Quick answer

If you can't follow people on Instagram, the cause is usually one of two: you already follow 7,500 accounts, which is Instagram's hard cap, or Instagram has temporarily blocked following because recent activity looked automated. If it fails on one profile only, the account is private or the person blocked you. Check the eight causes in order and fix the one you find.

You can't follow people on Instagram usually because you already follow 7,500 accounts, which is Instagram's cap for everyone, or because Instagram has temporarily blocked following after activity that looked automated. If it fails on only one profile, that account is private and your request is pending, or the person has blocked you.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on how many accounts you can follow, unauthorized activity and "Try again later", managing followers, Teen Accounts, blocking, Account Status, reporting a problem, confirming your age and changes to your follows. Instagram publishes no daily follow limit, so this page quotes none.

A follow problem is one of the milder account issues. For everything from action blocks to disabled accounts, start at our Instagram account help hub.

Instagram follow not working: the 8 causes in check order

The order is deliberate: the quickest checks come first, and each one rules out a group. The single most useful question is whether the follow fails on one profile or on every profile.

Diagnose it in five minutes
  1. 1
    Read your Following number

Open your profile. At 7,500, you have found the cause.

  2. 2
    Try a second, public profile

If that works, the problem belongs to the first account: private, or it blocked you.

  3. 3
    Note any message

"Try again later" or "We restrict certain activity" means a block on following.

  4. 4
    Open Account Status

A listed feature means a limit with a review route.

  5. 5
Check connected apps and login activity

A growth app or unknown device keeps a block coming back.

  6. 6
Update the app and restart the phone

If it still fails with no message, report it as a bug.

1. You already follow 7,500 accounts

Instagram's Help Center says that to help reduce spam, it does not allow anyone to follow more than 7,500 people. It applies to every account, whatever its size, and trying to follow more brings up an error. The cap never resets, so the only fix is to unfollow accounts you no longer want, by hand and in small sessions. For the difference between this cap and the daily rate limit, see Instagram follow limits.

2. Instagram can't follow anyone: a block on following

Below 7,500, a follow that fails on every profile is almost always a temporary block. Instagram says you may see "Try again later" when it detects inauthentic activity on your account, and points to a compromised password and third-party apps that hold your login. Following in fast bursts, by hand or with a tool, reads the same way. The other actions on the account usually keep working, which is why it feels like a bug.

Clear a block on following
  • Stop tapping Follow; every retry extends the pattern
  • Pause or disconnect any growth, follow or unfollow app
  • Remove third-party apps you do not recognize
  • Remove logins you do not recognize in login activity
  • Change your password and turn on two-factor authentication
  • Keep posting and replying by hand as normal
  • When following works again, follow a few accounts at a time, hours apart

Instagram publishes no duration for these blocks. The Instagram action blocked fix covers the three types and how each ends, and if your message read "We restrict certain activity to protect our community", the guide to that exact message sorts its triggers.

3. The account is private, so your follow is a request

If the button says Requested, nothing is broken: the owner has to accept you. Instagram's Teen Accounts put people under 16, and under 18 in some countries, into private accounts by default, and teens have to accept new followers. Instagram also holds requests it flags as likely spam in a separate folder, where they are declined automatically if the owner does not approve them within 30 days. A blank, brand-new profile following in bulk is the kind of account that gets its requests held, so finish your profile before you follow.

Requested, or blocked?
Requested
  • You can see the profile and its bio
  • The button shows Requested after you tap it
  • You can cancel by tapping it again
  • It waits on the owner, not on Instagram
Blocked by the person
  • The profile does not come up in search
  • Their posts and story do not appear for you
  • Instagram does not notify you
  • Other profiles follow normally

4. The person blocked you

Instagram says that when someone blocks you, you cannot find their profile, posts or story, and that people are not notified when they are blocked. If a profile you used to see has vanished while every other follow works, that is the likely reason, and there is nothing to fix on your side. Our guide on how to tell if someone blocked you rules out a deleted or deactivated account.

