To schedule Instagram Reels for free, finish the reel in the Instagram app, tap More options on the share screen, turn on Schedule this reel, pick a time and tap Schedule. It works on any public account, up to 25 posts a day and 30 days ahead. Meta Business Suite does the same from a computer. Third-party schedulers are only needed for what Meta's tools leave out, such as scheduled collab invites and trial reels.

Steps and limits checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center page on scheduled posts and reels, Meta's Business Help Center pages on reels in Meta Business Suite and scheduling in its mobile app, Meta's publishing docs, and the help centers of Buffer, Later and Metricool. Labels are quoted from those pages. Meta moves them between app versions, so if one differs on your phone, look one screen over.
Scheduling is the last step on the share screen in our Instagram Reels guide. This page covers the two free routes Meta gives you first, then the short list of things they cannot schedule and what to use instead.
What you'll have at the end
A reel queued to publish by itself at a time you chose, visible in your scheduled list, with the caption, cover and audience already set. Once you know the screen, scheduling adds a few taps to posting.
- A public Instagram account. The Help Center lists this as the one requirement
- The Instagram app updated to the latest version
- A finished reel, or the clips to finish it in the app
- Caption and cover ready, so the scheduled post is complete
- No product tags, collab invite, sponsored label or fundraiser on this reel
- A time to post. Use your own Insights, not a generic chart
How to schedule Instagram Reels in the app
This is the route to try first. Nothing to connect, no second login, and the reel is published by Instagram itself.
- 1Tap Create, then Reel
The Help Center puts Create in the top left, or swipe right anywhere in Feed.
- 2Select or record the video, then tap Next
Edit as you normally would. Expected result: the share screen with the caption box.
- 3Add the caption and cover
Finish everything a normal post needs. A scheduled reel goes out exactly as you leave it.
- 4Tap More options
Expected result: a settings list that includes Schedule this reel.
- 5Turn on Schedule this reel
Choose a date and time, up to 30 days ahead.
- 6Tap Done, then Back
Expected result: you are on the share screen again and the button now reads Schedule.
- 7Tap Schedule
Expected result: the reel is listed under Menu, Scheduled content, and is not on your profile yet.

Three limits come with it. You can schedule up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days in advance. The reel keeps "the same privacy and audience settings that were configured at the time of scheduling," so a reel scheduled for Close Friends stays that way. And product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers "aren't compatible with scheduled content at this time."
Edit, reschedule or cancel a scheduled reel
Scheduled reels live in one list, and you can reach it two ways.
- Go to your profile and tap Menu in the top right.
- Below Your insights and tools, tap Scheduled content.
- Tap Options next to the reel.
- Select Edit post, Reschedule, Share now or Delete. Expected result: the change shows in the list straight away.
The shortcut: tap Create, then Reel, then Scheduled. Use Share now when plans change, rather than deleting and uploading again.
Schedule Reels from a computer with Meta Business Suite
Business Suite is Meta's free desktop and mobile tool for Facebook and Instagram. It suits anyone who edits on a computer or wants a second person to schedule without sharing a password: you need full control of the Instagram account, or Content permission on it.
- 1Open Meta Business Suite and click Create reel
It is on the home page and in the Content tab.
- 2Under Post to, select your Instagram profile
Connected accounts publish to both by default, so deselect Facebook if the reel is for Instagram only.
- 3Under Media, click Add video
Then choose a thumbnail or upload an image under Thumbnail. Expected result: your video and cover in the preview.
- 4Under Reel details, write the caption
You can customise the details for Facebook and Instagram separately. Click Next.
- 5Choose to schedule
Select the date and time you want the reel to publish.
- 6Click Schedule
Expected result: the reel appears under Content, Posts and reels, on the Scheduled tab.

