Quick answer

Instagram publishes no follow limit per day. The only official number is a cap of 7,500 accounts followed in total. Daily figures quoted by third-party guides in 2026 range from about 50 to 500 and contradict each other, because the real limit is a moving rate limit that weighs pace and account signals. Follow by hand in small sessions and treat every quoted number as an estimate.

The Instagram follow limit per day is not a published number: Instagram's only official follow limit is a cap of 7,500 accounts followed in total, and every daily or hourly figure you see quoted is an unofficial estimate. Third-party guides published in 2026 put the daily figure anywhere from about 50 to 500, depending on the source and the age of the account.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center page on how many accounts you can follow, its page on unauthorized activity and Meta's spam policy. The unofficial figures are quoted from four named third-party guides, each dated in the table below. None of them comes from Instagram.

A follow limit is one of the milder ways an account gets held back. For the full list, from action blocks to disabled accounts, see our Instagram account help hub and the triage guide to an Instagram account restricted, blocked or disabled.

The Instagram following limit: what is official

One number. Instagram's Help Center says: "To help reduce spam, Instagram doesn't allow anyone to follow more than 7,500 people." Anyone who tries sees an error message, regardless of how many followers they have, and accounts that follow more than 7,500 did so before the cap existed.

That is the whole of the published rule. The Help Center gives no follows per day, no follows per hour and no unfollow limit. What sits behind the daily limit is Meta's spam policy, which bans engaging with content "either manually or automatically, at very high frequencies" and lets Meta restrict accounts "acting at lower frequencies when other indicators of Spam (e.g., posting repetitive content) or signals of inauthenticity are present".

How many people can you follow on Instagram per day?

Nobody outside Instagram knows, and the guides that give a number do not agree. Here is the daily figure four of them quote for an established account.

Daily follow figure quoted for an established account (unofficial)
Metricool
about 150
Unfollr
150–200
SocialChamp
300–500
Tagembed
300–500

Bars show the upper end of each quoted range. None of these figures is published by Instagram. Source: Metricool (21 Jan 2026), SocialChamp (26 Feb 2026), Unfollr (6 Jun 2026), Tagembed (2 Jul 2026), read October 2026

SourcePublishedNew accountEstablished accountHourly pace
Metricool21 January 2026No separate figureAbout 150 follows and unfollows a dayAbout 10 an hour
SocialChamp26 February 2026About 100 a day, 5 an hour300 to 500 a dayUp to 20 an hour
Unfollr6 June 202650 to 100 a day, 7 to 13 an hour150 to 200 a day20 to 30 an hour
Tagembed2 July 2026All actions combined under 500 a day300 to 500 a day20 an hour

The highest figure is more than three times the lowest, and the sources say why themselves. Tagembed calls its numbers "community-observed safe ranges, not officially published figures". Unfollr writes that "Instagram doesn't publish these numbers" and that it adjusts them without notice.

They agree on two things, and those are worth more than any single number: new accounts get far less room than old ones, and pace matters as much as the total. Unfollow figures are looser still, running from about 150 a day (Metricool, follows and unfollows combined) to 1,000 a day (Tagembed).

How the Instagram follow limit per day works

It works as a rate limit, not a quota. A quota would be the same for everyone and would reset on a schedule. The spam policy describes something else: a judgment that combines how fast you act with other signals about the account. That is why one account can follow a few dozen people in an afternoon with no problem while another is stopped much earlier.

Often confused: the following cap and the daily follow limit

Two different limits behind one error
Following cap
  • 7,500 accounts followed in total
  • Published in Instagram's Help Center
  • The same for every account
  • Does not expire or reset
  • Fix: unfollow accounts
Daily follow limit
  • A rate limit on how fast you follow
  • Not published anywhere by Instagram
  • Varies with the account and its signals
  • Lifts on its own after you stop
  • Fix: stop, remove tools and wait

What triggers "You can't follow any more people"

Two things can stop the follow button: the cap or the rate limit. The Following number on your own profile tells you which.

Work out which limit you hit
  1. 1
Open your profile and read the Following number
  2. 2
At 7,500: you are at the cap

Unfollow accounts you no longer want. Waiting will not help.

  3. 3
Below 7,500: it is a rate limit

Stop following for now. Retrying keeps the pattern going.