5. A feature limit or a flagged account

Open Account Status from your profile menu, under Help. If something is listed under features you can't use, the limit came from a content decision, and you can request a review of the removed content there. Instagram's data scraping page adds a related case: an account can be restricted when an app collects information through it, including apps that promise likes or followers. The fix is the same as for a block: revoke the app and secure the login. Instagram account restricted, blocked or disabled covers every state in more depth.

6. An app bug or outage

Suspect the app when the follow fails with no message at all, on every profile, and started after an update or for many people at once. Update Instagram, restart your phone and check your connection. If it continues, Instagram suggests reinstalling, which keeps your photos and profile. Then report it: your profile, the menu, Help under More info and support, then Report a Problem. Mention your phone model and what you were doing.

7. An age check you have not finished

Instagram says it may ask you to confirm your age in some regions to keep using the account, or before you use certain features. You can do it with your birthday, a photo ID or a video selfie, which Instagram's partner Yoti handles, and the age is not shown on your profile. If a confirmation prompt is waiting, finish it before you troubleshoot anything else.

8. Follows that disappear after you make them

If the follow goes through and later vanishes, or your Following count drops on its own, Instagram may have removed it. Its Help Center says apps that generate automated engagement break the Community Guidelines and that activity from such accounts is removed when they are found. If you gave your login to one of those apps, the follows it made can be removed too, and Instagram warns that continued use can get parts of the account restricted. Disconnect the app and change the password.

The same applies in reverse when your unfollow button is not working: unfollowing in bulk can be stopped like following, and Instagram publishes no unfollow limit. Unfollow by hand in small sessions. If an app is what you used to track or tidy your list, our review of the best Instagram unfollow apps explains which kinds hold your login and which only read an export file.

Once you can follow again

Follow by hand, a few accounts at a time, and only accounts you would actually engage with. Following is a weak growth lever anyway: reach comes from content that gets recommended, which is what Instagram Ignited teaches through hooks, trial reels and Instagram SEO, with a lesson on Explore and recommendations that covers why follow-unfollow puts an account at risk.

Why can't I follow people on Instagram: FAQ

Why can't I follow people on Instagram?

Check eight causes in order: you already follow 7,500 accounts, a temporary action block on following, a private account where your request is still pending, a person who blocked you, a feature limit listed in Account Status, an app bug, an age check, or follows that Instagram removed as inauthentic. Whether it fails on one profile or on every profile tells you which group to look in first.

Why does my Instagram follow button keep going back to Follow?

When you tap Follow and it flips back, the follow did not go through. The usual cause is a temporary block on following because recent activity looked automated, often with a "Try again later" message. Stop following for now, remove any growth or unfollow app, change your password and wait. If it happens with no message and after an app update, report the bug.

Why can't I follow anyone on Instagram but I can like posts?

Instagram can block one action while leaving others working. A block on following does not stop liking, posting or messaging, which is why the account otherwise seems fine. Check your Following count first: at 7,500, the cap is the reason and only unfollowing helps. Below it, treat it as an action block on following and stop testing the button.

Why does Instagram say Requested instead of Following?

The account is private, so your follow is a request that the owner has to accept. Teen Accounts under 16, and under 18 in some countries, are private by default and must approve new followers. Instagram also holds requests it flags as likely spam in a separate folder, and those are declined automatically if not approved within 30 days.

Why is my Instagram unfollow button not working?

Unfollowing can be stopped the same way following can when it happens in bulk, and Instagram publishes no unfollow limit. If unfollows fail or come back, stop for a while, disconnect any unfollow app that holds your login and update Instagram. Then unfollow by hand in small sessions. If nothing has changed on your side, use Report a Problem in the app.

How long until I can follow people on Instagram again?

It depends on the cause. The 7,500 cap never expires; you have to unfollow accounts. A temporary block on following has no published duration and lifts after the activity behind it stops, unless your notice names a date. A pending request waits for the other person. A feature limit lasts for the period shown in Account Status.
