removed by Instagram or never finished posting.
If an Instagram reel is not showing on your profile, check three places first: the Reels tab (a reel can be posted there without the main grid), your trial reels (they stay off your profile until you share them to everyone) and your archive. If it is in none of those, it was shared to Close Friends only, deleted, removed by Instagram, or never finished posting, and each of those has its own screen to check.
Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on trial reels, showing an archived post again, recovering deleted content, sharing a reel with Close Friends, Account Status, collab posts and scheduled content, plus Instagram's guide to making Reels and Meta's publishing docs. Menu labels are quoted from those pages. Meta moves them, so if one differs on your phone, search for the word inside Settings.
This page is about a reel that is missing from your profile. If the reel is there and nobody is watching it, that is a distribution problem with different causes: start with why reels stop getting views. Both sit under our Instagram Reels guide, which covers the share screen where most of these settings live.
What you'll have at the end
The reel located, the reason it was not on your profile, and either the reel back on the grid or a clear answer on why it cannot come back. You need the Instagram app, the account that posted the reel, and about two minutes.
Instagram reel not showing on profile: the two-minute check
Work through these in order. They are sorted by how quickly each one rules itself out.
- 01Reels tab
On your profile. A reel can be here and not on the main grid.
- 02Trial reels
Open the reel. A View insights screen with Share to everyone means it is a trial.
- 03Archive
Menu, Archive, Posts archive.
- 04Recently deleted
Menu, Your activity. Kept for 30 days.
- 05Scheduled and drafts
Menu, Scheduled content. Your reels, Drafts.
- 06Account Status
Settings. Removed content is listed here.
| What you see | Likely cause | Where to check | The fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| In the Reels tab, not on the main grid | Posted without Share to Feed | The Reels tab of your profile | Leave it there, and turn Share to Feed on for the next reel |
| You see it under your reels; followers do not | It is a trial reel | Your reels, then View insights | Tap Share to everyone |
| Gone from the grid and the Reels tab | Archived, by you or someone with access | Menu, Archive, Posts archive | Options, then Show on Profile |
| Gone everywhere, in the last 30 days | Deleted | Menu, Your activity, Recently deleted | Options, then Restore |
| Gone, and nobody on your side removed it | Removed by Instagram | Settings, Account Status, Removed content | Request a review if you think it was a mistake |
| It never appeared at all | Still scheduled, still a draft, or the upload did not finish | Menu, Scheduled content; your reels, Drafts | Share now, or post the draft again |
| You see it, most followers do not | Audience was set to Close Friends | The Close Friends label on the reel | Post it again for everyone |
| It left your profile but is live on another account | A collab ended | The original author's profile | Ask the author to add you back as a collaborator |
Reel not appearing on the profile grid, but it is in the Reels tab
Your profile shows reels in two places, and they are filled by different rules. A reel that is in one and not the other has not gone anywhere.
- The tab your profile opens on, with photos and carousels
- Shows a reel only if it was shared to the grid
- Never shows a trial reel until you share it to everyone
- Shows the cover as a shorter tile
- The tab with the Reels icon, reels only
- Shows your shared reels whether or not they are on the main grid
- A reel can live here on its own
- Shows the cover at full height
Cause 1: it was posted without Share to Feed
Instagram's Reels guide lists the setting on the share screen: "Share to Feed: Toggle this on to have your reel appear in your main grid alongside your photos and carousels." With it off, the reel goes to the Reels tab only. Meta's publishing docs describe the same switch for scheduling tools: set to false, "the reel can only appear in the Reels tab." So a reel sent from a scheduler can skip your grid without you ever seeing a toggle.
Fix: nothing is broken, so decide whether it matters. For the next reel, check the toggle before you tap Share, and check your scheduler's equivalent setting. No Help Center page documents a way to add an already posted reel to the main grid, and Buffer's help center says of its own Share to Feed setting that it cannot be changed after publishing. If the Options menu on the reel offers a profile grid entry, that is the control. If it does not, the reel stays where it is.
Cause 2: it is a trial reel
This is the one that looks most like a bug. The Help Center is explicit: after you share a trial reel, "your followers won't see it in feed or Reels," and trial reels "don't appear in your profile unless you decide to share them to everyone." If you turned on Share to everyone automatically, that only happens when the reel performs well soon after publishing. A trial that did not clear that bar stays off your profile until you move it yourself.
- 1Go to your profile and open your reels
The Help Center's wording: tap to see your reels.
- 2Tap the trial reel
You can open it even though followers cannot see it on your profile.
- 3Tap View insights
Views, likes, comments and shares appear within 24 hours of sharing.
- 4Tap Share to everyone
Expected result: the reel is displayed on the main grid and the Reels tab, and followers may see it in Feed.

Whether to share a weak trial at all is a strategy question, covered in our trial reels strategy guide. The Trial Reels Deep Dive lesson in Instagram Ignited goes further into what to test and how to read the result before the reel reaches your followers.
Instagram reel missing from the profile entirely
If the reel is in neither tab, it has been archived, deleted or removed, or it never went out. Each has a screen that settles it.
Cause 3: it was archived
Archiving hides a post from everyone without deleting it. It is easy to do by accident from the Options menu, and anyone with access to the account can do it.
- 1Go to your profile and tap Menu
Menu is in the top right.
- 2Tap Archive
It sits below How you use Instagram.
- 3Switch to Posts archive
Tap Stories archive at the top, then tap Posts archive. Expected result: every post and reel you have archived.
- 4Tap the reel, then Options
Options is in the top right of the post.
- 5Select Show on Profile and confirm
Expected result: the reel returns to its original spot on your profile.

