Quick answer

The best Instagram unfollow app is Instagram's own data export, read by you or by a tool that never logs in. Store apps that list unfollowers after you sign in collect your follower list in a way Meta's API does not offer, and Instagram names third-party logins as a reason accounts get restricted. Rank the seven options by how they reach your list, then pick the top of the table.

The best Instagram unfollow app is not an app from the store: it is Instagram's own data export, read by you or by a tool that never logs in to your account. Every app that lists your unfollowers after you sign in is collecting your follower list in a way Meta's official API does not offer, and Instagram's Help Center names that pattern as a reason accounts get restricted.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center on exporting your information, data scraping restrictions and third-party apps and unauthorized activity, Instagram's Terms of Use, Meta's Platform Terms and its Instagram API reference, and the apps' own App Store listings and websites. We read the documentation; we did not install or score the apps.

So this is a ranking of seven ways to find out who unfollowed you, ordered by what each one does to your account. The top three are safe, and the first two cost nothing. It sits in the analyze section of our guide to the best Instagram tools, next to the companion piece on unfollow tools that claim to need no login.

Best Instagram unfollow app: the seven options ranked

The ranking turns on one question: how does the tool get your follower list? The answer decides both the risk and how much you can trust the result.

Options 1 to 4 never touch your account: you either look at the app yourself or read a file Instagram gave you. Option 4 ranks below option 3 only because your follower lists end up on someone else's server. Options 5 to 7 either act as your account or pretend to know things they cannot, and they are ordered by how much of the method is hidden from you.

How an Instagram unfollow app gets your follower list

Not from Meta. The Instagram API that Meta documents for developers returns two numbers for an account, followers_count and follows_count, and no field or edge that returns the usernames behind them. An app cannot ask Meta who follows you.

That leaves one route for an app that shows names: sign in as you, read your followers and following the way the Instagram app does, save the lists, and compare them with yesterday's.

What a sign-in unfollow app does with your account
  1. 01
You sign in inside the app

It now holds a way to act as your account

  2. 02
    It requests your lists

    Followers and following, fetched automatically

  3. 03
    It stores a snapshot

On its servers or on your phone

  4. 04
    It compares snapshots

Names missing today are shown as unfollowers

  5. 05
    Instagram may flag it

Its Help Center says teams detect and block scraping patterns

Three official documents describe that pattern, and none of them approves of it:

  • Instagram's Terms of Use say you cannot access or collect information "in an automated way without our express permission, regardless of whether such automated access or collection is undertaken while logged-in to an Instagram account", and that nobody may "request or collect Instagram usernames, passwords, or misappropriate access tokens".
  • Meta's Platform Terms tell developers they "must not separately request or collect a Meta user's login credentials for any Meta Products".
  • Instagram's Help Center says an account may be restricted and flagged for review for data scraping, and lists three typical causes: automated collection without permission, a username and password given to a third-party app or website, and an app or service used to interact with Instagram in unauthorized ways.

None of this means every user of such an app is restricted. It means the method sits outside the rules, and the account carrying the risk is yours, not the developer's.

The "who unfollowed me" apps: what their own listings say

Here are three widely listed examples. The table quotes their US App Store listings and websites as they read in October 2026. We do not recommend any of them, for the reason above: each works on an Instagram account you connect inside the app, and shows a list Meta's API does not provide.

AppWhat the listing or site saysPrice shownIts own disclaimer
FollowMeter for Instagram"Sign in securely". Says it only reads follower data you already have access to and never posts, likes or comments for youFree to start, with a PRO subscription"Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Instagram or Meta Platforms, Inc."
Reports+ Unfollowers FollowerAdd and manage up to 4 accounts. Lists accounts not following back and ghost followersIn-app purchases from $3.99 to $29.99"Not sponsored, endorsed, or administered by, or associated with, Instagram"
nFollowers: Unfollowers ReportTracks new followers and unfollowers, and follows and unfollows users from inside the appPro at $2.99 a week, $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year"Not sponsored, endorsed or administered by or associated with Instagram"

Sources: followmeter.com and the App Store listings for Reports+ and nFollowers, checked October 2026. Prices are the in-app purchase amounts shown on the US listings.

Two details are worth noticing. Every one of them states that Instagram has nothing to do with it. And FollowMeter's own site says what honest tools all say: "Instagram never shares who views your profile", so an app that promises profile visitors is selling data it cannot have.

The prices deserve a second look too. A weekly plan at $2.99 comes to about $155 if it runs for a year, for two lists Instagram exports to you for free. And a store app only knows what it saw the last time it synced, so its history has the same gaps as a pair of exports, with your login as the extra cost.

The safe alternative: your own data export

Instagram will hand you the same two lists the apps collect, as a file, on request. Reading a file you own breaks no rule, and your password never leaves Instagram.

See who does not follow you back, with no app signed in
  1. 1
    Open Accounts Center

Settings, then Your information and permissions, then Export your information.

  2. 2
Create an export to your device

Pick the profile, then choose only the followers and following information.

  3. 3
    Pick the format and start

HTML opens in a browser, JSON suits tools. Leave media out to keep the file small.

