Instagram monetization requirements are the rules an account must meet before Instagram's own earning tools switch on. Every tool needs a professional account, an owner aged 18 or older, an eligible country and clean policy standing. Follower minimums differ: 500 for Gifts, 1,000 for Creator Marketplace, 10,000 for Subscriptions and badges, while bonuses are invite-only with view minimums instead.
Instagram monetization requirements are the rules an account must meet before Instagram's own earning tools switch on: a professional account, an owner aged 18 or older, an eligible country, clean policy standing and a follower minimum that differs by feature. Checked October 2026, Gifts need 500 followers, Creator Marketplace 1,000, Subscriptions and badges 10,000, and bonuses are invite-only with view minimums in place of a follower count.
Every number on this page was checked in October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center: the list of monetization tools, Gifts, Subscriptions, badges, bonus program rules, Creator Marketplace, the Partner Monetization Policies, the Content Monetization Policies and payouts.
These rules cover only the money Instagram pays or processes itself. Services, your own products, UGC work and most brand deals have no Instagram threshold at all; our guide to every way to monetize Instagram ranks those against the tools below.
Instagram monetization requirements at a glance
Instagram lists five monetization tools with their own eligibility pages. The follower minimum is the part people ask about, but country and access rule out accounts that follower count never would. For what each count opens beyond these tools, brand deals and direct sales included, see how many followers you need to make money on Instagram.
| Feature | Followers | Where | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gifts on reels | 500 | 49 listed countries | Open to eligible accounts |
| Meta Creator Marketplace | 1,000 | Wherever Meta advertising operates, with six exclusions | Open; public account required |
| Subscriptions | 10,000 | The same 49 countries as Gifts | Open to eligible accounts |
| Badges on Live | 10,000 | Not listed on the badges page | Open to eligible accounts |
| Bonuses | None; view minimums instead | Japan, South Korea, United States | Invite-only test |
Bonuses are left out: they set view minimums, not a follower count. Source: Instagram Help Center eligibility pages, checked October 2026
Instagram monetization eligibility: the rules every feature shares
Before any follower count matters, the account has to pass the same baseline. Instagram says that to monetize and keep earning, your account and content must comply with its Community Standards, Partner Monetization Policies and Content Monetization Policies.
- Professional account: creator or business, not personal
- The birthday on the account makes you 18 or older
- You live in a country where that feature is offered
- Authentic audience: no bought followers, views or engagement
- An established presence, which Instagram says includes a sufficient follower base
- Original content in formats Instagram allows to earn
- No open violations in Monetization status
- A payout account, added before earnings pass the caps
The format rule is the one that surprises people. The Content Monetization Policies bar static videos, slideshows of images, looping videos, text montages and engagement bait from earning, along with unoriginal content. A post can be allowed on Instagram and still be ineligible to make money.
The requirements, feature by feature
Each table lists only what is extra to the baseline above.
Gifts on reels
| Requirement | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| Followers | At least 500 |
| Location | Live in one of 49 listed countries |
| Setup | Agree to the Gifts Creators Terms and set up a payout account |
| Excluded | Collaborative posts; accounts that primarily post content focused on children |
| What it pays | $0.01 for every Star received |
Gifts are the first tool most accounts unlock. If the option is missing at 500 followers, Instagram gifts not available runs the checks in order.
Subscriptions
| Requirement | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| Followers | At least 10,000 on a professional account |
| Location | Live in one of the same 49 countries |
| Setup | Agree to the Subscriptions Terms of Use; the option then appears in the professional dashboard |
| Excluded | Accounts that primarily post content focused on children |
Setup, pricing and the launch mistake to avoid are in Instagram subscription eligibility.
Badges on Live
| Requirement | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| Followers | At least 10,000 |
| Location | No country list on the badges page; the tool appears where it is offered |
| Setup | Payout account; earnings tracked in the Badges tab |
| Limits | Payments from one supporter in one Live are capped at $250 |
| Fees | Instagram's share is currently 0%; Apple and Google collect 30% |
Bonuses
| Requirement | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| Access | Invite-only; not every eligible creator is selected |
| Location | Located and with tax status in Japan, South Korea or the United States |
| Reels bonus | At least 5 million views across the previous 3 calendar months; not an aggregator account |
| Photo and carousel bonus | A monthly view minimum for 3 months in a row: 5 million in the US, 1 million in South Korea, 500,000 in Japan |
| Not paid | Branded content, boosted content, collaborative reels and posts |
The bonus rules page also lists photo and carousel view minimums for the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa and four Nordic countries, while stating that bonuses are invite-only in Japan, South Korea and the United States. Read that as a sign of where tests may go, not as open eligibility. The program's history and what past payouts looked like are in our Instagram Reels bonus program guide, and Instagram reels bonus not available covers what to do when no invite shows.