Two notes from the same help page. You can't create a reel from photos if posting to Instagram, and you can't edit a reel from a video there: the trim and audio step is for Facebook only. So finish the edit before you upload. To change a scheduled reel, find it on the Scheduled tab, click the three dots, then Manage post, then Reschedule post or Edit reel. On a phone, the Business Suite app has the same flow: tap +, then Reel, add the video, choose your Instagram profile under Share to, select Schedule for later and tap Schedule.
Schedule reels free: what each route can and cannot do
Both Meta routes are free with no post cap you are likely to hit. Third-party tools publish through Instagram's API, which is why they need a professional account, and why their feature lists look alike.
| Route | Account needed | Trial reels | Collab invites | Music | Free allowance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram app | Any public account | Not mentioned on the scheduling page | No | Full in-app library | 25 posts a day, 30 days ahead |
| Meta Business Suite | Full control or Content permission on the account | Not mentioned | Add collaborator is listed under Manage post | The audio step applies to Facebook only | No cap stated |
| Buffer | Business or creator, for automatic publishing | Yes: Auto or Manual sharing | Up to 3, when connected through a Facebook Page | Yes, when connected through a Facebook Page | Free plan with a queue cap |
| Later | Business or creator, for Auto Publish | Yes: public profile with 1,000+ followers | Yes, on desktop and iOS | Original audio only on Auto Publish | Free plan: 12 posts per profile a month |
| Metricool | Business or creator | Yes: Trial Reel content type | Up to 5 | Only audio in Metricool's library | Free plan with a monthly cap |

What the native scheduler cannot do, and the workaround
The app's scheduler is deliberately plain. These are the gaps, as the documentation states them, and the cleanest way around each.
| You want to schedule | What the docs say about the app | Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Collab reels | Collaborative posts aren't compatible with scheduled content | Schedule in Buffer, Later or Metricool, or publish by hand and add the collaborator at posting time |
| Trial reels | The scheduling page does not mention them | Buffer, Later and Metricool each document a scheduled trial reel |
| Trial and collab together | Buffer and Metricool both say the two cannot be combined | None. Pick one: test the idea first, or co-post it |
| Product tags | Not compatible with scheduled content | Post by hand, or use a tool's notification mode and add the tags in the app |
| Sponsored posts and fundraisers | Not compatible with scheduled content | Post by hand at the agreed time |
| Stories | The app schedules reels, photos and carousels | Meta Business Suite schedules Stories |
Collabs and trial reels are the two that matter for growth. Meta's publishing docs include a collaborators field and a trial reel setting, which is why third-party tools can offer both while the app's own scheduler does not. The details differ by tool: Buffer allows up to 3 collaborators and needs the account connected through a Facebook Page, Later sends collaborator invites from desktop and iOS only, and Metricool allows up to 5. A scheduled collab is still an invite. The reel shows on the other profile only after that account accepts, as our guide to Reels collab posts explains.
- You run one account and post from your phone
- The account is personal: public is the only requirement
- The reel uses a song from Instagram's music library
- It is a normal reel: no collab, no product tags
- The reel needs a scheduled collab invite
- You want trial reels in the same calendar as everything else
- The same video goes to several platforms
- Someone else drafts and you approve
An Instagram Reels scheduler routine that holds up
A scheduler only helps if there is something to put in it. The routine we use on creator accounts is one filming block and one scheduling block a week, with the review feeding the next round.
- 01Batch film
Several reels in one session.
- 02Edit and export
Cover and captions included.
- 03Pick the slots
From your own active times.
- 04Schedule
In the app or Business Suite.
- 05Check the list
Scheduled content, every reel.
- 06Review
Insights, then adjust the slots.
For the slots, start from your own audience. Business Suite's post composer has an Active times option that suggests times "based on when followers were most active on Facebook and Instagram over the past 7 days," and our guide to the best time to post on Instagram shows how to read the same data in Insights. The Batch Filming Workflow and Posting Times and Frequency lessons in Instagram Ignited cover the two halves of this routine in detail: filling a month of slots in a day, and testing which slots deserve to be filled.
