How to Fix 'Your Account Is Restricted' on Instagram

Fix a restricted Instagram account by cause: Account Status appeals, action blocks, login checks and scraping flags, plus what not to do while you wait.

Quick answer

To fix a restricted Instagram account, first find the cause in Account Status. A listed violation you disagree with gets Request a Review. An action block with nothing listed usually lifts once you stop the repeated action and remove third-party apps. A login check or scraping flag needs the on-screen verification plus a password change and two-factor authentication. Do not open a new account to get around it.

To fix "Your account is restricted" on Instagram, open Account Status to see which features are limited and why, then tap Request a Review if you think Instagram got it wrong. If Account Status shows nothing, you most likely hit a temporary action block: stop the repeated action, disconnect third-party apps and secure your login.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on Account Status, disabled accounts, data scraping restrictions and Oversight Board appeals. Instagram does not publish how long each restriction lasts; where this page gives a sequence, it is operator practice, not an official timeline.

The fix checklist

Work through these in order
  • Read Account Status: Settings, then Account Status
  • Match the message to its cause in the table below
  • Stop the action that triggered it, and pause any scheduling or growth tool
  • Remove third-party apps you do not use under apps and websites
  • Change your password and turn on two-factor authentication
  • Complete any "confirm it's you" check Instagram shows
  • Tap Request a Review on anything you believe is a mistake
  • Keep posting normally on the same account; do not open a new one

Which restriction do you have?

"Restricted" covers several different situations, and each one has a different fix. Find the message you are seeing:

Action blocked"Try again later" when liking, following or commentingRepeating one action too fast, or an automation toolStop the action and remove tools; it lifts on its own

Data scraping flag"Restricted for data scraping"A third-party app collecting data with your loginRemove apps, change password, turn on 2FA
Suspended or disabledLocked out with a suspension or disabled noticeSerious or repeated violationsFollow the on-screen review steps when you log in

1. Read Account Status first

Account Status is Instagram's own record of your standing. It shows content removed for breaking the Community Guidelines, whether your posts are eligible to be recommended to people who do not follow you, and features that are limited. It is the only place that tells you the cause with certainty, so check it before you change anything. If reach has also dropped, our guide to why reels stop getting views explains the recommendation side of Account Status.

2. Appeal with Request a Review

Next to each violation in Account Status there is a Request a Review option. Use it when you believe the decision is wrong: explain briefly, once, and leave it. Instagram says reviews of removed content can take up to 90 days. If Instagram reviews a content decision and you still disagree, you may be able to appeal to the independent Oversight Board, but only within 15 days of the final decision.

For a disabled or suspended account, the review route is the on-screen instructions you see when you try to log in. Follow those rather than any third-party "recovery service", many of which are scams.

3. Clear an action block

An action block stops you liking, following, commenting or messaging for a while. It is usually triggered by doing the same thing many times quickly, or by tools that act on your behalf. Stop the action entirely, remove any automation that logs in as you and use the account normally. Most clear without an appeal. Instagram's own guidance is clear that apps offering likes or followers are not affiliated with it and put your account at risk.

4. Secure the login

Login checkpoints and data scraping flags are security signals. Instagram's data scraping help page lists the steps: review recent login activity and remove logins you do not recognize, revoke access for third-party apps, change your password, which logs out every device, and turn on two-factor authentication. If Instagram asks for a code or a video selfie to confirm it is you, complete it; it exists to prove a real person owns the account.

5. The waiting-game rules

While a restriction is active
Do not
  • Open a new account to get around it
  • Submit the same appeal repeatedly
  • Pay a third-party "unban" service
  • Run follow, like or DM automation
Do
  • Keep using the same account normally
  • Post original content that follows the guidelines
  • Check Account Status weekly
  • Keep 2FA on and apps disconnected

Creating a new account to get around a restriction breaks Instagram's terms, and it resets your audience to zero. If your standing has been fine for a while, the restriction usually ends; the account you rebuilt in the meantime is the one at risk.

How to avoid the next one

Most restrictions trace back to three habits: automation that acts as you, content that repeats what others posted, and unlabeled AI imagery. Instagram tightened originality rules in 2026, and our guides to how the Instagram algorithm works and Instagram's AI label rules cover what keeps an account eligible. If you are wondering whether a specific person blocked you rather than Instagram limiting you, this guide shows how to tell. Meta Verified adds access to human support, covered in how to get verified on Instagram, but it does not override the rules. Growing without these risks is the core of our Instagram Ignited program.

Restricted Instagram account: FAQ

How do I fix a restricted account on Instagram?

Open Account Status from your profile settings to see what is restricted and why. If a post or action broke a rule and you think the decision is wrong, tap Request a Review. If nothing is listed, the limit is usually a temporary action block from unusual activity: stop the repeated action, remove third-party apps, secure the login and wait for it to lift.

How long does an Instagram restriction last?

It depends on the cause. Temporary action blocks usually lift on their own once you stop the activity that triggered them. Restrictions tied to violations stay until the review or the restriction period ends, and Account Status shows what applies to you. Instagram says a review of removed content can take up to 90 days, so start the appeal early.

Can I appeal an Instagram restriction?

Yes, in most cases. Account Status shows violations with a Request a Review option, and disabled accounts show on-screen review instructions when you log in. If Instagram reviews a content decision and you still disagree, you may be able to appeal to the Oversight Board within 15 days of the final decision.

Should I make a new account if mine is restricted?

No. Instagram's terms do not allow creating a new account to get around a restriction or a disabled account,. It also restarts your audience from zero and can turn a temporary limit into a permanent loss. Fix or appeal the original account.

Why was my Instagram account restricted for data scraping?

Instagram flags accounts when it detects activity that collects information in unauthorized ways, which usually traces to a third-party app or tool with your login. Remove apps you do not recognize, check login activity, change your password and turn on two-factor authentication, then follow the on-screen steps to confirm the account is yours.

Does Meta Verified help with a restricted account?

Meta Verified subscribers get access to account support from a person, which can make it easier to ask about a restriction or a login problem. It does not override Instagram's rules or guarantee that a restriction is lifted. Subscribing is no substitute for fixing the cause and using Request a Review.