  4. 4
    Download it within 4 days

Instagram notifies you when it is ready, and says the link can take up to 30 days to arrive.

  5. 5
    Compare the two lists

Paste both lists of usernames into a spreadsheet, or open the file in a browser-side analyzer.

  6. 6
    Keep the file and repeat

A second export next month, compared with this one, shows who left in between.

The spreadsheet version takes five minutes. Put your followers in column A and the accounts you follow in column B, then flag the ones that do not follow back:

Column A: followers (from the export)
Column B: following (from the export)
Column C, row 2: =IF(COUNTIF(A:A, B2)=0, "not following back", "")

Fill column C down. To find who unfollowed, put this month's
followers in column A and last month's followers in column B.
The flagged names are the ones who left.

The step-by-step version of this method, with the red flags of fake "no login" tools, is in our guide to Instagram unfollow tools without login.

For a single name you need none of this. Open your own profile, tap your follower count and look the person up. That is option 1, and for most people who search for an unfollow app it answers the real question in ten seconds.

What no Instagram unfollow app can tell you

Whatever the method, the data has the same blind spots. Knowing them saves you from reading meaning into a list that has none.

What a follower comparison can and cannot show
It cannot show
  • Who viewed your profile
  • Whether a missing account unfollowed, deactivated or was removed
  • Who blocked you, with any certainty
  • The exact moment someone left
  • Why they left
It can show
  • Accounts you follow that do not follow you
  • Accounts that follow you that you do not follow
  • Names present last month and missing now
  • How your totals moved between two dates
  • Which names to check by hand

A name that vanished could be an unfollow, a deactivated account or a block, and the list looks identical in each case. If one person matters, our guide on how to tell if someone blocked you covers the checks. Browser extensions that promise more belong to option 6; our review of Instagram Chrome extensions sorts the safe ones from the rest.

If you already use a sign-in unfollow app

Close it down in this order. The steps are Instagram's own, from its pages on unauthorized activity and scraping restrictions.

Clean up after a sign-in unfollow app
  • Change your Instagram password. Instagram says this logs out every device and session
  • Check recent login activity and remove any login you do not recognize
  • Revoke the app's access to your account in your Instagram settings
  • Turn on two-factor authentication, with an authenticator app if you can
  • Confirm the email and phone number on the account are still yours
  • Cancel the app's subscription in the App Store or Google Play, where it is billed
  • Delete the app, then request a data export so you have a clean starting snapshot

Our walkthrough of Instagram two-factor authentication covers the setup. If the account is already limited, the restricted account guide explains Account Status and the review request.

Do you need an unfollow tracker at all?

Usually not. Followers come and go on every account, and a list of names rarely changes what you post next. The numbers that do are in Insights: reach from non-followers, shares, saves, and which posts came before a dip. Our piece on why an Instagram account is not growing starts from those.

A monthly export is enough for anyone who is curious. For everything else, read the metrics that point at a fix. The Instagram Ignited program has a lesson on reading Insights with a weekly review, and another on the community metrics worth tracking month to month.

Instagram unfollow apps: FAQ

What is the best app to see who unfollowed you on Instagram?

The safest option is not a store app. Export your followers and following from Accounts Center and compare two exports taken a few weeks apart, by hand or with a tool that reads the file in your browser. Apps that show unfollowers after you sign in collect your follower list in a way Meta's documented API does not provide, which is the pattern Instagram restricts accounts for.

Are Instagram unfollow apps safe?

Apps that only read an export file you downloaded are low risk, because they never touch your account. Apps that ask you to sign in to Instagram inside them are not. Instagram's Help Center says an app given your login details can gain complete access to your account, and lists giving a third-party app your username and password as a reason accounts are restricted for data scraping.

Can Instagram restrict your account for using an unfollow app?

Yes. Instagram's Help Center says an account may be restricted and flagged for review when it detects automated collection of information, a username and password given to a third-party app, or a service that interacts with Instagram in unauthorized ways. It also says you may see a "Try again later" error when inauthentic activity is detected. Checked October 2026.

Does Instagram have an official unfollowers feature?

No. Instagram shows your current followers and following, and it will export both lists to you on request, but it does not keep a list of people who left. Meta's developer documentation for the Instagram API exposes follower and following counts only, with no field that returns the usernames. Checked October 2026.

Do unfollow apps need my Instagram password?

Any app that shows your follower list inside the app needs access to your account, because Meta's documented API returns counts and not names. That means signing in with your credentials, in one form or another. Meta's Platform Terms tell developers they must not separately request or collect a Meta user's login credentials, so an app that asks is already outside the official route.

How do I see who does not follow me back without an app?

Request an export of your followers and following in Accounts Center, under Your information and permissions, then Export your information. Paste the two lists of usernames into two spreadsheet columns and flag every name in the following column that is missing from the followers column. Small accounts can do the same by scrolling both lists in the Instagram app.

Can an app unfollow people for me safely?

No. Unfollowing changes your account, so the app has to act as you, with your login or inside your logged-in browser. Mass unfollowing at speed also falls under Meta's spam policy, which covers engaging "either manually or automatically, at very high frequencies". Unfollow by hand from each profile: tap Following, then Unfollow. The other person is not notified.
