To deactivate Instagram temporarily, go to Accounts Center, open Deactivation or deletion for the account and choose Deactivate account. Your profile, photos, comments and likes are hidden until you log back in, and nothing is deleted. You can only deactivate once a week and you need your password, so log out of every device first or an old session will reactivate the account.
To deactivate Instagram temporarily, open your profile menu, go to Accounts Center, find Deactivation or deletion for the account and choose Deactivate account, then Continue and confirm. Your profile, photos, comments and likes are hidden from everyone until you reactivate by logging back in, and nothing is deleted.
Steps checked in October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center article on temporarily deactivating your profile. Meta is moving people from Accounts Center to Meta Account settings gradually, so your menu labels may differ slightly; the Deactivation or deletion screen is the same.
Most people who search for this want a break without losing what they built. Deactivation does exactly that, and it is fully reversible, which deletion is not. Our guide to deleting your Instagram account covers the permanent route and the data export. This page goes deeper on deactivation: the two menu paths, the once-a-week limit, what happens while you are away, and the mistake that quietly undoes it. If you are here because Instagram restricted or disabled the account rather than because you want a break, start with our Instagram account help hub; deactivating does not clear a restriction.
Before you deactivate: the pre-flight check
- Confirm you know the password; you need it to deactivate and to come back
- Check two-factor authentication still reaches your current phone or app
- Log out of old phones, tablets and shared computers
- Remove the account from schedulers and apps that log in for you
- Pause ads or brand posts that use the account as their identity
- Tell close contacts or clients how to reach you meanwhile
- Decide whether making the account private would be enough
The login items matter most. Instagram says you need to be able to log in to deactivate, and reactivation is just logging in, so a device or app that still holds your session can bring the account back without you noticing. Our two-factor authentication guide covers backup codes, which save you if you come back to a new phone.
How to deactivate Instagram temporarily in the app
Instagram's Help Center shows two versions of the path depending on what you see at the bottom of Accounts Center. Open Accounts Center first and check which one you have.
- 1Go to your profile
Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
- 2Tap the menu
The three lines in the top right.
- 3Tap Accounts Center, then Manage account
A list of your profiles appears.
- 4Tap Manage next to the profile
Pick the exact account you want to hide.
- 5Tap Deactivation or deletion
Then choose the account again if asked.
- 6Tap Deactivate account, then Continue
Follow the prompts and confirm. Expected result: you are logged out and the profile is hidden.
- 1Profile, then menu
Same as above.
- 2Tap Accounts Center, then Personal details
Personal details sits near the top.
- 3Tap Account ownership and control
This is where deactivation and deletion live.
- 4Tap Deactivation or deletion
Select the profile, then Continue.
- 5Choose Deactivate account
Not Delete account. Read the screen before you tap.
- 6Follow the prompts to confirm
Expected result: logged out, profile hidden until you log back in.
Temporarily disable Instagram from a computer or browser
Instagram says you can deactivate from a computer, a mobile browser or the app. On instagram.com, click More in the bottom left, then Settings, then Accounts Center, and follow the same version A or version B path. A browser is the fallback when the app does not show the option, and it is often clearer on a larger screen when you manage several accounts and need to pick the right one.
What happens while your account is deactivated
Instagram's description is short: your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you reactivate by logging back in. In practice that means people who visit your profile link find nothing, your comments on other posts are hidden, and so are your likes. Nothing is removed from Instagram's side, so when you return the account comes back with its followers, posts and username.
- Day 0You deactivate
You are logged out. Profile, photos, comments and likes are hidden.
- During the breakAccount stays hidden
No end date in the Help Center article. Do not log in on any device.
- Any dayYou log back in
The account reactivates and your content reappears.
- Within a weekLimit applies
You can only deactivate once a week, so a second break may have to wait.

Threads is managed separately. Instagram's Threads deactivation article says deactivating your Threads account does not affect your Instagram account, and Threads has its own once-a-week limit. If you want a break from both, deactivate each one and read the confirmation screens.
Deactivating one account when you run several
Creators often keep a main account, a backup and a niche page in the same Accounts Center. Deactivation works on one profile at a time, and the others stay live, so the only real risk is choosing the wrong one. When the Deactivation or deletion screen asks which profile to act on, read the handle twice; a backup that uses the same profile picture is easy to confuse with the main account.
Check the links between accounts too. If your other profiles mention the hidden handle in their bio, a pinned post or a highlight, visitors will tap through to a page that shows nothing. Edit those references for the length of the break, or add a short line saying the account is paused and where to find you meanwhile.
Business and creator accounts: extra checks
A professional account is connected to more people than a personal one, and deactivating it does not warn any of them. Before you hide a business or creator account, work through these on purpose:
- Brand deals in progress. Finish or reschedule any sponsored posts you promised on this handle. A partner who cannot find your profile mid-campaign will assume the worst.
- Ads and boosted posts. Stop or move any campaign that runs under the account's identity, so you are not paying for ads that point to a hidden profile.
- Team access. If an assistant, agency or scheduler logs in for you, tell them before you start and remove their access. Their next login reactivates the account.