Troubleshooting scheduled reels
- No Schedule this reel toggle. The account is private, the app is out of date, or the reel carries a product tag, collab, sponsored label or fundraiser. Fix those, or schedule from Business Suite.
- A third-party reel went to your phone instead of posting. It fell into notification mode. Check the account type and the file. Buffer publishes automatically only between 3 seconds and 15 minutes and up to 300 MB; Later limits Auto Publish from Android to 90 seconds.
- Stuck on processing. Buffer's advice applies to any tool: sharing now may not leave time for the video to process, so schedule a few minutes ahead instead.
- It published but is not on the main grid. The tool's Share to Feed setting was off. Buffer's help page says it cannot be changed after publishing. See why a reel is not showing on your profile.
- The cover is the first frame. The tool sent no cover image. Set one before scheduling; the steps are in how to change a reel cover.
- The scheduler rejects a long reel. API tools stop at 15 minutes while the app accepts more. The limits by route are in how long reels can be.
- Caption, cover and tags are final
- Audience is what you intend: scheduled reels keep the setting they had
- Share to Feed is on if the reel belongs on the main grid
- The date and time are right, and inside 30 days
- In a third-party tool: the reel is set to publish automatically
- The reel shows in your scheduled list after you finish
Scheduling Instagram Reels: FAQ
How do I schedule a reel on Instagram?
Create the reel as usual and tap Next until you reach the share screen. Tap More options, turn on Schedule this reel, choose a date and time, tap Done, tap Back, then tap Schedule. The reel then sits under Menu, Scheduled content until it publishes. Those are the steps in Instagram's Help Center, checked October 2026. Your account must be public.
Can you schedule Instagram Reels for free?
Yes, two ways. The Instagram app schedules reels on any public account, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days in advance. Meta Business Suite schedules reels from a computer or its mobile app at no charge. Third-party tools such as Buffer, Later and Metricool also list free plans that include reels, each with its own cap on posts.
How far in advance can you schedule a reel?
In the Instagram app, up to 30 days in advance, with a limit of 25 scheduled posts a day. Those figures come from Instagram's Help Center, checked October 2026. Meta's help pages for Business Suite state no horizon, and third-party schedulers set their own. A scheduled reel keeps the privacy and audience settings it had when you scheduled it.
Can you schedule trial reels or collab reels?
Not both in the app. Instagram's Help Center says collaborative posts aren't compatible with scheduled content, and its scheduling page does not mention trial reels. Buffer, Later and Metricool each document scheduling a trial reel and inviting collaborators on a scheduled reel, for business or creator accounts. Buffer and Metricool both note that a trial reel cannot carry collaborators.
Why is there no option to schedule my reel?
The Help Center lists one requirement: a public account. Switch from private to public, update the app and look under More options on the share screen. The toggle also will not work with product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts or fundraisers, so remove those first. If it is still missing, schedule the same reel from Meta Business Suite.
What is the best Instagram Reels scheduler?
For one account, the Instagram app: it is free, needs no connection and gives you the full editor and music library before you schedule. Use Meta Business Suite when you want a computer and a calendar. Pay for a third-party scheduler only for something Meta's tools leave out, such as scheduled collab invites, trial reels or posting to several platforms at once.
Can I edit a scheduled reel before it posts?
Yes. Go to your profile, tap Menu, and below Your insights and tools tap Scheduled content. Tap Options next to the reel and choose Edit post, Reschedule, Share now or Delete. You can reach the same list by tapping Create, then Reel, then Scheduled. In Meta Business Suite, scheduled reels are under Content, on the Scheduled tab.
Thirty days of slots. Now film something to put in them.
Instagram Ignited, included in All Access, covers the content matrix, scripting for retention, batch filming a month of reels and testing posting times and frequency against your own Insights. One subscription also opens the other three programs, live coaching and the private community.