How to qualify for Instagram monetization, in order
Qualifying is a sequence, and the cheap checks come first. Policy standing sits ahead of follower count because a violation blocks every tool at once.
- 01Professional account
Switch in Settings; it is free
- 02Policy standing
Settings, Creator or Business, Monetization status
- 03Age and country
Fixed facts; no setting changes them
- 04Feature minimum
500, 1,000 or 10,000 followers
- 05Accept the terms
The tool appears in the professional dashboard
- 06Payout account
Needed to collect what you earn
Monetization status is only in the mobile app. It lists current policy violations, and Request a review appeals them all at once. On payouts, Instagram says you can accrue up to $500 per tool and $1,500 across three tools without a payout account, and that you forfeit the earnings if you have not added one within six months.
One newer route sits outside Instagram's list for now. Retail Dive reported in April 2026 that Meta is testing product tags with affiliate links in Reels for creators aged 18 or older with a public account, more than 1,000 followers and good standing under the Partner Monetization Policies, in five markets, and that not every qualifying creator has it yet.
Follower count is the only requirement here you can work on every day. The system for doing that, from positioning to the weekly review, is what Instagram Ignited teaches.
Often confused with: recommendation eligibility
Monetization eligibility decides whether you can earn. Recommendation eligibility decides whether strangers are shown your posts. They are separate checks on separate screens, and an account can pass one and fail the other.
- Decides whether Instagram tools can pay you
- Rules: Partner and Content Monetization Policies
- Checked in Settings under Monetization status
- Has follower minimums per feature
- Decides whether non-followers are shown your posts
- Rules: Recommendations Guidelines
- Checked in Account Status
- Has no follower minimum

Instagram monetization requirements: FAQ
What are the Instagram monetization requirements in 2026?
Every Instagram earning tool needs a professional account, an owner aged 18 or older, residence in a country where the tool is offered, and compliance with the Community Standards, Partner Monetization Policies and Content Monetization Policies. On top of that each feature sets its own minimum: 500 followers for Gifts, 1,000 for Creator Marketplace, 10,000 for Subscriptions and badges. Bonuses are invite-only. Checked October 2026.
How many followers do you need to monetize Instagram?
It depends on the feature. Instagram's Help Center lists at least 500 followers for Gifts on reels, 1,000 for Meta Creator Marketplace and 10,000 for both Subscriptions and badges on Live. Bonuses have no follower minimum but require millions of views and an invitation. Selling your own products or services through Instagram has no follower rule at all. Checked October 2026.
Do I need a business account to monetize Instagram?
You need a professional account, which means either a creator or a business account. Personal accounts cannot use Gifts, Subscriptions, badges, bonuses or Creator Marketplace. Switching is free and reversible in Settings, and it also unlocks the professional dashboard, where Instagram shows the tools your account can set up and where payouts are managed.
Which countries are eligible for Instagram monetization?
Eligibility is set per feature, by where you live. Gifts and Subscriptions share a list of 49 countries on Instagram's Help Center, including the United States, United Kingdom, India, Brazil and Australia. Bonuses are being tested with select creators in Japan, South Korea and the United States. Creator Marketplace is available wherever Meta advertising operates, with six exclusions. Checked October 2026.
Why am I not eligible for Instagram monetization?
Check four things in order: the account is professional, the birthday on it makes you 18 or older, you live in a supported country for that feature, and your follower count meets its minimum. If all four pass, open Settings, then Creator or Business, then Monetization status. A policy violation listed there blocks earning until it is resolved or successfully appealed.
Does Instagram pay you once you meet the requirements?
Meeting the requirements only switches the tools on. Gifts pay when viewers send Stars, Subscriptions when followers subscribe, and badges when Live viewers buy them. Instagram does not pay a general rate per view; its bonuses, which do pay on views, are invite-only tests. You also need a payout account: without one, earnings are capped and are forfeited after six months.
Short of a threshold? Followers are the part you control.
Instagram Ignited, included in All Access, covers positioning, Reels and the weekly review loop behind follower growth, with the other three programs, live coaching and the private community in one subscription.