- Insights you want to keep. Screenshot the numbers you report to clients before the break, so a gap in your records does not become a gap in your media kit.
- Customers and DMs. If people order or book through the account, post where they should go instead before you deactivate.
How long should an Instagram break be?
Instagram does not set a minimum or maximum in its deactivation article, so the length is your call. From running creator accounts at agency scale, the useful question is what you want to be different when you come back. A few days away from the app is often enough to reset habits. A longer break makes sense when you are changing direction, because it gives you time to plan a new content approach rather than drifting back into the old one. Either way, write down the date you intend to return and what the first week of posts will be, so the comeback is a decision and not an accident.
How to reactivate your Instagram account
Log in. That is the whole process: open the app or instagram.com and sign in with your username, email or phone number and password. If you have lost the password, use the reset link on the login screen. If you used two-factor authentication, have your authenticator app or backup codes ready. Your profile and content become visible again once you are back in.
Plan the timing if you expect to need another break soon. Because Instagram limits deactivation to once a week, logging in for a quick check during a break can leave you unable to hide the account again for several days.
Instagram deactivate account vs delete: which one you want
| Deactivate | Delete | |
|---|---|---|
| What others see | Nothing: profile, photos, comments and likes hidden | Nothing from the moment you confirm |
| How to undo | Log back in at any time | Log in within 30 days |
| End date | None stated; lasts until you log in | Permanent after 30 days |
| Followers, posts, username | Kept and restored on login | Removed for good after 30 days |
| How often | Once a week | Once per account |
| Needs your password | Yes | Yes |
Deletion is permanent after 30 days, and it releases your username for anyone to take. Deactivation keeps everything and has no deadline in Instagram's article. If you are unsure, deactivate first: you can always delete later, but you cannot undo a completed deletion.
- You want a break of any length
- You may return to the same audience
- The username or brand matters
- You are deciding in the heat of the moment
- You will never want the content again
- You have downloaded your data
- The username does not matter to you
- No other apps log in through the account
When you do not need to deactivate at all
Instagram itself suggests two lighter options in the deactivation article: make your posts private, or block specific people. Both keep the account live for the people you choose. Other ways to step back without hiding the account:
- Log out and delete the app for a while. Nothing changes for your followers, and you keep the option to post later.
- Mute notifications and turn off activity status. You stay reachable without being pulled back in.
- Schedule a few posts and step away. Creators who rely on the account for income can keep it ticking over while they rest.
- Change what you post, not whether you post. If being on camera is what wears you out, our guide to growing without showing your face covers formats that ask less of you.
Many creators who come back from a break come back to a different plan. If you want a structured restart with a clearer niche and a Reels system, Instagram Ignited walks through it from positioning to the first 30 days of content.
Troubleshooting
- No Deactivation or deletion option. Update the app or use instagram.com in a browser. Check whether your menu says Meta Account settings instead of Accounts Center.
- Deactivation blocked after a recent break. You deactivated recently. Wait for the week to pass, or make the account private in the meantime.
- The account reactivated by itself. Something logged in. Log out everywhere, revoke third-party apps, change your password and deactivate again when the limit allows.
- Cannot log in to deactivate. Recover the account first from the login screen. If Instagram suspended it, see account suspended because of Facebook and the help hub.
Deactivating Instagram temporarily: FAQ
How do I deactivate Instagram temporarily?
Open your profile, tap the menu, then Accounts Center. Depending on your version, tap Manage account and then Manage next to the profile, or tap Personal details and then Account ownership and control. Tap Deactivation or deletion, choose the account, tap Deactivate account, then Continue and confirm. Your profile, photos, comments and likes are hidden until you log back in. Checked October 2026.
How long can I keep my Instagram account deactivated?
Instagram's Help Center describes temporary deactivation as lasting until you reactivate by logging back in, and it does not set an end date in the article we checked in October 2026. That is the key difference from deletion, which becomes permanent 30 days after the request. If you want a long break and might return, deactivation is the safer choice.
How do I reactivate a deactivated Instagram account?
Log back in with your username, email or phone number and password, in the app or on instagram.com. Instagram says your profile, photos, comments and likes stay hidden until you reactivate by logging in. If you have forgotten the password, use the reset option on the login screen first. Remember that logging in by accident on an old device also reactivates the account.
How often can you deactivate Instagram?
Once a week. Instagram's Help Center says you can only deactivate your profile once a week, checked October 2026. If you deactivate, log back in the next day and then want another break, you may have to wait until the week has passed. Threads has the same once-a-week limit for deactivating a Threads profile.
Does deactivating Instagram delete my followers or posts?
No. Deactivation hides your profile, photos, comments and likes from other people, and they come back when you log in again. Your followers, posts and username stay with the account. Deleting is different: after 30 days the account, posts and followers are permanently removed and cannot be restored, so deactivate if there is any chance you will return.
Can I deactivate Instagram without the password?
No. Instagram says you need to be able to log in to temporarily deactivate your profile. If you cannot remember your password or username, recover the account first from the login screen. If someone else has taken over the account, secure it through Instagram's hacked-account flow before you try to deactivate, or they can simply log in and reactivate it.
Coming back after a break? Return with a plan, not a guess.