Cause 4: it was deleted
Deleted content is "removed from your account immediately and moved to Recently deleted," where it stays for 30 days. To restore it:
- Go to your profile and tap Menu in the top right.
- Below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.
- Below Removed and archived content, tap Recently deleted. The Help Center notes you may not see this if nothing was deleted recently.
- Tap Reels and videos at the top, then tap the reel.
- Tap Options, tap Restore, then tap Restore again. Expected result: the reel is back on your profile.
Recently deleted only exists in the app for iPhone and Android. If the reel is not in it, the Help Center says it may be older than 30 days, and at that point it is gone.
Cause 5: Instagram removed it
Open Settings and find Account Status, below More info and support. Removed content lists anything taken down for going against the Community Standards, and Request a review is on the same screen if you think the decision was wrong. Do not repost a reel that stays removed; the same file meets the same rule.
Cause 6: it never actually posted
Three versions of this, all quick to check:
- Still scheduled. Menu, then Scheduled content below Your insights and tools. Tap Options next to the reel and choose Share now or Reschedule. Our guide to scheduling Instagram Reels covers the limits.
- Still a draft. Open your reels and tap Drafts. Drafts are saved on the device you made them on, so check the phone you edited with. Recovery options are in our guide to recovering reel drafts.
- The upload did not finish. Instagram documents no state for a half-posted reel. If it is not on your profile, not scheduled and not in drafts, treat it as not posted and share it again on a stable connection.
You can see the reel, but other people cannot
When the reel is on your profile for you and missing for someone else, the cause is the audience, not the reel.
- Cause 7: Close Friends. On the share screen, Audience can be set to Close Friends, and then only that list sees the reel. People on the list see a Close Friends label on it. Scheduled reels keep the audience they had when you scheduled them. The Help Center describes no way to widen the audience afterwards, so post it again for everyone.
- A private account. Only approved followers can see your posts. A visitor who does not follow you sees none of your reels, which can look like one reel missing.
- A block. A blocked account cannot see your posts at all.
- Cause 8: a collab that ended. A collab reel shows on the collaborator's profile only after they accept. The original author can remove a collaborator at any time, the collaborator can leave, and a block in either direction ends it. In every case the reel stays on the original author's profile and disappears from the other one. If the author deletes the reel, it goes from both. More in our guide to Reels collab posts.
Troubleshooting: none of the eight fit
- The profile is stale. Pull down to refresh, then open your profile at instagram.com in a browser. If the reel shows there, the app is displaying an old copy; update it and log out and back in.
- You are on the wrong account. With several accounts on one phone, the reel may be on the other one. Check the handle at the top of the profile.
- The cover makes it hard to spot. A reel whose cover is a dark first frame can sit on the grid unnoticed. Our guide to changing a reel cover fixes that.
- It is there, with no views. That is reach, not visibility. The free Instagram Reach Drop Diagnoser ranks the likely causes from your own Insights.
Before you post the next reel
Most of the causes above are settings on the share screen. A ten-second look before you tap Share prevents the search afterwards.
- Trial is off, unless you mean to test with non-followers first
- Share to Feed is on if the reel belongs on the main grid
- Audience is not set to Close Friends
- Scheduled? Check the date and time, then find the reel under Scheduled content
- Posting through a scheduler? Find its setting for sharing to the feed
- Collab? Confirm the other account accepted the invite
- After posting, open your profile and look in both tabs
Reel not showing on profile: FAQ
Why is my reel not showing on my profile?
Check three places first. The Reels tab, because a reel can be posted there without the main grid. Your trial reels, because Instagram says trial reels don't appear in your profile unless you share them to everyone. And your archive. If it is in none of them, it was shared to Close Friends only, deleted, removed by Instagram, or never finished posting.
Why is my reel in the Reels tab but not on my main grid?
It was shared without the main grid. Instagram's Reels guide describes a Share to Feed toggle on the share screen: on, the reel appears in your main grid alongside photos and carousels; off, it stays in the Reels tab. Meta's publishing docs describe the same switch for scheduling tools. Nothing is wrong with the reel. Turn the toggle on for the next one.
Do trial reels show on your profile?
Not until you share them to everyone. Instagram's Help Center says followers won't see a trial reel in feed or Reels and that it doesn't appear in your profile. To move it, open your reels, tap the reel, tap View insights, then Share to everyone. It is then displayed on the main grid and the Reels tab. Checked October 2026.
How do I get an archived reel back on my profile?
Go to your profile and tap Menu. Below How you use Instagram, tap Archive, then tap Stories archive at the top and switch to Posts archive. Tap the reel, tap Options, select Show on Profile and confirm. Instagram's Help Center says the post returns to its original spot on your profile.
Can I recover a reel that disappeared from my profile?
If it was deleted in the last 30 days, yes. In the app go to Menu, Your activity, then Recently deleted, choose Reels and videos, tap the reel, tap Options and tap Restore. After 30 days Instagram deletes it permanently. If Instagram removed the reel, it is listed under Removed content in Account Status, where you can request a review.
Why can my followers not see a reel that I can see?
Three documented reasons. It is a trial reel, which is shown to people who don't follow you and kept off your profile. It was shared with Audience set to Close Friends, so only that list sees it. Or the person asking does not follow a private account, or has been blocked. Open the reel and look for a Close Friends label or the View insights screen of a trial.
Should I repost a reel that is missing from my profile?
Find the original first. If it was archived, scheduled or sitting in the Reels tab, reposting creates a duplicate. Instagram's trial reels page also warns that a reel may get limited reach if Instagram detects that you've previously shared the same content. Repost only when the original is gone for good or was shared to the wrong audience.