  4. 4
Check what else is acting as you

Pause growth tools, revoke third-party apps you do not recognize and change your password.

  5. 5
Resume later, by hand and slower

If the block returns quickly, something is still connected.

A rate-limit block on following is an action block, and it behaves like the others. Our checklist for the Instagram action blocked fix covers the three types and what not to do while one is active.

Before you blame the follow limit
  • The Following number is below 7,500
  • The follow fails on several accounts, not just one profile
  • The account you tried is not private with a request already pending
  • Account Status shows no feature you cannot use
  • No growth tool or unfollow app is connected to the account
  • The app is up to date

A safe follow cadence, without inventing a number

We do not run accounts to a daily follow target, because there is no reliable one to run to. These are the rules we use instead.

SituationWhat we doWhy
New account, first weeksFollow by hand, a few at a time, as you come across accounts you would actually engage withEvery source gives new accounts the least room
Established accountShort sessions spread through the day; never one bulk sessionPace is weighed as well as totals
After any action blockNo outbound follows until it lifts, then restart well below the old paceA second block soon after the first is the pattern to avoid
Tidying a following listUnfollow by hand in small sessions; no app that asks for your loginInstagram warns that such apps gain complete access to the account
Any accountNo follow-unfollow as a growth methodIt is the behavior the limit exists to stop

If you want a ceiling anyway, use the lowest figure in the table of quoted numbers as a line not to approach, not as a target to hit. Following is a weak growth lever in any case. Reach comes from content that gets recommended, which is what Instagram Ignited teaches: hooks, trial reels and Instagram SEO, with a lesson on Explore and recommendations that covers what to do instead of follow-unfollow.

  • Action block. A temporary refusal of one action, such as following, liking or commenting. See the action blocked checklist.
  • Rate limit. A limit on how fast an action can be repeated, as opposed to a cap on the total.
  • Follow-unfollow. Following accounts in bulk to prompt follow-backs, then unfollowing them. Meta's spam policy also bans exchanging engagement such as follows.
  • Engagement pod. A group that trades likes and comments. Our guide to Instagram engagement pods explains the risk.
  • DM limit. The messaging equivalent of the follow limit, covered in Instagram DM ban.

Instagram follow limits: FAQ

What is the Instagram follow limit per day in 2026?

Instagram does not publish one. Its only official follow limit is a cap of 7,500 accounts followed in total. Third-party guides published in 2026 quote daily figures from about 50 for a new account to as many as 500 for an established one, and they disagree with each other by more than three times. Treat every daily number as an estimate. Checked October 2026.

How many people can you follow on Instagram in total?

You can follow up to 7,500 accounts. Instagram's Help Center says the cap exists to help reduce spam and applies to everyone, whatever their follower count. Anyone who tries to follow more sees an error message. Accounts that follow more than 7,500 did so before the limit was introduced. To follow someone new at the cap, unfollow another account first.

Is there an Instagram unfollow limit per day?

There is no published unfollow limit. Instagram's Help Center does not give one, and third-party figures range from about 150 a day to 1,000 a day depending on the source. Unfollowing in bulk can trigger the same "Try again later" block as following in bulk, so tidy a following list by hand in small sessions and avoid apps that ask for your Instagram login.

How long does the Instagram follow limit last?

The 7,500 cap does not expire; it lifts only when you unfollow accounts. A rate-limit block on following has no published duration. Third-party guides commonly describe a first block as lasting hours to a couple of days, but that is observation, not a rule. If your notice names an end date, go by that, and do not test the follow button while you wait.

Do new Instagram accounts have a lower follow limit?

Instagram does not say, but every third-party source we checked gives new accounts much less room: roughly 50 to 100 follows a day in the first months against 150 to 500 for older accounts. Meta's spam policy supports the idea in general terms, since it restricts accounts acting at lower frequencies when other signals of inauthenticity are present.

Why does Instagram say I can't follow any more people?

There are two causes. Either you already follow 7,500 accounts, which is the cap for everyone, or Instagram has temporarily blocked the follow action because recent activity looked automated. Check the Following number on your profile. At 7,500, unfollow accounts you no longer want. Below it, stop following for now, remove any growth tool and wait for the block to lift.
